    Great Air Conditioner Well Made!

This air conditioner is easy to install and powerful enough for a small bedroom. It is also fairly quiet especially if its on low. The Energy saving feature is excellent and shuts the ac off when it gets too cold. The remote works perfect and the A/C is light enough for one person to install. I would recommend this too anyone who needs a quiet ac in the bedroom and like to save money on their bill.

Great A/C Unit For Two Years .. But So Inexpensive

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I bought this two summers ago ... Worked great for two summers .. just like most of these cheap A/C units. For those who are older, A/C units with this kind of power would run 600 dollars or more .... when 600 bucks was a lot of money. We had our first 86 degree day in NYC yesterday. I nearly died. This a/c unit which SERVED me, was pumping out lukewarm cool air. At 2 AM, I got on the computer and ordered an 8,000 BTU Frigidaire A/C unit off of amazon ... basically, that's now as inexpensive as when I bought the 6,000 BTU unit. It's coming tomorrow. This baby has had it ... But I paid like 160 bucks for it ...... Oh yea, in the beginning there was a noise problem. Here's the secret .. when you HEAR THAT NOISE, you KNOW your machine isn't perfectly level (in accordance with the instructions). I suffered a week or two with the noise, till it got overpowering. Shifted the unit a bit ... and nary a bit of noise the next few days. 4 stars is good. But they just don't last. I live in NYC ... with the constant, dust, dirt, grit entering these units ... Now I clean my filter .... and if it wasn't so expensive, I could probably have this unit taken out, steam cleaned ... and MAYBE .. it'd be working again ... but that would cost me far more than a brand new one with warranty ... and the new ones have some sort of air cleaner in it (we'll see how that works) .... When I first installed the 6,000 unit, I was saving 60 dollars a month in electricity. New Yorkers KNOW, Con Ed our utilitiy company, jacks up electric prices upwards of 3X the normal bill during the summer months .... My advice, buy it ... better still, go for another 30 bucks and buy the 8,000 btu unit. The compact model is not much bigger than this one and you won't have to push the unit at full velocity. PS : Don't buy a cheap, NON ENERGY SAVE A/C UNIT. You will save bucks at purchase, but pay back the savings, the first month in increased energy costs .... believe me ...

Works well, but has noise issue

    Posted .

This unit cools well, and has a well designed user interface. The problem as described in a few other reviews, is the fan noise. To be clear, the ordinary fan noise is not the issue, but when the condensation tray eventually fills with water, the fan splashes the water on the internal parts for cooling purposes. Problem is, it makes an annoying scritchy-scratchy noise doing so. I spoke to Frigidaire twice, and this is by design. I asked about drilling a drain hole in the pan, and of course they don't recommend it, but won't say what bad will happen other than voiding the warranty. Apparently many other manufacturers use the same design. I needed the A/C, so I decided to keep it. I bit the bullet and drilled a quarter inch hole in the center of the bottom pan about three inches from the back. No more scratchy noise. If you decide to do this, be very careful where you drill the hole, or you've got non-returnable non-working junk on your hands. It has been a couple of weeks, and so far it is still working well.

It was easy to install but after a couple of days started making all kinds of weird noises. I pulled the unit out a couple of time before I figured out that water was collecting in the back and not draining. The water was hitting the fan. After I drilled a whole in the bottom, the noise went away and I have been happy with it ever since.

Purchased A/C unit for smaller bedroom (10 x 14 ) and works fine. Like to remote control option, sleep mode, energy saving mode. Like the fact the the AC Unit turns off when temperature range has been reached. Has some noise, but not disturbingly so while sleeping. Easy to install. Side panels are somewhat to be desired as in most AC Window units. Satisfied with the purchase.

can be noisy, but there is a solution

Within 2 hours of installing this unit on a humid day, I heard the noises described by so many others that reviewed this product. This unit does not drain well and was full of water. The answer is to drill a small hole in the lowest point of the pan just behind the rear fan. If you look through the side , you can see this area clearly and avoid hitting anything inside the air conditioner when you do this. Once this is done the water will fall outside and the noise is diminished. It is actually a pretty quiet model, much better than the Fedders model it replaced.

