Great Gaming Laptop

This is my second Lenovo laptop, replacing a 5 year old Lenovo IdeaPad Y560. Which I would still be using if the power connector did not go bad. Enough about the old...on to the new.
This is a great mid level gaming laptop. I will first give the pros, then the cons and you can decide for yourself if this is a good deal.
Pros:
1. Fast processor and decent GPU. It has a 4th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-4720HQ processor which is a very decent processor. It is not the latest as the most current gaming laptops are starting to feature the 6th Gen Intel's. The GPU is a mobile GeForce GTX 960M graphics processer with 2 GB of memory (note this is a switchable graphics laptop as the main GPU when not playing graphic intensive video games is an Intel HD 4600#. It plays most if not all of the games I like at max resolution #1080p# including BF4 and War Thunder. Make sure you update the video drivers to NVidia's latest.
2. Video Display is crisp and clear. The touch capability is great to have but not a necessity. Does not show too many fingerprints, although brightness is a bit dimmer than other displays which can be corrected in game by increasing brightness or gamma.
3. Thin. The laptop is a great size. It is thin but not flimsy feeling. It has some heft to it. No DVD built in #separate drive is provided# and that keeps the form factor smaller.
4. Full size lighted keyboard. This is the first laptop I have owned with a full size keyboard and number pad. Is great for those that play ARMA series games.
5. 3 USB ports #2 are 3.0# - good number of USB ports but I do wish there were a few more. If you upgrade your mouse to a Bluetooth one you can then free a USB port if needed.
6. Bluetooth 4.0 - yet another feature that I have never had on a sub $1000 gaming laptop. Great feature to have!
7. Speakers with subwoofer. Sound is great #as far as laptop speakers go#, no distortion or does not sound tinny.
Now on to the cons.
1. Gets very hot when gaming #graphic intensive games# - you must always use a cooling pad or it will get unbearably hot.
2. Fingerprints are attracted to the top and the keyboard, etc. Again, if you are anyway freaked out by smudges you must always carry a cleaning cloth with you.
3. Hard drive slow. Not a huge deal but the hybrid drive is only 5400 RPM. I would upgrade if possible to a full SSD.
4. Memory - only comes with 8GB of memory. Again not a huge deal but I would upgrade to the max 16GB in the future.
5. Most upgradeable items are not easily upgradeable including the battery which is built into the laptop. You may try to upgrade hard drive, memory or battery but your warranty may be voided if you try to open the laptop. Do at your own risk.
In summary, this is a wonderful buy for a mid range gaming laptop #with touch). If you invest in a chill pad and can deal with excessive fingerprints while being able to play GTA5 and BF4 as intended, then this is the gaming laptop for you!

Reliability is an issue

Shortly after the 1 year warranty expired, we started having problems with peripherals connections (USB, head sets), and then the hard drive crashed. So much for the top rating from Consumer Reports. Finally had to order a replacement from another company.

I purchased this computer to be a portable work computer to run AutoCad. The computer is very sturdy and while there is no internal disc drive, it does come with an external DVD drive for free. (One less thing internally to break) Its also lightning fast at startup, runs AutoCad 2015 smoothly, and can multitask very well. The only complaints I have are, first, the battery life is short, and second, playing a game while the computer is charging tends to make it heat up. Besides that, this computer is an excellent choice for a work/gaming machine.

This is a great laptop. I use it for gaming and AutoCad products. It has been able to play any game that i have tried on it. NVIDIA GeForce Experience came pre-installed on it which will optimize your games for you. It also has ShadowPlay built into it which will let you record games without extra software. The all black with red keyboard is a very nice touch. It is a pretty fast computer. I am very glad i went with this laptop over the others i was looking at.

i am a second life player and i bought this computer specifically to be used for that game. i have been using the computer for more than a month and so far so good, it works perfectly and i dont crash anymore. there was an initial problem because the antivirus program that comes installed in the computer was not good enough and as soon as i opened the web page for second life a bug tried to get into my computer, the computer itself gave me a phone number from the windows company to call to fix the problem, i did and they fixed it and installed a good antivirus program, i had to pay for all that though. Other than that the computer is running smooth and perfectly without any problem. but as i said i only use the computer for that game: second life.

The left hinge on my Y50 failed after 6 months. These are notorious for left hinge failure. When the hinge let go it cracked the screen as well. Lenovo did repair it under warranty after waiting 3 weeks for parts, but returned it with a non functional camera and touch screen. Then the left hinge failed again after a month of use. It turns out that the hinges are basically glued the the thin plastic frame behind the screen. But Lenovo support gets a big thumbs up for sending me a brand new Y700 as a replacement.

Slower than expected, short battery life, very hot

The IPS display is nice, though not as bright as I'd like. The battery only lasts a couple of hours which is to be expected from a gaming laptop as is the high amount of heat you'll feel on the keyboard while gaming. Sadly, Windows 10 is very slow for me and I ended up going back to 8.1, which was a huge performance boost. I've read a LOT of articles talking about the hinge being faulty and breaking because it's cheap plastic there, so I'm a bit worried. The saving grace is the styling and video card. It's played most everything I've thrown at it.

Screen flickers and dies randomly. I contacted Lenovo support to help me out with the screen because I truly liked that laptop. It ran very well, and the sound system was amazing. I didn't like the laptop keyboard because the "shift" key was smaller. Lenovo support uninstalled and re-downloaded all the display drivers, but it started flickering the next day. This is my first and last time buying a Lenovo laptop. The only problem now consists inside the laptop, and I refuse to be benched and moved around. Disappointed that a $800+ laptop would have problems with the screen. It should already be top of the line. Also disappointed that I'm not the only one with this screen problem. As you can tell, I'm very, very disappointed.

Great Gaming Laptop!

I bought this laptop on October 2015. My overall experience with the laptop after 1 year was great so far! I was able to do some gaming and a lot of my basic tasks without any issues! The only problem I have with it is the 5400 RPM hard drive, which is unacceptable to have in a computer around 2015. I am planning to upgrade my hard drive to an SSD and upgrade my ram from 8 to 16 GB of ram, then this will be the perfect gaming laptop for me. 5 stars for the Lenovo Y50

It is well equipped with high end laptop with an amazing 4k screen and JBL speakers and they are loud. I was expecting a much powerful graphics card but GTX 960m is I quess a good enough card for this price.
