I've played and enjoyed all of the God of War games and this one is by far the most enjoyable. You get all the same great action, but with a great story and beautiful visuals. Combat isn't as simple as the previous entries, but controls are logical. Battles can be very difficult even on the easier difficulty settings.

...and absolutely <<must have right now>> if you have a PS4 Pro. Absolutely gorgeous game on a 4k display, and to top it off, one of the best modern re-imaginings of an old franchise ever created. If you are a diehard fan of the arcade-y hack&slash, frenetic combo driven gameplay of the prior GoW and DmC games, you will absolutely be disappointed, no question. But if your tastes have changed towards story driven fantasy RPG's with incredibly fluid, dynamic combat, this is a game for you. I'll go right out and say I never really liked the original GoW games. Played 1&3, never replayed them. Just not my style of game. This is a much more thoughtful, slowly paced experience with a lot going on in the story department, and much more skill, item and stat management in the combat. You can easily get through just picking up gear as it comes, or you can hyper min-max to fit your play style. Combat is very similar to Dark Souls, but at a much faster pace, and with far less weapon options, but infinitely more combat skills and movement variety. The game world is breathtakingly gorgeous and varied. It's not as grand and epic in size as some other open world RPG's, but the focus allows it's two main characters and landscapes to be fleshed out beautifully. Never did I think I'd say Kratos, the epitome of revenge and unbridled rage, is a complex and brooding protagonist. Atreus is exactly as you would hope he would be. This is not an endless escort mission as many worried, this is a powerful journey where two inseparable companions grow their bond to become more than the sum of their selves. All of the side characters all well voiced and interesting in their own right as well, and their interactions range from emotionally moving to downright hilarious. It's just a great gd game. Go get it. My only complaint is that eventually it ends. This is one of those games that forces you to lower your expectations when moving on to another game.

This game is really good. The campaign is long, it feels like you play minutes even though it’s actually hours. It WILL keep you entertained and satisfied. My favorite game difficulty is second to god mode. It’s truely challenging and fun. Unless you are extremely skilled, do not choose god mode. It will end you in mere seconds. Other than than, the game itself has good controls, story, graphics, fighting, dialogue, cutscenes. I am truely glad I bought this.

A More Mature God Of War

It's been about 8 years since a mainline God Of War game (God Of War 3 on PS3, 2010), and it appears the hiatus has done the series some good. With this latest entry, entitled simply "God Of War", the story takes a step in a more mature direction–showing Kratos in a fatherly role, regretting his violent past and the repercussions it entailed. With the Greek gods vanquished, Kratos now reluctantly sets his sights upon the pantheon of Norse mythology. The perspective has shifted into an over-the-shoulder view, which makes for slower, albeit more visceral combat. For a good portion of the game, you'll be using a frost axe instead of Kratos' signature Chains Of Olympus. Throughout your journey, you'll be accompanied by Kratos' son, Atreus...but he's much more of a boon than a hinderance; rarely will he need to be babysat. Instead, he has no life bar and acts mostly to assist in stunning enemies with his bow attacks (although he will quickly become more lethal). Your weapons AND armor can be upgraded as well, which is a new feature to the God Of War franchise. In fact, your armor and attachments greatly influence your stats; different builds may be needed to take on the more difficult foes. The graphics are quite nice on either the standard or pro PS4, though only the latter is capable of 4k and a consistent clip of 60 fps. Still, it's totally playable on the standard PS4 at a respectable 30 fps. If there's one gripe I have, it's that you really don't feel like much is accomplished story-wise by the end of the game–it's clearly a setup for a new trilogy. That said, I'd welcome a couple more entries into the God Of War series using this new perspective and gameplay style. Definitely recommended for action aficionados!

Omg if you're a God Of War fan then this is most definitely the game for you. Not going to lie I have only played about 2 hours of gameplay but I have been playing the game longer than that I just keep dying. I have the game set on the next hardest difficulty level and boy it is intense. Graphics are phenomenal on basic PS4 so I can only imagine how GOW looks on PS4 Pro. Game controls feel smooth and fluid and story/plot seems to be great thus far.

I've played the entire series of God of War games. Santa Monica Studios have outdone themselves. This game is immersive, beautiful graphics, excellent voice acting, epic boss battles, a Father and Son story, and so much more. The controls are tight and responsive. I'm playing at standard difficulty and it is still quite challenging at times, but not frustratingly so. If you own a PS4 or especially a PS4 Pro with a 4k TV you must play this game!

Excellent game. GOW is a beautifully made game that has just about everything — great story line, intuitive controls, power-ups and leveling are very good, lore and treasure are well thought out, characters and dialog are best in class, lots of hidden gems, fun and immersive game play. This is one of the nicest looking ps4 games with hours of game play. GOW has my vote for game of the year. Lives up to the hype —It’s a must buy.

