I never expected to enjoy this game so much, not really a fan if the “dynasty warriors” genre. But THIS? Bruh. Storyline is immersive, the side quest and progression system just pulls you right into it. The combat though, is honestly the best part..every character is VASTLY different and that alone opens the game up to so many playstyles and preferences. BUY IT!

The game has fantastic action, gorgeous visuals (we’ll comeback to this one later) and, amazing story telling going through the events that lead to Zelda BOTW. It also exposes the limitations of the Switch. The action on screen sometimes makes the FPS dip below the 20s.

Meh BotW prequel, great Warriors game

I've never been big into the Warriors games. Honestly, I never really knew about them until the original Hyrule Warriors and its Zelda theming caught my attention. So I played the original Hyrule Warriors and...I found it kinda meh. I found Age of Calamity on sale and despite not being enthralled with the first one, the Zelda fan in me could not resist a Breath of the Wild prequel. I could get through the Warriors gameplay if it meant being able to play through the events of the calamity. However, in a table-turning playthrough I found the gameplay in Age of Calamity to be rather addicting while the story ended up being just... meh. Age of Calamity's biggest strength is how it draws from Breath of the Wild and uses the exact same assets, design, and presentation and then builds an entirely different game around them. You can tell that the team at Koei Tecmo held great respect for, and got help from, Nintendo's Zelda team. It was good enough to get me through the first few missions until the Warriors gameplay clicked. Then it clicked hard and I wanted to upgrade all my weapons, learn character combos, and take on challenges more than I cared about how the story ended. Maybe I need to go back and give the first Hyrule Warriors another shot.

This is a fun musso style game using the Zelda license to craft a prequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. You get to play the events leading to the kingdom of Hyrule falling to darkness. The game is not perfect as far as frame rate is concerned but overall it is a fun new chapter in the Breath of the Wild saga.

This game was originally advertised as having the events that led to the plot of Breath of the Wild, but that's not the case at all. So if you were looking to buy the game because the story is canon, you'll be very disappointed However, the gameplay is still very fun. You're given a large roster of playable characters, with very unique play styles. If you've never played a Dynasty Warriors game or the first Hyrule Warriors, there's a demo in the eshop that should show you the basics.

If you like Koei's Dynasty Warriors or the original Hyrule Warriors then this game is for you. If you are looking for more LoZ-BotW then this game COULD be for you but know the following (no spoilers): *This is a time travel/alternate timeline and you'll eventually get to play all of the legendary heroes from BotW. *This is all combat, no shrines or puzzles. *The combat system is NOT 1:1 with BotW so you will have to get used to a new control scheme *There is a LOT of reading and a LOT of item collections for upgrades and weapon crafting if you want to get the whole experience. Text box and menu heavy interface. *You will play the same levels repeatedly but you do get to change characters and weapons *This is a side-story and not necessary for enjoying the Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom story line

The original Hyrule Warriors was released on three different Nintendo systems. I owned and played it on all three. I loved it! I also loved Breath Of The Wild. I played through to the ending and then went back (with some cheating) and unlocked the complete ending. I had achieved everything in it I knew I would yet still played for two more weeks because I had trouble moving on from it. That's a long winded way of saying when I saw there was a game that was a sequel in title to Hyrule Warriors and a prequel in story to Breath Of The Wild I was extremely excited. As its release date approached I realized I was so excited that the only outcome was I would be disappointed by it. I was kind of joking with that but unfortunately I was correct. I expected changes from the first game but basically the same game. Age of Calamity is so different! Not all of the changes are bad though. In the original switching between secondary weapons often had you accidentally switching characters (usually in an important boss fight). This does not happen in Age Of Calamity. Also there are these training levels and quests in between the levels that actually progress you through the game. They are important because they help you level your characters up as well as unlock attack moves, recipes and markets you can purchase items from. Then downside of these levels and quests is they totally kill the main storyline of the game. I do enjoy the main levels of the game and progressing between them but these levels and quests are far too numerous. I will stick with it and get as far as I can in the game but overall I just am not really into it. If I had not played the original it's possible I would love Age Of Calamity but I did and I'm let down by it. I rated it 4 stars because I don't hate it and it is still an interesting idea and timeline. I wouldn't say to skip it but I wouldn't really encourage anyone to drop everything and buy it either.

