Customers commend the 14" Laptop for its affordability, light weight, and fast performance. It is considered a great value for the price. While some users wish for a larger screen and backlit keyboard, the limited storage capacity at 128GB is seen as the only major downside.

The 4 gig memory is good for multiple window use. And the 128 gig for storage is also good for documents, photos, videos and music. The solid state drive (ssd) is great for quiet operation and fast start up. If you need additional storage just get an external micro sd card and use a low profile memory card adapter. Just pop it in an leave it there unlike a regular sd card or regular micro sd adapter, whis stick out like a sore thumb!

Out of the box this thing is pretty fast even though there’s only a pentium gold processor. That’s faster than a intel celeron processor though. The SSD is great also. However, in the month I’ve had it I’ve made some serious upgrades to it on my own. It now has two Samsung Evo 860 500Gb SSD, 16gb RAM, and an Intel wireless AC WLAN card. Paid $200 for it during a Labor Day sale and now it’s easily a $600 laptop. Would highly recommend this PC as it’s highly upgradable.

I got this laptop on Jan, 4 2020, I saw my friend get this laptop, and I liked the laptop and the design. I’ve been using it for over a year and it’s pretty good. The only problem was that after using the touchpad for over a year it sort of broke ( the left side of the touchpad). But its still usable so yes I would recommend it to someone who needs a laptop on a budget.

The Best $199 I've ever spent on a computer!

First of all, to answer some of the questions and misinformation about this computer, the processor in this computer is almost the same performance as the 5th Gen Core i5 mobile processors. So if anyone says the Intel Gold 4417U CPU is slow, they're wrong. It's VERY capable and power efficient!
Secondly, the computer comes installed with one 4GB ram module. I opened mine to replace it with an 8GB module but noticed there are TWO RAM SLOTS. I also wondered if I could actually install and use more than the 8GB max that the spec sheet specifies. So, I left the 4GB samsung DDR4-2666 Module installed (which is surprisingly good memory) and I installed the additional 8GB Patriot Viper DDR4-2666 module in the second slot. Well, it worked JUST FINE. I am running 12GB ram and windows displays and confirms 12GB DDR4 2400 (max speed cpu supports) installed. I was astonished and very pleseantly surprised that this $199 laptop is running performance class RAM and has accepted 12GB of it, so far. (I might try to replace the 4GB module with another 8GB for 16gb, but 12gb should be MORE than enough.)
Third, this laptop has USB 3.1 and USB type-C which is practically unheard of in this price point, and even price points a couple hundred dollars higher.
Fourth, the SSD in this laptop interface is M.2 SSD and it's Samsung brand. I was also highly surprised to find an M.2 SSD in this $199 laptop and not SATA or something less expensive. Another very pleasant surprise and leaves LOTS of room for upgrade potential!
Also, the wifi adapter is m.2 pci-e 802.11n BUT is easily upgradable to newer tech (802.11ac and beyond) very inexpensively should that need come in the future, as it's not integrated into the motherboard.
Also, the display on this laptop may not be 1080p resolution, but it's sharp and vivid and bright and leaves nothing to be desired. If you don't believe me, go look at one for yourself on display at your local best buy. It's a FAR BETTER IPS display than is usually offered in super cheap price points like this!
Bottom line, adding a $40 8GB memory module to this laptop, and you have a VERY DECENT and capable portable machine that can do essentially anything you need to do apart from high-end gaming, obviously. In all honesty, people pay $400-$500 and more for the EXACT SAME performance that this laptop will bring you for just $199... and I'm not just saying that. It's REALLY NICE!

Bought this during the labor day sale at $199, and this is simply the best low cost laptop I have ever bought. Everything is good - speed, display, keyboard, trackpad are all amazing at this price.
Pros:
- expandability: The base system fast, but can easily be expanded. I'm running 12GB ram in the two slots, and upgraded the ssd from 128GB m.2 sata to 1TB m.2 nvme. Now it's pretty awesome.
- There is a full service manual, and disassembly needs only a phillips #0.
- ports: it has a built in ethernet port! I can do everything I need without dongles.
- I'm dual booting Win10 and Fedora 30, and it runs both perfectly. (I did have to add the linux driver for the wifi rtl8721de card, but that was easy.)
- great battery life (I get 8hr+ in real life).
Cons:
- no keyboard backlight
- no touchscreen
(These don't matter to me, but could be deal breakers for some.)
Overall - I really like this laptop, and at this price it's a steal.

excellent laptop for linux

installed ubuntu without a hitch, never booted this machine into windows.
this hp machine is an excellent, fast linux box. this is the pentium gold version, which is much cooler and needs no cooling fan.
if you have not used a modern linux you can try linux with a machine like this at low risk. linux is much faster than windows, better maintained than windows, has far and away better internet security than windows, and updates take minutes to complete rather than the hours windows takes.
first timer? it can be helpful to have a linux friend help with your first install.
1) bios is ok as-is on this machine.
2) your first account will be the admin account. later, after the install, you create the user accounts.
3) in version 19 the wifi driver is automatically installed, but in version 18.04 the realtek 8723 wifi needs an additional driver download, search 'd723' at ubuntu.com and follow the instructions you issue in the 'terminal'.

