The Microsoft Surface Pro X Signature Keyboard with Slim Pen is the perfect compliment to the Surface Pro X. This keyboard (compatible solely with the Pro X) and stylus type Slim Pen are the finishing touches needed to provide a true laptop experience. Both the keyboard and the pen are classic and understated in appearance. Covered in a black, “specially treated Alcantara material” advertised as being durable, stain-resistant and easy to wipe clean, these peripherals both appear and feel high-end. The keyboard is slightly smaller than 11 ½ x 9 inches and is almost 1/5 inch thick. The keys are backlit and the trackpad measures 2 ½ x 4 inches and is very precise and responsive. I personally do not feel it provides adequate space for use with a wireless mouse so I used my mouse on the desk. When typing it doesn’t feel as stable as a desktop or traditional laptop keyboard but it is substantial. This is one of the trade-offs related to its lightweight and portability. It affixes to the bottom of the Pro X magnetically and when closed provides both a protective cover for the screen as well as protective storage for the Slim Pen. There is a dedicated, magnetic storage slot for the Pen at the top of the keyboard that also provides continuous charging. When the Pen is purchased separately it comes with a charging base that connects via USB-C. The Slim Pen measures just less than 5 inches long x ½ inch wide and is fully magnetized. The pen can be used as a traditional stylus in that you can point/click on the screen as well as draw/take notes on the touch screen. The tail end functions as an eraser for erasing mistakes onscreen and no matter how quickly you draw (or scribble while coloring) the pen keeps pace in real time with no visible lag. The Slim Pen feels natural in your hand. It’s not too skinny or insignificant feeling when held- unlike some other tablet “pens” that I have used. While this keyboard/pen combo is not cheap, there is some savings to be had when buying them as part of a bundle and in this case you definitely “get what you pay for”.

If you're going to buy the Surface Pro-X (and that's a big if given its price and lack of supported apps), you need to buy this keyboard and slim pen. They keyboard and pen add little weight to the already light Surface Pro X. There are two clever features of the keyboard. The first is the storage area for the pen automatically charges the pen. If you’re an office worker, you’re not likely to use the pen often, but it's good to know it will be charged and ready for when you need it. The second nifty feature of the keyboard is that when you first open it into typing position, the magnets keep it from fully unfolding. That results in the the keyboard laying at a slight angle instead of completely flat, which is easier to type on. In that initial position, the pen stays hidden. If you need to use the pen, you completely unfold it flat. The pen itself is pressure sensitive. That would make it great to use for photo and drawing apps, except that the Surface Pro X is so slow, and I'm not sure which apps support its SQ1 processor. Also, the pen is slim and not round. You will either love it or hate. You should certainly test it out before committing to a purchase.
