This was a terrific adaptation of Melville's Moby Dick. It was a twist on the story and not so much focused on the captain's search for the whale but more about the character of the captain. Chris Hemsworth was very good as the experienced captain of the ship. We could see his humor under the surface of a ship that had another captain who was placed on the same ship but very much out of his element. The whale played a more secondary figure in this movie although his presence was used to bring out the story of the two captains on the same ship. Although we are not necessarily looking for a happy ending but that was what happened in this case-more like a satisfactory ending with the whale going off into the sunset and the two captains reaching a common moral ground.

Wonderful Ron Howard movie about a Whale (think Moby Dick) and the sailor who's very, very mad at him! Seriously, this movie is loosely based on the true incident that inspired the novel Moby Dick. But it is so much more. A fresh out of school captain, an experienced crew and a first mate who knows his job in the form of Chris H. The special effects are stunning and the whales look like whales. This movie also gives you an inside look at how and why we almost killed off the great White Wales in the 18th century as well as what these men had to endure to get the oil out of the whales to sell back on shore. Some gross parts, some bloody parts and some sad parts. A story of survival and friendship. This movie has it all and I highly recommend it.

A drama done well in 3-D

Be aware that this is not the most pleasant film to watch, but it was very well done, and will give you insight into a time gone buy.
Here we have a drama that takes advantage of being in 3D. For the most part, I think that the 3D was done well. The image was clear, crisp, and clean. I'm glad that I purchased it from Best Buy for $10. It's something that I wouldn't have normally purchased. But I couldn't pass up this movie in 3D for this price. I think if you get it, you won't be disappointed, and you might learn something.

I ENJOYED THIS MOVIE VERY MUCH---WELL DIRECTED BY RON HOWARD ,HAS GIVING US A LOOK INTO THE PAST OF LIFE AND TIMES OF WHALE HUNTING. AN ANIMAL LOVER MY SELF , AND AGANIST CRUELTY TOWARD ANIMAL, MR HOWARD SPARED US THE ACTUAL BLOODY SCENES OF THE KILLING ITSELF. DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY THIS MOVIES DIDN'T DO AS WELL WHEN ORIGINALLY RELEASED--IT'S WELL ACTED AND FILMED--BRING US BACK INTO THIS PERIOD OF THE HEART ACH OF BEING AWAY FROM ONES FAMILY FOR MONTHS AT A TIME ON THE OPEN SEA--AND MANS STRIVE TO BE AT THE TOP OF HIS GAME.

I purchased the regular Blu-Ray version because the store I shop at was out of the 3D version. The story draws you in and you feel like you are a part of the voyage. I think they built up Chris Hemsworth a little to much through out the movie. I did like watching the movie over reading the book. Ron Howard and Warner Bros nailed it. I am happy that the sound offers Dolby Atmos. The sound is amazing! I just wish I could have bought the 3D version. I guess I should have went around the corner and purchased it from another retailer. The Blu-Ray was not on sale and cost me $22.99 to add to my collection. I will probably watch it 7 or 8 times. Just loved it!!!

In 1820, crewmen (Chris Hemsworth, Benjamin Walker, Cillian Murphy) aboard the New England vessel Essex face a harrowing battle for survival when a whale of mammoth size and strength attacks with force, crippling their ship and leaving them adrift in the ocean. Pushed to their limits and facing storms, starvation, panic and despair, the survivors must resort to the unthinkable to stay alive. Their incredible tale ultimately inspires author Herman Melville to write "Moby-Dick."I'm

Do yourself a favor; before starting this movie, turn off the lights, eliminate all distractions, and prepare to be fully engrossed in the experience. The beautiful 4k images, highlighted by magnificent camera work, are only surpassed by the gripping narrative. The storytelling masterfully encourages you to be invested in each character, giving each scene weight and each choice consequence without veering into being heavy-handed or moralistic. In short, this is a "must buy" for anyone with even a passing interest in maritime tales and a "strongly recommend" for all others.

This movie was incredible. I'm not sure why it tanked in theaters, but I have a feeling it's going to do very well on home release. It took me stopping at 3 different Best Buys to find it in stock. That has to say something. Anyway, incredible visuals, superb acting from the cast. This was my first time seeing Tom Holland in a movie. I only knew of him from being cast as the new Marvels version of Spiderman. I'm happy to say he will have a very long and promising career ahead of him. He did such a great job here. If you passed on this movie in theaters, now is your chance to see what you were missing.

This is one of those movies that will not be for everyone, let me get that out of the way right away. For those not familiar with what this movie is about, this is the story that Melville based the novel "Moby Dick" on. For the most part its a slow moving movie that is more dramatic then anything else... there is some action but it really plays second fiddle here. The acting is fine with Hemsworth doing a fine job in his role.

an excellently acted movie acting and scenes were spectacular must watch in blu ray the story line of whaling in the early part of the 19century where whale oil was used for lighting lamps the oil was in Hugh demand and all the whales were been slaughtered by their thousands this movie depects the hunt on a great white his vengeance inflicted on the boat and the crew even when in the life boats but the most dramatic scene is when the great white comes back a second time to observe the few survivors wandering aimlessly in the ocean see the movie

The film is an immersive occurrence – it literally takes the viewer back nearly 200 years to the heyday of the American Whaling involvement, which was centered at Nantucket, Mass., and you will be taken-to-sea and its ever-present danger. No doubt about it – whaling is a tough and dangerous business and this is a whale of a story! There’s an authenticity to this life-death struggle of a complex survival tale – with all the elements of emotion, stretched intelligence and physical endurance that a whaler is asked to bear. Great View!

I can not speak to the actual quality of the DVD itself as we bought this movie to give to someone as a gift. We were very glad Best Buy had the Blue Ray version that also included a DVD because the person does not have Blue Ray but we are sure will have it in the near future. The movie packs that include both are also great for taking a movie you own to a friend's house or anywhere Blue Ray may not be available!

Though the film portrays itself as a tale strictly based off the legend of Moby Dick the film is actually more a character story about the captain and co-captain of the ship. The story plays well, it's a slow burn but every scene with the whale(s) is something to be seen! The film is beautiful and sounds amazing. If you have a good home theater system or soundbar you'll want to crank this one up!

Nicely conceived account of how Hermann Melville got the idea for his book, "Moby Dick" - interviewing a survivor of a sailing ship that encountered a mighty whale. But this story is deeper: it contains the leadership struggle between sailors and carries the whale tail further by continuing with the struggle for survival by the crew.
Good special effects and a fast paced script keeps this very entertaining.

As the story behind the fictional "Moby Dick" is lived and documented, we are taken on a voyage around southern tip of South America into the Pacific where a great white whale stoves a whaling vessel and leaves them adrift in small boats; surely to perish on the seas which are devoid of wind, food and water. Along the way back to civilization, unthinkable acts occur in order for the few remaining crew to claw their way back.
