Barry Jenkins cements his directorial style with “If Beale Street Could Talk”. There is a lot of lush romance that feels so lyrical on the top with a lot of despair and sadness underneath. It truly is a work of art and one of the best films of 2018. The film is one of the best casted of the year. Stephan James is soulful and passionate. KiKi Layne is fantastic. She is strong while facing so much adversity. It’s a wonderful performance. Regina King has a few really strong scenes and is absolutely giving us an Oscar worthy performance. Jenkins’ camera close-ups really favor her. Brian Tyree Henry is a marvel. He shows up briefly and delivers a wonderful monologue that gives you the chills and again the camera lingers on his face. The rest of the cast is up to the task. Jenkins brilliantly cast well known actors in smaller roles that kind of flip the script on their personas. “Beale Street” truly has one of the best ensembles. Jenkins again teams up with James Laxton (Moonlight) to handle the cinematography. Jenkins and Laxton perfect the close-up. The faces and camera movements are one of the best things about the film. The filming style is bold and elegant. It’s incredible. Another great re-teaming is composer, Nicholas Britell (also of Moonlight) who in my opinion makes the finest score of the year. It’s a score laden with sweeping melodies that bring those already lush scenes crafted by Jenkins to life. “If Beale Street Could Talk” is a fantastic adaptation and he succeeds in letting James Baldwin truly live and breathe in this work. It let’s love and righteous anger triumph.

"Beale Street" Brings Baldwin's Book to Life

Barry Jenkins' adaptation of the great African American writer James Baldwin's 1974 novel slow burns a tragic romance with the social injustice that is still so much a part of life in this country. Jenkins explored black gay life in his Oscar winning film "Moonlight"; that film was a poetic, dreamy mosaic of a young man's emerging sexuality. This one tells a more conventional narrative of two young lovers, Fonny and Tish, who try to navigate both the city of New York and their families when Tish gets pregnant about the same time Fonny is framed for a crime he didn't commit. Regina King won an Oscar for Supporting Actress as Tish's mother, a warrior who fights to keep her daughter's dreams alive and win Fonny's release from prison. Stephan James and KiKi Layne star as Fonny and Tish who learn some hard truths about being black in America. This is heavy drama, well-acted and observant.

I wasn't a huge fan of MOONLIGHT, but I took a chance on Barry Jenkins' IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK. It was a beautiful simple story of love. Throughout the movie, you feel sad, but hopeful for these characters. I won't waste your time because I cannot describe this movie. I would recommend it, but rent it first. I loved it.

This was an awesome movie from beginning of to end. But ultimately a sad story of what truly happens to some black men mostly, and others when railroaded. When you are forced into a corner you at times don’t see an out. The epitome of an old movie that captures today’s legal circumstances. Family is always important.

The strength of family and the tenderness of young love is represented very well in this movie. In spite of everything that went against this young couple they perservered. Really deep and serious matters were addressed throughout the movie. Too much to get into here so I'll just say see it!

From the lush visuals to the enthralling score, Barry Jenkins follows up his critical success Moonlight with a beautiful film about love, hate, and injustice. A couple big laughs in there, but of tears aren’t streaming down your face by the end, check your pulse.

This is a movie that is well written and paced. This is a actual repentance of today world. This is a Drama that has scenes and action that are real, do not look away and say this does not happen, you are very much mistaken. This is not a feel good movie, but life’s not also for everyone.

Barry Jenkins' follow-up to Moonlight is a beautifully composed story, that is shot so perfectly. The film itself is worth every penny but the bonus features give you a greater appreciation for what Jenkins brought to screen.

Beale Street swept me away- - from its delicate direction, gorgeous cinematography, and fully fleshed out characters. The score is magnificently beautiful and haunting for such a somber and lovely film.

The subject matter will show you the injustices that exist in not only this country but others as well. The acting is great. but , to me just a tad slow moving. Makes one sad wondering why we all can not get rid of these biases.

I watched the movie with my wife. We enjoyed it. I liked the Storyline and the Cinematography. I think some of the characters were a little over dramatic but some nailed their roles. I think it’s a good date night movie.

The story line about a love story set in the early 1970s in Harlem resonated with me as I am a Harlem native. I read the James Baldwin book and was anxious to see the film.