Noisy until you follow reviewers' advice

I was having the same issues mentioned here with an inconsistent rattling sound going on inside the machine, as much as I appreciated how well the AC cooled my room. The noise was driving me crazy so I figured it had to be a defect (and sadly wasted my time exchanging the thing at Best Buy for the same model, before I thought to read reviews here). The second machine--no surprise--had the same noise issue, so I read the reviews and knew I had to try the recommended fix: drilling holes in the bottom. I drilled three holes to drain the water from the machine, one on the left and two on the right, and so far the problem hasn't repeated itself (thank goodness)! Now the AC sounds like a normally-functioning one, and it's great. The machine cools well and honestly it's aesthetically pleasing with the centered digital display. The remote is great, too. However, I'll never buy another Frigidaire AC again since I don't trust their ability to come up with a good design. Notice that Home Depot doesn't even sell this model (or any Frigidaire ACs as far as I know), and Best Buy would do well it discontinue selling it ASAP.

Great when you correct the design flaw

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

The air conditioner works great and cools a 10'x12' room by several degrees in a few minutes. It is also very quiet once you fix the design flaw. The problems is evident after just a few hours of use. The water from the condensation does not drain out of the pan because there is no hole at the lowest point. As a result the fan causes splashing and gurgling noises. After 2 minutes with a drill and putting 2 holes in the lowest point the water drains fine and the unit is very quiet. Overall a great unit for the money if you are handy with a drill.

The A/C is great...very pleased with it!

This A/C beats my imagination! It is not all that noisy, it is easy to install and it cools the room very fast. I say it is not all that noisy because its kind of noise is very acceptable to me and my family, we can sleep comfortable well with the noise, we can still watch TV with the noise…which is far better than most window unit A/Cs I have bought in that are so noisy such that you cannot hear the TV, and whose noise at bedtime is akin to the rancorous noise of a train passing by. With this 6000 BTU Frigidaire A/C, it meets my cooling needs of my room, the remote is okay, and the features are very effective. I first bought one for my kids’ room and when I noticed its amazing cooling functionality, I had no choice to buy another 6000 BTU Frigidaire A/C, this time for my bedroom to replace the “noisy portable A/C” I was using before. I do not have regret and we are still enjoying the two A/Cs.

Good air conditioner, details aren’t perfect

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

This air conditioner is small, light, cools well, and isn't too expensive. It falls down a bit on the details: there's a ridiculously loud beep when you plug it in or press any of its buttons. I mean, absurdly loud... loud enough to hurt your ears when you're standing right in front of it; loud enough to not want to adjust anything if someone's asleep nearby because it would wake them right up. It feels like the same volume as an ambulance siren. Frigidaire would have done better not to have any sound at all. It also lacks a fresh air vent, and its temperature display only shows how cold you'd like the room to be, not how cold the room actually is. Still, a good unit.

I've had this a/c for about 3 weeks. I don't see what anyone is saying about the noise. This a/c is quiet and for a 195sq foot room, it does the trick. It was even listed in Consumer Reports in June or July 2010. Go to your local library and check out the magazine yourself, or if you attend college and are able to access your school's library from home, do a search of "Air conditioner reviews" and "consumer reports". This a/c is not listed as a "best buy", but it is close. The room I'm using this to cool is my living room/dining room/kitchen!!! Large studio with separate bedroom...what can I say?! The room is about 195sq feet and this a/c does the trick. I think this a/c is a good value, it's not a GREAT a/c, but for the price and that new coolant it uses that supposedly is not great (but meets new fed regulations), I give this 4 stars. The remote is kinda cool too! Oh...also, I bought it online for 169.99 and the next week it was on sale in the store for 161.49. Since I bought this on my best buy card, and I mentioned the price difference to them, they were able to deduct the 8.50. Cool.

    Excellent unit - great value

I've had this unit for about three months now. It is installed in a 'bonus' room (12X12) above the garage which I've turned into a spare bedroom/game room. Aside from being above the garage this room gets the full afternoon sun. It has always been the hottest room in the house and running my expansive computer and sound systems it literally turns the room into an oven. This air conditioner handles the extreme conditions of this room with no problem. It takes minutes to go from an oven to a comfortable temperature. Took minutes to install and have had no problems since I bought it. I highly recommend this unit and for $169.00 you will be hard-pressed to find a better value.

