Works fine, but not for the money

For the same price, models with far higher spec can be bought for the same or less, ie the Netgear AC models are at least 3 times faster with the same full house coverage. My mistake for not looking around

    All-Around Best Option

When this thing first came out it was not ready and I started to have doubts. Since then Luma has been constantly updating the routers and apps with features and stability. Luma is now awesome. I have so much control over the network. I have a feeling that my kids' grades are going to be much better come January.

First off was a bear to get setup going! but I did get it. Then after setup. I name my WiFi network with password. But Luma gave my wifi name as nil? with no password to log on anyone could of got on it. Called support waited 30 minutes then went to call back two hours no call back. Got on chat with a guy told him what problem was he said reboot Luma. I told him I would lose him because I was on WiFi. he said no problem he would be there when I got back. But I lost him. He had my phone number to call me back. Well, 45 minutes now no call back? Support really is bad. Also no way to forward port to my WiFi cameras. I will be bring back tomorrow. I will give one more day for support. But I'm not holding my breath. I normally don't leave many reviews. Support is very bad. I don't know about reviews with good support.

Bought it yesterday, set it up last night, enjoying WiFi coverage throughout my entire house plus patio areas today. This was never possible with previous routers.

    Great Product, Poor Customer Support

I wanted to love this item but the poor customer support kills it. Everyone is very nice but that doesn't change the fact that hold times are in excess of 2-3 hours (seriously) and when problems don't get resolved on the first try you're fighting to get their attention again even with a case number.

I bought this product for my parents' house. They had dead spots in several rooms but not any more! I wanted to see if my mom could handle the set up. I would have stepped in of course but she finished before I even realized she started!

I wanted to extend my WiFi range to the back part of my house. I found the signal and upload speeds were worse than the Nighthawk router I bought several years ago. Each router only has one Out port which makes adding my security system, Sonos and camera hubs difficult.

Setup was very easy, performance is horrible. LTE on my phone screams compared to when I'm on wifi via Luma. If you want one I'll sell you mine much cheaper than what they charge.

There are a ton of features offered by Luma that I had no idea I needed. The ability to control my network remotely has made life much easier for me and my wife. I'm thinking of purchasing more as Christmas presents.

Functionality is going up fast! Lets me pause my roommates when they are late on rent, see the devices on my network, and shows when they were last connected. Look forward to seeing what they plan to keep adding.

    Not ready for prime time

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I wanted to like Luma. I really did. I waited with anticipation and I finally received it and what a disappointment. First of all the app setup tells you to look for various stages of the LED light to light up, but it never did. Then when the Luma is connected there are no active lights on the device to let you know its on and working. The only way to determine that is to look at the app. Then the app constantly shows the Luma offline. REALLY? I shouldn't have to reboot the device to get it back online. This has happened 3 times so far. Now when you setup the Luma you're limited to names that are pre-selected and you check a radio button for which one you want. You have the ability to edit it later on typing anything you want but even after you hit save the next time you check the app it goes back to the name you used when you originally set it up. REALLY? This router doesn't support basic functions that every other vendor on the market supports. These are the features you would normally find but aren't supported with the Luma: 1) Bridge Mode 2) Static IP address 3) Port Forwarding 4) Selecting your own internal IP address range 5) DMZ These are basic features that you would find in a $50 router, but you won't find it here. Lastly, the range of each device isn't that great. Maybe Luma figures people will buy the 3 pack and that would account for the limited range, but that's a possible poor excuse. While Luma said you can connect each luma via Ethernet I don't think that's the case. I'm not sure that's working and I think they're actually connecting via wifi which then diminishes your overall wifi speeds. With each wifi hop from device to device you're using part of your available bandwidth. Maybe over time Luma will get better as they update their firmware but it is not ready for prime time. I suggest holding off 6 months and then seeing what features are available. By that time traditional companies like Netgear, Dlink, Linksys would all have their own mesh. Oh, supposedly Luma support MU-MIMO, but according to the review on SmallNetBuilder it doesn't have the hardware to support it. According to that website the Eero has better hardware and more memory. I also have an Eero and it is leaps and bounds better. Not perfect but so much better

