Radio like in the old days!

It has been a long time since I had a portable radio and the truth is that it has been a pleasant experience. I really like to listen to music while I do my work, but what happens sometimes when I play music on my phone is that I get distracted selecting and changing songs, but with a radio like this it's just a matter of plugging it in, tuning in a station and letting the radio do its thing. I just let the programming of the selected radio station run its course and I'm on my own.
In the box comes the radio, the power cord and a user manual. In addition to being able to plug it directly into the power outlet, it is possible to use the radio with 4 AA batteries in case you can't connect it to the mains.
Despite being a relatively compact device, it has a 10 cm speaker that sounds very good, in fact better than I expected. At the top is located the extendable antenna that although it fulfills its function, it can only be moved from left to right (looking at the device from the front). It also has a handle to carry the radio and can be rotated to position it on the back so it does not get in the way of the antenna.
On the right side is located the station change knob, volume dial and a headphone jack. Tuning between radio stations is easy and there is a small red light that illuminates when the station is tuned correctly. Increasing the volume to maximum levels sometimes distorts the sound but it depends on how well the station is tuned. The 3.5 jack input is for monaural earphones only.
On the front is the power button which in turn serves to switch from FM to AM, it is clear that the Frequency Modulation has better audio quality, although the Amplitude Modulation reaches more coverage, both work as they should. At the bottom of the power button is the panel that shows the range of frequencies available for tuning stations. This panel has a white strip in the middle that glows in the dark, this is relatively useful since it has no illumination in case of use in places with poor lighting. When tuning to a station, the orange indicator on the front panel moves up/down to let you know which frequencies you are tuning to.
In summary, this compact radio meets the basic functions of a conventional radio, can be connected to the outlet or can be used with batteries, can be transported easily, you can tune FM or AM stations, the speaker gives a good volume, and has a tuner knob and a volume dial, it is really very intuitive and easy to use, for its price it is certainly a great option, I can clearly recommend it.

I don't listen to the radio at all for music. Even in my car, I use a USB stick for music. The radio I listen to is AM talk radio. And I listen to it daily at work.
The problem is that the few AM/FM radios I've tried in the past for the office have been horrible. Small portable things that had useless reception. So I had hoped this one, being a larger size than those tiny little portable ones, may do better. At the office, I'm stuck streaming the station either over the Amazon Echo device or the iHeartRadio website, and both are barely worth the effort because of the annoying ads they spam you with.
I like the size - this has a large speaker, so during my testing I was actually playing music and FM stations, and it sounds better than any other radio I had tested for the music. Not nearly as tinny, since the speaker itself is larger than many of the radios out there. It can produce a better sound. At my home, it worked fine.
On the AM side of things, at home I've got decent reception for the station I want to listen to. It's playing right now. No static, no interference. But that's common at home even with the smaller ones. I grabbed this radio for work, so we'll have to see if the larger size makes any difference there.
I like that it can run on four AA batteries, OR off the power cord. I'll use the power cord for my normal daily use at the office, but the battery option could be handy when I'm out and about if I want to bring it along.
The power button is simple to operate, slide left for off, middle position is FM, right position is AM.
Volume is a standard rotating dial with just the edge sticking out of the side, easy to adjust.
What I'm not much of a fan of is the tuning knob. For me, it is too close to the mounting point of the handle, so if I want to use the part of the knob with the raised edges for grip, my positioning is limited for my hand and fingers. The knob does come out from the radio with a tapered part as well, but that's smooth, smaller, and not nearly as easy to precisely adjust on the smaller part of the knob as it is on the larger part closer to the radio. But it's only an annoyance that the first time I tuned things in, since usually this will sit on the one station. But I'm going to dislike it any time I need to change the tuning. I've added a photo of the knob in question.
There is a handle for secure carrying, that folds down behind it out of the way.
It's solid, the handle feels secure. The power cord though I wish was more flexible, some more standard type of power cord for smaller electronics now. It's the older style thick, not very flexible two wire cable. The end that plugs in is shaped so it only fits in one way, and the prongs on the plug are keyed so it can only go into the outlet one way.
But the disappointment was felt when I got it to my office. Now, my office is pretty much the same distance from the radio station that's north of me in Milwaukee, since my home is just three blocks south of one of the major highways running through the city, and the office is about a block north of it, just a few miles down the road. Distance hasn't changed, and in both spots I'm on the northernmost wall of the building. I'm guessing that this wall at the office has a different composition than the one at the house, since now, at my office, this sounds every bit as bad as every other smaller radio I've ever tried did. Even when I have it sitting right in the window so there's nothing but a little bit of glass between it and the open air to the broadcasting antenna in Milwaukee, it's all but useless.
The fact that this larger one didn't do any better than a radio barely bigger than my iPhone could, is a disappointment. Look at this as any other radio as far as reception goes. Don't buy it to IMPROVE reception, since it likely won't be any better than anything else out there. But for sound, if you have a good signal with something else, then this will likely be an upgrade for the quality of the speaker alone. But if that's all you're going for there are many options besides this as well.

