I purchased this Blu-ray for a planned screening of La Bamba to kick off a local fall film series. The film looked and sounded great. I loved this film as a kid (it made me want to learn guitar), and when I watched it again during the Covid lockdown, I realized there was more to it than just a music biopic. The booklet included with the Criterion release includes a wonderful essay by film critic Yolanda Machado examining the film's legacy, how much it meant to the LatinX community upon its release in 1987, and how the little Holywood had expected from the film. The music is still exciting, the performances are strong, it looks great, and this is the release this special film deserves.

This is a timeless tragedy about the ties of love, family and fame. Richie Vallens life was cut too short at 17 in a plane crash. A tale of growing up a Latino in the 50's and achieving rock and role fame. From farm to fame, the story of a good boy making it for his mother, brother and nationality. 1950s but still relevant today.

This version of La Bamba is pretty decent, however the previous release performed by "Twilight Time" is noticeably better in quality. Although this version is a pretty good bang for your buck. I really can't wait until a 4K Blu-ray DVD version is released. This is one of my favorite movies ever!