    Incredibly disappointed

Purchased 7/7. Downloaded app and went thru setup. It was fairly simple and showed that I had successfully setup. The Luma app showed a 108mbps download speed. 2 Lumas upstairs and 1 down. However, I walked around house with iPhone using a speed test app. The actual speed was anywhere from 8-40 Mbps. The only place 100 Mbps was achieved was 1 foot from luma hooked to cable modem. 10 ft away in same room was closer to 30. Came home today downstairs unit was disconnected. It won't reconnect. My iPhone constantly drops or won't connect. My apple airport that was replaced had better coverage and was more consistent. I have reached out to luma and update reviews if problems resolved. Otherwise I'll return immediately and give Eero a try. This product is not as advertised and isn't ready for consumer.

    Not Usable today

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

The Luma concept is a fantastic idea. It grabbed my attention right away when they were crowd funding. fast, simple wifi. Sounds great but if you want to do very simple tasks like add an additional luma (4-6) you will literally want to throw them on the floor. Constantly errors trying to add them. While their customer support agents are very friendly, they know little technical information and the 4 times I have had to contact them for issues, they keep promising an app update to allow for features promised on the box but week after week goes by and no update. I would literally look to my old solution with multiple SSIDs and routers to do the same thing. Luma is something that isn't reality today. I would read reviews before buying and call them for yourselves to hear the app update should be here within a week tactic. CONS 1. Cannot Port Forward 2. Cannot use Comcast without using the router in bridge mode only 3. cannot add devices without headache 4. Cannot see what people are browsing as advertised 5. Speeds are nothing special whatsoever and constantly restricted by the mesh network. 6. Cannot use a switch off luma to use more hardwired devices 7. Cannot connect the lumas together via cat6 as there is a bug Save yourself the headache and stick with your solution or buy a cheaper solution that will out perform this new tech.

A lot cheaper than other mesh network systems. That's why I bought it. Setup was so so, one of the units in the box was a dud. Speeds are not impressive but some of that might be due to the modem

one of the largest wastes of money i have ever seen. this router system is complete trash, it took me over 2 hours to get the first luma setup because it kept showing an error message. over the next 2 weeks i tried to get the other 2 ap's setup but still nothing but problems and it would always red ring. lumas customer support is beyond bad considering they keep telling you they've never seen this problem before. best buy should stop selling this bad product.

Worked OK for a few months and worthless

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Luma worked great for about 8 months and I was very pleased, than about a week ago a new firmware was pushed out (2017.06.21-1) and some devises are now doping WiFi at random and will not reconnect unless I completely disable the WiFi and restart the device and I am constantly reboot the Luma (all three of them starting with the Hub first) several times a day. I called Luma support who advised it was a problem with my client devise and I asked the engineer how that could be if it was random and was happening to different devices at different times of days (mix of both Android and Apple phones and tables). Very very frustrating. I put up wireshark and a separate wifi spectrum Analyzer and see the WiFi Radio Bands dropping constantly and than quickly coming back up, because of this it is causing an IP conflict on the client devises which is why they are not reconnecting the Luma WiFi. At this point I am taking the Luma out of production and adding it to my every growing box of junk products and will be installing either the Eero or Google WiFi in hopes of a much better product experience. If you feel obligated to go with the Luma all I have to say is Good Luck and know that there are better options out there!

I bought this in store and it worked for a few minutes and then disconnected the network. Okay, I'll call tech support and I got Dave. He was nice seemed to know what he was doing and then tried solving the problem to no avail. The issue was my phone, not being an iPhone but a android phone, then it was me trying to use an existing SSID. Then he finally told me what I previously had is better than the Luma (Linksys) and that I can't get the Luma to work so just return it to Best Buy. Wow, what tech support or lack thereof. So back it goes and I'll wait for a better mesh network in the Netgear Orb.

I have been extremely disappointed with my Lumas. I didn't buy them at Best Buy but wanted to give people here the heads up. It may eventually turn out to be a great product but they shipped it too early. The original marketing was great -- I was a super excited early adopter. But the product just doesn't work. I've had to troubleshoot with them four times now -- and things just don't seem to be getting any better. I'm sure they'll eventually get there but I'd wait until they've worked the bugs out.
