Open world and RPG elements of the Witcher 3. Action and combat of Tomb Raider. Graphics eclipsing Uncharted 4. A great story with dozens and dozens of hours of gameplay to boot. This is truly an impressive game, especially when you consider that it's the first of its kind for the developer. When I'm not playing this game, I'm thinking about playing this game. I'm not typically someone who enjoys questing and I generally prefer a good linear game to open world. This game, however, has made me reevaluate my preconceived notions about this genre. These games can be fun and exciting and beautiful and awe inspiring. This is my favorite game so far this gen.

    Game of the Year

I can't believe I never reviewed this game after I played it. Horizon Zero Dawn is easily the game of the year for 2017. I loved every aspect of it The story itself is enough to play this game. It's original and captivating. The controls are some of the best in any game I've played and the combat is second to none. Enemies can be taken down in multiple ways, which makes this game great for all play styles (I'm a hack and slasher myself, but this game made me want to actually try and use stealth). Do not be put off by the fact that it is open world. The world is large and dense with a good number questions. However, the quests are far shorter than those in the Witcher 3 and each adds to the story as you go. Do not sleep on this game!

this game is a masterpiece from the voice actors, the cinematics, the production value, camera, the story, its message and theme, ease of controls which is a dealbreaker, in-game character choices, 4k nature scences and attention to detail. My friend bought this first, invited me to play it, feel in love with the cinematic and nature scene and I was hooked for 3 days until I bought my own game system (my first since 2001 computer emulators think pokemon yellow and digimon), 4k tv TCL55P605 and fiberglass tv stand just so I can play this at home. I finally had time this week to complete the game, and all I can say is wow. The gameplay is open world, game controls are easy ( a must! i dont want to spend time learning how to climb a mountain with difficult controls, only to fall and restart from the beginning,. There are many saved locations in this game which is beginner friendly, and the game is very forgiving if you die and forgot to save but need to restart at the last mission. Lastly, the game is story-focused and is all about character development which is important to the player realism, not just senseless hack and stash. Also, I feel in love with the realistic nature scene, the themes of self-discovery and choosing to do good in our own world amid chaos everywhere. There's some in-game moral decision that you must decide during the plot. I havent played any games since StarCraft Brood War and Diablo II, so its nice to see this game and likes of Uncharted and The Last of Us have progressed the 4k story telling genre. You will love it.

I picked this game up, and due to many pre-release reviews was a little concerned. The pre-release reviews all gave the game high scores, but also talked about how much of a feminist icon Aloy may be considered in the future, and how the game was a huge win for feminists. On the flip side I saw some negative reviews that indicated that every male character in the game was written horribly, and this game was a "feminist hit piece." I saw none of that. Aloy is a strongly written character, but there is nothing "feminist" about her. Likewise, there were strongly written male characters in the game. There was no political agenda present in the game at all! The graphics are amazing, the gameplay is top notch, and the controls are tight. Most of all though, the story was extremely well written. The game was long enough to make me realize that I spent my money well, and there was a ton of extra content and side quests to spend even more time on the game if I wished without feeling like it was meaningless. If possible, play the game on a Playstation 4 Pro, because this title is an absolute graphical marvel to behold in 4k. Highly recommended!

I'll be honest, I had low expectations for this game. The premise was cool, but so absurd in my mind, I thought it would ruin immersion. Boy was I wrong! The story does a great job of easing the player into the game, providing just enough context that you don't feel lost. As the story progressed, I had multiple "oh, that actually makes sense!" moments. As good as the story was though, it's repeatability comes from the combat. It's very fluid. There are many ways to achieve victory (and many ways to fail!). No matter how small an enemy was, I found myself being very tactful in every situation. It's also a gorgeous game. There were times when I would just stop playing to admire the beauty of it. I play on a standard PS4 and kind of expected the game to be more optimized for the PS4 pro and lack for the previous. That was not the case. I was impressed. My singular complaint is that I would have liked to be able to interact more with the environment. There are plants you can harvest, grass you can hide in, and mountains you can climb but that's about it. Regardless of this, it is a wonderful game that I highly recommend.

This game is amazing. Definitely start it on Very Hard difficulty for full experience. Once you hit the open world in the story, the game takes its stride. Hunting is exhilarating and fun, the story is compelling and the visuals are stunning. It looks great on a vanilla non-pro PS4. I spent a good chunk of time in photo mode taking screenshots. Took me about 40ish hours to Platinum this game on Very Hard. As far as replayability once you beat the game it takes you back to a certain point in the story with all your upgrades so you could explore the map and finish missed quests or collect more items. Not much else in that department. But we'll see with the DLC if it comes.

This game keeps me entertained for hours. It’s challengginh but not too hard. The concept for the story is also very interesting. Once you get through he first part of the game it is mainly open world and you can choose which parts of the story you want to pursue and when

This has to be one of the best Action Adventure/RPG games on the PS4. It takes a little while to get used to the controls and combat functions but once that happens you will really enjoy the game. There are no guns to speak of except later in the game but it's mostly a bow & arrow and spear which are upgraded as the game progresses in addition to various traps. More powerful weapons are a must since some of the beasts are tough to take down in addition to human enemies. The game is similar to Far Cry Primal as to the basic mechanics and adventure portion but the difference is that you hunt down mechanical beasts instead of prehistoric animals. The graphics and sound are top-notch with smooth-as-butter controls and gameplay. The game is lengthy and can take about 40 hours to get most of the tasks and errands completed before getting to the final boss battle. It's a game that should be part of any PS4 library.

The game is very fun to play. Lots of side activities to do like collecting things. Many side missions and different weapons. Difficulty can be changed if a very young kid wants to play. Compelling story and graphics are amazing on 4K. Very well thought out game.