Compressor is noisy, vibrates a lot

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

The filter cover on the front rattles a lot. So I took it off. Looks ghetto now but is quieter. Will deal with that though. Had an old Emerson Quiet Cool that produced 64dB on a non-calibrated sound level ap on my android. The Fridigaire is registering 59. Noticeably quieter to the ear, but more of a low end hum from the compressor. At least it doesn't start up in the middle of the night so loudly that you think something hit the window. They call them 'window shakers' for a reason. And this unit defines that reason. The whole cabinet REALLY vibrates. I ended up not using the billows and put sticky foam insulation around where the insulated wood panels are (to fill the 1/4" gaps). That helped. Also put foam on the bottom, and in the groove of the upper track and that helped as well. The internal ducting is styrofoam insulation and it allows some light through. Also lets in sounds from outside. The old emerson had insulated metal and blocked outside noise FAR better. But hey, I paid $149 at BB on sale, so I cannot complain a lot. I live in a small 550sf duplex, and will be installing a "split" system next year. It's a rental unit, but I plan on being here for a long time (might even offer to buy the place). I hear the LG LW6013ER does a pretty good job, but it doesn't allow you to aim the airflow upwards. Probably should have got that unit and just made a gizmo to direct the airflow. /First time window unit buyer. /Will never get one with styrofoam internal ducting again.

    Quietest in its class

I've used several brands and sizes of window air conditioners, and having now owned four of this particular A/C, I can say the quality and performance are excellent. I live in the desert, where condensation quickly evaporates except when it's actually raining; the only times I've heard the fan swishing in the water were after heavy sideways rain when the rain itself got into the unit's drip fan. But I can see that in humid conditions, the condensate might build up enough to fill up the pan, and if there are no drain holes, that means eventually the fan will hit the water. One thing to check is that it's installed at the correct angle. You can tell that by making sure that the fittings that the pleated wings fit into are vertical. I had metal framed windows at my last apartment. My solution was to cut a piece of wood to be long enough to fit inside the channel at the sides of the window, and then screw the top of the A/C to that. This was quite secure, and had the advantage of letting me either push the window down on top of the wood or opening the window above it if the weather was cool. I considered doing the same in my classic wooden sash windows, but so far I've been too lazy. Because metal framed windows don't dampen sound like wooden ones do, I put high-density closed cell foam below the unit to cushion any vibrations, which made a noticeable difference. I did notice that the condenser noise was louder with a metal framed window. One thing I've found about window units in general is that they get louder with age. After 4-5 years of heavy use in an exposed west-facing apartment with no shade at all, my oldest unit was noisy enough that I sold it at a discount when I moved, not realizing I'd still need air conditioners in this place. It still worked great, though, and was still quieter than most air conditioners its size. If an air conditioner is clanking and making mechanical noises, it's broken and you should exchange it at the dealer. If not, you are probably getting the normal noise of low-budget cooling or, if your building is old like mine, the only option when central air isn't available. Any window air conditioner is makes a significant amount of white noise, and when the condenser comes on there's a humming sound. All of this creates white noise, which means music or television must be louder, and you don't want to talk on the phone when you're next to it. This particular A/C doesn't make a big clunk when the condenser comes on, and if it's seated well in the window (and the window is soundly constructed), it doesn't rattle or buzz.

I read reviews about this unit being on the noisy side.... um.... if you want an extremely quiet AC.... let me tell you that this does not exist, it does make a little noise, like ANY electronic device has their unique noise, but after a couple of minutes, you don't even notice it anymore, it did not interrupt my sleep at all and it sure cooled down my room so quick, it's not even funny. Very easy to set up, i believe that the price is just right and I love my new AC, had an awesome good night rest with it!

    Good AC

As others have posted somehow in all this manufacturers wisdom they managed to make an Air Conditioner without a drain! Since there is no drain hole out the back the water builds up causing the fan to make noise as it splashes through the water. Drilling one hole in the left bottom corner back of unit fixed the noisy fan (a scraping sound) problem and now the AC drains as it should. Air conditioner seems to work fine. Seemed to work ok without the drain hole but the fan noise was annoying and it can't be good for the fan splashing through the water. So if your handy with a drill I recommend. If not then you might want to look for another Air Conditioner.

Our home central AC went out on a Friday night. We bought this on Saturday to keep us cool until the new AC was installed on Tuesday. This unit installed easily and did great. It kept a 200 sq ft room comfortably cool for four days in really hot weather. The thing ran nonstop without a problem.
