    Beautiful adaptation

A film that could have been a disaster (Russell Crowe singing? Please...) instead turns out to be a faithful, moving adaptation of a- lets be honest here- mediocre Broadway (actually, West End) musical. Too many close ups? Yes, in the theatre. But on a home-size screen those same close-ups help amplify the impact of the actors' work, and are not nearly as obvious/obtrusive as they were in the theatre. And while individual scenes and songs may be somewhat facile and cliched the cumulative effect is powerful, emotional, and ultimately overwhelming. A great musical? Not really. A great film musical? Quite possibly.

Great stage play made into a movie

The stage play is fantastic and the filmmakers really did make quite a fantastic effort in translating it from stage to screen. It has all the elements of the story without the over exaggeration (as required when you're on stage). the close ups, the songs, the choreography was all very very well done. It really shows how much effort is put into this movie. Sorry Russell Crowe, you are a great actor, but your singing voice is pretty harsh. (not that mine is even close to be at Russell Crowe's level). The acting part is obviously as good as Russell Crowe always is. Just not the singing.

The only way to review this musical version of Les Misarables is to compare it to the Hugo book, the stage musical, or the 1998 non-musical film starring Liam Neeson. I choose to compare it ot the latter. I would love to give this one 5 stars, but it has two fairly graphic sexual instances. Both are quick, but neither is necessary, and both kind of ruin the moment. I prefer the opening scene in the Liam Neeson film over this one, but this one's ending scene, which I refer to as "The great cloud of witnesses", is moving and powerful. Russell Crowe is serviceable in his role, but he isn't Geoffrey Rush.

    Les Miserables Lives On

This 2012 film version is a musical/romance adaptation of the 1862 French novel by Victor Hugo. Starring a great cast, with Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, and Anne Hathaway, who sing all their own songs, this classic story of a prisoner who finally receives parole after 19 years for stealing a loaf of bread, but is still dogged relentlessly by a ruthless police man. Justice and mercy are the plot points in this character drama of 19th century life, love, loss and redemption.

This story has been around for over 150 years, showing how incredibly timeless it is. The Musical adaptation of Victor Hugo's novel has been one of the most popular of all time. Now it is portrayed on film! Hugh Jackman is incredible in his portrayal of Jean Valjean! While the film will never live up to the beauty of the book, this is one that I'm proud to have in my personal movie collection.

The vocal performances and visuals are phenomenal. The screen adaptation and acting are flawless. If you have never watched a "musical" or "opera" before, you must see this epic movie. If you love musicals and opera, you owe it to yourself to not miss this one. It is a dream immersion which will give you much to consider, be amazed at, and remember always. Own it, see it, recommend it, share it, and give it!

Love the live play, but the movie wasn't what I expected. Kind of on the slow side and Hugh Jackman does not quite match the singing type role.

Les Miserables has always been my favorite stage musical because of the story and fantastic music and singing. The movie is fantastic. The story along with the music and singing. It is so emotional to see and watch no matter how many times you watch it. Anne Hathaway's "I Dreamed a Dream" is incredible and I will never be able to hear another version of this song. It was like she was really living the "hell" she was portraying. A must see movie.

Send to prison for stealing a loaf of bread for his family, Hugh Jackman gets a second chance at being a good man and a hero. His freedom and life are constantly challenged by a police officer who cannot see beyond the law. Told with raw emotion and beautiful singing, set against the backdrop of the French Revolution, the musical is the best adaptation to date.

Despite what you may have heard, on't be afraid to like this film. If you have seen even a snippet of the film and thought - hmmm, that seems interesting, then you will likely love this film. Cinematically it is truly amazing. The performances are a wonder to behold, especially from the many people who may have never imagined ever performing in such a film.

I don't often like movie musical versions of stage musicals but this one is top notch! I knew Hugh Jackman would be awesome and I was impressed with most of the other performances. Russell Crowe's vocal performance did not come close to being comparable to the greats who have played Javert on the stage but his portrayal of the character grew on me. Cinematically speaking it was breathtaking.

This movie is based on the Broadway play and does a great job of bringing it to the masses. The best part of the movie is being able to see the actors and settings up close and personal. In addition, the filming of the actors singing live (not lip-syncing to a soundtrack) adds a great touch... although the singing is definitely not as good as the actors in the Broadway play. Definitely worth seeing, though!

I love musicals a bit, but when I heard Hugh Jackman sing I was amazed. I grew up watching him as Wolverine in the X-men movies. When I heard him sing I couldn’t believe he was the same man playing one of my favorite Marvel characters. Russel Crowe’s performance also stunned me since I love his movie Gladiator. The story is heartbreaking, but great.

Well worth the money. Classic movie! Saw Les Miserables twice in the theater, and liked it so much, I decided to buy it on Blue Ray. Came with a digital copy as well so I can watch it on my computer. I was familiar with the play version of Les Miserables, but the movie version far exceeded my expectations. I can watch this movie over and over, and still enjoy it! Highly recommend to others.

If you love musicals then this movie is for you. However if you hate everything being put to music then you will dislike this movie. Every single phrase and spoken line is sung and put to music. This is a great movie for musical lovers but those who are not particularly fond of musicals will not like this movie.

Have seen this on stage as a musical in the past and assumed that the movie would be adapted as just that, a movie. Great musical performances by Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, and Anne Hathaway, who I didn't realize all could sing as well as they did. If you know that it is just like the on-stage musical, you will really enjoy it. If you are expecting any acting with dialogue, you might be disappointed. It's a refreshing change from other movies if you know what's coming.

If you are a fan of the Westend & Broadway musical, you will enjoy this film. Although the vocal abilities of the Hollywood actors aren’t at the level of the Broadway or London’s stars, they sufficiently get the job done. Singing well beloved lyrics of Boublil to Schonberg’s epic music, this screen adaptation will transport you to 19th century France.

I've seen the show quite a few times. This is my favorite all time musical and I wasn't sure what to expect from the movie. I cried and I laughed. They did a wonderful job. I was NOT impressed by Hugh Jackman or Russell Crowe. Eddie Redmayne was wonderful and so were the women. I got used to Hugh Jackman's voice, but even as he was committing suicide, Crowe had no emotion.
