Everything You Need to Know About This Dryer

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I just want to say that I made a best buy account just to write this review in hopes that it helps someone else who is considering or has already bought and is having difficulty with this dryer. I read hundreds of reviews and discussion threads on pros, cons, and troubleshooting on this dryer unit and it's matching washer. These units aren't by any means cheap, but they are the only option for small or ventless spaces, just short of taking your laundry to the laundromat. The main problem I will address in this review is hooking the dryer up to a household drain. First off, I need to say that the most important thing you could ever do is follow the instructions. Look at the manual and the laminated handout for simple instructions on how to install and care for your units. So, let's get to the main issue. Hooking up your unit to the household drain. Whether you're installing it yourself or having someone install it for your. Be sure it's all hooked up right before you use it and before the installer leaves, as this will save you a few headaches and exchanges. *Before we get into this, please be aware this dryer is a condenser dryer. It draws moisture from the clothing through the air, then condenses the humidity into liquid (water). The condenser behind the panel in the front, bottom left of the unit. The condenser drains to the water reservoir, which can be removed from the front top left. We are disconnecting the reservoir completely, bypassing it and draining to a household drain. If you are using the reservoir, then it must be emptied after each cycle. *Look at the back of your unit. you will see a vent-like structure to the bottom left corner. Immediately to the right of this, there is a black tube, bent upward. This tube connects to a plastic hole. LEAVE THIS ALONE. Do not touch this and do not let the installer remove the tube or discard it. *Page 21 of Manual: Now look to the far right of the back of the machine. You'll see a piece of foam, remove that. Underneath that foam you will find a black tube with a white "L" shaped plastic piece that is then connected to a black rubber tube going upward and into the machine. The white plastic piece is coming from the condenser. The black rubber tube going upward leads to the reservoir. Disconnect the white plastic piece from the black rubber tube that goes to the reservoir. Now take the black rubber tube that comes extra with your unit. Hook this up to the plastic "L" piece and put the other end to the household drain. Voila! Done. *Let me also tell you that mine was installed incorrectly and to the hole in the bottom, back, left of the dryer. I called LG and they couldn't even tell me what that was for! I looked up the parts assembly manual and it wasn't in there either. Though, on page 8 of installation of the manual, the hole is clearly, right there. I've done my own research and concluded that it's an extra hole used to drain the tank where the condenser sits for when the unit is being maintained. This must remain plugged up as the unit comes from the warehouse, otherwise it will leak everywhere. Caring for your unit (Page 20 of Manual): because this is a condenser dryer, you MUST clean your condenser. The manual suggests every few months. I have a dog that sheds a lot, so I expect I will do this more often. Anyway, before using your unit, check out your condenser so that you know how to remove and clean it later (basically you take it out and rinse it off). Note that once you use the unit, there will be water in the tank that holds the condenser, so lay a towel down. Using your unit: This is a compact dryer, so obviously you can do laundry loads the same size as you would with a traditional dryer that is probably 2x the size of this unit. Common sense, smaller dryer, smaller loads. The larger the load and the fuller the drum, of course it's going to take longer to dry. Do appropriate sized laundry loads. I've done this and it takes 20 minutes to dry. My clothes come out toasty warm and very dry. I think that covers the majority of problems here. I am very happy with my purchase. Even for the price, having the units fit perfectly into my designated laundry space was worth it. Great option for those with limited space or no options to vent.