I was looking for a computer for my kids to start off this school year. This is the perfect laptop for them. Since this is a basic needs laptop I thought it would be a bit sluggish and quality would take a hit. I can tell you this laptop is excellent to say the least. I was blown away at how it performs for $200. From pressing the power button to actually working is a mere blink of an eye. Plus it comes with Microsoft office. Screen quality is excellent and text is sharp and clear. Would highly recommend this as a school laptop. The only major downside I see is storage at 128GB. However if you are using this laptop for school purposes only, you should have no problems with the storage. I wanted to buy a second one, but the best buy sale is over.

I've been a computer user since 1970, beginning with the IBM 1130 and DEC PDP-8/S.
I like to travel light, computer-wise, being that I usually also take a dSLR camera on trips.
I often traveled with a Celeron N4000, 64G eMMC/4G - based 11" machine by another company. This HP machine is a significant upgrade to that, while not too much bigger or heavier (I don't see the need to have a dozen+ tabs open, don't handle gigabyte-sized documents or spreadsheets, and stream multiple videos making a cacophony at best.)
This HP is simple, has plain but decent lines and build, comfy keyboard and trackpad with buttons, and is plenty fast with its essentially "Core-i3-without-turbo-boost" Pentium Gold CPU. It runs Office, Opera browser, YouTube and even the free Nikon Capture NX-D image processing software just fine. And it's faster than many expensive laptops that are a few years old.
4GB RAM is fine for my needs by if I feel the urge will upgrade to 8 with another 4GB module, which will then allow the machine to run in dual-channel mode. Likewise, 128 GB SSD is plenty since I don't store videos, and can upgrade the SSD if I desire, too.
The 3-cell battery (as opposed to 2-cell) is a bonus, not to mention that I paid $239 last week and just got the price match to today's $199. That's a real bargain.
I should mention I spent many hours with Hewlett Packard computers -- starting in 1970, with a teletype model ASR33, via my school district's HP-2000C time-sharing system!

Bought it for my wife opened it up, pow, its has a extra dim slot throw an 8gb in that $30 done. Wait an empty 2.5 drive slot let buy the ribbon for that and a 1tb ssd $115. Add bonus type c connector, HDMI output and 2 more usb connections on a 200 lap. This thing is a crazy stupid value if your willing to open its guts and place a little extra work in it. Also Im attaching an image of its cover off so people have an idea of what your getting into

For those seeking to keep their entire lives on-line (aka in your PC) this machine isn't hefty enough for you. As a machine to handle all your communications, your budget and office type programs and whatever other things any "grown-up" needs, this is a good machine. I've been through several laptops in the last 30 years. I've learned that it is better to have a massive plug in hard drive that you can a) back up to and b) take along to your next machine when you upgrade for speed and/or power.. Most machines have some glitches. So far, this HP has been a solid worker.
My only gripe has little to do with the machine. Window 10 is going to make me kill someone one of these days. Every time MS gets a workable windows program, they screw around with it.

I had been eyeing this laptop when it went on sale for $199, so I went ahead and bought it. I was looking for a laptop for school that was not too expensive but still decent enough to handle some casual games. So far it’s been great. Performance is fast, and I’ve had no issues having multiple applications open at once. It also runs Stardew Valley with no issues.
Some minor issues: this laptop comes in Windows 10 S Mode. This can be turned off and I immediately did so so I could download applications. This laptop doesn’t connect to 5G WiFi. It’s a smaller laptop as well, smaller than I usually get but it works fine for my needs. None of these issues were a problem for me personally.
If you can get it on sale, this laptop is definitely worth it.

Purchased mainly to leave in my home office for email, word processing and web-surfing. It's fine for those functions. You wouldn't want to do gaming or much streaming video on this, but at this price point you shouldn't expect that. Display is a little washed-out, but again, this is not a laptop to buy for graphics. Keyboard response is a little stiff, and having no space between the backspace and home buttons makes it easy to hit the wrong one, but overall it's very usable for basic work and web functions and cheaper than many Chromebooks and almost all serious tablets. It was purchased to leave in one place, so no clue about battery life, etc.

Love this little laptop!

