    Shouldn't Sound So Good

There is no way these speakers should sound good. They're small, weird shape, and designed for surround / effects or Atmos elevation speakers. But darn it, I tested them all alone, just like a bookshelf speaker and they sound far better than I ever expected. Way better. OK, there is not a lot of bass, that's to be expected given the size of the woofer. The woofer was working very hard, the excursion distance is surprisingly long, but physics just says there won't be a lot of low end. They are designed to be used with a subwoofer. I'm now convinced after testing several of these Stage2 speakers, the magic sauce is the tweeter. Midrange and highs are super clear and well defined. Honestly, if they didn't have that silly angled designed, these would make fantastic bookshelf speakers. I really hate the binding posts. They're in the wrong place and angled weird. It is impossible to use banana plugs if the speaker is tight against a wall. And if the speaker is mounted on top of a floor standing speaker, the back side has to hang out over the rear. There is a cross shaped keyhole for wall mounting. And a threaded hole for mounting brackets. Next to the binding post is a switch to set the speaker as Atmos or Surround. I couldn't hear any difference when the switch was thrown. An anti-slip mat is included to place the speaker on top of a floor standing speaker.

Adding A Completely New Dimension To Sound!

I love these speakers! The JBL Stage2 240H Dolby Atmos “Height Module” speakers have added an entirely new and wonderful dimension to my listening experience. Let me explain why. For some reason I always feel the need to include the unboxing of a product in my reviews. I personally believe that you can get a great feel about a product through the way it is packaged. So far it has worked out as a great indicator of what to expect. With that said, the thoughtfulness and effort that went into the packaging of the 240H speakers is remarkable. As we all know, shipping items via the major package shippers is a crap-shoot. I’ve received packages before that looked as though they had been dropped to earth from the space-station. I could tell the 240H speakers encountered a few rough spots along their journey to my front porch, so I was a bit apprehensive. My concerns were quickly put to rest. They arrived unscathed and undamaged. If JBL will invest that kind of energy into their shipping practices, it’s a sure sign they invest that same energy into the research, development, materials and building of their products. The box contained two JBL 240H speakers, a very high-quality anti-slip pad for each speaker, and a great looking speaker grille for each speaker. Also included is a User Manual. When I first read about Dolby Atmos I was as fascinated and intrigued as everyone else. All my previous home theater/music listening experiences were based on the “Louder the better” principle, just so long as there was no distortion. The JBL 240H’s changed all that. The 240H is the progeny of the Dolby Atmos technology. Rather than simply pointing sound at the listener in a linear fashion, height modules add “height” to the experience by bouncing sound waves off of a ceiling and creating the illusion that sound is actually coming from above, such as when you hear an airplane, or if someone is yelling at you from a three-story building. In other words, not only do you get to experience sound from a linear listening point, you can now experience in 3D. But the 240H is not only a dedicated height module speaker, it can be used as a great speaker for surround sound and as an exceptional general purpose speaker for a dorm room, or for an apartment. Each 240H sports a 4.5” woofer, 2-way crossover (which means higher frequencies are sent to the tweeter while the lower frequencies are sent to the woofer, as opposed to a speaker in which all the signals are sent to all the speakers), and “Next Generation” HDI horn which allows for precise directional output. The 240H speakers allow for a great overall listening experience that is appreciatively distortion-free, with a great frequency range (85 Hz – 25 kHz). Again, as a standalone speaker in a smaller environment, they will deliver an exceptional listening experience. And as a dedicated height module, they will provide a 3-dimensional listening experience that will forever change the way we want to experience sound thanks to the Dolby Atmos technology. And again, the 240H can be used as either a dedicated height channel, or as a great addition to your surround sound system. When I first noticed the price of the 240H, I was a bit shocked as I thought that was the price for each one. But when I discovered it was for a pair of 240H’s, I realized what a great bargain they really are. For the directional dimension they can add to your listening experience, they are absolutely a great investment. If you are looking for a truly worthwhile addition to your surround sound experience, or a formidable standalone music/TV listening experience, I highly recommend the JBL Stage2 240H Dolby Atmos Height Module speakers. You just simply can’t go wrong, and with their jaw-dropping 5-year limited warranty, you will enjoy years of worry-free listening.
