Right off the bat, this laptop works as advertised and if paired with a good laptop cooler (IE5000 for example plus it is a must if want things to run cool) you can have some good thermals for both CPU and GPU. Underload i had the GPU averaging at around 68 Celsius with the laptop cooler. Red Dead 2 on a 4K display with ultra settings, runs at an average 70-80 fps even when in populated areas of the game. Starfield on a 4K display with some ultra and high settings mixed runs at 80s avg when the game is not CPU bound (certain areas of the game like the main cities or certain parts of the maps where theres a ton of details can cause the game to drop in the high 50s fps) if the game came with DLSS support i don’t think it would have been an issue, however theres mods now with DLSS support so have at it. I returned the laptop though because at the end a desktop at the same price can offer more performance for me especially when ive been using the laptop as a desktop replacement. However it didnt make sense for me have the laptop plugged in all the time when i know i am hardly going to go gaming else where besides home so it made sense to make an exchange. So to summarize, this is a beast of a laptop and if you are EXCLUSIVELY using this as how a laptop should be used (on the go, work travel, etc) and you want that extra Omph then yeah go for it. Just carry your hefty 330 watt laptop charger with you unless you get a reasonably smaller 330 watt GaN charger. If you were hoping to have a desktop replacement well then i recommend getting an actual desktop with a REAL 4090 video card, the one on the laptop is basically a 4070 desktop version with 16Gb of Vram.

I had 3 MSI laptops and this one is the best ones I've had so far. I totally recommend you consider purchasing this MSI.

My review is : 4.5 out of 5. Everything runs well under load, fans can get load but comparatively I would say noise is average. While running a VM and 8 tabs I can just hear the fans. The parts speak for themselves, my game example is Rainbow Six Siege. At max settings it runs from 250fps to 450fps. The speakers work well and out-sound the fans under load.

Msi Best Buy review This NSI GE78HX is a very good gaming laptop. The screen is sharp and vivid. The keyboard is also well done and comfortable to type on while the trackpad is so smooth I’d say it’s slick. The speakers are also excellent and up there with ASUS’ offerings on the Scar series althoguh not quite as good as Razer’s speakers on the Blade 18. The gaming performance is phenomenal thanks to the 4090 GPU! The cooling system I found to be pretty good and MSI supposedly uses a phase change thermal compound on both the CPU and GPU. The machine will stay relatively quiet while getting good thermals if kept on the “balanced” mode in the MSI Center control software. Extreme Performance will send the fans running at full speed and while this gives you some increases in FPS and power it’s not completely necessary. You can also undervolt the GE78 by going into MSI’s hidden advanced BIOS. Overall, this is a fantastic machine and if you can get it below the 3,999 MSRP it becomes a relatively good deal for the components and specs. It is well built, the display hinges feel very sturdy and the laptop looks pretty nice. Some things I did not like have to be mentioned. First, the CPU fan is almost always on even on battery while the laptop is idling (this cannot be changed in the BIOS as far as I saw). Sometimes it gets as high as 3500 rpm for seemingly no reason other than to keep the CPU at whatever target temp MSI set. Second, the power adapter is one of those old 330 watt ones like Dell uses on their M16 and M18 Alienwares. But it does have USB-C charging which is very nice. Third, if you like tinkering pretty much every professional reviewer has said that the GE78 can be a bit of a chore to open up, not impossible, but a little tricky. Other than those three things above I think this is a great gaming machine especially if you can find it on sale. The RGB light bar is stunning, cooling performance is great, the display is lovely and port selection is fantastic! Highly recommended!
