A New Era of Cinematography
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The IMDB reviews are pretty accurate on this one. The Metascore of 96 is higher than historical blockbusters like Titanic (74) and Saving Private Ryan (90). Only topped by the likes of The Wizard of Oz, Lawrence of Arabia, and The Godfather, each at 100. What the plot lacked in complexity was more than made up for by the visual stimulation. The cinematography is incredible! As detailed in the special features of the movie, every aspect, every line, every movement was scripted and well captured in film. The crew created new ways to manage lighting and exhibit the weightlessness of space. Surprisingly, similar to Avatar, most of the movie was created with CGI but looked as real as, well, being in space. They did an exceptional job of taking the viewer from the void of space to close-ups of the characters to actually inside of the astronauts' helmets to give a full depiction of being in the emptiness of space high above the earth. The movie was action-packed, challenge after challenge to be introduced and conquered, pushing one's will to the brink. The overall plot was a bit extravagant but still within the realm of suspending disbelief. The 91 minutes went by quickly and put it near real-time. It was a long day! Definitely watch in Blue-ray format or better to fully appreciate the full visual effects.

Gravity 3D
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This movie Gravity in 3D was fantastic and very breathtaking. I also recommend watching how the movie was made and what Sandra Bullock, George Clooney and others had to go through to make this movie possible and it took over 4 years for them to create new techniques to make it all look real and believable.

Best Picture 2013?
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Gravity features two eye-popping, near-perfect, top tier video transfers -- a 1080p/MVC-encoded 3D presentation and its 1080p/AVC-encoded 2D counterpart -- both of which have already solidified their place as two of the best Blu-ray presentations of 2014. Color and contrast are flawless, with excellent saturation, lifelike skintones, deep black levels and terrific shadow delineation. Detail is remarkably well-resolved too, with crisp, clean edge definition, wonderfully revealing fine textures and stunning close-ups. Notice the pinpoint stars. The hairs on Bullock's neck or the rough stubble on Clooney's chin. The fingerprints, smudges, dust and scratches on the space suit visors. The age and weathering on the metal tools and tethers Stone and Kowalski have to work with. The thousands and thousands of pieces of debris hurtling around the Earth. The ridges of the mountains and the swirling clouds on the face of the planet. Or the fact that, at the beginning of the film, you can spot Kowalski circling the NASA shuttle almost from the moment the ship comes into view far off in the distance. Just as outstanding is Warner's DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround track. There will be some who complain that the Blu-ray edition of Gravity doesn't include a 7.1 mix, and for good reason. But that by no means should be used to criticize the 5.1 lossless powerhouse we do have. The film's sound design plays a significant role in the experience and it's incredibly effective in the home theater environment. The eerie silence of space is punctuated by breathing, the smallest movements, vibrations traveling through space suits, static-laden NASA communication and other subtleties, all presented here impeccably. LFE output is aggressive, sometimes downright vindictive. (as reviewed by Blu-ray.com)

