Finally! Maverick on DVD

I thought I'd seen most of them growing up, but I went through the entire first season with barely a hint of recognition regarding most of these episodes. The storytelling was superior in these early episodes and it was surprising to see so much attention given to the strategy behind some of the poker games Maverick plays in. I'd say after seeing this first season that the concept actually got watered down as the series progressed. I am only disappointed that the producers of this DVD set weren't able to get James Garner to do an audio commentary -- I would have loved to hear some insight from Maverick himself.

A Classic TV Western

Combining suspense, humor and irony, James Garner and Jack Kelly played their roles exceptionally well. It's a shame that television no longer creates shows like Maverick, instead opting for the ridiculousness of "Reality TV", which is anything but real.

James Garner at his BEST

The most lovable con man you'd ever want to meet. Great entertainment in all it's black-and-white glory. Highly recommended.

Comedy Western at its best
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review."Maverick" broke all expectations of a Western hero when it was first shown ("He who fights and runs away lives to run away again another day"), and it's still as fresh and funny today. James Garner and Jack Kelly as the Maverick brothers attempt to get out of trouble without using guns - or getting killed. One of TV's very best.
