Maybe it just doesn't suit my style because I don't use direct flash, so when I point it to the ceiling, people's faces look half lit.

Combo it with some Rogue flash gels and you can produce some excellent results. It's great for on the move photography where you rather not want to use a full-sized diffuser. I'd say have both for maximum flexibility.