Outstanding
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. While space adventures like Star Wars and Star Trek are and always will be the epic space dramas that dreams are made of, filmmakers really haven't spent enough time on "down-to-earth" pictures that depict humanity's current explorations in space. Humanity's story began with small-scale satellite-building stories on the outskirts of the Earth and minor, yet important trips to the moon. However, rarely do space adventures hit the big screen without an asteroid plummeting towards Earth, aliens launching invasions, or at least someone having a close encounter - most likely of the third kind. Realistic films about space exploration have been few and far between, the most memorable of which came in 1995's Academy Award nominated drama, Apollo 13. Since then, space has basically been treated like a hostile villain, portrayed as the setting of chaos and conflict - much as it is in the already highly praised space drama, Gravity. Directed by Alfonso Cuarón (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Great Expectations), Gravity stars Sandra Bullock as Dr. Ryan Stone, an engineer on her first outer space mission. Her commander, Matt Kowalski (George Clooney), is overseeing his last mission as his team orbits the Earth when Mission Control suddenly aborts the mission as satellite debris is quickly confirmed to be on a collision course with the team's location. Unfortunately, the team is unable to defend themselves and the debris massively damages their shuttle and equipment, also thrusting the pair into space. Running low on air and with only limited opinions, Stone and Kowalski are forced to use what means they have left to attempt to make their way to a distant orbiting space station in hopes of using an escape pod to return to Earth. The voices of Ed Harris, Paul Sharma, and Basher Savage also star in supporting roles. For all of this film's achievements (and we'll get to them), Gravity is still far from the perfect film that many make it out to be. At the end of the day, the film's story is the only substantial hang-up. You can sit and marvel at how this film looks, praise the acting, and even embrace the idea of coughing up extra money to see the film in IMAX 3D - but, the end result and the overall impact of the film simply doesn't get the job done. Maybe it's just me (and that's very possible), but this film leaves a gaping void of borderline irrelevance and eventual unimportance. The story doesn't provide a knockout punch that an Academy Award winner should deliver. Gravity goes through a motion of floating from one dire straight to the next, easily making it understandable as to why this film only goes on for only a brief 90 minutes. There are only so many different places you can float to in outer space before the question of whether or not these characters live or die needs to be answered. The climax of this flick is foreseeable, and easily forgettable. We can now move on to the film's outstanding achievements - and there are many. By now, you might have heard that Sandra Bullock wasn't the first choice to play Dr. Ryan Stone. Actually, she wasn't even the second, third, or fourth choice. However, director and co-writer Alfonso Cuarón should be thanking his lucky stars (no pun intended) that he landed this A-list actress. Most actors/actresses will tell you that acting on screen alone, without anyone else in the conversation is a complex, often taxing endeavor. Fortunately for everyone (viewers included), Bullock does a phenomenally job working through her character's various, heart-wrenching emotional states. Her character is full of fear from even the very beginning, but manages to face down each dire scenario, refusing to be fully engulfed by the constant fear of potential doom. While Bullock is the domineering presence in this film, Clooney spends his limited presence portraying a character that's completely opposite in nearly every possible way. He's cool, calm, and collected - even after a debris storm reduces the duo's likelihood of surviving to nearly nothing. Clooney brings to the table everything we've all grown to love about the charismatic gentlemen, full of whit and poise. Combined, the efforts of Bullock and Clooney make for an unstoppable force of chemistry, and by the time the film concludes, it will be incredibly difficult to imagine any other actors or actresses in these two well-written roles. Without a doubt, Gravity is a beautifully visual film, providing a mesmerizing view of Earth from our planet's orbit. In fact, it's so beautiful that it might be hard to get past the fact that it's actually CGI. Sure, the film might be a bit CGI heavy at times, which will be abundantly evident in some portions of the film more than others, but for the most part it provides for an absolutely flawless experience - sparing no expense, I'm sure. The eye-catching realism is quite breathtaking, often so convincing that you'll nearly forget you're watching a movie. During the thrilling action sequences, don't be surprised when you find yourself lost in the moment, easily becoming engulfed in the array of panic that would likely leave most of us screaming in pure horror. In other words, you'll be happy to be in a theater watching the events of this film, rather than in outer space dealing with the unimaginable living-changing experiences capture over the course of this film. Overall, Gravity is going to be all the rage at the box office and understandably so - yet at the end of the day, it's not as epic as the spectacular space drama, Apollo 13. The hype has been built so high for Gravity that not even the Earth's atmosphere could hold it down - but after the film levels off a bit, hopefully viewers will come to terms with the fact that Gravity is simply a forgettable piece of filmmaking. That doesn't mean you should discount the experience of this film (which everyone should witness at least once), but this film is limited by a simple story and visual effects (in all their glory) that some filmmaker will no doubt elapse in the near future. Sandra Bullock (and likely the film's visual achievements) will garner quite a bit of attention during award season, but ultimately there's very little that sets her performance ahead of an unmemorable role that parallels Tom Hanks in Cast Away. In the end, Gravity provides outstanding, yet brief cinematic enjoyment, although I fear this film will eventually crash land in the "good, but forgettable" category of film.

