Marantz name is solid.. good value for their lower end AV receiver. Not sure I can balance speakers.. ie.. alter volume level for each speaker . So far, cannot find way to do it.

I'm no audiophile, but I do appreciate a good sounding surround setup. My old Harmon/Kardon finally bit the dust, so I wanted something relatively decent without spending a ton. Marantz has a great reputation and I liked the simplistic appearance, so I purchased it. Setup was easy and the Audyssey calibration worked like a charm. I'm very impressed with the sound quality and power. You don't have to waste time trying to figure out all of the different setting. Just plug things in and select your input. Plus, the unit is tiny compared to most others. I highly recommend this receiver. In fact, I'm considering buying a second one to replace my Onkyo.

Dont pss up this avr because of power

So here's the deal. No steaming audio. If you want that then by another avr but if you don't care about streaming audio then this avr is amazing. A lot people will overlook this unit due to its lower RMS rating of 50 watts. Here's the truth. This is 50 watts of true power, meaning from 20hz to 20000hz full bandwith and at a very low thd rating. If you feel 50 watts is not enough then you have to double your power to 100 watts. If your at 80 watts you have to goto 160 watts. In order to have a 3db gain in audio you have to double power. So the 50 watts compared to a 80 watt denon or onkyo will have no effect on your speakers. This thing being half the size of an average avr has about 5 pounds more heft to it and I've always based part of my decision on weight.. This is truly a great receiver.

I have had this unit for about 2 weeks now. She has more than enough power for most applications and for the average room. I have Klipsch KG 4.5 for the front, KG3.2 for the rear and a custom built center along with 2 SVS BP-1000 subs. By its self, she did just fine pushing all 5 speakers and did so with more than enough guts. I have since added a Parasound HCA800 to run the front L/R speakers....to lighten the overall load on the unit. This one replaced a Pioneer 1123k. The Marantz, even on her own, was more dynamic, controlled the speakers better and just seemed to have more.....well balls vs the 1123k. And MUCH easier to use! The auto set up with the Marantz dose a much better job vs the Pioneer as well. The Marantz is a straight foward, very easy to set up and use unit.

I bought this receiver to replace my 8 yr old Onkyo TX SR805 THX receiver. It was on verge of extinction, it wouldn't no longer recognize input signals until 5 mins later, surround settings were eardrum piercing distortions and so on. I didn't want to spend money on shipping and repairs, so a new receiver was needed for a low-budget audiophile. I was skeptical of this receiver at first because of the power 50 watts per channel compared to the robust 130 watts per channel on the Onkyo. Anywho I am happy that I followed my gut feeling and purchased it. At first I considered new speakers, but with the wife limit button in place I vouched for the receiver. After hooking it up to my Def Tech 3.1 set-up (Pro Cinema 600) FL / C /FR, line level to Supercube I, I couldn't believe the nuance of my small system. The new depth from my tiny footprint speakers were beyond words and put out sound according to what you read about at the Def Tech website. Wow! I Highly recommend this AV Receiver!

After years of live sound knowledge (I thought) I've always known that speakers were more important to upgrade than the source. C/net still suggest the same. It's quite possible this info could be wrong. This reviver has brought life to speakers I thought needed replacing. The Audyssey MultEQ technology is fantastic! My center and surround speakers from a 15 year old Onkyo HTIB have new life. With a not so good speaker setup this receiver has astounded me. One thing I knew going in was not to get caught up in a power (wattage) rating of an audio product. Most companies over rate or alter these specs depending on frequency or what gives them the larger number. This receiver is rated at 50 watts per channel and I can tell you that the receiver it replaced witch was rated at more than twice the wattage blows it out of the water. Both in quality of sound and volume. I am very happy with this AVR and I'm confidant you will be too.

I switched from an Onkyo 80 watt receiver to this Marantz 1403 and don't regret my decision at all. I am surprised by the difference in sound, especially from the center speaker. With the Onkyo TX-NR313 the center channel always had a hollow sound but now with the Marantz the hollow sound is gone and I hear nice smooth sound with a nice warm tone to it. I use Polk towers for fronts and a Polk center Channel with Bose in the back. The separation is incredible compared to what I had before. I have a very simple system, a 60" Plasma, a cable box with a DVR and a DVD player so I don't have a need for all the stuff like internet connections and a million other things they offer these days and it's so nice to still be able to get terrific sound without having to pay for a bunch of things I will never use. I use this receiver for video only so I can't comment on how it is for music but as far as TV goes it is perfect for me. I give this receiver 5 stars because it is perfect for my simple needs. If you want something with all the newest bells and whistles this would not be the product for you but if your looking for a nice looking, great sounding quality 50 watt 5.1 surround receiver I would not hesitate to recommend it. I would also encourage you to check the warranties of other brands compared to Marantz.

    Excelent equipment

The equipment is very good, slim, easy to install with an on screen step by step setup. I use it with an Yamaha NS-SP1800BL 5.1 speaker system which was really cheap. The overall sound quality is excelent. I just miss a composite RGB for the Wii console. I had to connect it to the TV and use the TV digital optical port to send the Wii Audio back to the receiver. I also connected a simple Samsung Blue Ray to it and it all works very well. It is worth the purchase.

I knew the brand, but never had bought anything from them. the geek squad helped me make my decision. I have 5.1 surround so didn't go with the more expensive models. Setup is so easy with great wizard that helps you setup the speakers and subwoofer.. I love that there are different settings for movie/gaming/music.

When reviewing receivers and having purchased a Marantz NR1603 about a year and a half ago, I have come to the conclusion that having internet capabilities in a receiver is pretty much worthless. Don't pay extra for that. Nearly all of your other components will have internet connectivity anyway. Or, add a component like an Apple TV that is designed specifically to work with broadband. That is what I did in this case. Marantz receiver, Apple TV, Monoprice 5.1 speakers and I have an awesome setup for my kids in the basement for about as cheap as possible. The only negative I would have about this receiver is that it does not upscale video, therefore, the WII did not work with it. When I plugged the WII into the Marantz component inputs, I could only get sound on the TV - no video. The choice was either run the WII directly to the TV or find a WII converter. I found a WII HDMI converter for about $35 and voila - I can now run the WII through the receiver and also have upscale video to 1080P....problem solved!!
