Strange artifact of the early 2000s

In 2004, From Software (already known for its King's Field and Armored Core series, but well before releasing its genre-defining Demon's Souls, Dark Souls series, or Bloodborne) developed and published this odd little mech action title as an XBox exclusive. The XBox had failed to gain much traction in Japan compared to western territories, and Microsoft wanted something that could boost its sales. The game failed in that regard, and plans for localization in other regions fell by the wayside, with the original XBox release fading into obscurity, despite a cult following.
Fast forward to 2019. Devolver Digital publishes a port/remaster of Metal Wolf Chaos for PC, Playstation 4, and XBox One. While the visuals have been upgraded, and some gameplay features modernized, for the most part this is the same product as the original 2004 release.
And a good thing too --if this really is anything like the original release, we missed out on something special in 2004. Playing it now is like time traveling back to a different era in video games, one in which the "AA" space thrived alongside big budget blockbusters, allowing developers to play with weird ideas. The story is bonkers, and the voice acting laughable, but it is wrapped around a surprisingly solid mech action game. The core mechanics are decently fun, and the game delivers a great sense of power while still offering a decent challenge.
It may be rough around the edges, but this is an easy recommendation for anyone who played video games in the late 1990s and early 2000s, even if, like me, you never had a chance to play the original Metal Wolf Chaos at the time. For the younger crowd, this one may be too dated. As for me, I had an absolute blast "partying" as the "President of the Great United States of America!"

Instant 4 out 5 stars for this gem of a game. Almost immediately you learn the Vice President has overthrown the government, and it's up to you, the President of the United States of America, to stop him with your trusty battle mech.
GOOD
-It's early Devolver Digital and From Software. Yes, from the people who made Red Dead Redemption and Dark Souls respectively.
-Over the top action makes it the perfect run and gun shooter.
-Fairly straightforward gameplay. For the most part, it's fight your way to the objective. There's some exploration but not enough to make you get lost.
HALF AND HALF
-Over the top cheese. The dialogue, story, and voice acting are all over the place. The entire premise is so wild that it makes it beyond enjoyable.
-Dialogue and voice acting are pure 80s/90s level of goodness. As in, the voice actors didn't properly emote scenes. The closest I can describe it is old dubbing of kung fu movies.
BAD
-It's an upgraded port of the original Xbox version that only released in Japan. Graphics did receive a touchup but are still rough compared to what's available now.

Metal Wolf Chaos XD is a cult classic that original only released on the Xbox in Japan, and that version is very costly. Best Buy had the PS4 remaster on sale so I bought a few copies. This is a very fun mech game with a cheesy story where you play as the US President in a mech. It also runs at 4K on PS4 Pro if that's of interest to you.

Okay...., this is the most patriotic game ever conceived by humankind...and it took a Japanese developer to create it. Thanks Japan i love you!! This masterpiece...well, okay, masterpiece is not the right word. It's repetitive and it's stupid. I could care less though. This game is just too funny to pass up.
You play as the 47th President of the United States Michael Wilson. Vice President Richard Hawk has just launched a coup and is looking to completely takeover the US. Armed with your Metal Wolf mech, it's up to you to liberate America from Hawk's tyranny. The story is every bit as ridiculous, stupid and cheesy as I could have ever hoped for. So playing this was a way for me to get some lol out of our Current Orange President and boy was it fun.
The gameplay is rather similar to that of From Software's other mech series like Armored Core. You load up with a variety of weapons that you can dual wield and switch on the fly, mowing down anything and everything standing in the way of freedom. Aside from slight variations like getting to a destination in a certain time of facing off against the occasional boss, each of the missions play out exactly the same: destroy all primary targets and rescue the occasional hostage. The game is very repetitive, and if you are not really a fan of that sort of loop you are bound to get bored of this game really fast. The game can also suffer from a serious case of glitches whenever there's too much going on at once. The combat and silliness was just fun enough to keep me going to the very end.

This is a great action game in the vein of the original XBox classic but it can be cheesy in a fun way. Lots of fun but definitely not a serious game so go into it with the right expectations.