The forgotten but necessary home safety device.

A battery-operated AM/FM radio is a basic home safety necessity in this internet dependent world. I’ve had more than one occasion where I lost power and cell service wasn’t available, and after the 1st time I dug an old transistor radio out of storage. Times have changed and tech has improved, and that is evident in this radio. The biggest issued with older radios was being able to find a station and lock it in. This radio has a built-in retractable antenna and adds a digital (not digital display) tuner. The tuner has an Auto Frequency Control that assists with keeping the radio tuned to the station selection. The tuner dial is not backlit, but the frequency indicator is fluorescent for better visibility. There’s a red light on the front that indicates this feature is active. The radio is powered by a detachable AC cord, so no more having to wind up a cord and try to fit it in the back of the radio and 4 AA batteries. The power switch is located on the front of the unit and functions as a band selector, which is separate from the volume dial. I use the radio regularly and appreciate being able to turn it on at the same volume level it was at when I turned it off. The top handle folds for easy storage and the tuning knob is responsive. There’s also a 3.5 mm standard headphone jack and the built in speaker is about 4”. The sound quality is very good for a mono unit but doesn’t approach stereo quality.

Really nice and compact radio. Comes in a sturdy box and well protected. I love how sturdy and well put it feels. It has a nice and long metallic antenna and a sturdy carrying handle. One can use this radio either with AC power (cable included) or with 4 AA batteries (in case of power loss, emergency or even camping, however batteries are NOT included). I love how ease to use it is. The switch on the front will either tune FM or AM or switch the radio off. Once you are using it there is a big and bright red LED on the front and I love how it lights up as soon as you are correctly tuned on a station, no more guesswork! I also like how the tuner indicator shines when dark. The speaker quality is good, granted is just one speaker (mono) this doesn't affect the quality. Sound is crisp and clear. Voices are clear too. I tried raising the volume to the max and there was little distortion, but there is no need to, volume is plenty high up to the middle. One should always have a one of these radios handy, you never know when you are going to need them. From a power outage, to an emergency situation, or even if you go camping, this is a simple and very handy radio to have. Highly recommend getting one!!

I gave this radio to my son and he was immediately intrigued that it worked without the Internet like the radio in a car. He's glad that he can use it when he's out of tablet time or if the power goes out or portable and away from the house. I'm using it to teach him about radio waves and that not everything is WiFi or cellular nor does everything need the Internet.
As for the radio itself, it's easy to use, has AM and FM, it tunes easily and the speaker sounds great. It does exactly what it needs to do, no more and no less. Reminds me of a simpler time. Can run plugged into the wall or on 4 AA batteries. The volume is good and the radio itself feels rugged. Reception on it is great, even in the basement there's no static on almost every station.
Really if all you need is a portable radio with dual power sources, this covers all the bases and fits the bill. The price is right and it does everything that it needs to without the excess need of registering for some app or signing up with an email address. Highly recommended

Panasonic AM/FM potable radio, wow talk about flash backs to when I was a kid on my uncle and aunts farm, I would walking around carrying a radio about the same small compact size following my uncle well we feed the animals! I really love this small compact size the sound is better than it was as a kid. It takes 4 double AA batteries (Not Included) and also comes with a power cord to use without batteries. It does have an antenna, headset Jack, Tuning/band on and off switch. A volume knob on the side. Very old school travel radio simple life. All the stations I love I was able to get tuned in clearly, the sound was so much better then I thought it would be speaker sounds better good. For some reason it made me a little happy to just turn on a radio, not have to fidget with playlist having to figure out what I wanted to listen to, or having to keep my phone charged while playing in case I got a phone call or needed to leave in an emergency. This little radio is also perfect in an emergency situation so we could listen to the news or whatever else if we were to lose power! I couldn't be happier

