Mario Kart in the real world!

This is a very fun twist to playing Mario kart. You can build your own track with real world items as long as you have the 4 checkpoints dispersed somewhere along the track. The checkpoints can digitally look different on the screen with multiple options to choose from. The checkpoints are also used for item boxes, boosts, and more. You first set up the checkpoints in a room then drive the car around using the switch to make the track with the car. It's pretty intuitive. It's a lot of fun and there's lots of cosmetic rewards to unlock. I wish there were a way to buy a second car to use on the same switch for multiplayer but you have to buy a whole other switch to do that. My family and I just take turns. The other thing is that the checkpoints are made out of cardboard, so I'm a little worried over time there could be some where and tear. It is built really well, i just wish they were made out of plastic or something.

If I was a kid, I would love this. I am 26 now, & I love this. The range between the Switch & the car could be better, & I wish there were more character options than just Mario & Luigi, but this might be the coolest thing my Switch can do. The game has also received a few free content updates which I never suspected, so I can't complain there. The best update was making it possible to use 2 cars simultaneously on 1 Switch, because before that update, you needed 1 Switch device per car, which is not a cheap prospect. This is super fun. My older brother loved it, my young nieces & nephew loved it, & my parents loved it. Cons: - expensive - limited range between car & Switch before the connection drops - only 2 players per Switch supported - only 2 characters (No Peach? No Bowser? Really?) - no support for the Switch's screenshot or screen recording (I suspect this is due to privacy concerns that Nintendo has with children tweeting videos of the inside of their homes, but I still wish I could record clips, as it's really funny to see your house from this perspective.) - a large, preferably hardwood, floor space is required - the cars themselves are really good just as RC cars, but they are not outdoor safe - the cardboard is not gonna be free from wear & tear forever, but people have found that printing off the images found on the cardboard works just fine as a replacement, so it's not the biggest issue.

Overall, if you love some Mario kart, you'll enjoy this, although the novelty won't last. The car is solid and setting up a track is easy, but I wish I didn't need to buy another Switch and car just to play multiplayer. However, after a several races, it's just not nearly as engaging as the "real" thing, ala Mario Kart 8. Even my young, Mario obsessed nephews tuned out after an hour. Great for terrifying your pets though.

Nintendo has really been the king of gimmicks in recent years, luckily for us they are really good at it. This time Nintendo is stepping into the world of augmented reality. In other words, you can put your digital Mario Kart into the real world. You set up course barriers around your room and the kart uses a built in camera to turn any room up to 15x15 into a real and virtual racetrack. Obviously you are going to want hard floors for this to make sure the little kart is able to run on it. You also need a lot of free space to play this game right, but it works fantastically! The built in track design tool is top notch, and the camera picks everything up very fast, so your races are as real time as can be, with no lag that I've noticed. This is an excellent gift for your kids, or the kid-in-you!

If you want your kid to have one of the greatest Christmas mornings of their lives, and you already have a Switch, this is about the biggest no-brainer you can get. To be frank, this will provide the greatest first impression of any toy and video game. You'll have a fun few hours with this, probably be passing it around for others to try. And then about a few weeks later, your kid might only play it sparingly. That's just the way it goes with these types of toys. And if you have multiple kids, it might be problematic just only getting one of these. You might need to get a second one of these, and also have a second switch. And yes that is an expensive proposition. This is probably ideal for a household that only has one kid. But you will absolutely blow your kid away with this.

A great product, most fun I've had with a game or toy in a long time. Just recognize what it can and can't do. Addressing a couple common complaints I've read: Range: Just driving it around the house, the occasional video hiccup is not an issue, I can pretty drive it anywhere, even behind closed doors and under beds. Racing, however, is a different story; any dropped frame when you're also dodging virtual shells and trying to stay in the lead can be a disaster. So, track setup needs to be tight and close to the switch, going behind the couch etc tends to not work out so well. But free driving is a lot a fun in any case. Surfaces: It's very low to the floor. I have pretty firm carpeting, and the kart handles it fine, as it does my uneven tiled floor. A small lip between the two, though, can get the kart stuck with the wheels off the ground if it's approached slowly at just the wrong angle. I do find myself occasionally having to pause a race to go give the kart a little push here and there if I stray somewhere I shouldn't, but any RC enthusiast knows that's how it is sometimes. I fortunately don't end up with long hairs on the floor, but I've read a few reviews of people complaining of tangles in the wheels. I sympathize, but these are pretty tight precision little machines; it's just gotta be a clean surface. Love it, my kid and I can't stop playing with it.

So, the premise is wonderful, and initial gameplay is a blast. I feel like this is the best use of Augmented Reality yet. Despite the fact that I don't really play with it anymore (see points below for why), I still think ANY mario fan who's into augmented reality or emerging tech have one on their shelf for the novelty. Now, why haven't I played with it much since launch? 1. Not a reason but I really hoped to see several more playable character cars being launched -- figured they'd have the whole gang available to purchase and collect by now. Where are they? supports 4 players but you'd have to hvae 2 marios and 2 luigis hah.. 2. I guess the novelty does wear off. 3. Range is pretty terrible. I had envisioned letting the course run throughout my main level through multiple rooms, while sitting on the couch. Because this is high bandwidth low latency communications between the car and your console, the course really has to be right in front of you in the same room, greatly diminishing the possibilities. Lag can still be present in those conditions. And this is with the console in handheld mode. If you're docked, it's even more laggy as you have the added latency of wireless controls added in. Even with stuff right in front of me it seemed like simple things like a coffee table in the line of sight still affected quality by a huge degree. 4. Torque is super low. I hoped to create multi level types of courses, small ramps and such, but wouldn't bother. 5. Turning radius is a little lower than you'd expect, making hairpin turns impractical. I normally wouldn't be bothered by this, but due to the limitations of having a course right in the same room, being limited to wider turns can be annoying.

Watching the cart go around it looks slow, but when playing with the camera so low to the ground and with all the AR obstacles - it's pretty fast and fun! We've only unlocked the 100cc kart so far, but it goes up to 200cc which I think will be more than fast enough. I'm a bit of a tech nerd, and I can honestly say this is the most fun bit of tech I've brought in a long time! Would be even more fun with 2 karts whizzing around!

Great game, really cool AR tech that brings Mario Cart to another level. Not your "classic" Mario Cart but as close as you can get with something like this, but if your looking for more than just another game this is a great buy! Takes some time at first to build a track the right way getting the angles correct, etc. but that was part of the fun of it. It makes you think and get a little creative which is probably why some might not like it ;) Battery life on the cart could be better if playing with other people on one cart (or better yet a removable battery to charge another while playing) but a couple hours on a charge for one player is great. Just make sure you don't have skittish cats or lazy dogs that want to sit in your race track path! lol Game also has GREAT potential for future updates!
