I played all the Guitar Hero games up until the main competitor (RB) came out, and I switched over to that and never looked back. That was until I saw some early reviews for GH Live.
I still gravitate to RB, but I have to say, this new GH is very fun. GHTV is actually pretty awesome and addictive, and the new 3x2 guitars are nuanced enough to add a new level of challenge and make the genre feel fresh again. To GH/RB veterans, it feels like playing the game for the first time again when you get to the higher difficulties and start incorporating chords. Get ready to miss lots of notes again until you get the hang of it.
Hardware is solid, and no major issues with gameplay, even though the live band/crowd stuff is really, really cheesy, IMO -- I ignore it as much as I can.
Dinged one star due to microtransactions, even though they are not entirely necessary. Microtransactions do not belong in console games, especially after shelling out $150 for the game and new (mandatory) guitars. In a $1 or free game, fine and this is expected, but a game you purchase for $60+? No way. Also add the live band/crowd to the star deduction. It's pretty terrible.

The Good: Totally radical change from the old standard with this and the Rock Band series. We now have a double row of three frets for a total of six buttons. Sounds easy right? Guess again, some notes are top row, some are bottom and some are both. Result is it makes for a very new and challenging game play. This will turn any previous expert into a beginner in no time. The crowd is real, not animated and reacts realistically to your playing, including throwing things at you and booing loudly. Really immerses you in the game.
The Bad: The guitars use USB dongles for each one so you need to have as many USB ports free on the One in order to play. I had to purchase a 4-1 USB hub for mine as I only had one free port. Song choice is limited, much smaller than RB 4. GTV is really cool but to play what you want, you need to earn coins which as with most games that want you to spend real $$$ takes WAY too long. Disappointing to say the least. Fun though if you don't mind playing what they choose.
All in all, I am enjoying the game but hoping Activision addresses some issues in some future updates.

This is the best guitar inspired video game I have ever played. That being said, I haven't picked up a guitar hero game in quite some time and I had the opinion that the genre was dead. I think I may have been right on some levels, but this game did inspire some new found interest. The best new featured of the game is the guitar itself. The button layout is new and, for someone that actually plays the guitar, it feels more natural. Also, the graphical update was great and they went to great lengths to make you feel like you are on stage with a big crowd. The downside is, when it all comes down to it - it is more of the same and I find it getting old already. So I guess it comes down to how psyched you are to get back into these music genre games.

As the title claims, Guitar Hero is just that, guitars and guitars only. Ok, ok, you can sing, but THERE ARE NO DRUMS! Despite the fact that the drums and bass were great additions to the game a few years ago, the revamping of the guitar controls and the added difficulty that brings make this game fresh and fun. I enjoyed both the "Live" and the TV aspects of the game. They do have a lot of great songs already, but I'm looking forward to the library expanding.

I have to say the overall game play is much the same as the original. The guitar buttons have been changed to mimic a real guitar. The best improvement in my opinion is the live action feel of the game. Your vantage point is on stage with the rest of your band, looking out over the packed audience. The overall feel seems much more realistic. I often just want to see what all the other band members are doing when I am trying to play along.

Guitar Hero is completely revolutionized; made to look like an actual guitar with 6 buttons, 3 per row.
The actual gameplay is challenging, which is good because it means there's a slight learning curve. The guitar itself seems solid, but after about an hour of playing your hand cramps because you're having to constantly move your fingers in a bit of an unnatural position. However, the following is a reflection on Activision and their greedy company: Don't promise us Avenged Sevenfold - and only give us 3 songs live, and take it away after 12 days. When people preordered, they preordered for that promo. That's stupid.
On the plus side, they are still adding more and more songs everyday, so presumably the Avenged Sevenfold issue will be fixed sometime in the future, hopefully.

Great fun, easy at the beginner modes and a challenge for the advanced players. Excellent assortment of different music types and the new Guitar Hero Live mode opens up even more avenues of fun. All around excellent purchase.

Love the game. Both Live and TV modes are great. The new layout of the guitar makes it more fun than the old ones. My only complaint is the amount of older classic songs. The newer stuff is cool, but would like to play the classics. Hopefully there will be some DLC in the future with this. Picked up in store and was in and out in less than 5 minutes. Game took about 10 minutes to install on my XboxOne but no issues so far.

GH Live is a worthy successor to the Guitar Hero series, taking advantage of next-gen console computing power and features.
The new 6 button (3 top, 3 bottom) GH controller does take some getting used to. It feels more how I would imagine playing a real guitar would feel, with the need to move vertically as well as horizontally on the controller.
One negative: multiplayer isn't there in the same sense it was with other games in the series. Campaign mode is single player only. To play together locally, you have to either play the GHTV mode or Quickplay mode, both where you choose songs to play for the heck of it. In either case, the second player's progress is not recorded to their Xbox Live profile; they have to play as Guest.
Also, if you have a lot of Xbox One accessories (like a Turtle Beach headset, external HD, etc.) you will need a powered USB hub for your Xbox One. The X1 only has 3 USB ports, but each of the two guitars needs a port for its wireless receiver.
And finally, you may need a short USB extension cable to bring one of the wireless receivers away from the back of the X1. RF noise is high at the back of the console. if you are very far away from your console, controller drops and disconnects are frequent unless you put the receiver on an extension cable and put it toward the front of the console.

