Great game
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was hesitant to get this game because of squares plan to break the remake up over several games and that just felt like a money grab. Honestly I still think it is but it is still a great game. I'm playing on a PS4 pro and a 4k TV and the Visuals are just stunning. Every cutscene my eyes are just glued to the TV trying to soak in all the details. The combat did take some getting used to as it's more FF 15 than the original but it's still enjoyable. Your team general does act smart but you may need to control them if you want a certain enemy targeted. From what I see there isn't a command to tell them to Target an enemy unless your asking them to use a special ability. Because of this I often have to control Barrett to take out long range enemies the others can't reach. It's a minor annoyance but it may be intentional to force players to play the other characters. The story has obviously been tweeked considering this section of the game was minor in the original. So far I haven't had any real issue with this. After the first mission I thought I knew how the flow of the game would go but I was pleasantly surprised to see the second mission was structured differently. Every time I thought I was done another boss fight was around the corner. On top of that the characters develop pretty nicely little by little you learn more about them and their reasons for being how they are. In alot of games it can be annoying to sit through alot of talking but there is a good balance between cutscenes and the characters just telling you things while you traverse the land so the game doesn't feel sluggish. There are side missions added obviously to justify them making a midgard only game. It's disappointing these aren't more meaningful. The characters giving the job have full voice acting so it stands to reason they could have just been significant background characters. Or at least reveal little tidbits about the characters in your party. Instead they're just generic kill all these monsters in an area or fetch quests. They aren't required but I'd recommend doing then for the experience and money. Overral it's a great game. Cloud is really cool and has a lot of funny lines when interacting with more energetic company. Everyone is pretty likeable. Barrett can be a bit annoying with him constantly spouting hate for shinra but it's kinda his thing. It's definitely worth the buy especially now with everyone stuck at home.

Compared to FF7 original PSX
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I'm a huge fan of the original FF7 on PSX. I beat the game back in 1997 when it first came out. This is NOT the same as the original PSX game - it is a REMAKE, so there are many changes to the original storyline. I was so excited for this. The graphics are incredible. The modern fighting is definitely more exciting. However, this game is REALLY frustrating. There's just too many running around back and forth in the same town, it gets tedious and boring during those moments. Enough with the mazes. It gets annoying. The story and map layout was just much better in the original. There's also way too many boss fights one after another and it's ridiculously hard. This game is definitely not for the casual gamer. My girlfriend can't beat a single boss. Even the first boss was a challenge for me. And the boss fights are REALLY long. It can get really exhausting. When you have to fight Reno later on the game, it's even more ridiculous. I feel the coding and boss fights are similar to the God of War game, except the graphics and fighting menu is different.

A wonderful re-imagining of a JRPG classic
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.FF7 remake's visuals are incredible, it is awesome to see these beloved characters again in such a grand way. Cloud, Barret, Tifa, and Aerith all look fantastic. There's a lot of extra character and charm added to the remake because this game takes place only in Midgar spanning 45 hours compared to the original's 6-7 hour Midgar section. There are some unnecessary extras to pad out the game but I think it was a ton of fun regardless. The new plot elements with the ghosts are strange and I don't really like their inclusion. There are some changed story elements near the end that worry me for the direction that this remake will be taking things, but I am still cautiously excited to see where it goes. The combat is incredibly addicting. FF7R manages to make a masterful hybrid between action-based and turn-based combat with the command menu mechanic. It feels very rewarding to learn the combat as you gradually get better at it and eventually master the game's ATB and party member switching systems. The re-imagined bosses are insanely epic. The new music arrangements for FF7's iconic tunes are mind blowing. The gripping Materia system is back alongside summons. A new feature in the remake is weapon upgrading which makes each weapon viable for the whole game depending on the abilities you choose. Highly recommend this game to FF7 veterans and newcomers alike!

Just Amazing
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I'm currently 14 hours into the game and so far, I've been blown away. I played the original on PS1 but it's not my favorite game of all time or anything. Nonetheless, the incredible attention to detail and the beauty of this game's world, environments and music has brought tears to my eyes more than once. This game was obviously made with the utmost love and reverence for the original classic. Combat is exciting in real-time, though it feels a little like bosses don't always play fair. It's easy to run out of healing items and money in the early-game. The story so far is excellent, and all the main characters from the original are well-written, acted, and pleasing to the eye. I've read there are some changes to the original story but that doesn't bother me. This whole project has such an air of confidence that I can't wait to see where the story goes. It's worth noting that this game covers maybe 25-30% of the original's story, and that more "episodes" are coming in the future. There's no guarantee they'll be coming soon, or even to the PS4 at all with PS5 on the horizon. Some certainty would be nice, but rest assured this game is a complete, impressive package in its own right.

