Bought this game for my Spring Break vacation. Great way to spend a staycation. And I found it for way cheaper on Best Buy Online than anywhere else. And brand new!

A true classic (slightly overrated) with great graphics, an amazing story, great music, and fun combat. But little variety of enemies and especially bosses. The skin customization is very minimalist. What I liked the most is the relationship between Atreus and Kratos, evolving as the game progresses and puts them into more and more challenging situations. The voice acting and characters in the game are fantastic. The game still looks really impressive almost 5 years later.

Wow. Kratos is back is an epic tale. Amazing graphics, an enthralling story, smooth and effective control, action galore, and family bonding. What more can you ask from a game that transitioned from its camera view to up close and more visceral. It was a bold move and works flawlessly. There are indicators to let you know if enemies are behind as you get used to new view. Also, it is a lengthy adventure, so you will savor the journey. Also, a New Game+ plus mode is imminent, so even more action is on the way. A great entry into the series.

This is a no brainer purchase. It is a must own for any PS4/5 owner.
It hooks you in the game immediately. You really get a sense of a high budget blockbuster presentation with this game.
If you only play games like Animal Crossing, then this game may not be for you, but for anyone wanting a thrilling challenge adventure, this is it.
I also recommend Spider-Man.

This GotY edition of God of War (the new reboot) is amazing. Worth the $20 price tag, as this is easily one of the best Playstation titles that's come out in a while. On the fence? Give it a shot. The story is so rich, and it goes right into the sequel as well. Happy to add this to my shelf!

From the few hours (8-9) that have been playing it is a pleasant experience overall, the graphics are awesome, the setting of the game makes it feel somehow expansive, mysterious and rather magical, personally I like that.
As a fan of the series I can say that it feels refreshing to play God of War within a different setting, with a different camera angle and weapons, I’m enjoying it every second of course.
Good
•Graphics
•Story (just haven’t finished it yet)
•Heads up display (only appears when needed)
•Difficulty (playing on hard is an actual challenge)
•Remap buttons options (having it is always welcomed)
Bad
•Cluttered menus (like the one showing your quests, your armor and customization ones)
•Nothing else yet...
It has been a great game up to this point, so I’m looking forward to get the platinum.

This is definitely closer to Uncharted 4 than Breath of the Wild -- at least for the first several hours.
I haven't made it super far into the game, but early on you're not really allowed to explore the world. It's very linear and scripted, but the game itself is sorta blended with the "movie" aspects, so it has a nice seamlessness style with it.
An apt comparison to Zelda games, though, is all the puzzles. It's all very environmental and blended into the scenery, and you have to solve the puzzles to move forward through the world kind of like a permanent zelda dungeon.
The only awkward part -- besides the sorta painfully obvious tropes -- is how there's so much restriction to go along with the story. Again, I don't know if this is only the first portion of the game, and I just haven't made it to where things open up further ... but it reminds me so far of being like a much much much more restricted version of "Horizon: Zero Dawn". That too has an early story part, and of course Breath of the Wild has the plateau, but they're really just restricted portions of the game that teach the mechanics. God of War, though, feels like it's restricting sooooo much so that you can follow along the story -- a lot more like an Uncharted kind of game. You basically follow a super limited path until you get to an open-ish area, and then that area turns into a big fight arena, you beat the baddies or maybe fight a boss or mini boss, and then you move forward with some puzzles and bonuses if you're willing to explore and look for stuff on the side ... but if you look around toooo much, you'll find that there's basically nothing in most places.
I'm still early in the game, and it gives the impression that the game opens up and places become areas to return to and go through again, but I haven't seen any of that yet, and with the amount of time I've put in so far, games like "Horizon: Zero Dawn" and "Breath of the Wild" would have already opened up to the "open world" aspect.
Basically, it's like an Uncharted version of "Horizon: Zero Dawn" that's promising the open world freedom and side missions and things, but maybe it's just a different kind of balance between freedom and story, and this is just leaning more towards story.
The axe is super friggin' dope, though, and playing on harder difficulties really requires you to coordinate a LOT to deal with even just 2, let alone 15 baddies at the same time. Especially as you have like flaming rock throwing monsters on ledges and crazy shielded monsters and running around hyper monsters, and it's just like 20 things happening at once, which is awesome. It's challenging, but it's not infuriating, because it basically comes down to forcing you to act like a movie action hero. You have to toss baddies into other baddies, throw your axe up at the ledge baddie's head then kick the monster in front of you, call your axe back and follow up the kick with a smash, and just power through like it's a crazy coordinated fight scene. It's a really really neat learning curve and style for success.
There are ways to possibly hide or run in and smash and run out, but that's really only possible with the big troll bosses, because it's kinda how they're designed to be fought. For the regular fights, you can't really "cheat", because everyone sorta has a pattern, and you're meant to jump between each type of baddie so that the timing of their attack patterns lines-up with your attacks and you don't get destroyed immediatley. If you try and cheap-shot from a distance, it's like a weird timing thing where you have to wait for the pattern to loop and jump in once every loop. It's possible, but extra extra tedious, and it's basically an indication that you're doing the game wrong. You shoulda planned better and looked cooler.
Super self-contained and not sure how replayable it'd be, if you just rush through games, but it's worth going through it and it seems pretty well stuffed to be worth the playthrough.

