    Very Good

Have you ever felt like a disappointment to everyone you know? Someone your parents and peers think of as an anchor dragging the rest of them down or as a mere inconvenience? How do you get past that? Berk is a small, Viking village located near the Arctic Circle. At least, that’s an assumption I made based on the main character’s statement that “it snows nine months of the year and hails the other three”. That main character, Hiccup (voiced by Jay Baruchel) is the only son of the village chief, Stoick the Vast (voiced by Gerard Butler). The village is under near-constant siege by outside forces. Those outside forces being dragons. Hiccup (Baruchel) is short, slim, and in no way strong. The one trade all villagers learn in their lifetime is the art of hunting and killing dragons. Gobber (Hiccup’s employer and the proprietor of the village armory, voiced by Craig Ferguson) suggests that Hiccup stop all of “this” while gesturing to all of him. Gobber (Ferguson) is a man who has lost several limbs over the years, all during encounters with dragons. Hiccup, being seriously lacking in physical strength, designs and constructs a machine to propel the weapons that the other villagers simply throw by hand. Of course, during a trial run in front of Gobber, the machine strikes a villager. Hiccup takes that same apparatus to a mountaintop, fires on one of the few species of dragon that’s never been captured or seen and, miraculously, causes that dragon to fall to earth. Overjoyed by this victory, Hiccup shouts in triumph but is soon set upon by a species of dragon that can breathe fire and produce fire throughout its entire body. He’s rescued by his father who expresses disappointment in his son and disbelief in Hiccup’s claim to have landed a blow against a Night Fury. He treks through the woods the next day, determined to find proof of his accomplishment, but finds something far more significant. Now, unlike a lot of “adults” I maintain my affection for “children’s” movies. This is not to say that I like all, or even most, children’s movies. For example, Despicable Me, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, and Eight Crazy Nights disappointed me to a degree that I cannot express in words. But, in spite of its flaws or maybe because of them, I loved How to Train Your Dragon. Casting Baruchel as Hiccup was genius. Hiccup’s peers, voiced by Kristen Wiig, Jonah Hill, America Ferrara and others, fit the roles they’re given perfectly. If you have children who haven’t seen this movie, you should take steps to remedy that. If you don’t have children but can enjoy movies that are produced for them, like I do, check it out.

    Great 3D movie

Since this is in the 3D section for bluray, I'll focus on that instead of the actual graphics, audio, or the plot. The 3D effects on this movie are amazing. When speaking of the 3D effects, I am speaking more of the 'depth' effect than the 'pop-out' effect. This movie does an amazing job of adding depth throughout, really drawing the viewer into the movie. When people speak of 3D and mentioning 'it is like looking out a window', that is what this movie portrays. The movie does an excellent job of making you feel as if you are actually there. As far as the pop-out effects, this movie has a couple of decent pop-out effects, but nothing too incredibly noteworthy that I can remember. As far as 3D movies go, whether it be live action or animation, this one is incredibly impressive. It is a great addition to any 3D library.

    Favorite Animated Movie

I really like "How to Train Your Dragon". It is funny, has plenty of action, a light (non-interfering) love story, some character growth and development, and of course dragons. The animation is great, even better in 3D, and I personally really enjoyed the sound track. Haven't met a person that doesn't like this movie on some level. I would say a must see for anyone who enjoys animated films, and give it a try if you are not always sure about animated films (this will probably be one that you like). I can say this is my current favorite animated film.

this is actually a darn good movie experience. Aimed at kids there's a lot of sappy moments that actually put a smile on my face. And comes with a digital copy.

    Great for kids and adults

Took my daughter to see this in the theater and was surprised how great it was. I could not wait to pick this up for her as a Christmas present. Kids and adults both can sit down and enjoy this movie. It has a great story and teaches kids not to judge others so it has a great moral behind it as well. It has great characters in it and is a great visual movie. It also has some humor in it as well which is nice for the adults. It is very entertaining from start to finish and a great buy. I know in my house it will get watched over and over again. Have not opened it up yet as it is a Christmas present so as to what if any special features are on it I cannot say.

Highly recommended 3D movie for kids and adults!

How to Train Your Dragon is an original, funny, heartwarming, action-packed movie that my 7-year-old loves, my wife loves, and I love. It's one that is still fun to watch even after repeated viewings. The 3D is well-done, drawing you into Hiccup's world and making everything feel closer and more "real" even though it is animated. I recommend this movie for maybe five years and up since there are several pretty intense fire-breathing dragon sequences. Can't wait for a sequel!

    Definitely better than I thought

I had very very low expectations for this movie. It completely blew me out of the water. Good plot, excellent animation, even the main character, who I didn't like at first, grew on me. We kept the digital copy, and my son and I have watched it a few times. Very cute, and humorous. Final review, it's rewatchable, without hurting the ears, *cough* FROZEN *cough* which is all you can ask for, when it comes to kids movies.

    I'll keep this simple.

This movie in 3D is what made me justify owning a 3D TV. If you have a 3D TV, this must be in your Blu Ray collection. The only nitpick is lack of extras. I may buy the regular 2-disc Blu Ray version in addition to rectify that.

Has 2D as Well - Good Movie

Just an FYI the 3D disc also has the 2D version available. The movie is enjoyable. The picture quality 3D and 2D is crisp clean with excellent sound quality as well. I was presently surprised to find the 3D disc had a 2D option when I loaded it and thought this was important to mention. I would recommend this title.

Since I had this movie on DVD, I had to re-buy it on blu-ray. When I saw this movie when it came out in theaters it instantly became a classic with me. I loved the story, the animation and the characters (most specifically Toothless)! People of all ages should have and watch this movie!

    Loved it, original plot line

I was actually really surprised by this movie and my whole family enjoyed it. With so many plot lines re-hashed by Hollywood, it was nice to see something more original, but also funny and heartwarming. Has a little something for everyone in terms of action, romance, etc.

My 3 year old son loves this movie so much that he watches it over and over. For some movies I get tired of seeing or hearing them in the car, but this one is great. I love the graphics and Toothless is a blast. I'd highly recommend getting this movie, but especially if you have young kids.

The whole family liked this movie so I figured it could only be better in 3D. This is my first 3D movie so I don't know how it compares to others, but I think it was definitely worth paying the extra cost for this version.

Sure it's a typical movie about the outcast kid who defies tradition, but it's just done so well that you can't help but enjoy it. The animation is great, the character designs are all unique-especially the dragons, and the flying scenes are really well done.

Great story with physically awkward kid who is also the chief’s son try’s to fit in. On his quest he discovers a love for dragons that doesn’t involve killing them. He just has to convince everyone else the same.

Great movie I liked watching this in regular 2D but the 3D makes it so much better, one thing I did find, is that the picture seemed quite a bit darker watching the 3d version, something that I haven't noticed with any other 3D movies yet.

My boyfriend had to have this movie because he loves it so much and he's 21. I also watched it with my neice, nephew, and mom and we all enjoyed it. It had a little bit of everything for everyone. Magic, love, etc. Would recommend for a family night.

This is a terrific movie to show off your 3D equipment with. I would have preferred an aspect ration to fill the screen, but once the movie gets going, I suppose I didn't really give it much more thought. Highly recommended.