Nice AM/FM Digital Tuning Radio for Emergencies

Talk about getting nostalgic. This Panasonic Model RF-2400D Silver AM / FM 2 Band Receiver takes me back to the early 1970's, when FM Rock radio stations were just starting to be taken seriously for broadcasting whole albums. Back then, it was cool to have a battery-operated portable radio to take with you to play those stations at your friend's house or in the park or even in your bed at night with earphones. Cheap thrills.
And of course, a radio like this was essential for us in the Midwest, when bad weather threatened and tornados were forcast. You needed a battery powered portable radio to be able to get the blow-by-blow local forcasts that kept you safe and in the knowledge of what was happening around you, while you huddled together in the neighbor's basement.
In that way, this Pansonic Portable AM / FM Radio still is useful in the job of keeping everyone informed as dangerous weather swirls around us. Though still very basic, this Panasonic Model RF-2400D Silver AM / FM 2 Band Receiver has the great feature of wide-band digital tuning, which truly enhances one's capability of finding and solidly tuning into the AM or FM station of choice.
Here are some other good features of this lightweight, sturdy, well-built portable radio: the unit's tuning dial has a large, clear font; when moving the silver switch on the front of the unit to one of the bands, a red LED goes on to let you know the power is ON; when you move the switch from 'OFF' to the 'FM' band to the 'AM' band, there is an orange marker that moves from each setting to let you know which you are currently on; when tuning to a station, a long fluorescent orange horizontal bar indicates where you are at on the dial, which glows; there is a larger tuning knob to the right side, along with a rotating touch wheel for the volume; yes, it has a port for an earphone; it has a 10cm front speaker with decent sound; it has a handy fold down carrying handle; and last, but not least, it has a clip-down, swingable telescoping metal antenna that is proficient at picking up a good signal.
This Pansonic radio runs off of either the provided, detachable electric cord or on (4) AA Alkaline non-rechargeable batteries (only).
The Panasonic Model RF-2400D Silver AM / FM 2 Band Receiver will come in handy when you need it most.

I have not had a basic AM/FM radio for a few years now. I. Needed one to have on hand in my emergency kit when the power goes out or when we are tent camping. I was impressed with the Panasonic RF-2400D FR-AM 2 Band Receiver. It is lightweight enough to carry yet heavy enough that a light wind will not blow it over. It requires 4 AA batteries that are not included. It also will run on electric using the enclosed cord. The cord is a basic 2 prong cord. Not grounded.
It has an extendable antenna that stores on the top of the radio. It is easy to turn on and off as well as change from AM to FM. My local station came in perfectly. No cuttting out or fading at all. Also the sound was more than I expected. Since I use mostly digital music now I expected this radio to have a weird sound but it does not. It is comparable to my digital. Also the volume goes up really loud. Not loud enough for a pool party but loud enough for a family gathering.
I was expecting a flimsy handle but this handle is sturdy. It is not so small that it makes my hands feel cramped holding it. Yet it is not so big that is takes up a lot of room. The handle folds down behind the radio for storage. I like it so much that I carrying it from room to room while I am cleaning.
This is perfect for everyday use as well as emergency kits. I am impressed.

This radio brings back a nostolgia that I had long forgotten, the portable AM/FM radio. When I first signed up to receie this radio, I was no sure if I really needed it or not. I have a Spotify subscription and more Bluetooth speakers than I care to admit. However, the idea of a good old fashioned AM/FM radio was too compelling for me, so I had to get it.
The first thing I noticed was the size. It is pretty small, about the size of your average soft cover book. It feels very sturdy with the handle and antenna feeling exceptionally sturdy. The tuner knob does feel sturdy, but the AM/FM/Off switch does not feel as sturdy. It takes a litttle finesse to get that switch just right since it moes left to right and covers three functions. It also includes a power cord which lets you run the radio plugged in or with 4 AA batteries.
The sound is actually very good, with one speaker. I immediately tuned to my favorite FM radio station and started carrying it around in battery mode. I have been using it for several days and the batteries have held up. I am rediscovering my love for AM/FM radio. I cannot wait to take this radio with me to a beach in which I want to leave my cell phone in my car or hotel room. Then I can truly feel that I am relaxing without a care in the world.

The Panasonic portable radio arrived with the radio; power cord, and user manual, batteries are not included.
There is no setup, it is ready to plug and play or put on some batteries and take it outside and play for hours.
It looks cool, retro look and feel without the heaviness, the antenna extends long and the handle is there to easily take it with me. When the lights are off, the line in the middle of the stations glows so I can see the dial going up or down easily.
It sounds good, it is loud with some bass and the light turns on when it knows there is a good signal, it does pickup plenty of channels too on both AM and FM.
It does take 4 AA batteries that are not included and it makes it easy to take the radio to the backyard, garage or to the park.
I do like the 3.5mm headphone jack, I do have both wired and wireless headphones and it just feels better with the wired headphones.
Overall, it is functional, I do like that it is both plug and battery powered, it sounds good for one speaker and looks retro and cool.

