I've had my Insteon automation kit for about a month now and I love it! It was extremely easy to set up and customer service was great with any questions that I had. So far I have installed four wall switches, two plugs, and one lightbulb. Having preset scenes is great at night. If we are watching a movie we can just go and press the setting and all the lights will go to their predetermined brightness. One of the main reasons I chose insteon is that it works with any platform. In our house we have a Windows Phone, iPhone, Windows 8.1 laptop and tablet and an iPad. The system works great on all of them. The system also works with nest thermostats. The apps make it very easy to add new devices and create new scenes. I would recommend this to anybody looking to start off in home automation.

Best starter kit for home automation

I started my home automation quest researching the different protocols for home automation (Zigbee, Zwave, X10). Insteon is currently the way to go. It's been the most reliable and is very expandable. I'm pretty tech savvy (electronics engineer) and setup only had one snag. I plugged the power supply to the controller unit into a UPS (battery backup). The UPS had enough isolation circutry that the controller unit could not communicate to the receivers. My knowledge of X10 protocol, I knew some of the communication travels through your power lines. After plugging the power directly into the wall socket, it all worked flawlessly. The Android app was easy to install and configure. I also wanted automation, not just remote control. There are free software programs that work with Insteon, like HouseLink, but I find them clunky. I was able to get it running, but it took awhile. When you're versed in Insteon and how their system works, your creativity can run wild with things to automate.

This is my second HUB, the first one was an older model that burned after about 18 months of use. Decided to give it a second chance as I already have multiple Insteon devices at home. This HUB is a much better device and thanks to the improvements Insteon has been giving to the App, the overall experience has become a much easy and pleasant one. As a System Analyst and computer tech, I like to play around with systems like this one to create complicated scenes, originally using the Computer Software, but now just using the App on both Android and iOS devices. I could say this system is easy enough for most users that have at least basic knowledge on computers and electronics. For those who like to install systems like this, I recommend it as it is not only easy but also "pocket friendly" as well as prices are very good. For those who like to do home automation but have no knowledge on computers, you can give t a try if you are not afraid, or have a technician do the install for you as long you are ok with paying extra money.

I was using the Indigo Software with a USB adapter previously and I wanted to move to the Hub so I like the fact that the Starter kit w/ 2 lamp modules is cheaper than the Hub by itself. So far I like the Hub even though it does have some limitations as far as not working w/ the 6 or 8 button SwitchLinc switches and it can't handle if/then programming. But otherwise it works good and I don't have to keep my computer on all the time. Also the setup was much easier for allowing access to lights from outside my home network.

    Good Starter Kit

Pro: The kit includes the Hub and two LampLinc modules; retails on smarthome for $130 and $50, respectively. The kit sells for $120 this is great to get into some of the more advanced features of Insteon and save $110. I'm familiar with the Insteon products having a couple outlets, couple appliance modules and the 8-button switch. I decided to purchase this to save some money to upgrade what i currently have. In the process of setting up the House Linc software, I found that I had to factory reset each the 8-button switch and re-add the switch to HouseLinc to get the switch properly recognized. I run the mobile add on my Samsung Note II and it runs well just be sure to close the app completely and not let it idle as it has a tendency to fail to connect to the Hub. Con: HouseLinc software. The schedules worked for a couple of weeks and then just started to fail. I'm still trouble shooting to determine the exact cause of the failure. Be sure to note that the HouseLinc software does require a PC to remain powered on for the software to work properly. I knew this prior to setting up the software so that wasn't an issue. Overall, I'm content however I am thinking of upgrading from the Hub to the ISY.

Great Low Cost Home Automation Solution

I bought this kit to automate turning on inside home lighting while on vacation. Previously I had unreliable outside christmas light timers I would connect to floor lamps. However, my outside front house lights would always be off - - a clear indication we were not home because we always have them on at night when we are home. I bought the starter kit for the inside lights and two of the SwitchLinc Dual-Band Dimmers for the outside front lights. I Set the outside lights to turn on and off at night and now I don't even mess with them when we are home. My plan worked because my neighbor commented that he had not seen me around the last week but his visiting mother noticed that lights were on throughout the week - - SUCCESS! Now if it would only help remind me to let the neighbors know I'm out of town! Very satisfied! Only CON - perhaps because I have not figured it out - is that when away I could not connect via my phone (even via wi fi internet). It appears I have to be on my network - - but maybe I have not setup correctly. Would also be nice if there was a PC internet access - I think INSTEON has but I could not find and the beta version was very limited in usefulness.

Easy to set up as well as to link (network) your insteon devices in the house. The price is good too. You get two modules with the kit when added together cost more than the hub itself. You can access your home network devices from anywhere in the world via smartphone. IP cameras can be easily controlled and monitor from your smartphone using the Insteon hub.

This camera and the accessories were a snap to install. I was able to view the images on my iPhone as well with the free downloaded app. Took less than 45 minutes to get the whole system running and working the way I wanted. Images are clear and there is very little lag. For the price, this security system is a great buy, and I plan on buying some other accessories soon.

Love this system, we use it at our business and home. Easy to use and works great every time. Just requires some dynamic dns setup which is fine for someone like me but may require support otherwise. Insteon offers good support.

What more can you say about a device that allows you to turn off and turn on your lights no matter how close of far you are from your phone. I mean who ever thought about this needs a big hug and kiss from parents, children and everyone from around the world. it was a very easy set up and connection to home network and from there it is the gift that keeps on given. ever doubt if you turned off or on a light on another floor, check the phone and find out.

I've been using X10 home automation for years. Decided to jump to Insteon to gain more reliability... Wow, what a great move. *Most* of the Insteon products support X10 as well, so the cutover is very easy. My only complaint about the 'hub' is that some of the more advanced software packages (HCA 11 for example) don't support it yet. It does work very well with the Android app and HouseLinc.

I only use one of the lamp modules as a wake up light. I set it to turn the light on dimly 8 minutes before my alarm goes off at 5:30 AM and to slowly get brighter. Half the time I wake up gently before the alarm goes off. I really like it. I am looking forward to buying more Insteon products.

The Hub installed easily, works reliably, and recognized (found) my 22 Insreon devices with no problems. This is my second Insteon Hub. The first, from another vendor, did not work at all. I use the Insteon software on an Android tablet for setup and use the web site for my windows computers and windows phone. The Hub is excellent and has great potential, but the software is limited and clunky. My Foscam cameras work well with the Hub and software. My few old X10 devices will work with the Android software, but not from the web site. 5 Star if the software is improved.

Very picky about location of base. Doesn't reliably control existing x10 units around house. Never could get the Internet functionality working. Couldn't get through to Tech Support to get assistance with that aspect.