So, firstly, this is NOT a gaming machine! I hope that the people considering this laptop is understanding that fact. It cannot compare to high-end laptops and should not be compared to the laptops that boast Nvidia graphic cards. I knew what I was looking for in a small laptop and this is the perfect match for my needs. I already have an Asus ROG 17inch laptop that is over the top, but lugging this beast around college was really frustrating! It weighs around 7.5 pounds and the power brick probably is 2 lbs itself! I kept thinking that if I could just find something that would read emails, load Office apps (Word, Outlook, and Excel) and log into library ebooks, then I was going to get something else soon. Well, I found this on sale and never looked back! My Asus ROG will stay home and be used for games and music, whereas this little laptop will be with me for college. So, I clean installed Windows 10 pro and updated all drivers, and it is the best little purchase I have made this year. It is actually my "go-to" computer for everything, whether looking for recipes during dinner to watching YouTube videos while eating lunch. I streamed Netflix for 3 hours while having it on my lap and it never really felt hot, maybe lukewarm, but not hot. I would never, ever try that with my Asus! The heat coming out of that beast will roast your skin after 20 minutes. Again, this HP 14inch laptop can do everything that I need it to do. It is a small SSD of 128 GB but i still have 95 GB left after installing Win10 pro and Office Pro 2016. I do not plan to store music or pictures on it, so I do not think that i will have to upgrade the HDD. But it might not be enough if you are putting music and photos on there. I do think upgrading the RAM will be necessary, cause it is only 4 GB right now. So, I will looking into placing another 8gb in there to make it 12 GB DDR4. I read that someone was able to do that and it worked fine.
If you are purchasing a second laptop for business or coursework at college, this is the best choice. The laptop is so quiet, and it barely is heard, even when running multiple browsers and Word. The screen is not 1080p, but I knew that and honestly, the screen is nice, with sharp details and vivid color. I am not watching 4K movies on this thing, so screen is not a huge factor. To add Windows 10 pro or home edition, you have to tweak the BIOS setting and place it in Legacy mode. It took a little time to understand how to boot to USB.

My child uses this for learning and school activities he can do at home. Its a little on the slow side at times but for the price and what it's being used for it cant be beat. I was worried the screen quality would be poor but its actually pretty good, there is a little bit of a color shift but I've seen way worse. Keyboard is good and touchpad has a good response. Battery life isn't too horrible either.

I had returned the item after about seven days. I liked it but it wasn't what I had expected it to be like. It was much faster then my very old Toshiba laptop. While online it was super fast and everything I opened was super fast. The only reason I returned it was because I had a hard time with a smaller screen since my old screen is much bigger and I had a problem with a game that I like to play and it just wasn't fast enough for that game. I would of kept it if I wasn't into my game so much. Some games did work though like windows games. This laptop is good for surfing the web and small things.

This laptop is an excellent value. The Pentium Gold chipset combined with the SSD is a great combination. I like this chip better than the similar level AMD chip as it seems to put out less heat and less fan noise than the AMD counterpart. HP has a nice keyboard and case with this laptop, making it feel great to put in a back pack and work remotely. The touchpad is great and buttons have the right pressure feel to get them to click. I've had other laptops that are too soft or too hard to get a button click. Ethernet port is a bonus.

Good Value with One Issue

I'll second what others have written about this being a excellent value for the price. The one issue is that the "click" function on the actual touch pad itself is very sensitive even at the lowest sensitivity setting. What I mean is that the slightest contact when I put my fingers on the pad registered as a click, often one I did not want. I was starting to worry about where I left the cursor when I took my fingers of the pad in case it was over something I did not want to click.
The solution, that I'm comfortable with given the overall value, is to disable the click function on the touch pad. This means you have to use the buttons below the pad to click. I got used to that fairly quickly.
I went to the store and tried the display version of this unit and it behaved in the same way, as did ALL the budget units on display, and the instore support guy confirmed that my unit was behaving normally.
This seems to be a "feature" of most low cost units.

Took it home, cleaned it up, got out of S Mode & haven't looked back. I use this more than I use my 1 month old Macbook Pro. No need for Geek Squad or HP extended warranties, but YMMV. Good speed, adequate SSD space & all for 215.00 out the door! This is a steal!

Pros: excellent boot speed thanks to the SSD. Affordable enough that you can start off your kids on it. Light and portable enough for light on-the-go use. Battery life is decently good. Built in camera, speakers, and microphone means you can use it for skype / VOIP phone calls.
Cons: SMALL SSD, but you can always upgrade that later. Screen isn't that good and the resolution is not very good, so you would need a second / supplemental monitor to really get a good image / resolution. 4 GB of RAM is skimpy, but this too could be upgraded.
Overall this is a good laptop for a budget, but forget any serious gaming or any kind of video or audio editing. Given the price, it's a very solid entry-level, no-frills machine if all you need is the basics,
