Within a year the HD failed

The hard drive failed before a year was up luckily the unit was under warranty. While speaking to the tech he recommended I purchase the extended warranty for $159. When I said no he offered it to me at $149. I said no again and he said he could go as low as $129 and that was it. I accepted. I wouldn't purchase another computer without a built in optical disc drive. The USB ports are loose and don't make a solid connection, giving me a connection error message. The NUM LOCK doesn't have an indicator light and there is no way of determining if it is on or off unless you start to type on it (and no way of disabling the button). If off, depending on the number you hit your cursor moves to a different location (VERY ANNOYING). The keyboard characters are difficult to read, with the backlight on they are next to impossible if an overhead light is on too. Original power cable that came with the unit produced an error message that the cable was incompatible with the unit (HP replaced the power unit free of charge).

    Fast Speed

The speed is great, fan is loud, not as light in weight as it should be for the cost and the laptop gets hot while is use. I didn't have this problem with my old $400 laptop and it's lighter. I'm thinking about returning it.

    Good Laptop for College Students

This laptop is great for college students. The battery life is good and the battery saver option allows the laptop battery to last for a really long amount of time, sometimes up to a full day depending on what you're doing. The Laptop's harddrive did fail during the first year or so, but geek squad was able to take care of it and return my laptop within an understandable amount of time. Haven't had many problems with the laptop so far (had it for nearly 3 years).

    Do not buy

Bought this laptop at recommendation of a best buy salesperson for college. Needed a dependable windows computer that would last me about four years. Fan started going crazy and system slowed WAY down about 6 weeks after my warranty expired. Only solution is a new motherboard which costs $500. Not really in the budget for a struggling college student. Buying a $1000 computer and having such big expensive issues as this is not right. Will not be buying an hp in future.

    Horrible Computer

This computer worked fine for maybe 6 months, but after that I have had all kinds of issues! For some reason my sound stopped working, which doesn't work when you're a student and need to be watching videos and lectures. If my sound wouldn't work I had to restart my computer and start playing something with sound as soon as it turned back on or else the sound wouldn't work. I contacted HP and they remotely tried to fix it but didn't and said I could ship my computer in to be fixed but that would take weeks and I am an online student. Thankfully I have a coworker that used to work for geeksquad and she was able to fix it. Shortly after this happened and my warranty expired, every other time that I turned my computer on it would start tweeking out. Windows would start popping up for no reason, the start menu would pop up and then go away, I had no control over it and I would have to put my computer to sleep and turn it back on again in order for it to work properly. I have had this computer for the better part of three years and I am still having this issue. And now, every other time I turn this computer on the mouse won't work. I either have to change to tablet mode, which doesn't work for me when I am trying to get school work done, or I have to put my computer to sleep and turn it back on. I will never get an HP again, nor will I be trusting best buy "experts" to help me make a decision. Waste of money and waste of time.
