Total cliff hanger

When into buying knowing it was part of a bigger story, but man it was a total cliff hanger. You don’t get much of the answer that you wanted from the first movie, but hey if you are into anime you already know it takes a million episodes to get the answers lol

"Wat."
Is the operative word the first time you watch 3.33. As a preface, I'm going to TLDR this review to death. I will strive not to SPOIL things, but be advised that it's impossible to talk about the franchise and not spoil things from the 1995 OVA series.
First off, Anno told us from the begging that the Rebuild was going to change midway through it's four film release, and it does, wildly! Second of all, the first two films of the rebuild stick pretty close to the original's storyline, which makes 3.33 a new trope for directorial tangents. Nothing in 3.33, aside from the inclusion of most cast members and about three or four plot devices remains the same from either the original broadcast or the 2 movies. So if you loved End of Evangelion or the original show, you WILL be heartbroken with 3.33.
But don't lose hope! This iteration of the rebuild is glorious. The action is over the top intricate detail after detail. 2/3's of the movie are devoted to fight scenes. 2 freaking 3rds! The plot follows a similar pattern to what's being attempted all along; Gendo is working under the guise of SEELE to implement the Human Instrumentality Project, Misato questions the aim of Nerv since surviving previous calamities, Shinji seeks to find himself in a world of despair, betrayal, manipulation and abandonment. Those are as Eva as you can get and shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. It's the storyline of 3.33 that's going to drift dramatically from canon. Pull-off the nostalgia goggles, realize that the original run was hampered by Anno's depression and budgetary constraints, watch the film and wait patiently another four years for 4.44's conclusion to land before dismissing this entry in the rebuild.
Picture is nearly flawless. With a few artifacts during one or two fight scenes involving polarizing colors, and a few micro-banding issues during some dim lit sequences, the visual portion of 3.33 is mesmerizing. Blu-ray is the only way to watch this movie.
Audio is a problem in this entry for several reasons. Normally my speakers are on 10-12 to hear dialogue. I had to turn the volume up to 23 to hear things clearly! There's really quite moments during playback, especially concerning Shinji mulling his dilemmas over. Then there's explosive bombastic moments during outbursts and action. The result is a juggling of volume controls, something that the other two movies have an issue with as well. I'm hoping one day that anime will be coded with decent audio options for 2.0 stereo AND 5.1 surround, but not in this entry.
The special features in this outing are poor. There's 14 different trailers for the movie, there's one decent featurette showing the production process of sketches, to rushes, to finalizations of the film. Then there's previews for other Funimation works. This is pretty standard, but they're missing the voice actor narrations that we had in 2.22! It would also be nice to see interviews with Anno, as he's the visionary mastermind behind Neon Genesis Evangelion. They did include something very nice with this entry, a small full color booklet showcasing the official artwork of the characters, evangelions, angels, weaponry, and other elements of the movie. Also, the cover jacket is a beautiful matte finish seafoam green cover that fits the disc cover and booklet quite nicely.
Finally, and this is why I give this movie a 3 stars, the controversy surrounding 3.33. The movie premiered in Japan in November of 2012. It was released in North America on February 2nd, 2016. Read that again!!! This is beyond unacceptable. It was milked in theatres at the end of 2013 of various anime conventions, so Funimation decided to halt it's retail release. Then it was delayed a second time to dub the entry, slated for a 2014 release, which mysteriously stopped over night. A third delay occurred when Funimation posted a message on their website stating that Studio Khara wanted to redub the entry so that it followed more closely to the original Japanese script. In the later part of 2015 we were told that the movie would release at the beginning of 2016, a full three and a half years from the original's release AND after the holidays. I've watched this movie backwards and forwards three times straight, along with scanning every possible inch of the special features and nowhere is there an formal apology by Funimation or any of the production studios for the constant delay of this movie! A similar event happened with End of Evangelion back in the early 2000's but this is 2016! Entire series get released within three years! Inexcusable. The movie is also 30 minutes shorter than the previous rebuilds and winds up giving us more questions than answers with the new storyline twists.
So you have a movie that differs greatly from the canon of the series, has poor audio with great video, and took close to 4 years to release stateside for you could read this review. 3 out of 5 is generous, and if it wasn't Evangelion it would be a 1. I would recommend this movie to anyone who wants to complete their Evangelion Rebuild collection, or anyone who wants to hang on for the wild ride that the rebuild of the series has set up. I would avoid it like Plutonium for anyone who is a stringent lover of the originals, or anyone who hasn't fallen in love with the newer styles of anime fanservice delivery, hates production postponements, or wants more bang for their buck.