Sometimes old tech is good tech

Sometimes older tech is good tech. In my opinion, it’s a good idea to have a basic radio around the house. Several years ago during an ice storm, we didn’t have power for 5 full days. The wifi and internet services went down, and by day 3 the local cell towers were starting to have issues, so on the last two days the ONLY thing I had to keep me informed and to listen to music was an older battery powered radio. The Panasonic RF-2400D is one such radio.
The Panasonic 2400 (for short) is basic. It’s dual-band (AM/FM) so you get the essentials, but it would have been nice if they had included the weather band as well so you could keep up specifically with weather-related broadcasts, too. It’s a mid-sized radio at just over 9 inches wide by almost 5 inches tall, but lightweight with a handle, so easy to carry around. The AM/FM/Power switch, tuning dial, and body are plastic. There is a single mono speaker on the front that’s around 4 inches and produces decent if not a bit “tinny” sound. It does what it’s supposed to do. A built-in antenna can be raised and extended as needed to get better reception, though in the Atlanta area, I haven’t had any issues tuning in to the most common stations. A small light lets you know when you’re tuned in best to a station. The tuning bar will collect light and in a dark area later will glow (a little) for a while to make it easier to see, though there aren’t any built-in lights in the dial area. An earphone jack allows for mono listening privately.
You can power the Panasonic 2400 via four AA batteries, or with the included AC adapter cord. Panasonic estimates you’ll get up to 52-55 hours of use per battery set, but of course this will depend on the brand you use, and it rates those hours on Alkaline batteries – no mention in the flier that comes with it if you can use AA Lithium batteries or not (take care and ask the manufacturer first, as with some devices, AA Lithiums can cause overheating).
Any suggestions I would give to Panasonic to make this a perfect rated radio for me, would be to add a weather band to it, and maybe a small emergency light that could be used if needed? That’s it – a no thrills, low tech, old tech device that is still very handy to have in today’s world. The price is reasonable for what it is, and when you do need it, you’ll be glad you have it. Just make sure to have some AA batteries in your emergency stockpile to be able to use it!

Storm season in Oklahoma means tornados. Tornados mean it is time to stock up on batteries, water, and to keep a solid AM / FM radio nearby. The Panasonic RF-2400D portable AM / FM radio feels a bit retro, but it is a pretty handy portable radio for tornado season. It is a throwback in the best and worst ways, and while I wish it had a few more features like Bluetooth, it is a pretty solid radio for the price point.
Panasonic advertises battery life of 60 hours on 4 AA batteries. So far, the batteries have held up, and I have yet to replace them after a week of regular use. FM channel reception is good, but AM reception is just okay as some nearby AM stations have a lot of noise and distortion. The speaker is clear and loud. The knobs and controls are very intuitive.
There is a headphone jack. In my experience, I only got sound from one ear. I am not sure if that is how the headphone jack was designed, or if there was just a compatibility issue with headphones that had a combo jack for headset and microphone.
All-in-all, it is a pretty solid radio. While a few upgrades would be nice and help modernize the design, this is still a very solid radio. Reception is good. Audio quality is good. This is an easy recommendation for anyone in the market for a portable AM/FM radio.

There's something to be said for a simple AM/FM radio, especially one built around an excellent tuner. When given the opportunity to review this Panasonic portable radio, I was pretty interested to see how well the device would work for just regular old radio since many of the products you see with this feature set are incredibly cheap and difficult to tune. The Panasonic is neither of those - it's inexpensive but well made, and the tuner is exceptionally good at locking in on radio stations. FM wise, despite the lack of precision in the display, it is able to easily hone in to stations that are close to each other on the band. AM wise I had a tougher time tuning in but the strong AM stations near me came in clearly.
After some tinkering on my own, I handed this to my 8 year old twins and they have been in love with it for the last week. It's super easy to use, has great sound quality, and gets the best sounding analog radio signal I think I've ever heard. Two huge thumbs up from me.

