A GPS that's worth it!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've had a few GPS's before and I wasn't planning on getting a new one until a friend showed me this new smartGPS. I'm not usually the kind of person to buy a new product like, but after my friends recommendation and reading the reviews here I picked one up and the Best buy near my office. The first thing you notice is the large screen that works really nice, like an iphones screen. It makes it a lot easier to use the SmartGPS than other Garmins Ive had in the past. When you connect to a wifi SmartGPS downloads Yelp, Foursquare, weather, gas prices and police speed traps from the web. I use Yelp loads and SmartGPS makes driving to places you find in Yelp really easy. They also have a website where you can plan routes - like if you're going on a trip at the weekend. Anything you plan on the website appears right away on the smartGPS - its really cool! Cons are its a bit big and the case doesn't feel as nice as the more expensive units they had at best buy.

Fun, informative GPS
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I had been without a GPS for a couple of years now. There was nothing new to be honest. But recently I have been traveling again with a new job so needed a GPS to avoid being lost. Saw this at the Best Buy. Looked like it had some cool features like deals and gas prices so bought it a 2 days ago. It works well so far. I downloaded the user guide from their website and followed the instructions to set up. I had to connect to my home wifi but the device took over from then. After a few hours, I set out yesterday on a road trip around town. It worked very well. Showed me a deal for a cool coffee shop called City News. Saved me $5!! This place is now on my list for places for a hot drink. GPS works fine for directions and loved the new look here. Simple and useful information. Love it.

Great device with a few quirks
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Bought this a week ago as a replacement to my 5 year old Garmin. Nothing new in this tired category for a while so didn't see the need to fork out the money. The new features and the attractive presentation caught my eye at a local Best Buy. I had to set it up for my home wifi and my office wifi once. The tiles started filling up with useful information for around me. I added my home, office, gym, and a couple of friend's addresses. Seems like this helped the device download the right information because I always see the tiles light up with information from around me even after being away from wifi for a couple of days. Initially, I thought the screen was a bit busy but after a week, I actually like it and I always know the best rated restaurants and deals around me. I like the thought put into making information useful and easily available. Would recommend it if you are tired of the same old boring GPS. It does all that but in a neat new way.

Ok unit
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is an ok GPS unit. I really liked the map detail and big clear screen. The screen brightness is lacking. The battery life is non-existent. The directions are real nice and clear, much better than my Tomtom. There is almost no status information on the display, on my Tomtom there is current speed, time to destination, etc. With the Magellan, you only get to choose a single status, either speed, or time to destination, not all. I had to return it for two reasons. I can't navigate to a location on the map. On my Tomtom unit, I can browse the map, touch a point and navigate to it. I can't do this with the Magellan unit, even on the PC interface. Second, every time the unit comes on, there is a disclaimer that you have to press OK on. I'm not going to click OK every time I start my car.

This GPS helps make the daily drive interesting
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have a Nokia Lumia phone and love the screen icons on it. Hate to look around for the information when it could be right on the screen on its own. This is the only GPS I saw that has the Nokia like big icons with information from Yelp on them. Even has gas on it and i can easily see the gas around me. I am a bit unusual in trying out new things compared to my family. Sometimes i pay for it with products that need some more polish. This one is close to perfect. Some setup was needed but it worked on its own after that. Great for my long drives to Boston.

Modern and simple to use GPS
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Bought this on Friday for a weekend trip. After using it all weekend, I have to say that this device rocks. I connected the device to the wifi and it downloaded all Yelp and foursquare info. I also liked that it came with a free Android app. My wife used it to zap addresses to the device while driving so that we didn't have to touch the screen to enter long addresses. Saved a few bucks on gas as well. The way GPS should have been done for the past 2 years. Happy to see progress in this field.

Inferior product, terrible support
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. My unit stopped receiving satellite signal after 10 months. It began rebooting randomly at 9 months.I spent a week emailing Magellan support, receiving the same repetitive responses even though i answered all questions on my first reply. Magellan's responses weren't automated - they were worded differently each time. I soon recognized that the "Comcast-like" tactic was designed to discourage me from getting a replacement under warranty. After becoming more frustrated and direct with my responses after a week, I was finally moved on to a CS rep who arranged my replacement. From this point the replacement proceeded smoothly and I received a "refurbished" replacement in a few weeks. In the meantime I upgraded my computer OS to Windows 8.1, only to discover that the GPS is not compatible with 8.1 and therefore can not upgrade the maps. This is my third Magellan GPS, and will be the last. I bought a Garmin and never looked back It's more intuitive to use, is Windows 8.1 compatible, and takes a fraction of the time to update maps.