For fans of the GoW series, there is much to love as we see Kratos transform from a rage filled deity to a troubled and secretive father. Those who know his past are treated to incredible character development as the Ghost of Sparta tries to be a good father to his young boy. Those who are new to the series get to learn about Kratos and his past through his sons eyes, the truth hidden from them. Beyond this, the new gameplay reflects the more tempered life that Kratos has built for himself. Gone are the days of frantic button mashing, for now players are expected to master precise combat which demands the right tool for the job. The combat feels more akin to Dark Souls rather than Devil May Cry, for those familiar. However, the game does an excellent job introducing new concepts slowly and is fairly forgiving on lower difficulties. For those seeking a challenge, you will be easily satisfied with the challenges God of War throws at you. All in all, this game has quickly become my favorite game I have ever played. When playing it, you can tell that it was made as a labor of love, that the story it tells was meant for someone special, and that the creators poured their hearts and souls into their work to tell this story. Other games I have recently enjoyed include Horizon: Zero Dawn, Zelda BotW, Mario Odyssey, The Last of Us, and the Dark Souls series. I can not recommend this game enough; it has become the new standard to which I hold action adventure games to. Well done Santa Monica Studios, all the praise is well deserved.

Great melee action game that becomes open-world

God of War games usually have some satisfying, big wham-slam type of melee action with big sequences and brutal action. This game tries to make that become less bombastic, and a bit more methodical in terms of complexity. Its still somewhat simplistic, but there's more complexity and that helps it become more satisfying to play, especially if you have gotten tired of the old formula. So, that's just one aspect of the game, and in previous games that's pretty all you needed to talk about because, every other aspect of the game was always simple and linear. You just kept moving ahead in a level and killing everything, and you kept doing that until the game was over. This game completely break that mold, and it gives you more in every other aspect. Its an open-world game, you have optional quests, you have the ability to upgrade your weapon, you have a much more expansive set of options for upgrading your abilities. There's more objectives than just the main story. Its a much meatier game all-around. And on top of that, its story is much more mature and dramatic, but they still retain some of those epic, bombastic moments. They do an interesting job with the lore in the game, because they leave the previous backstory and they go to a new place. Its a great looking game, through and through. They have done a great job making God of War interesting again with an expanded formula.

I’ve loved GOW since the PS2, and own every game that has come out. The only issue I’ve had is they started to get repetitive. I love the more adventure style of gameplay of this one. This is also a very beautiful looking game. Controls are tight, and story is epic. Can’t beat BB’s great sale price as well. Don’t miss out on this one, it is superb.

This game represents the next evolution for Kratos with a whole new setting, weapons and powers compared to the previous games. The story is well-written and the action ramps up over the course of the game. The addition of his son introduces an interesting and emotional dynamic to the game play. The graphics look stunning, probably one of the best looking games on the PS4 to date.

This God of War is the best to date - by far. By best I mean, all elements of a complete video game are there. The battle system has greatly progressed from the fun, yet child-like simplicity of older versions. The equipment and skills leveling is simple enough for the hack-and-slash fans, yet deep enough for an RPG fan like me to get into. The pace and aggressiveness of the enemies may still force you to revert to hack-and-slashing, and you may not need all the complexity, but it's so much more satisfying to use all the tools and skill you've earned if you can master them. The story and accompanying script are much more memorable than previous versions, and that's an understatement - it is quite the cinematic play-through, while not boring you with sequences that feel too long (as other games can do). Finally, the graphics - wow. This was always a highlight of the GOW games, but this is as good as it gets by AAA game standards. From the character animation to the environmental details and the incredible lighting, just beautiful. Overall, the game defies genre norms, churns out the gameplay fun, keeps you interested in the story and gives you incredible eye candy. Is it the best RPG I've ever played? No. Is it the best action game I've ever played? Probably not. Is it one of the best hack-and-slash RPG hybrids I've ever played? Yes.

This is the best game I ever played. I am always a fan of GOW series. Played all the previous games but this is one is obviously the best one. This one came after 5 yrs so it can be seen on the amount of effort and thought put into the game. As always with other GOW games the graphics and gameplay are beautiful. There is no loading screen and very smooth experience for such a beautiful game. Love the action and skill tree. This game is also different from other games in the series- 1) Open world 2) Ability to control other charater i.e Atreus - This guy is a real AI who really helps you with the gameplay and not just stand there and watch you fight like other games. For ex: There is a way to upgrade wherein if the enemies gets closer this guy will jump on top of them and strangle them( so you can focus on other enemies). This guy will also throw health stones at you to replenish yourself. Game also is very long. I have probably played 20% so far. Long way to go. But enjoying every bit of it so far. They have also added some really difficult enemies(purple ones you have to upgrade yourself before you can fight them else they will kill you in one blow!!!!). Side quests are real fun too unlike other games it doesnt get boring, redundant or grinding.. Well for one thing it doesnt have any micro transactions which is awesome too.. Must play!!!