These Evangelion movies take an eternity to reach these shores, but fans and newcomers alike will find them worth it! Like the original television release, the English dub is a mixed bag. I highly suggest Japanese language with English subtitles to get the real flavor for the characters. Characters who really irritate are for more endearing in the original Japanese. As far as the remake goes this is the HUGE break from the original narrative; uncharted territory, new characters , and an entirely new story trajectory. With one more film to come your left hanging, but the entire rebuild series is so masterful you'll endure the wait. Theres some nice extras showcasing design progression, a really nice companion book packed in, great sound and this series looks AMAZING on Bluray. The vibrancy of colors alone makes one want all their anime on Bluray, assuming the transfer is on par.
Evangelion is a masterpiece not to be missed. Be aware though it gets fairly high concept as it progresses, mindless robot action it isn't, but any fan of the art form must see it. Its one of the best bar none.

This is the third Evangelion movie and is preceded by Evangelion 1.11 and 2.22. These three movies are in a alternate world to the other movies/TV show. Do not watch this movie without seeing the first two movies preceding this. These movies are rated as PG-13 but I would recommend considering this movie to have a R rating due to the considerable violence this series contains.
To start out with this movie is confusing. I am hoping that the fourth and final movie will clarify things. When I say confusing I had to bring up a Wikipedia article to understand it and I still don’t think it is a great movie. This might be better if you had a psychology major and someone familiar with obscure biblical text to discuss it with or an anime fan club. I bought this movie because I want to support the creators.

...the wait if FINALLY OVER. The big question: Was it worth it?
That's very difficult to say. If you're an hardcore fan/otaku of all things EVA, definitely. If you're like me and you're a fan of just the 2 previous movies, then I'd say yes.
Keeping this Spoiler-Free, I'll say this. It's the shortest (in run time) of the 3 EVA movies at 96 minutes. The animation quality if on par with the previous 2 movies as well.
The story continues to expand on the new, revisionist version of the original story, which is the biggest selling point.
What I truly hated about the original TV series was the meandering, angst-filled storyline & characterizations. This new version, while still angst-y, doesn't waste as much time dwelling (wallowing) in that. Instead, it builds on the action and conspiracy angle of the original story. Think "Pacific Rim," but remember that is was originally produced years before that film.

(My star rating is a mix of my ratings for the packaging and the movie itself. Rating for packaging/release quality alone: 5/5. Rating for movie itself: 2/5.)
Before I get into my thoughts on the actual movie, let me describe the quality of the Blu Ray itself for anyone who has already seen it. Overall, the packaging is great. It comes with a book full of concept art that's cool to look at. As for the blu-ray itself, it has stellar picture and sound quality, it definitely preforms in that area. The menu is also very cool. I haven't checked out the special features yet, but overall this was a good release by Funimation (even if it did take forever for them to finally push it out).
As far as my thoughts on the movie itself: I hated it. I'm a big fan of the original Evangelion series and I really liked the first two rebuild movies, so I was looking forward to the third one where they'll totally go off the rails with an original story that is totally different from the series. And, man, was I disappointed. If you're looking for closure to the shocking events of the second film, you won't find them here. It plops you into a story that takes place years after the last movie, and on top of not explaining events from the last movie, it doesn't even explain the events in this one! To make matters worse, all of the development that the characters went through in the last movie is totally revoked. They all basically become two-dimensional side characters that don't do much of anything. The plot of this movie was so confusing - and not in the good, stimulating way that the original series was confusing. No, this confusion is just due to bad writing. This is one of the biggest disappointments of a movie I've ever watched. It's confusing, contrived, dull, and ultimately lifeless. Unless you just want to own all the movies, I do not recommend buying it.

An Interesting Departure from Evangelion

Evangelion 3.33, the third in the series, is the first real departure from the original Evangelion series.
A short summary of this movie Shinji wakes up in a foreign world many years after the events of the 2nd movie, and has to deal with the world that results after his desperation to save Rei.
It's amazing how much this movie departs from the original story, but it was nice to see some original content. The first two, while nice and presented shine in a less depressing light as well as changing the character dynamic, was really the same story.
A big downside to this one is it really feels like the story isn't really flushed out compared to the previous two, nor is it near as fast paced and in many places feels boring. This is definately not the one to start out on. It's still a really good film for any evangelion fan in my opinion.