Great film!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I love this film. It's a great story w/ some very impressive visuals. I would recommend watching this on a large screen w/ a good surround sound so you can get a FULL effect! My only gripe is I wish it was filmed in iMAX.

Yes, it's that good
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Most movie lovers can remember seeing a film for the first time that really got their attention. Usually it was in a real movie theater. For me it was "2001: A Space Odyssey." The juxtaposition of a flung femur bone transfiguring into a space shuttle lining up to dock at an orbiting station, all to the backdrop of classical music was mind blowing to this science fiction lover. A few year later, sitting in a large theater I was again mesmerized by a giant space ship moving slowly across dark space. "Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope" had a new technical trick at its disposal. Dolby Surround Sound. A new generation will likely have "Gravity" to look back on. Yes, it's that good. Director Alfonso Cuaron ("Children of Men"), who also wrote the screenplay with his son Jonas, has managed to provide an electrifying thriller with a basic story. A flight crew headed by Lt. (a lieutenant, really?) Matt Kowalski (George Clooney) have been sent to repair the Hubble Telescope. The scientist in charge of the repairs is the ever-so-serious Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock). There are no other actors who have any role of substance other than the voice of Ed Harris at Mission Control early on. In a quick turn of events, it is learned that the Russians have destroyed one of their spy satellites. The explosion has set off a chain reaction of debris hurtling through space taking out other satellites along the way. With only minutes to react, Kowalski's crew attempt to get the shuttle out of orbit. They don't. Now in survival mode, Kowalski and Stone must figure out how to get back to Earth. This becomes even more complicated, as radio communication with Mission Control has been severed. Cuaron provides Sandra Bullock an opportunity to show her acting range and she responds with a performance that will be remembered for a long time. Stone's early panic, as the space debris knocks her away from Kowalski and the shuttle, comes across to the audience. We see the terror in her eyes, in her breathing and in the fogging helmet shield. The other star of the film is Cuaron's cinematographer, Emmanuel Lubezki and the visual and special effects department. It is the most amazing thing I think I've ever seen on screen. And yes, see it now. Don't wait for this movie to come to you by Netflix. And yes, see it in 3D. I pick and choose when to spend an extra $3 or $4 dollars on 3D and I made the right decision here. Gravity has several meanings. The most used and obvious one for this movie has to do with the force of bodies falling toward Earth. But gravity also is defined as a serious or critical nature. Also, serious or dignified behavior. All apply. Cuaron and his team will likely need a truck to load nominations come Oscar time. Don't miss it.

Top notch 3D movie
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Gravity was maybe the best 3D movie I have ever seen in theaters. That 3D experience isn’t as good as the theater, but it translates well enough to the home theater. Only wish it was in 4K!

An Extraordinary Film
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. In a movie that is so tight and crisp and equally moving and eloquent, this is a total feat of film-making. In today's over-long movie-viewing world, Sandra Bullock, George Clooney, and a small body of actors beautifully bring Alfonso Cuaron's masterpiece to life. Critics have belabored certain things about this move - "weak plot," "Bullock is the weakest link," "I've seen better movies in a Planetarium" - but they clearly don't get the story this film is telling or are too jaded to know how heart-breaking and then inspiring this film is. Sandra Bullock is far from the weakest link - she's brilliant - and her re-birth through the course of the film is magic. The range of emotions she demonstrates would be hard to duplicate and you have to applaud her for the subtle nuances of this extraordinary performance. The only tragedy is that this wasn't ranked first on more end-of-year lists (critics are often so wrapped up in PC, message movies that it dilutes their "expert opinions" as a body). And the DVD/BD doesn't disappoint either - highly, highly recommended.