I put this game off for a while and really regret that. I'm a fan of the GoW series and thus is hands down the best and biggest adventure for Kratos I've ever played. Everything about the game just drips quality, from the story to the gameplay. It's tough, but well worth the hours you'll put into it. Simply put, buy this game.

It has been some time since I've played God of War. To once again behold the rage of Kratos with the voice of Christopher Judge is just joy-gasm! He should of been the voice of Kratos from game one. The game has a bit different feel to it due to a more open world movement. Still, plenty of people/creatures/Gods to bash and smash and release Kratos mighty man meat muscles into. With upgrading and crafting new weapons and armors and adding enhancements to each. This time around, you are join with Kratos's son. Who acts like Anakin and Luke Skywalker with his constant whining. Just makes you wish you can Hulk out on him with Kratos's axe...or bare hands. The little brat is helpful during battles though. With his bow and arrows he'll help you take out those who have failed the city! Like Kratos, he does have armor that you can get and upgrade as well as his weapon. There are some great conversations that take place that are funny. And Kratos tends to call his own son by "boy" more than by his own name or son. The world is vast and gorgeous, plenty of side quest to do, a nagging child, more gods and creature to release your frustration on, hours of your life gone into a video game. What more can you Axe for? And Kratos has a lot of Axing to do to get his answers!

Ive also played and finished all the God of War of games and loved every minute of them. When I saw the new one with a slightly aged Kratos I was very interested...so much so I ordered a PS4 Pro just to play it. I set everything up tonight and popped the disc in. I have to say the opening scene alone was incredible! The visuals are jaw dropping and the audio in my theater room is some of the best Ive heard in a while. This was all excellent but I still didn't get to try this new game style something that was totally different than previous iterations of the game. I dont want to ruin anything but I played until I met someone willing to upgrade my Leviathan Axe. All I could think about the entire time I played was how amazing this experience has been. The way the snow pushes out of the way when you or Atreus walks through it is mind blowing. The combat system so far has been very cool a welcome addition to the franchise in my opinion. Fast paced, but not as hectic hack and slash as previous games...It just feels more controlled and I love throwing the Axe! The story is very cool so far and Kratos has this maturity to him that's just awesome (don't worry hes still a beast!). Overall Id say purchasing a PS4 for this game alone was well worth it!!

One of the most striking aspects of God of War is its narrative depth. The story revolves around Kratos and his son, Atreus, embarking on a perilous journey through the realms of Norse mythology. The character development is exceptional, revealing layers of Kratos that extend beyond his rage-filled persona from previous games. The bond between father and son is central to the plot, adding a layer of emotional complexity rarely seen in action games. The game's visual prowess is nothing short of breathtaking. The detailed environments, character models, and mythical creatures showcase the power of the PlayStation 4 hardware. Seamless transitions between cutscenes and gameplay contribute to an immersive experience, making the player feel like a participant in an epic saga. Combat in God of War is a highlight, combining brutal, satisfying melee action with strategic depth. Kratos wields the Leviathan Axe, a versatile weapon that can be thrown and recalled, adding a unique dynamic to battles. The addition of Atreus as a companion introduces a layer of tactical complexity, as he aids Kratos with ranged attacks and assists in puzzle-solving. The game's level design is exceptional, featuring a semi-open world that encourages exploration. Players encounter a variety of challenging enemies and puzzles, keeping the gameplay engaging and rewarding. The integration of Norse mythology is seamless, offering a fresh perspective on legendary creatures and gods. Musically, God of War is elevated by a powerful and evocative score composed by Bear McCreary, perfectly complementing the game's emotional beats and epic moments. In summary, God of War for the PlayStation 4 stands as a masterpiece of modern gaming. With its gripping narrative, stunning visuals, satisfying combat, and emotional depth, it not only revitalizes a beloved franchise but also sets a new standard for the action-adventure genre. Whether you're a long-time fan or a newcomer to the series, God of War is an essential experience for any gamer.

This game is a game where everyone involved put their full creativity into it. This is a game every competitive gamer should experience. The bots are amazing and well coordinated to keep you challenged every minute of the game. It is non stop action and countless boss fights. What I love the most about this game is that it is challenging for even the most experienced gamer even on the easiest difficulty you will encounter a boss that will make it worth your bucks. I am currently playing this game on the hardest difficulty and currently seeing my buddies struggle with even the easiest difficulty. I am usually the gamer who passes single player games in 2-3 days. However, this game playing in the hardest difficulty, not rushing because it is such a great game, as well playing all the side missions can say this game is EPIC. Hours and HOURS of fun. Even in 1080p the game looks amazing. I have found absolutely no glitches while playing this game which is a plus in todays gaming standards. Combat system is one of the best out there. The story is actually quite intriguing but I will leave you guys to find out! I would buy this game twice just to support santa monica studios...
