I have used several Microsoft Surface devices over the years and have been impressed with their portability and small form factor, thus I was excited to try out the new Microsoft Surface Go 2. The unit I received has the Intel Pentium Gold Processor and 8 GB of RAM. This device is a very solid piece of equipment. It feels well-made, and the Microsoft keyboard accessory is very easy to attach and remove when needed. The keyboard has a backlight as well, which is great! This device is also very portable, so it is great for using on the go. The stand on the back works well and is great for propping the device up at different angles. I love that with the Surface Tablets, you can run Windows 10 on them, which has all of the features and capabilities of a windows machine in a very light and portable tablet-like design. Be advised that this device comes with Windows configured in S mode, which only allows you to install apps from the Microsoft Store. In order to install apps from elsewhere as usual, you do have to go and disable S mode in settings. Along with all the features and capabilities you would expect from any Windows 10 machine, this even has a few extra as well. It has some additional hardware that allows for Windows Hello facial recognition which is a fast and easy way to sign in without putting in a password or PIN. Additionally, it has a rear camera, which you would not normally get on a Windows laptop. This particular device doesn’t have a very fast processor. It runs fine for minimally intensive tasks and can handle basic computing. But, it does feel a bit sluggish when doing even simple tasks. When opening programs, installing programs, or updating software, it just felt a little slow. For example, when opening Word, there was a good 5-6 second wait before it opened. And, once I started working on a new document, there was some delay before the text I typed showed up on the screen. But, after typing several things for maybe 10 seconds, it caught up and then there was no delay in typing text after that. While it was a little sluggish in handling everyday tasks, it handled them fine. It isn’t horribly slow, but you aren’t going to get the quick response that you would on a machine with a better processor. The delay when first creating a Word document wasn’t a major issue, but it does take a little extra patience. For many, I'm sure the small delays will be just fine! I tested this device on a Skype call and have to say I thought it did a great job. The quality of video on the display was very crisp and it has a high quality front-facing webcam as well as front-facing speakers. I do think the speakers could be a little louder and fuller, but they were decent. Also, unfortunately, even in Skype (which is made by Microsoft), there was no quick button to switch to the back camera on the Surface. I had to go all the way into Skype settings while in the call to show my back camera and then switch back to the front camera. It’s unfortunate that while there is a back camera, there is no easy way to switch to it during video calling. I also tried a video call on Facebook messenger, and didn’t even see a way to change to the back camera while in the call. Also, I did notice that after being on the Skype call for a while, the Surface did get hot and it definitely went through the battery faster while on the call. Despite these observations, I was still satisfied with the video calling experience nonetheless. The Windows Hello facial recognition on this device is really convenient for signing in. Additionally, the Microsoft keyboard is a great added accessory. It is easy to type on, attach and remove when necessary, and it has a backlight that can be turned on and adjusted for brightness which is a very useful feature. Be advised that the keyboard is sold separately and is not included with this device. Conclusion: Overall, the Microsoft Surface Go 2 is a good device for simple tasks (word processing, email, watching videos, video calling, etc). I wouldn’t say that it’s great, as it was just a little slow at normal tasks, but it’s good. Going from my everyday laptop to this machine was definitely a drop in performance that was noticeable when opening programs and performing tasks, which did require more patience. It wasn’t unbearably slow, but definitely noticeable. Despite the slower performance, I really like that this device supports Windows Hello facial recognition, and I was very satisfied with the sturdy design of the machine. As a secondary computer or a computer for simple/non-intensive tasks, this should definitely do the job. This would not work for any intensive tasks such as video editing or any intensive gaming, so if you are looking to do those, I would look elsewhere. And, if you want a machine that opens programs very quickly without delays, you might want to look at one of the higher-end Surface devices which would definitely run faster than this device. If you are looking to get an affordable device that is portable and can handle non-intensive computing tasks, this would be a great pick!
