GE microwaves were top rated in the 2015 Consumer Reports. My particular model number was not one of the ones CR tested. But I am still disappointed in its performance. This purchase was a replacement for a 10 year old similar Whirlpool brand over-the-range microwave that suddenly stopped producing microwave heat. That one was a deluxe model with 1200 watts power (GE is only offering 1100 watts this year) with a built in resistance heating grill. I never used the microwave for grilling so didn’t spend extra for the GE model that has a grill. Both the old Whirlpool and my new GE have options for automatically cooking certain foods. The Whirlpool has a screen that displays such options. The GE is limited to special buttons for each item. The Westinghouse had a display that gave instructions for preparing foods for microwave cooking. For example, for poached chicken breast it said to put breast in closed microwave safe container with 2 tablespoons of water, enter the weight of the chicken, and then press the button to cook it automatically. For baked potatoes it asked how many potatoes was on the plate. My new GE has a button specifically for cooking potatoes, but doesn’t ask how many potatoes are being cooked. The old Whirlpool cooked the potatoes perfectly every time. The new GE first gave me an undercooked potato and then overcooked it when I put it back and pressed the button again. The automatic cooking is done via a humidity sensor. I could have bought a similar GE microwave without a humidity sensor for over $100 less than I paid for this model. I was hoping that current microwave technology had improved the distribution and reflection of the microwave so that the new 1100 watt models were as efficient as the 10 year old 1200 watt model. However, I find that in manual cooking I have to set longer times than I did with the higher power Whirlpool to reach the same food temperature..

If you are looking for a reliable full-sized microwave, check this one out. It has a large capacity and all the features we were looking for. If it is as reliable as the same-brand one we just replaced after 15 years, we will be VERY happy.

I originally looked at the GE Cafe microwaves but struggled to pay such a high price. I purchased a really nice GE Cafe range so knew I would do the bulk of my cooking with the range. I asked several sales associates about this microwave and they all said that it was good quality compared to the Cafe series and there wasn't much of a difference. They were right. I love this microwave. It heats quickly and is very quiet. It looks great above my range. Very happy with this purchase.

Recent purchase ~ replaced 18yr old GE Microwave. Easy transition with some extras that I like. Have to watch timing as it is more powerful than the old one