Wonderful game.
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I am an avid fan of the original game. As a primer, this game is sort of a remake/retelling, sort of a revision (think Wolverine in the Days of Future Past movie). Some people may be disappointed that this (spoiler-alert) remake of FF7 is only for the very first portion of the original game. There are some daft side quests, most of which are optional. I was unsure that I would like the new combat system, but after a short while, it was easy enough to use and became somewhat intuitive. The weapon upgrading system can be somewhat daft, though. The music in the game is superb (there are about 5 different versions of the soundtrack available from Square Enix). Some of the characters seemed to be treated less favorably, like most of Tifa's personality from the original game being given to Jessie. Tifa has became a bit of a wet blanket in this game, which is such a shame.

The long wait was so worth it!
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've always been a huge Final Fantasy fan and the original version of this game released 20+ years ago is ranked higher among the rest for a reason. FFVII has some of the most engaging story beats and characters in the series history, and it's been glorious seeing it all faithfully recreated and reimagined for today's audience. Midgar is absolutely gorgeous on 4K displays. The remixed and new soundtracks are a treat for the ears. You can tell that just as much care and heart were put into this remake as the original. The combat is fast and fluid, with options to make it a turn based affair. Also, the game (this being the 1st part of a series) has been widely expanded upon with new characters and scenarios that are to be enjoyed and experienced. Enough talk from me though, if you're a fan of FFVII, this one's a no-brainer, and even if you aren't, FFVII Remake is still a game that must be experienced.

A classic remade right!
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I'm going to start this off by saying if you like RPGs or have ever liked Final Fantasy in your lifetime, go buy this game! That should be the first thing you do after reading this review. I will avoid spoilers as much as possible here I played the original at multiple times in my life and I have to say I'm extremely impressed with this remake. Personally, this is a 10/10 for me (with minor flaws in game mechanics, some cringy things here and there, plus motorball the inner game critic in me says 9.5/10, yes I love this game). Now the reasons why: Characters: You get to dive into each character that you truly interact with. In the original the other members of Avalanche had little impact in the beginning, but here, they truly do. I felt so immersed with these interactions that I cared more for them. You dive more into the main characters as well, with the way they interact with each other as well as getting to better know them without diving into information that will be learned later on. The one who truly showed me the best in-depth work was Dr. Hojo. He is so twisted and evil, in a scene where he interacts with Aerith your skin just crawls. I thought he was evil in the original, but here you see just what kind of person he is. Combat: This is the best combat experience I've come across in FF. Each character in your party has perks that come in handy depending on the situation. Once you get a feel for each character, you can set your leader to whom you prefer towards the end and really go all out. The lock-on is a little tricky as it's very easy to engage/disengage as well as to switch to another target and throw off your groove. For those who are new to the FF world, I recommend not going to hard mode right away so you get a feel for the system. Story: The story of this game has me as immersed as Fallout 3 did. I honestly didn't know what to expect from the Remake compared to the original, especially with the extremely long wait, but I was sold quickly. There are some new features to the story, which some purists would hate (and that is okay, the original is honestly a perfect game), but there's so much to take in. I played easy the first go through because I wanted to focus on the story first and I was very happy with that decision. Avalanche, the residents of Midgar, the social media, & Shinra are just amazing. Overall, when I first heard about the remake of FF7 announced I was nervous especially when they said that the game would be segmented. The biggest downfall of this game is the fact that we have to wait for the next installment of this franchise. I'm excited for this series to be brought back to life and I hope that Square Enix doesn't mess this up

Great Game but often need guide
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I only played FFX in the past, and this is the only game I currently own on PS4 Pro, but the graphics are incredible, the storyline is interesting, and the fight sequences make the game very enjoyable. One thing I wish I knew earlier was to use guides. I went about half the game without one and missed some vital materia for end game. Once I discovered this, I recommend using the guide purely for item/quest purposes and defeating bosses and trash mobs on your own. I thought I'd be done after completing the game on normal mode, but the storyline and additional challenges me very interested in running it back through Hard mode. Also, I really enjoy the difficulty of some of the end game bosses. Although I cleared several on one try, others definitely caused me to wipe.

Great remake with a daring risk that could ruin it
||Posted . Owned for 3 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This game is probably the best remake ever made. I honestly didn't want them to do it and thought it was going to be a disaster. I stopped following updates on this game around 3 years ago and just installed the demo one night and loved it. Pre-ordered it right away without even watching any trailers. Loved the first 90% of the game, the last part left me uncomfortable and with many concerns. I would still give this game a 9/10 for the amazing work they put into this. It was a gorgeous, beautiful game. Graphics, music, gameplay, and story was honestly amazing. I've gotten 2 people into this game now who never played a FF game before or who never enjoyed that franchise. I highly recommend this game to anyone who's into action games.

Amazing game for new and old fans
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Great game overall. Music, visuals, story are all great. I beat the game in roughly 60+ hrs. Not including getting all of the trophies and what not. Combat is awesome and the lore has been expanded on which is great.