What a great game. I had a chance to play the original from the PS2 and it was OK. This blows it out of the water. I really like how they made this game. Great voice acting, great story and progression. You're given a lot of freedom to explore at your own pace almost from the very beginning. Some parts can be challenging at times, but with upgrades to weapons, attacks, and armor, you can make short work of your foes in no time. There are quests aplenty and many treasures and collectibles to loot. Fun and challenging enemy battles too.

I play allot of games for ps4 pro, xbox one x, switch and pc. For this reason I often dont finish games before another game comes out that I "have to play" and then distracts away from it. That said, I beat this game and then started playing it a second time! Awesome story, gameplay, controls and graphics, you really can not lose with this game. I am a bit if a graphics snob (especially due to my high end pc) but I have to say that this game consitantly impresses in this area and really shines on a ps4 pro playing on a 4k tv. There is nothing to think about here, just buy it!

God of War is a breath of fresh air from a series that has gotten to caught up in the same tired design. Combat is completely revamped and has a much deeper feel to it.
With a wide array of difficulties to choose from you can tailor how hard you want to make the game. the difficulties range from face roll enemies easily to downright brutal to the point where you may get stuck for an hour+ in some places.
The story is grand and never really gets dull in any particular area. Even while walking around you will get a lot of dialogue between the father and son so things will never be too quiet.

I was pleasantly surprised when I first played this game. It is a very different type of game compared to the older God of War titles. The story, exploration, and combat are much more fleshed out and profound. The visuals are very nice overall. There are a few plot twists here or there that envelope you into the world of this game. You grow fond of the characters you encounter by the end of the game. There is also much challenge throughout the game even on modest difficulty settings. Overall, I would recommend this game to anyone looking for a RPG / exploration style game.

One of the best games I've ever played. I have always liked the God of War series but hated the sexuality and crap in them. This one focused more on being a good game, great mechanics, fantastic story, and such great gameplay and graphics. I've read reviews saying it was the best looking game there is and I have to agree. Seeing Kratos as an older man with so much detail was incredible. He's still amazingly strong, but he looks weathered, he's got gray sprinkled in his beard, his actions aren't repetitive like other games. There's only a few times where I thought to myself that they just reused a scene, way they walked, etc. The whole time Kratos and his son chat together like literally just chat about random crap. There is one part of the game where you do the same thing over and over if you'd like and the son does reuse some phrases. Besides that, it is always flowing, unique, etc. After battles he will ask Kratos "how was that?" Kratos then gives him feedback, it's not the same either, it starts out like you need more training, then becomes things like you are improving but don't stop, to you are doing good, etc. It's amazing how much attention to detail they gave this game. I love Zelda, hands down my favorite series. I also love Final Fantasy as a series but haven't been too thrilled with 12, 13, 13-2, 13-whatever. Zelda Breath of the Wild became my favorite game last year. I loved that game so much, played for hours. Since that time I didn't think I'd find another game that made me feel that good playing it. God of War blew away all expectations and has jumped up to my 2nd favorite game. So much to do but not ridiculous like Far Cry, Elder Scrolls, Fallout, etc. Those games that tend to reset your quests and reuse them. This doesn't do that. There is so much to do and it's actually enjoyable to do them. Upgrades are fantastic, the system is amazing, and everything is absolute fun. The collectibles are attainable. I didn't have to look up anything so far and I've 100% all of the areas except the main one which I've gotten 88%. All that is with just going with the story, inspecting my areas, solving puzzles, whatever. It wasn't too complicated but def not too easy. I cannot tell you how great this game is. Seriously, the team that made this should be so proud. I know some people don't consider games art but there are certain games where you cannot play it and not recognize it as art. This game is art. You can feel the passion the team had, the attention to detail, the love for this game, and time they put into it. It speaks and I would recommend this to anyone. I would honestly buy a ps4 just for this game, even if it's the only game you ever play, you won't be sad. PS4 pro would be the smarter option as it looks so freaking sexy on a 4K tv. This is the kind of game that you want but never get.

This is the kind of game you don't really have to be 100% familiarized with the story in order to enjoy. In fact, I can argue the opposite: the less familiarized you are with God of War, the more you will enjoy this.
The game has beautiful graphics and a nice story. Some people (particularly those familiarized with GOW) are a bit annoyed by "boy." By now, you have probably seen or heard about the memes. Don't let that discourage you. And at $24.99 (at the time of this review) is a total steal. Even the regular price of $39.99 is a good deal for this game.

