    Good fit, terrible sound

These buds are pretty bad. The fit is okay but it’s about the only thing that is okay. There are five sets of tips included in addition to the preinstalled tips. I found a size that keeps the buds in my ears in most circumstances, barring any abrupt head swings. The case is wireless charging capable and works with my wireless charging pad. It also has a built-in USB cable for charging. The buds paired easily to my iOS device and I downloaded and installed the JLab Air ANC app. The ANC is pretty weak and barely noticeable compared to the passive noise cancellation of most in-canal buds. Experimenting with different sized tips didn’t help, so I applied a pending update to the buds via the app. It took a solid 20-30 minutes to install but didn’t improve the ANC quality at all. The app also has an ANC level control but it doesn’t improve ANC quality much, if at all. The ANC is pretty lousy but the sound is even worse. It’s flat, tinny sounding and completely lacking in bass. It also occasionally cuts out for no reason. The Air ANC app has an adjustable equalizer but it’s also pretty terrible and actually makes sound even worse. These buds sound like something you’d buy at a dollar or five dollar discount store. I know that sounds like an exaggeration but it’s absolutely true. I’ve purchased buds for under $10 that sounded as good or better. In addition to the terrible sound quality, there are a few additional cons with these buds: - The buds often emit a loud squeal of feedback noise when handled. - The case seems flimsy and the leatherette finish scuffs and scratches easily. - Using the EQ is extremely frustrating because the entire app tends to slide when operating the sliders on my touchscreen. If these were a cheap, generic, sub-$40 set of true wireless buds, the poor sound might be a tiny bit forgivable. But at this price point, the abysmal sound is unacceptable. There are simply too many much better yet comparably priced options to choose from.

Great features and battery life; average sound

These new JLab buds combine great features and battery life into a compact and attractive form factor, but the experience is somewhat hindered by audio and DSP performance that are only average Pros: - Compact form factor - Wide range of soft gels to fit almost any ears - Automatically detect when they’re inserted into or removed from your ears - Great battery life: 8 hours (up to 12 hours with noise cancelling disabled) - Carry case provides up to 3 additional charges - Carry case can also be wirelessly charged and has a short built-in USB-A cable - Plenty of “tap to control” options for volume, start/pause, skipping tracks, and adjusting noise cancellation mode - "Movie mode" reduces latency to keep lips in sync with audio. - Reasonable volume Cons: - So-so audio performance requires a lot of tweaking with the EQ functions - The buds reset to the EQ1 setting each time they’re reconnected - Noise cancellation and “be aware” pass through performance a mixed bag - Easy to accidentally activate “tap to control” functions while adjusting the buds in your ears - Audio performance is greatly impacted by getting a tight fit with the ear gels - The carry case uses USB-A only, so newer USB-C chargers will need an adaptor Overall, this is a thoughtful and complete package. The carry case has a great array of charging features including a built-in short USB A cable (sorry, no USB-C so newer chargers will need an adaptor) and support for Qi wireless charging. JLabs claim 12 hours of playback time on a single charge and the ability to charge up to 3 times from the case and my experience bears this out. This is one pair of buds that are probably not going to leave you without power. Setup is easy and I was able to pair the buds and connect the JLab app without any issues. On my first connection the app prompted a software update, which required two attempts to complete but was otherwise not problematic. The app also provides adjustments for noise cancelling, “be aware” mode (which is supposed to funnel in some outside noise to keep you aware of your surroundings), and an extensive EQ. All worked fine in practice, but be aware that although there are 4 EQ presets, the buds default to the first setting each time they’re reconnected, so you need to select the one you want each time. The buds themselves are light, compact, and relatively minimalist in their design. They fit well and stay in place (although for workouts consider the “sport” version of this same model). They also feature extensive tap controls which in my experience work fine buy can be complex to remember (different numbers and durations of taps perform different functions on different ears, etc.). Once learned they shouldn’t pose any problems to execute. In my use across a variety of soundscapes, the noise cancellation feature was only marginally effective. Sometimes I could hear it suppressing background noises such as fans or motors but in other cases (like with a garage door opening and closing) I couldn’t really tell a difference. The “be aware” mode, which is a good idea in theory, had similarly mixed performance. That said, if you get a good fit with the ear gels (plenty of sizes are included), external noise is not a major issue. The biggest drawback for me is that the sound and DSP performance are OK, but not great, even compared to other buds at this end of the market. If you get a good fit with the ear gels the sound is full and reasonably clear, but I struggled even with the EQ features to get balanced performance across the frequency range without introducing harshness or DSP processing artifacts. For example, clearly hearing the hi-hats in rock track required over 60% boost on the upper EQ bands, but this introduced some harshness to the vocal track which I assume is due to D2A or compression artifact noise. The same source with other buds did not pose the same difficulty. That said, if you’re OK to mess with the solid EQ app a little you can get entirely acceptable sound from these buds and the long battery life, good design, and full feature set make them a solid choice at this end of the market.