A pleasant surprise
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Had a few hundred dollars in gift cards over the past year. Decided to spend it on a camera, GPS and a few other trinkets at BestBuy. I didn't know that Magellan was still making GPS devices. I had a TomTom for 3 years but I stopped using it because of outdated maps and it made no sense to upgrade the maps at the price they wanted. I usually look for value but there is absolutely nothing new in GPS these days. The box and the features for this one seemed quite eye-catching so I looked it over and decided to buy it. After about three days of intensive use, I am quite happy with it. It shows cheap gas prices in a windows phone like tile. But it is better because it changes on its own so I don't have to touch it while driving. Love the deals from Yelp too! Only drawback I can see is the setup. It was a bit confusing to start with but downloading the user manual helped and now I know where to look for what. Overall, a solid device once you go through a little bit of initial confusion.

Think before buying Magellan
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this unit and it stopped receiving sat signals. I sent email, Called...no response. I finally got chat working and this is the conversation.... (Magellan Employee Name Removed) Magellan: Hello, *****.. Please allow me a moment while I review your question... Magellan: I am sorry for that inconvenience, nevertheless I am here to help you out and let me see what I can do for you today. May I have the serial number of your SmartGPS please? *****.: SN# 085--------------- Magellan: Thank you Magellan: Please turn on the GPS Magellan: From its main menu screen, tap the gear icon and tap General *****.: it's on *****.: ok Magellan: Please look for the Product Information Magellan: Under Product Information, what does it show on the Software version? ******: 1.10.0064 Magellan: Detailed Map version? ******: 50 Magellan: Thank you Magellan: Please go back and tap on the Location button ******.: ok Magellan: On "Set GPS Position", tap "GPS". If it's in "Manual", the GPS will not acquire satellite signals Magellan: Get a clear view of the sky then turn the GPS off for 10 seconds then turn it back on Magellan: After the GPS restarts, please go to the Map screen. The Current Location Indicator should be color Blue which means GPS signals are being received. Make sure you have a clear view of the sky *****: The indicator turns red and slowly blinks. And does not show position *****.: I have gone through this exercise over the past week. Same result Magellan: Since your SmartGPS is already updated with the latest software, the Content Manager will no longer provide you an option to download a software update. Magellan covers the warranty of your SmartGPS for one year from the date of its purchase. Magellan: For in-warranty replacements, a proof of purchase is required. Please email a copy of it at [email protected]. Magellan: Make sure the proof of purchase is sent as an attachment and it should be in PDF or JPG format. Magellan: Will there be anything else that I can help you with? *****: So you're saying the units has bricked itself *****.: So Magellan products only work for a year or so? Magellan: We're truly sorry for the inconvenience. At this point we cannot exactly pin point what has caused the issue. What we can do for you is to process a replacement order for your GPS ******: I found a reciept. Looks like it was 6/21/13 from Best Buy. ******.: Can I get it repaired? I like he unit but it just stopped receiving sat signals for some reason. Magellan: If it was purchased on June of last year, its warranty has expired last June of this year. Magellan doesn't repair/service products. The best option we can offer you is our Customer Loyalty Program (CLP) where you can trade in your SmartGPS for a brand new GPS unit at a discounted price. *****.: Bummer. Well That's fine. What can i get? and for what price? I would prefer the SmartGPS. Magellan: The available vehicle navigation units on this program are the RoadMate 2230T-LM and the RoadMate 5230T-LM. Magellan: The regular price of the RoadMate 2230T-LM is $139.99 while its discounted price through the CLP is only for $74.99. Shipping fee is $6.00. Magellan: The regular price of the RoadMate 5230T-LM is $159.99 while its discounted price is for $84.99 only. Magellan: Are you still there? *****: Hmm...Doesn’t seem like good customer care on Magellans part. Magellan RoadMate 5230T is just $10 less than Amazon counting shipping. I would even take a deal on a referb SmartGPS if you offered it. *****.: Not sure why that is not the case. Magellan: At the moment, these are the only vehicle navigation units offered on our CLP Magellan: Should you decide to purchase any of the offered GPS units on this program, please do not hesitate to call our phone support at 1-800-707-9971. Magellan: Is there anything else I can help you with? *****: Sadly I must decline. We prefer higher end models. Our business does a lot of driving. We have Magellan in our fleet and it looks like we will be switching from Magellan. *****.: Thank you for your time. Magellan: To check on the other RoadMate OneTouch units, please visit our website at www.magellangps.com Magellan: Should you require further assistance, feel free to chat with us again or you can view our extensive Self Help Knowledgebase and FAQs under the Support tab. Too much clutter on the screen.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Routing was good, But had to continually touch screen to remove all the ads for non essential items regarding my travel routes. Battery life when not plugged in to a 12v source was about 20 minutes. The supplied mobile mount is not compact. The unit itself is very heavy as compared to my old Garmin unit and much slower to pick up the satellites. I had an issue with a short in a wire to the unit and Magellan's customer service was next to non-existent. Rather than to deal with their customer service run around after 4 weeks, I returned the unit and replaced it with a new Garmin 2555LMT and saved money.