Broke down after less than a year

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

My review is not just for the dryer, but also for Geek Squad's way of handling my extended warranty coverage (for an additional 2 years). The dryer broke down in the middle of a load by just beeping and turning off. After restarting the dryer, the error message showed a code, indicating it was in need of a new motherboard. I contacted Geek Squad first, via the store. They sent me around from one employee to the next checking computers and the like to get a copy of my receipt printed. They then sent me home and told me just to call Geek Squad. I did. After about 30 minutes of being on hold and be transferred, I was told that their computers were down and they couldn't help me and to call back in a couple of hours. If that's the case, why couldn't they just take my information and input it when they were up again? Anyways. I tried my other option, scheduling an appointment myself via their website--also down. Finally got hold of them the next day, and was able to make an appointment for about 3 weeks later. The part they needed to fix the dryer, which is supposedly why it took so long to get an appointment, took just 2-3 business days to arrive at my door. Monday, the day of my appointment, only one man showed up and was unable to move the washer and dryer from the closet in which they are stacked and had to wait for another guy to show up and help him. This took almost an hour. Missed the call when the man called up after waiting for his partner to arrive and got a voicemail saying that they had already made another appointment to come Friday and fix it. Meanwhile the guy left the washer and dryer balancing on the edge of the drip pan and leaning into the metal edge of the closet. It is now scratched on the side (eye level) and the drip pan has been bent out in such a way that I'm not sure it's usable. After calling best buy and going through a 2 hour process on the phone, they let us know that they may have to give us a new washer/dryer set because they're not sure they can fix ours. Ours was in the wild cherry red color, which is more expensive and they no longer make. So instead they're going to possibly replace ours for lesser value white ones. I'm beyond fed up. It's been a month of not being able to wash clothes at home, which is just flat out ridiculous. While the dryer was working, we loved it. Large capacity, much faster and more efficient than our traditional stacked unit. And quieter. Though, when we first got it, it was extremely quiet. After a month or so, it got noisier and stayed that level, though still fairly quiet. Irritated it didn't even take a year for it die on us. Be sure to get the extended warranty on this though! So glad we did. Be prepared for a lot of headache on Best Buy's part, though.

This machine performs very well, but be aware that it is a ductless unit that passes water-filled air through a condenser and from there the extracted water flows into a built-in tank that must be manually emptied. HOWEVER, if you are fortunate enough to have a drain conveniently located, the water can be emptied directly into the drain, bypassing the tank. This machine does NOT require a separately-purchased stacking unit. The ONLY accessory needed for successful installation is the power cord. Since the machine is engineered to operate without an air duct, it is especially appropriate for installation in small apartments or condos that lack regular laundry hook-ups.

I have limited space in my condo. This dryer fit the space I have available. I didn't expect to have so many features in a machine this size. I love my new dryer. I read many reviews about these type of dryers and was a little skeptical, but this machine drys everything I have put in it so far. I have yet to dry jeans or towel though.

This dryer was a big surprise to me. It does not use a vent. It dries the clothes at a cooler temperature and removes the extra water with a condensing drain hose. The clothes have a longer life as they are not over heated. It's very unique and new. It's beautiful and has lots of room inside-- it's big! I love this dryer and the washer. The clothes come out clean and dry. And, if you want more drying time there is a setting for that. Both the dryer and the washer are the best and they both have happy songs! I love doing my wash now, the machines are a joy to use.

The new washer and dryer arrived 2 days ago that my husband and I ordered 6 weeks and 5 days ago. Were we happy to see it! The new dryer is smaller than the old one, but it holds almost as much. Yesterday I dried 6 loads of laundry in it, including some large items -- queen sized bedpad, duvet covers, and sheets, as well as towels and clothes. Things took a while to dry -- over an hour in some cases -- but, since I was home anyway, rather than hanging around a laundromat, the dryng time didn't really matter. The dryer's controls are easy to use, and the lint filter is especially tidy. The little song that plays when the laundry is done differs from any other appliance's pinging. I can't comment on the water reservoir feature, because my dryer is hooked up to drain the extracted water directly.

I have had this dryer for 1 month, and it works well for small loads. I hooked the hose up to our drain and have not had any water accumulate in the reservoir tray. I also empty the lint between each load. The one con is that some loads take a long time to fully dry.

This non-vented (European style) apartment size dryer was not really what I wanted, because I knew that the drying times would be longer than with a conventional vented dryer. This turned out to be true but not so much as I had expected. The noise level is not as impressive for its quiet as that of the companion washer, but it is acceptable. There is the nice feature of a flat drying rack that is easily removed for tumble drying.

This is a condensing dry (no outside vent and no bucket to collect lint/moisture). This unit does a great job, gets the job done quickly and the clothes come out nice, it's rare that I touch anything up with an iron. It's quiet and easy to use - was easy to install - unpack, put in spot, connect and ready. I use the moisture collection reservoir but it can be connected to a drain for even easier operation.

Just purchased this recently, but so far, so good. First condenser dryer but seems to work really well. Our home has small doorways so we were limited to what we could buy. We already had the companion washer so got this as well and we are happy.