One of the Best action adventure games of 2018 hands down. I've been following the God Of War series since the original Playstation and this latest iteration is the best so far. You DO NOT have to play the prior games in order to follow the series, it seems Santa Monica Studio has made a different story but still keeps the G.O.W. legacy going.
Here's my take on it the story, I would compare this to the latest Wolverine movie as an analogy. It's been many years since GOW 3, an aging Kratos has left Greek universe and now running away from his past is trying to start new in the Norse universe, where he wanted to live a quiet life. After his second wife dies and leave him with his son Atreus, his wife's dying wish is to scatter her ashes on the top of the highest mountain which Atreus wants to complete with great enthusiasm. As they prepare and wait for Atreus to get over a sickness, the shadowy and menacing Norse God, Baldur appears at their door and forces Kratos to face his past. This is were the game starts and their journey to fulfill Krato's wife's dying wish begins.
The game is different from the past GOW games. Kratos now wields the Leviathan Axe, a weapon left to him by his late wife. In the past, Kratos had the blades of chaos with it's long reach gave players a sense of comfort knowing it will reach enemies keeping them at a good distance even from behind. This sort of weapon made past GOW games more of a hack and slash, button mashing type of game. It's still this way don't get me wrong but to less of an extent and more on precision. The Leviathan Axes are now my favorite weapon for Kratos. It forces players to get out of their "keeping enemies at a safe distance" and get them out of their comfort zone. As you play and develop both Kratos and Atreus, the story of father and son pulls you in and makes you closer to their characters and their dysfunctional relationship.
I give this game the best score for enjoyment of playing the game and well as the story line. The creators somehow pulled out a rabbit out of their hats when creating this story of continuing the GOW franchise. At first it seemed stupid but as the story and game play progress the story is perfect.

Sony Studios make some great games! They always look good, have a great story, and are fun. Sony has set a high bar for single-player games.
Can't beat the Playstation Hits price as well. Games like this are a Steal for $19.99 or under.

Well that was unexpected! After playing through the original trilogy and spin off PSP titles God of War had entertained but also wore out its welcome as gaming matured. God of War was always a graphical showcase with an entertaining plot and gameplay but the formula had undoubtedly aged past its prominence.
When the new game was announced myself, like many, was left shocked. I was surprised not only by the return of a long dormant franchise but by the tone of the initial reveal. It showed something the previous games didn’t even hint at, heart. While impressed by the trailer I certainly intended to eventually play but it was low on my list of expectations. When the review embargo was lifted and seeing all of the glowing reviews I had to see if it was deserving. Turns out this is not merely the best God of War games but one of the best this generation has yet offered. Besides again setting a new bar for visuals, the game has a dynamic combat system that opens up as the game progresses.
The story is a well told story if a bit derivative. The plot makes good use of many well-worn fantasy tropes and is by no means groundbreaking but what sets it apart is the characterization of the various protagonists. Kratos finally gets a small bit of depth but is overshadowed by Atreus and their dwarven compatriots along with other characters met along the journey are each lovingly crafted and acted.
The structure of the game is much more open and resembles modern action RPGs more than its predecessors. The upgrade system and skill trees can come across as cumbersome and daunting but can be left alone for most of the game. Those who wish to dive into the gameplay systems will have much to customize in terms of loot and skills and play styles similar to that of the Soul’s series of games, barring the notorious difficulty of the aforementioned games. This is a rewarding and surprising title through and through. I recommend this to anyone whether familiar with the franchise or not.

I've played and enjoyed all of the God of War games and this one is by far the most enjoyable. You get all the same great action, but with a great story and beautiful visuals. Combat isn't as simple as the previous entries, but controls are logical. Battles can be very difficult even on the easier difficulty settings.

...and absolutely <<must have right now>> if you have a PS4 Pro. Absolutely gorgeous game on a 4k display, and to top it off, one of the best modern re-imaginings of an old franchise ever created.
If you are a diehard fan of the arcade-y hack&slash, frenetic combo driven gameplay of the prior GoW and DmC games, you will absolutely be disappointed, no question. But if your tastes have changed towards story driven fantasy RPG's with incredibly fluid, dynamic combat, this is a game for you. I'll go right out and say I never really liked the original GoW games. Played 1&3, never replayed them. Just not my style of game. This is a much more thoughtful, slowly paced experience with a lot going on in the story department, and much more skill, item and stat management in the combat. You can easily get through just picking up gear as it comes, or you can hyper min-max to fit your play style. Combat is very similar to Dark Souls, but at a much faster pace, and with far less weapon options, but infinitely more combat skills and movement variety.
The game world is breathtakingly gorgeous and varied. It's not as grand and epic in size as some other open world RPG's, but the focus allows it's two main characters and landscapes to be fleshed out beautifully. Never did I think I'd say Kratos, the epitome of revenge and unbridled rage, is a complex and brooding protagonist. Atreus is exactly as you would hope he would be. This is not an endless escort mission as many worried, this is a powerful journey where two inseparable companions grow their bond to become more than the sum of their selves. All of the side characters all well voiced and interesting in their own right as well, and their interactions range from emotionally moving to downright hilarious.
It's just a great gd game. Go get it. My only complaint is that eventually it ends. This is one of those games that forces you to lower your expectations when moving on to another game.