Pleasantly surprised
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I went in skeptical about this game after learning that it isn’t the full game but only an initial part of the first disc. I am so happy that I gave this game a shot blindly without looking at any content online. The game is stunningly beautiful, the story is the exact same as the original but more fleshed out and extended to turn what would be normally 2-3 hours into dozens of hours worth of content. Some of the combat leaves a little bit to be desired but overall, the game is fantastic, addictive and perfect for fans of the original. I still wish it was the full game because once it ended, I found myself wanting more. I can’t wait to see what square does next.

Finally beat it, it's a 10/10
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I can't believe IGN gave it an 8/10 rating. I have played the original FF7 and beat it over 20 times, including defeating Ruby and Emerald Weapons. This remake was what I imagine and much more (except for one really odd new character who only had a small role). Graphics, storyline, game play, all just perfect. It was very nostalgic in every way and the soundtrack was remastered to perfection. I'm glad they extended this to 3 games because that means they remade Midgar (disc 1) perfectly otherwise it would've been shortened and unsatisfying. Can't wait for Disc 2 in 4 years! lol.

Gorgeous, dramatic, and exciting
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This game defies all expectations when it comes to how gorgeous a game can be. The introductory levels convey an incredible sense of drama and life, while the later levels convey a sense of scale that this story definitely deserves. The character models are both visually impressive, and beautifully expressive, which allows minor characters to really shine in a way that they never could in the original version. Some minor graphical hiccups occur (unloaded or poor textures on some places, people popping in randomly), but these are infrequent and not distracting enough to inhibit the artistic direction of the game in any meaningful way. The combat has a great weight and flow, despite being somewhat tricky at first. The game could definitely have done a better job with its tutorials; this is not Dark Souls! But overall I found that I was able to manage the vast majority of the game myself on Normal. Only a couple annoying fights near the end gave me significant trouble, one of which is due to a developer mistake in a regular encounter. The materia system allows for a ton of flexibility and creativity on the part of the player, which is always refreshing! The only major issue I had with the game is the "Nomura needs an editor" problem that occasionally crops up in titles such as Kingdom Hearts. Without spoiling anything, the second to last chapter is an incredibly long and somewhat dull slog with almost nothing directly pertinent to the story, while the last chapter is a mad rush of both insanely intricate (and wildly impressive) boss fights and an unbelievable amount of plot exposition. The issue is that the last chapter really doesn't have enough explanation for the complexity of what is going on, and the final fights can feel a touch undeserved because of this confusion. But lurking just under the surface of this obscurity is a truly phenomenal plot and some incredible creative action. This pretty much comes down to a pacing and cryptic language issue in the last chapter. Trust me, a second play through will be infinitely more rewarding with the understanding of events you will get in the last chapter. I would highly recommend this game to anyone, though only with the caveat that you should not be afraid to use the internet when you get the "I'm not totally sure I follow" feeling; you will get a lot more out of it if you manage to understand the small details.

Lives up to its name
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've been looking forward to a remake for years and after the long wait it's safe to say this has been worth the wait. Aesthetically this game looks amazing! This game is pretty lengthy and offers a fair amount of side quests and in-depth character development missing from the original title. Overall the storyline is pretty strong but I feel like at certain points the voice acting misses the mark. If you aren't familiar with the combat style and are expecting a turn based experience, similar to the original game, you might be disappointed. Though the combat system is smooth and meshes well with all the updates made to the game it doesn't have the same feeling as before. You'll likely be pleased to see the materia system hasn't changed much but the inclusion of weapon upgrades feels like a remnant from FF X sphere system but is intuitive and a refreshing addition. Overall, this game is great. Don't expect to beat it in a day or a weekend for that matter. This game is like a good coffee, best when sipped, but never gets old.

Great reimagining of a classic
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Recently replayed the original, & there's plenty of change besides graphics & mechanics... BUT I thought they added to the story & experience, not took away or changed the overall meaning. Most added context &/or depth where 1997 tech (& historically bad translation) limited their ability before. The only knock I have is more to do with dividing it up, but that won't be too bad depending how many more pieces they release it in & how long (if it's years my favorable view will sour some)

A great successor to the original Final Fantasy 7
||Posted . Owned for 4 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This re imagining of the original Final Fantasy 7 is amazing as it has great game play derived from Kingdom Hearts/ Final Fantasy 15 and amazing English voice acting. The graphics were also top notch on the PS4 with some graphical limitations. All of this combined makes it have more of a realistic story feel compared to the original game. Its just very unfortunate that it isn't the complete Final Fantasy 7 experience since its only around 1/3 of the entire story. There will be more parts to this game that will be released but it seems that it could take a few years which is disappointing. Another con is that the game graphics has weird texture issues that has to take a moment to load on both PS4 and PS4 Pro which can sometimes ruin the immersion of the game. Whether or not you have played the original Final Fantasy 7 game, this is an amazing game play experience that you wouldn't regret purchasing.