Better than a regular GPS
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Bought it a couple of days ago for a trip . I had read an article on it in USA Today and had a basic idea of what it would do. Turned out to be better. I planned my trip on the device and was surprised to find Yelp and Foursquare information for San Diego show up in the info tiles. Quite helpful wandering through an unfamiliar neighborhood. The GPS works well. Has all the features of a high end GPS. Loved the modern looking interface and the way gas prices were shown. Very happy with this purchase so far.

Great high-end GPS
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. After I was sick of dealing with my old Garmin with out of date maps I purchased this GPS today after reading a little about the new features of this device versus the standard GPS. Just as a standalone GPS this does gets the job done well, getting me and my kids from Point A to Point B. It took a bit longer than I would have expected to update the software, however. Despite that hiccup, I loved watching the tiles change giving me quick recommendations on where to eat in particular.

Fails at the important stuff
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I'm truly disappointed because I love the concept of an Andoid device with WiFi connectivity. If's decent to use. Voice is clear, directions are good. I haven't dialed a call using Bluetooth yet though. What I'm already having serious problems with are the maps. You cannot add a contact or location if the exact address didn't exist five years ago, which is apparently when Magellan last updated its database. I now have TWO addresses that I'm unable to enter. That greatly diminishes its usability. What good is a GPS if you can't enter your destination? The WiFi connectivity seems to work like a charm. Synching is effortless. But the bezel is unnecessarily wide. The screen is too glossy. It also is not intuitive to get around the menus. I'm coming to appreciate Garmin a lot more now. I will probably go back to Garmin in a few months. Magellan customer support is non-existent. And don't even ask me about the "anti-glare screen shields" I bought. I see now why Magellan is not an industry leader.

Incredible!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I started using a GPS on my phone, but as I increase the frequency of use my phone, wanted to be a phone and not a GPS. I decided to look for a new alternative and I decided for this new unit, and I have to say I love it. The Yelp integration is incredible and very useful, also the new app to communicate with my smartphone is better than I expected.

Love it! Great piece of Hardware!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I replaced my Garmin of 108,000 miles with the SmartGPS and glad I chose the Magellan. (Make sure to let the unit charge a little out of the box or it will not power up.) Now these units are $150 and the best buy on the market. It even lets me know what intersections have red light cameras. It finds addresses and cheap gas and a bunch of other stuff. I have gone about 12,000 miles with this unit and would buy another if mine were ripped off. Don't give it a second thought, this GPS rocks.

Broke in 8 mos support is terrible
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. After reviewing multiple GPS units I decided to buy the SmartGPS in December. After months of very limited use my unit stopped being able to locate a satellite or update through WiFi. I went to Magellan's website and reviewed their very limited FAQ to fix the problem and by limited it said turn it off and turn it back on. When this didn't work I contacted their support team who told me to do them same. When it didn't work again, they said they exhausted their troubleshooting and the unit needed replaced but only with a proof of purchase. Basically just threw $200 bucks down the drain with this product. Will be using a Garmin next time.

Avoid at all costs
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The app for the iPhone requires a huge amount of space, the unit is constantly rebooting in the car, and the screen is filled with all sorts of stuff you don't want. There is no reason to buy this. None.

Hummm, a lot bling, but a dud...
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Looks great on paper... Android built-in browser... Large glass screen (very breakable in a car if dropped between a seat), oversized bezel (it's like 7" with only a 5" screen, eats up your data plan with advertisements. I tried to like it, but couldn't, even after getting nearly for free with gift cards. Map data over a year old and no update available, worthless. The free app takes 4 hours to load the map data. Why can't someone just make a Google Maps device that works without a data connection? The weather option forces me to download 5 cities worth of forecasts, I only want one, and it's only a 5 day, waste, give me a weather overlay instead... Gas prices are nice, but not updated, restaurant ads keep loading and flashing up, burn up that data plan with worthless info. Going back today, after 2 hours, I gave up. NO BANG FOR THE BUCK, looks great from the box, but don't live up to it... Traffic info don't work in every city, sticking with my phone with Google Maps, very hard to switch after using it...

Unsupported product - WAIT!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this immediately because I travel all over New England for work. I looked forward to setting up the addresses on my laptop and sending them to the GPS. I also wanted to do the same with my Android. Neither functions work as advertised. There is no owners manual available. The support phone operators know nothing about the product. Foursquare and Yelp do not work after the first day (I did get a free movie from Foursquare/ Redbox, after that it never connects. I presume there is something that I am missing, but without a manual or support assistance, the gps works almost as well as my $99 Garmin.

Excellent value for the features but quit working.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was excited to get the new unit and ordered the backup camera unit as well. After everything was installed I was pleased with the GPS and back up camera. GPS seemed to take a long time to acquire satellite data at time and once in a while the camera would not switch on. I have had 2 units in the last month and a half. Both units just quit turning on. Could not find out why.