The Evangelion storyline takes a MAJOR divergence from what has been released in the past. Very intrigued to see which direction it goes in, I hope I do not have to wait 8 years for the 4th movie to be released. Rated 4 stars because the sound is EXTREMELY tinny. The movie HAS to be watched with subtitles and rewound at points because conversation comes in as a whisper...at best :-( This gives the movie more of a Michael Bay movie feel (which is unfortunate because Evangeliion has better talent than Michael Bay EVER will at developing a story with out an over emphasis on the explosions) because it gives the impression that the action and explosions are more important than the story progression.

This film came out in 2012, the English dub was released to US audiences in 2016. Four years for an English dub, when it took three years to make it, says a lot about the production company's priorities. When the final film, 4.44 comes out we won't get it till the early 2020's.
But, it was worth it. I love the new direction and attempt to fill in the time gaps between the second and third film. The production value is immense, lots of color and movement. Though I do wish Shinji would grow a back bone and become the hero, everyone wants him to be. Here's hoping for the dream to come true in 4.44, just have to wait, again.

Note, the Evangelion anime series is definitely not a children's cartoon. This a dark science fiction noir loosely featuring giant robots and post-apocalyptic scenes, and some really disturbing stuff. This is the third installment of the Rebuild of Evangelion, which is a reboot\retelling of the anime series from the 90's. Although it would help to be familiar with the series beforehand, it is not absolutely necessary, as the Rebuild essentially retells the story from the beginning. You'll definitely want to view the first two, 1.11 and 2.22, before viewing this third part.

Based on the original anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion, it is 3 out of 4 that has been released.Evangelion is about a future apocalyptic set in Tokyo fifteen years after a worldwide cataclysm. The story centers on Shinji, a teenage boy who is recruited by the shadowy organization NERV to pilot a giant bio-machine mecha called an Evangelion in combat against monstrous beings known as Angels. The series explores the experiences and emotions of Evangelion pilots and members of NERV as they attempt to prevent another catastrophe.

I'm an old school anime fan. I loved the original Evangelion series back in the 90s.
These remake movies that have been coming out are fantastic!
With that said, this is probably my least favorite of the movie remakes so far. It drags on for a lot of the first half of the film. The main character has gone from being a hero to being reviled by virtually everyone.
Once you get to the second half, it's much better! Overall I still give it 4 stars, since it is still "must see" for Evangelion and anime fans!

This third movie in the Evangelion rebuild series is the most unexpected in its plot, being completely different than the original series. While there are some delightful moments, it's overall very bleak. Now that the fourth installment is released in America, make sure you watch that as soon as possible after seeing this film. You'll feel better about life.

While the Evangelion series and films were known for their share of both cutting edge and controversy, the recent Rebuild series kicks it up a notch and does not disappoint. The third installment breaks new ground both cinematically and in its storytelling of Hideaki Anno's post-Apocalyptic new world. The blu-ray itself is beautiful, the subs and dubs are both top quality, and the art design companion booklet is exemplary in its detail and charm. This purchase will have you pining for the next installment. Enjoy it.

From the ending of the second installment, we start to see how this "rebuild" takes on a whole new direction. This one takes it even further and leaves so many unanswered questions. Still a must watch for those following this new story line. Shinji has returned but is not allowed to pilot because of his role in the last episode. Asuka survived and is piloting again alongside with Mari. Nerv is only a shadow of its former self. I hope we don't have to wait too long for the fourth installment.

I've been an Evangelion fan since it came out, and even though the movies have changed the story a bit it is enough to keep it fresh for new and old fans. The animations, as with the previous 2 is superb, and even if this episode story line gets a bit confusing is still awesome to watch. With one more movie to go, I hope the end is not as depressing as the series as the creator said in past interviews. I recommend it to any science fiction / anime otaku / mecha loving person out there.

The long, long awaited third part of the Evangelion saga looks more like a bridge to the final stage. I'm a big fan, but aside of the initial sequence (A superb one!), the rest of the movie show only hints of developments that (hopefully) should be resolved in the final release.
Anyway, you must see it. Animation is excellent. Music also. Less than five minutes of Asuka, but is still Asuka!
Now, how many years for the fourth and final release?
