JBL has done a wonderful job with this intuitive Bluetooth speaker! The unit arrived packaged exceptionally well within a nice enclosure with a carrier handle. Setup was very user friendly and easy to employ! Wow, I must say that “Google Assistant” is far superior to “Alexa” in my humble opinion. As an owner of both, Google Assistant responds so much easier, informative and reliable. There are times I can ask “Alexa” questions and I either get, “I don’t know” or anything! JBL has certainly lived up to its name with great bass, clear audio and reliable communications. I immediately requested “Google Assistant” to play my Pandora list and this task was quickly and efficiently done. Overall, AWESOME JOB JBL!!!

It doesn’t like to stay connected to your device at all. It will drop the Bluetooth even only 5 feet away. The sound quality is ok but what’s annoying is you get what sound like record scratch sounds fairly often. Makes me wonder if the speaker can handle certain frequencies ok. Setup was annoying - you have to download the google home app just to get it to connect to Bluetooth.

Google Assistant works great, even talking in a low voice from across the room. The speaker does not quite give the room filling sound of other speakers in the same price group.

I am going to be very honest. When I received this JBL I was excited only because I can’t live without Google Assistant or Alexa and this had the former but I thought it was just one more speaker with an AI assistant built in but it is so much more. Sure, JBL is not exactly synonym for bad quality but sometimes good companies jump into trend bandwagons without much care. It is not the case for the Link 300. Although it has Bluetooth and I did notice a bit of a delay from my iPhone, I did not care much about that because it also connects and streams via Wi-Fi, which is tens of times better than Bluetooth. There is no comparison because the sound is not compressed and due to the quality of the speaker and good size of the woofer, I experienced rich acoustics. Of course my love for this speaker is further strengthened because I can command it with my voice and get any information available on Google, have it tell me about the weather as well as a few jokes, and control my Phillips hue lights and my Bose sound system. My only complaint is one that I have about other AI assistants such as Alexa. It cannot control iTunes or Amazon music natively due to competition with Google’s similar service. However, it can control Pandora, Spotify and other services without any hacking. It is the best Bluetooth speaker I own and ironically Bluetooth is not what I care most about it.

The setup for this JBL - Link 300 speaker was easy to navigate. I downloaded the Google Home app, followed the simple process, and I was up and running in a minute or two. I was looking down at my phone, finalizing some setup details, and asked the device to play music from my music streaming service. The music came on immediately while I was still looking at my phone. When I heard the richness and quality of the music coming from that speaker, it instantly demanded my full attention. I stared at the thing for a full minute. I just could not believe how rich the sound was. I use both the Android and iOS versions of the app. I noticed when I'm playing music from my streaming service, and I hit the home button on my iOS device, the music stops streaming. It gets annoying when I hear a streaming song I like, and press the home button on my device to see what the song is, and the internet music stops playing. Grrrr! That isn't the case when I'm playing the songs contained on my Mp3 device. I began putting the speaker through its paces by playing a variety of music. The first track I played was a popular song with a bass boosted version. Usually I start at the high end when I test speakers, but I HAD to see how this speaker handled deep, booming bass. The bass was impressive! Booming bass was resonating off every wall in the room; I feared for my windows! However, as good as the bass was, I did hear some distortion, but not bad enough to affect my opinion of the speaker, or the rating I gave. The music quality superseded its minor flaws. It excelled at midtones, but less so with the highs. When I played jazz, the lowtones in the music definitely competed with the saxophone and the piano. That's fine for most music, not so much for jazz and classical. Having said all that, I STILL gave this bad boy five stars. I just fell in love with the quality of music emanating from a stand alone speaker. I own other speakers that are expensive and from big name manufacturers, but this JBL - LINK 300 is the speaker I kick it with the most.

We’ve moved past the era of the shelf system - into a sea of bluetooth connected speakers. The JBL Link 300 is one of those speakers, but what separates it from the rest of the fishes in the sea is it’s stunning sound and connected nature. The JBL Link 300 is not a portable speaker, but rather it fills that more traditional shelf system role, but in a fraction of the space. It comes with a power brick, which is somewhat of a negative in my book. Wall warts are bad enough, but if you install this on a kitchen counter or other location you have to deal with managing the cable and brick. It would have been nice to see an integrated power supply, and increasing the enclosure’s size would have been a valid trade off. The enclosure itself is solid and well made, with a decent amount of weight. The fabric covering the speaker seems high quality, and the shape is broken up by the passive radiator on the back. There are volume buttons, a bluetooth button, and Google Assistant button found on top, with a WiFi LED near the bottom. When you active Google Assistant, either via the button or saying “Ok, Google” 4 LED lights on the front will light up to show status and activation. Sound wise, you get a bass heavy relatively omnidirectional dispersion. While bass heavy, it’s important to note that the sound isn’t muddy. Unlike some smaller speakers that either rely on acoustic suspension, or bass reflex ports, the JBL relies on a passive radiator that puts on quite a show. The advantage of this speaker configuration is great bass performance. The radiator isn’t driven, but rather reverberates in a resonance with the enclosure and active drivers. It makes the bass very defined and punchy verses many other brands. Go listen to any JBL speaker, as they seem to have perfected this approach. Almost every JBL I’ve seen recently uses this design to great effect, and the JBL Link 300 is no exception. Highs are clear and crisp and mids seem to keep a decent definition without getting lost. Unless you’re standards are way above the budget of this speaker you’ll be impressed with the audio quality. Functionality wise, the Link is amazing. The integration of Google Assistant makes this speaker extremely useful. My house is filled with Alexa devices, so the Google Assistant is fighting an uphill battle in my household. Where Google excels is answering questions. Where I can trip up Alexa with most questions, Google does a great job of finding, and reading an answer. It seems more natural in how it approaches answers, and interactions with a human. Google can also recognize your voice, which is somewhat freaky. Some integrations want to identify you to avoid privacy issues. Furthermore Speaking of integrations, this is one place where the Google Assistant falls a bit short. It can integrate with many different devices, but some of them setup through the app, while others require asking the assistant to pair. Logitech Harmony integrates this way, while many other hubs can be paired through the app directly. I found this process a bit more frustrating than establishing skills on Alexa. Another downside for me was the lack (as of this writing) of integration with Insteon, which powers much of my home lighting (however I was able to setup some helpful groups using Harmony and activate them). These are some growing pains that I think will get worked out over time. Google assistant makes it easy to use YouTube music, Google Play music, Pandora, or Spotify. You can choose which service is your default, and asking to play songs is extremely easy. I’ve found that if you don’t specify the exact song title, Google is quite good an understanding the song you meant. Another advantage is the integration with other Chromecast devices. You can ask the speaker to play YouTube videos on your TV, assuming you have either a Chromecast or built-in casting in your TV. This is pretty cool, and quite useful. All in all the JBL Link 300 is an amazing speaker, with great functionality and sound. It outshines all but the most expensive speakers in its class, and offers tons more functionality with the integrated Google Assistant. Despite some teething issues with Google Assistant, there is more value here. Despite being an almost exclusive Alexa household, this speaker has taken over music duties in our living space, and is setup quite well to take over many of the automation tasks as it’s integrations grow. If you’re in the market for a Google Assistant - then look no further than the JBL!
