Lifeforce (1985) - 4k UHD Review

The Good: Image quality looks great. I've never bought the previous bluray or the steelbook editions from Scream Factory, but on its own, the quality on this 3-disc set is amazing. The case is made of black plastic, but is thankfully not one of those "eco" style cases. Not sure how limited it is, but the copy I bought close to launch was shrink-wrapped and had a slipcover.
The Bad:
The shortened/edited/cutdown "US Theatrical Cut" is presented on two discs, with one being a 4K UHD and the other a bluray. The longer (by about 15 minutes!) "International" cut is available on the third disc in this set, but it's only a regular bluray. The version fans of Tobe Hooper's cult film would most want is not on a real 4K disc!
There is also an issue of a missing feature, that was present on previous releases. The "Making of Lifeforce Vintage Featurette" (not to be confused with the "Cannon Fodder:Making of Lifeforce" featurette exclusive to UK's Arrow label) was a fun look at the making of process of the movie.

For spooky season I was saving the recent Tobe Hooper 4K releases for the month of October. So just in the last few weeks i watched the new The Funhouse and Poltergeist releases and ended things with finally watching Hooper's Lifeforce 4K release. The move itself is very cheesy in a good way.Just a fun but expensive(for its time) B movie.I also liked the fact it was a British setting.Gave a real Hammer Horror vibe. The director's cut is the better version but certainly the theatrical cut is worth a watch especially since that this is the one on the 4K disk. Some nice interviews ported over from the previous release including some new interviews.Shame that the two making of features were dropped though on this release. Not sure why.
Certainly worth checking out.

A superb edition! The best to date for this 1985 Sci-Fi thriller featuring one of the best-looking female villain leads of all time, Mathilda May in all her nude glory.
The 4K here is stunning with improved sound overall.
This is the new 2021 4K scan of the original negative for the Theatrical version.
You get that on the 4K and Blu-ray here in this set.
The third Blu-ray is the Director's Edition with more footage. It looks good here on the Blu-ray, but it is the same version that was released with the LIFEFORCE Steelbook awhile back. I have that version as well.
Different artwork on this 4K 3 disc set throughout.
The Director's Edition does not have the 4K scan.
Shame that was not done as well. There are some minor black specks on the film in that version.
Still looks good and sounds good, but could have been better if on the 4K disc also.
There is no making of LIFEFORCE on this or the Steelbook version Blu-ray sets.
Pretty much everything else is here as far as features.

A movie that I've come to like over the years, despite it's outrageous storyline. Yes, it's ridiculous but never boring with some eye popping visuals. Never taking it too seriously, you just go with it and enjoy this flick for what it is, because It's the only way to watch it .
The picture quality is fabulous. The 4K transfer is rendered quite nicely here. The audio doesn't disappoint either. Clear dialogue and a good amount of low-end sound effects makes this 4K disc a worthy upgrade.

Underrated 80s gem!

An underrated gem from the 80s. The only reason I'm giving this 4 stars instead of 5... the Directors cut is only on blu ray in 1080.
While the theatrical cut looks superb in 4k, anyone that loves this movie would likely be wanting the directors cut as its the superior version. However, at 1080p, it still looks really good and worth owning.

The 4k transfer makes everything really pop on screen. The movie is outdated and not the best of special effects. If you have not seen this movie before, you probably won't be too crazy for it. This is more of a nostalgic thing, but if u remember it from your younger days and liked it - then it has never looked better.

One of my guilty pleasures. I keep upgrading and that’s okay. Such a hidden treasure and so well done. I am glad it is getting the kind of release and recognition that it deserves. I have had this movie in many formats over the years and it is worth it every time. Go ahead, you deserve it.

Lifeforce on 4K Ultra HD finally! My only complaint is that Shout (Scream) Factory doesn't give you a Digital download on any of their movies!!! They need to get the licensing from the original Studio and add Digital downloads for Vudu or any movie streaming app!

When I saw this movie was coming out in 4k I knew I had to get this 4k version of the movie. I already had the Scream Factory Blu-ray and the Blu-ray Steelbook. My only disappointment was the directors cut was only on the Blu-ray while the theatrical was the one on 4k

Crazy film. Deserves its cult following. Great 4k transfer of the theatrical cut, but for some reason they didn’t do 4k for the much superior director’s cut.
