Although it won awards, I found this movie to be slow and boring. It has a heartfelt story but just lacks excitement.

I walked into theaters to see this film without little to no expectations. Perhaps that colored the way I saw it. Regardless, this film produced one of the most emotional experiences I've ever had at a theater, let alone with a movie. Many will complain that little happens or that the film ends in an unsatisfying manner. I think this argument holds little water and, instead, shows that the viewer went in expecting something else.
And with that, avoid the trailers, avoid the criticism, avoid the awards talk and all that. Just let the film wash over you. Embrace the grief and let it define the you, the characters, and all you know for two hours.
You won't regret it.

This was such a moving film. Casey really captured the tortured soul and the supporting cast (Michelle, especially the scene where they run into each other years later) is also just a great. This is a gray, dreary setting and there is really no redeeming reason to visit Manchester by the looks of it. The end was touching. I highly recommend this film to those who appreciate good acting and film-making.

A heart breaking story about a man who has lost everything, much to his own fault. He is trying to cope with his loss by disassociating himself from his town and family. Every time he tries to get past his grief, someone or something always brings him back into it. Not even the second chance of raising his nephew works, but he is taking steps to recover.

Writer/director Kenneth Lonergan has made a searing, emotionally devastating (but often hilarious) film about living with, if not completely overcoming, tragedy. His marvelous script is crammed with his usual brilliantly realistic dialogue, and the sublime cast includes Casey Affleck, Lucas Hedges, Michelle Williams, Kyle Chandler, and veteran stage performers Stephen McKinley Henderson, Missy Yager, Quincy Tyler Bernstine, Heather Burns and even Matthew Broderick. Lonergan also gives himself one of the best (and funniest) director cameos since Hitchcock.

This movie will capture not only your interest but also challenge your intellectual and emotional beliefs about certain cultural dictates and beliefs. It is extremely well acted and finely balanced between subtlety and dramatic waves. I would definitely recommend this movie for some one who would have an open mind when viewing it.

Saw this at the movies. Definitely not a summer blockbuster type movie. Walked out feeling a little depressed but then talked about the movie with my wife and realized how good the acting and story was. Knew I wanted to re watch and was picked up on Black Friday. Good movie. Just bring box tissues along for the ride.

Were it not for Affleck, this movie wouldn't have made a mark in Hollywood. Even as far as the screenplay goes, it would not have the staying power without Affleck. This movie will stick with you for days, perhaps even weeks. It's a difficult film to watch for the tragedy of it. Fans of Hollywood endings need not apply here.

Great Performances

It is easy to understand why Casey Affleck won the Oscar for best performance for a male actor and Lucas Hedges was nominated for best supporting male actor. The antagonistic initial relationship between the two plays out as the fears and desires become known between the two which ultimately eases the relationship issues. While the performances are excellent, it is a very said, somewhat depressing film. The periodic insertion of the beautiful scenery tempers the continual sadness of the characters, almost a respite of sorts.

The story is depressing but with the acting/editing you do feel empathy and sympathy with the main character. The ending is what highlights the weakness in the main character's life decisions.
Must be seen with a chick to understand all the story bends and developments.

This Bluray comes with a regular DVD and a digital copy. It's not a happy story but it's not dull either. There are some comical moments but the acting is good overall. Casey Affleck is great, but my vote would've been Andrew Garfield for Hacksaw Ridge for Best Actor.