I had to buy a small washer and dryer due to doorway width restrictions in the 1937 built home. I am very pleased with this 24 inch model, although it was a little bit pricey. I understand why the smaller units are more expensive than the standard sizes, as fewer people need the smaller units, so it is simple supply and demand.

Great little dryer but a caveat or two

We purchased this and the matching washer in Sept. of '13 and immediately fell in love with both units. Now, almost a year later, the washer seems bulletproof and I can see still continues to have very high ratings. We are very pleased with the washer in every regard. Not only cleans everything with extreme economy but spins them almost dry. Our water consumption is much lower now thanks to front load. As to the dryer, we have been running it without vent and using the drainage hookup available in the laundry alcove. Everything was smooth running up until mid-June of this year ('14). I found the unit shut down and unable to heat in mid-cycle of drying towels. I could not get any warming/heat cycle to produce heat and after 3 minutes or so the unit would beep and throw a te3 code and shut off. Manual Cool air still worked so we have been able to wash and hang dry on racks and then soften/fluff the items with Manual Cool cycle. During the last 2 months I have been visited 3 separate times by the same service technician, a great guy, always friendly and affable and wanting to fix the dryer issue. The fact it has taken 2 months to fix my dryer does not mean the company or the tech were not trying. Once we decided amongst ourselves that a 2 man service team would not be necessary (more difficult to schedule and therefore takes longer overall for an appt.), we began to make progress. A 2 man team would ordinarily be needed to handle my dryer since it needs to be removed from a tight alcove with a lifting strap while stacked/attached at the back to the washer (no front stack kit for the 24"). We decided to work on it in place and used step stools for access and some leaning props for the stack unit when needed. Anyway, along the way a new thermistor was ordered and shipped to me which proved faulty right out of the bag. Another thermistor was shipped to my tech at his UPS store so he could verify it's quality before making another potentially useless visit. That was installed and still no heat. So a new Control PCB panel was ordered and shipped straight to me and that was installed as well. Voila! The heating element came back to life. In between all of these visits were both my tech's and our own vacations, which added at least 2 weeks to the overall downtime of the unit. Happy to report today my dryer is back in service and I have learned the hard way about the very limited usefulness of LG information supplied in their error codes, but also quite a bit about the dryer's design/construction. I also learned on the first visit from my tech a little secret when all else fails to produce heat. There is a reset button to the 220 line on the inside back panel. If you replace all parts concerned with the heating process (mine still had several more to go and more weeks of appt. scheduling) and still no heating, see if the reset was tripped by something along the way. It just may be an easy fix for some. It's a shame I had to lose 2 months of this dryer's otherwise excellent performance as it really does a great job with every cycle it offers and also handles everything we throw at it. I will still keep a close eye though on the towel or other heavy loads my wife puts in there and just what cycle choices she makes, just in case. If my 220 line does ever trip the protection switch I'll know just what to do.

I received the washer and dryer today and had it installed in my condo. When i ran my first load of laundry i noticed that the washer and dryer both made a rattling noise coming from the left sides of the unit. The washer rattle is soft, but the dryer rattle is a little louder. Again when i place my hand on the side of the unit the rattle stops but when i let go it starts up again. Other than the rattle it's extremely soft. As for the ventless drying, the cotton preset runs for 150 minutes, but after checking at the 50 minute mark the towels were pretty much dry with a little steam on them. I'm not sure why the sensor didn't adjust, but for now on I dry my clothes on the quick dry setting which is only 50 minutes and is sufficient. After being a little skeptical on the drying time compared to regular dryers i'm completely satisfied with this ventless dryer. Wish it didn't make the rattling noise.

The LG dryer works great, easy to use and controls. The blue light you can have on looks pretty cool. Clothes come out fresh (combined with LG compact washer). The unit looks and works great. Two things to be aware of: 1) The stacking kit they suggest you buy in store only fits the full size washer set, so you won't need it. There is a stacking kit that already comes with the items. 2) Be sure the installers connect the drain hose from the dryer (yes the dryer). Since this is a ventless washer, the water from the clothes is pulled off and is either stored in a water contain you need to drain every 3 or 4 loads or it can be installed with a drain hose that will to the same drain pipe as your washer. My installers didn't do this and I have not yet got them to come back out and do it. The water container is kind of bulky to take out and take to a nearby sink to dump... so get them to hook up the drainage hose. Outside of that, the dryer works great and when they get that hose installed it will be even better.
