For first-time setup, you may need to place the extender closer to the router. After you’ve set up your extender, you can unplug it and move it to the final location. Also, it works with any wireless router including your service provider's router.

However, thick walls, metal objects, appliances, and mirrors can cause signal interferences that will affect the overall coverage that it can provide. To fully maximize its potential, we recommend taking advantage of its Spot Finder Technology feature to guide you where to properly relocate the device for an optimal performance. Basically, if you network is called "homewifi"; this extender will create a new network called "homewifi.ext". You have to be signed into one or the other; not both. If you have wifi devices you move through your home like I do, this helps absolutely none. I returned this product.