Should have won Best film Oscar
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. You may not like sci-fi movies, but this is an alternate reality we are all close to if you even glanced at a TV when the Challenger disintegrated. Sure, the basic plot line may be trite and hackneyed (intrepid astronauts in trouble, which ones die and do any of them make it home alive?), but Clooney and Bullock pull off character development and drive the story forward at a pace that WILL leave you holding your breath and wondering if everyone watching this movie with you has sucked the oxygen out of the room. The unexpected parts are those that are almost subliminally added in, yet they give depth and understanding of what makes Bullock's character both resigned and fierce in the face of disastrous turns of events that would make another in her shoes just "give up." I'm not sure if I liked Clooney's character's "Aw shucks" personality as little more than his real-life persona, but his acting chops do balance and counterpoint Bullock's early "scientist turned rookie astronaut--darn, what am I doing here?" role into the nuanced (dare I say it) "transformation" into a better person. The ending isn't as sad as Challenger's loss of all aboard, but there's plenty of destruction that set up our actors' tableau, all filmed in such physics-perfect detail, and that 15-minute continuous opening shot, that you really are immersed in the story and fate of our shuttle team. It's even better in 3-D, without the gimmicky3-D effects. Nothing against the Oscar winner, but this was a better film.

Groundbreaking milestone for cinema.
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Alfonso Cuarón’s long-awaited space project landed with a bang in October and immediately became one of the year’s most talked about, best reviewed, and highest grossing films. Simply put, Gravity is a bar-raising milestone for the technical aspect of the medium. The story of a mission specialist (Sandra Bullock) and astronaut (George Clooney) stranded in space after debris crashes into the Hubble Space Telescope, which they were in the middle of working on, is a hair-raising, heart-pounding experience made possible by some never-before-seen special effects and unbelievably inventive camera work, and it amazes in nearly every frame. Cuarón (Children of Men, Y Tú Mamá También) already seemed to have a very firm grasp on his trade, but Gravity takes the auteur director’s career to an exciting new level. Despite being a stirring tale about the resilience of the human spirit, the story isn’t exactly the most revolutionary or intellectually challenging, but what appears on the screen is an obvious leap forward in the possibilities of visual filmmaking. Cuarón has created an unforgettable motion picture experience with Gravity.

Awesome Movie
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The most exciting and tremendous sci-fi adventure in years. This is definitely one of the very best pictures of 2013, hands down without a question. A gorgeous and riveting experience. Director, Alfonso Cuarón crafts an incredible work of art that shows off the the best of it's visual effects and the acting of it's lead star. A visually spectacular and emotionally gripping masterpiece. The special effects are outstanding, it really embraces you with its beauty and the power of its in-depth survival story. A jaw-droppingly mesmerizing and edge of your seat thriller that grabs you from its very first frame to its hopeful and unexpected conclusion. An unforgettable thrill-ride that's sentimental, nerve-racking and utterly stunning. George Clooney and Sandra Bullock are terrific. Clooney is cool, calm and confident and offers heart and humor and wonderful charm to keep Bullocks shaky character at ease. Bullock is a tour de force, she gives an amazing and gripping performance. Bullock gives the best performance of her career. An awesome movie that delivers alot more than you expect.

Beautifully Chilling!!!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Like the title of this review, this movie is beautifully chilling! I saw this in 3D in theaters and I was blown away (so much so that I bought the Blu-ray). The overall attention to detail is fantastic and the sweeping views of earth astounded me. I felt a sense of awe wash over me when those shots of earth came into view because I kind of felt as if I were in space with Dr. Ryan (Sandra Bullock). The visuals are what makes this movie beautiful, but it's the idea of being in space detached from safety that sends a chill down my spine. My gut reaction to the trailer was "Nope!" The idea of drifting into space with nothing to hold onto, nothing to save you, nothing to give you comfort, just freaks me or and makes me nervous. Believe me, during the scenes where Dr.Ryan is drifting off I felt my heart rate go up a few ticks. The action sequences aside, the slower more dramatic scenes tug at your heart and you start feeling for Ryan and her situation. Sandra Bullock brings an amazing performance to this movie because most of what you see is her face. She conveys every expression so well through her face that I'd be surprised if she didn't win some awards for her performance. From someone that likes their movies to be pure entertainment and not some artsy fartsy mind boggle, this movie was fantastic. I enjoyed this film immensely and would certainly recommend this to others.