So I bought the game a little over a month ago. Haven't had time to install it until today. I sat down to play it and... "the disc cannot be read". Checked the disc, which seems fine and installation went smooth. I read up on problems people had and uninstalled and reinstalled the game. Nothing... I think $10 was too much to spend on a coaster.

Horizon Zero Dawn is a fantastic game. It's open world is so expansive that you could walk around and be in awe simply by how it looks. The gameplay is even better, the animations that the machines have in combat just make sense. There are no glitchy movements that make it seem unrealistic and the movement of your own character (Alloy) mimics the free running seen in Assasins Creed and overall the game flows very well! In conclusion I would absolutely recommend this game if you're a fan of exploring an open world with plenty of quests and a compelling story!

This game has been a real blast. I have been playing every night since release and I m only at 18% completion. Huge open world game with great story, great combat, a lot of options on how to proceed with missions. Main missions with a plethora of side missions to do. Great visuals. Controls are easy to get used to. I highly recommend this game to fans of Tomb Raider, Far Cry Primal, Shadow of Mordor. If you like those you will love this one.

As a fan of story-driven adventure's with RPG elements, Horizon Zero Dawn is satisfying. I'm only about 15% into the game, but I'm definitely enjoying it so far. -- THE GOOD • The story is interesting enough to make me want to pursue the main quests, and the different methods of uncovering pieces of the story (dialogue, visuals, text, etc.) are varied enough that I feel compelled to explore everywhere to figure out what happened. • The visuals of this game are incredible--even the world map is so utterly gorgeous that I want to hang it on my wall. The character renderings are beautiful (and sometimes odd), but it's the natural scenery that takes the cake visually. The lighting, the flora and fauna, the use of landscape features, and the weather elements create a distinct sense of place and atmosphere that I find pretty immersive. • The dialogue has been compelling, and I've appreciated both watching Aloy respond to characters on her own, and choosing Aloy's responses myself--the element of choice and lack thereof feels balanced. Aloy both feels like her own person, and a person I am involved in, and I appreciate it--watching Aloy make her own decisions influences how I play her and the dialogue options I choose because I am able to get a good idea of what I *think* Aloy might do in any given situation, not just what I--Player--would do. In addition, I appreciate the dialogue options that develop Aloy's character as an interesting tool for the plot (you're sometimes prompted to choose an Aggressive, Clever, or Compassionate response to a situation). • The combat is exciting, fun, and satisfying. There's a large focus on ranged combat, so far, which is refreshing to what I expected, but I've found that the melee combat is still effective and fun, when you use it. The game wants players to learn about the machines and their weaknesses, but I've found so far that I don't really need to--I can get a high vantage point and just shoot an enemy until it dies (since ammo crafting components are EVERYWHERE), or I can use my (relatively overpowered?) spear to take down my enemies quickly. Combine this with stealth-kill perks that you can obtain pretty quickly and an abundance of healing materials, and I haven't died once yet. Regardless, the combat is still fun, even if I haven't found it challenging yet. (There's also different difficulty modes, so I think this can also be changed if you prefer a real challenge.) THE NOT SO GOOD • The controls are occasionally frustrating, and I think could have stood for some improvement (touchy, puzzling at time as to why you can do something but not another thing, un-precise in ways I expected them to be precise), but so far they have not detracted much from my overall experience and enjoyment of the game. The most frustrating, by far, is the jumping/climbing mechanic. There is so much in the world that looks climbable and would be LITERALLY climbable in reality, but Aloy is inexplicably unable to climb or traverse these areas. This has been extremely disappointing to me because it makes the world feel less open and more like these structures are just furniture, meant to add visual appeal to the landscape but ultimately meant to be passed by as the roads funnel me to my next quest marker. If there were more opportunities for creative climbing, I think the world would feel more truly open and that players would more greatly enjoy exploring a visually beautiful area that may not have much to offer in the ways of loot, enemies, or story-details. • So far, the world feels a little sparse. There are ruins of the old world everywhere, but I've found them generally lacking in things to discover, do, or explore when they're not marked as a specific ruin that you'll need to go to. Since I'm only in the beginning, this might change, but I've found it disappointing. -- Overall, I am a fairly forgiving player. I am willing to overlook the shortcomings I've found in the game's mechanics and such because I am interested in finding out more about the world, the story, and the characters. I'm interested to see where it goes!

One of the best open world RPGs ever made. What makes this game special is two basic concepts. First, it's one of the few open world RPGs to have combat equal to the story/exploration elements. Second, it eliminates just about every annoying aspect of other large-scale RPGs. Lastly, it's nothing short of amazing how well this game looks on a PS4 from a purely graphical perspective. (For context I mostly game on PC). I got HZD for $20 on Black Friday, but at any price this game is worth it. Buy it, you won't regret it.

I'm a seasoned gamer and have played many types of games throughout my existence. This is the game I have been waiting for since basically Skyrim. The beauty of the graphics, lighting, sun flares, motions, combat, weapons, everything... Just amazing. I say it's a cross between Skyrim and Far Cry. HUGE open world exploration. Great upgrade system and control scheme. Voice acting is top notch as well. Beautiful graphics is worth mentioning twice (even on a standard PS4.) I can't even imagine on the Pro! The only thing that initially bothered me was the idea of fighting machines that were modeled after real world animals (Horses, etc.) After realizing the story and when/why/how this takes place, all of that was easily put to rest. Killing some of these machines (especially the larger ones) is definitely satisfying, as the difficulty is just right. A challenge. You can definitely get yourself into some rough situations if you try progressing too soon before leveling up. Guerrilla Games definitely hit a home run here and I wouldn't be surprised at all if this is in contention for (and wins) GOTY. All the hype was actually true this time. What are you waiting for???