    Solid ANC Wireless Earbuds

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

The JLab Audio Epic Air ANC True Wireless Earbuds may not displace your high-end audiophile earbuds, but they are quite good in their own right. I first came across JLab products a couple of years ago and was quite impressed with the value they brought at the price point. The company continues to refine its offerings, and this is their latest and greatest wireless earbud. As is typical for JLab, the sound is quite good overall, although it gets a little muddied at the extremes. If you listen to them without seeing the price first, you'll think they would be more expensive. And the fit, finish, and style also would give that impression. Happily, JLab offers wireless charging for these earbuds. The charging solutions JLab typically offers are frustrating, so I'm glad to see they have taken a positive step this with this new model. They still have a USB cable integrated into the charging box; in my experience, these are a pain to deal with. The cable is very short, and this can create space issues when charging. Thankfully, I have several wireless chargers and can avoid the annoying cable. The integrated charging cable is something JLab seems proud of, but it's one of the most annoying things about JLab products. I'm generally a fan of ANC earbuds and am happy to report the JLab version of this feature works well, as does the pass-through hearing option, which they call "Be Aware." This feature alone is worth the price of admission, IMO. I use Be Aware when walking/hiking with my dog, and it allows me to remain alert to my environment. My last pair of JLab earbuds did not have an app you could use with them. These do, and it makes a difference. With the app, you can set your equalizer mode in order to better tailor the sound to your liking. Although I'm not a bass hog, with small buds like this I generally recommend the "bass boost" option, and that's what I prefer with these. The wear detect sensor feature works so far. Basically, if you remove the earbuds, the sensor detects that and pauses your music. Once you put the earbuds back in your ear, the music resumes. Four stars because the sound quality, while good, is still not on par with more premium earbuds. Plus, that charging cable just annoys me. Every. Single. Time. Those minor complaints aside, this is a good quality, decent-sounding, nicely styled set of ANC earbuds with some nifty features Keep rocking JLab! But please kill the integrated charging cable nonsense..

This should really be 4.5 stars. The earbud are outstanding once you have them set up correctly. They are a little finicky to having the correct size ear tip. When I first put them in the bass was very week however after a change to a larger size tip for better fit, the bass became very strong and tight at least for ear buds. I can say I was very impressed with that. As far as connecting this took a couple of tries with my iPhone however once they were connected they have reconnect every time. Connect to my laptop easy and straightforward. The features are outstanding and work well. You can make any adjustments need with out opening the app, that being said it does take sometime to get used to multi taps to do thing and at times it may not pick up the taps correctly (1 tap vs hold and 2 vs 3 taps). This was less than 10% of the time and could just be fat finger mistakes. The app for iPhone is very good and intuitive. As far as the time claims they tend to be a bit over stated - the claim for this was 12+ hrs of play back. I was only able to get about 10, still that’s a long time for this size package in ear and probably more than most would every need before return them to the case. The also seem to be very comfortable. After about 4 hours I typically get tired of things stuck in my ears however didn’t even start to notice these until about six hrs. The cloud tip really adds to the comfort level. I would recommend trying those first. The only drawbacks I could find were a few time calls didn’t switch to the earbuds, probably just a firmware update need. The other is more of a complaints than issue - the iPhone app requires that the app be open and on the DL page to do the firmware update, won’t work in the background. This can be a bit of a pain as it takes a couple of minutes to complete.

These headphones are, at best, OK. The finishes are nice, and they feel premium, but there are a few points which really detract from using them. Fit: I cannot get these to stay in my ear when exercising… I’ve tried several of the tips provided, but they always slip out when doing stationary exercise, much less any jogging or running. Noise Cancelling: Saying these have noise cancelling is charitable. When they stay in (not often for long) you can notice some noise cancelling, but only about 20% of what you might find on higher-end headphones. I can only conclude that this point was put on the box as a sales tactic. Audio: The audio quality for these headphones is nice. It is comparable to any other pair of in-ear headphones. Finishes: JLab swung for the fences with the finishes. The leatherette case is very nice. The feeling of the touch-pads is a nice metal. The USB charger attached to the case feels very sturdy. It is a shame that this is the best aspect of the headphones.

I use these to watch tv, so I don't have a review on sound when it comes to music. They have great battery life. BUT, they often fall out of sync with the TV show I'm watching and it is almost impossible to get them to sync up - you just have to wait and they will randomly re-sync - or not. As well, and this is weird but consistent, if you tilt your head down, say to look at your phone which is not a big tilt, they will pause. If they touch anything, they will pause. So you can't lay down (tilt problem) nor put your head on a pillow, have a hood on your hoodie up, etc. (touch issue). Would not recommend.