Very fun hack-and-slash style gameplay, with Zelda characters! If you enjoyed the first Hyrule Warriors and love Breath of the Wild, purchasing this game is a no brainer. The only downside is the inconsistent framerate at times, but at least its still being updated and supported by Nintendo.

Finally beat Breath of the Wild (BoTW) over my Christmas break from work. Been eying this release for quite awhile and couldn’t resist pulling the trigger at the sale price of 45 bucks. Played the first HW game on Wii U with my wife and we loved it. I was also intrigued that it filled in the story line of what happened in the 100 years before the events of BoTW. I have played this co-op with wife again and it’s been good fun. Unlike the Wii U version this one is split-screen which takes some time to get used to. The co-op mode does suffer from some frame rate slow down during some of the segments, but it wasn’t a deal breaker for me. We’re 50 hours into the campaign mode and the story has been good setting up the events that we all come to know in BoTW . Tons of content and we’ll keep going long after we complete the story. Really can’t go wrong with this one of you were a fan of the 1st HW or BoTW.

A really fun and involved game that adds a new twist to the Legend of Zelda universe and timeline. It is similar in concept to the original Hyrule Warriors but set in the Age of Calamity that precedes Breath of The Wild by 100 years. Getting to play as all the different characters from BoTW is fun and challenging, and thr story goes well with that told in BoTW. It also incorporates some of the weapon and food aspects of BoTW.

This game is AMAZING and a MUST buy. If you liked BOTW or Dynasty Worriors you will love this. The story is good and is packed full of content for hours of fun. The graphics, gameplay, controls, characters and story is great. This is also fun cause it is local multiplayer and you can play with your friends.

It puts you back in the world of Hyrule and expands on the storyline and characters you already know. For someone who spent months on BOTW I had to get this. There were mentions prior to release the frame rate drop, however I haven't seen a single issue. Maybe it was patched on release? Get it 5/5

Amazing game!!!!! Love the fighting style, graphics go amazing with it, and the story is good too. Of course, my personal opinion. But overall, I love this game and glad I got it as soon as it came out. Would recommend to any Legend of Zelda players and who loved playing Breath of The Wild game.

Different from other Zelda games, more of a button masher, but it offers a different play experience and the ability to switch between characters, all who play differently. I would recommend for fans of the series who are looking to fill in the story prior to BotW and generally like combat games

This game exceeded expectations in almost every way. Storytelling, gameplay, and there are many updates to come. Only issue is a hardware issue in that the game is not optimized and the switch is not a powerful console, meaning you will regularly see dips in FPS, some extreme. It more or less barely detracted from the gaming experience though, and is still enjoyable. Hopefully KT comes out with optimization patches at some point.

This game is great. It's just as fun as Breathe of the Wild. Multiple characters to choose from. Gameplay and controls are easy to use. The only real difference in Breath of the Wild is that it required some logic in order to beat the shrines, whereas this game only requires fighting.

Kind of a grindy game, the story isn't that great if you're playing it as a prequel to Breath of the Wild - This game is a lot of hack-and-slash, mob mashing and isn't open world. I had high expectations because of how masterful BotW was as a game but this game is decent in its own right. Fun to just kill a ton of mobs and the tidbits you get into seeing what Hyrule was like 100 years ago before the great calamity.

Good game! Bought it to play with my brother and it’s fun, though when you’re in 2 player mode, the hardware hits its limit and the frame rates will go down to like…4 FPS (which is sort of funny to watch)…just don’t have both players do the special attacks I guess

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Having never played anything in the Warriors series, I thought a BOTW prequel would be a great way to ease me in. I was right. I had a lot of fun with this gameplay style, and the BOTW story additions was just the cherry on top for me. If you're on the fence, give this game a try!

If you are a fan of Dynasty Warriors, Samurai Warriors, or the first Hyrule warriors this game is worth it. Their is lots of stuff to do in the game, it took me about 35 hours to finish the main story and their is lots to do after that. Lots of fun characters to play as.