Nice to see this franchise back. Obviously big change on the guitar buttons. Seems ambitious with it's GH Live mode. Biggest gripe about it and it's not a big one but why make the microphone an in store only option and not be able to ship it with the bundle.

This game is a lot of fun to play with friends. New songs are constantly being added and the guitar hero tv mode is a good way to lose hours playing. The new guitar shakes things up. Makes the game more challenging in a good way.

The new guitar design it felt like I was playing Guitar Hero 1 all over again. The learning curve and not hitting the correct notes at first is kind of frustrating. But over time the game is fun once you learn how to play it.

This game is great! you honestly feel like you're playing a real rock concert. The crowd boos or cheers based on your performance, but instead of being animated like the old games, there are crowds of REAL people! Also, your band members make cheesy faces at you based on your performance, they're very cliche and exaggerated, but the game is still awesome. The only issue I had with it is that one of my two guitars squeaks when I strum, and I haven't been successful at pair both controllers at the same time (which is kind of why I bought this pack). I've tried multiple USB ports, new batteries, pressing the pairing buttons, and no luck. Overall, I love this game, and even though there's a learning curve, it's awesome and worth every penny!

I did not do enough research on this version of GH. I was not impressed with the need to have a USB PER guitar. I have USB's being used for my external harddrive and my headset. I had to install the game on the internal and unplug the HD to play. Also when you sign in a guest they cannot track their progress. It's you and a guest - not another XBL user. So same room co op isn't that fun anymore. Lastly the new button layout was a bit different. My GF did not like it. I could have gotten used to it. My brother in law loves it. To each their own. We ultimately returned it for Rock Band 4.

At first I wasn't sure about the new guitar layout, but I've warmed up to it and it may be even more satisfying than the old inline button layout. The story mode is like any other guitar hero except they went with a live not animated audience. If you're watching someone play I guess it could be cool but you don't really notice the different while playing since your looking at the notes and not what's going on in the background. What keeps this game at 4 stars especially the 2 guitar bundle is that you can only play under one profile on 2 player mode. Which means played two is stuck in eternal guest mode. Their points don't count, they never unlock achievements or upgrades, this is a huge oversight in my eyes.

I admit, I was hesitant about how well this would work out give the deviation from the original controller layout. I am pleased to say I am loving this new controller and the game in general. There are plenty of metal songs on it to keep me interested in the GHTV section of the game. Expert is rather difficult and idk that I will ever be able to master that lol. But in GHTV you need to use plays to play songs on demand which require gold coins to purchase. This is not crippling as you can also play free channels with revolving videos etc and you earn gold coins for each performance. Also an awesome aspect of GHTV to me is the fact its not animations, but rather they use the music videos for the songs. That is awesome to me. Anyway I think this is a very good evolution for Guitar Hero. I recommend it! A side note though is that it was some kind of a hassle getting the controller to sync with the console because it doesn't connect like the wireless controllers it.connects with a wifi USB adapter, which I have to use on the back of my console. Was a little irritating at first.

Awesome game! Was waiting for another one of these to come out since the original. I have searched for the older game because my girlfriend is obsessed with Guitar Hero but it was nowhere to be found. So glad they remade the series. Super fun, a little difficult on regular depending on the song but great game.

The game is a little bit different from the original guitar hero games, however, once you get used to the new button layout (which takes about an hour of playing) it is very enjoyable making it feel more like a real guitar. The setlist is acceptional and the guitar hero tv game mode is a lot of fun as well.

Was very excited for the new GH to come out, considering I love rhythm games such as Guitar Hero and Rock Band. Sadly, this game did not live up to my expectations. Game has poor calibration settings, laggy backgrounds and gameplay, and instruments are not durable (guitar broke about 5 hours after usage; returned and got replacement). Also, difficulty settings are kind of ridiculous (5 settings). The first 3 are almost a joke, as they are super easy. The 4th (advanced) is mildly difficult at first, but grows to be very simple, making you feel as if you should be on the hardest difficulty. The last difficulty level (expert) is so much more difficult, to the point it is nearly unplayable due to: poorly made instrument (strumbar) as well as game lag, poor calibration, and background glitches. This makes the game not quite as fun because there is no median between boringly easy and overbearingly difficult. There are some positives though, the setlist for the game is more consistent that usual and also offers more variety of music genres. Also, GHTV is interesting as it offers music videos in the background to the songs, although it is slightly laggy. GHTV also cycles through new music to be added into the game, which is nice. Overall, I do not think this game lived up to the GH and rhythm game hype.

Guitar Hero Live has been providing our family and friends fun & competitive entertainment since we purchased it. With 6 buttons instead of the original 3, it really gives off the feeling of playing a real guitar and creates a much more challenging game than the original Guitar Hero.