Rock out in the Garage

For some reason I was absolutely stoked to put this radio in my garage. There's just something so gratifying about annoying my wife with AM radio or Spanish language music blasting from my workshop.
...The Radio is portable, yet plenty loud enough to inspire screams of "Turn It Down" from inside the house. I appreciate that the radio is affordable, light weight, simple to use, has an adjustable antenna, uses batteries that normal people actually have around the house (4 x AA), comes with a power cord, has a usable handle, and receives both AM & FM frequencies.
At first I thought the radio was absolutely flawless, but after a couple of days I noticed that there are a few areas that could use improvement. First of all, I suppose it's nice that it has a 3.5 mm headphone jack - although I don't know who would ever plug in headphones. I would much rather have an auxiliary input. Nowadays it would be super handy to be able to plug a cellphone in and listen to Podcasts, or Spotify. Aux-In wouldn't even impact the price much at all.
Part of me wishes that the band selector would light up like an old school stereo, but I suppose that would just waste battery life. The only light on this thing is a small red power indicator. I haven't bothered to use batteries yet, but I imagine it would do pretty well with nothing unnecessary to waste power.
I also wish that the power was the vcontrolled with the volume knob (instead of the AM/FM/Power switch). I would rather turn the volume all the way down to a click - power off. I always feel as though the switch is half way between power or FM - or between AM & FM.
Lastly, this thing is almost entirely thin plastic. I have no doubt that I will eventually knock this thing off of my work bench and break the handle or the tuner dial. But, for the low price, I do think the thing is worth buying. Only one speaker so the sound is mono - not stereo - but it is a great choice for a cheap, easy, and simple shop radio.

With streaming music everywhere now, downloadable digital files still lingering in many people's collections, and classic mediums like CD's, record albums, and even tape cassettes making making a comeback in small arenas, the trusty AM/FM radio has all but been forgotten, until you need one, or you too want some nostalgia in your life.
This little radio is as simple as they come. It has a basic AM and FM radio receiver, a long extending antenna, and a speaker that can be heard from a long way away. As simple as this radio is, it definitely does not lack in quality. The speaker is loud and very clear when tuned into a station it can receive well. The tuner knob is big, making it very easy to fine tune the radio for stations that have weaker broadcasts. The volume button is very sensitive, so you can definitely fine tune that as well. I live in a suburban area, so there are plenty of radio stations and many of them come in easily, but I am impressed at easy it is to tune into a specific station. The antenna can only rotate on a 2D plane (meaning it pivots parallel to the radio body), but that pivot is wide, so you may have an easier time tuning this radio to a weak station then one that doesn't have an antenna at all.
A great feature of this radio is that it can pick up AM band stations, something that is not very common in a lot of radios today. Even if you don't listen to AM stations regularly, this is what you want if you are in an area that is dealing with the forces of nature. Conveniently, this radio can run on both AC power or 4 AA batteries. I cannot attest to how long the batteries will last, but I've run this radio for a full workday on the batteries, along with a few hours here and there, and they are still going. If you have an emergency kit for your household, this is one item you should definitely include. If you like to travel, especially camping, hiking, in an RV, or anywhere else where you have spotty cellular reception or just want to preserve your cell phone's battery, this is a great solution. It also has a headphone jack should you need one.
The only other notable feature is that the dial band (the white stripe running between the FM and AM numbers) glows in the dark. The numbers themselves do not, but the tuning dial (the orange band that moves as you tune the radio to a station) does not glow, so against the tuning dial, you will see a little break in the glow indicating where the tuning dial is. The radio also has a red LED light to indicate that the unit is turned on AND receiving a signal. If it seems to flicker, this indicates the radio reception is poor.
Of course, this radio has a very nostalgic look to it. It's much lighter than the radios of the 80's and 90's, many of which where contained in metal housing (this one is plastic), but is definitely has the feeling of a quality build.
Overall, this should be a must-buy for everyone, even if you don't listen to AM/FM radio normally. Natural disasters and other emergencies, especially those that involve power outages, can happen to anyone, and when you need the news and you don't want to drain your phone's battery, this can be your lifeline, or at least a source of information. If you do listen to AM/FM radio, this is a nice addition to any collection you have for both durability and portability.

Living in a rural area where weather can be unpredictable, finding a reliable source of information and entertainment is essential. The Panasonic Portable AM/FM Radio in silver has become that companion for our family, particularly during adverse weather conditions.
The first thing I noticed about this radio was its sleek, compact design. The silver finish is not only stylish but also feels durable. It's lightweight enough to carry from room to room or even outside, yet durable enough to handle the occasional knock or bump.
Sound quality on this model excels in that department. It delivers clear, crisp sound that makes listening to music a pleasure and ensures that we can hear weather updates and news broadcasts without any frustrating static or interference. This clarity is incredibly important during storms or emergency situations.
One of the standout features of this Panasonic radio is its strong reception. Even in our rural location, known for spotty signals, this radio picks up a range of AM and FM stations with remarkable consistency. This reliability means we can stay connected to the rest of the world, even when our other devices fail due to poor weather conditions.
The user interface is refreshingly straightforward, with intuitive controls that are easy to operate, even in the dark or during a power outage. Adjusting the volume or switching stations is hassle-free, which is exactly what you need during high-stress situations.
Battery life is another significant advantage. The radio runs efficiently on batteries, which is a godsend during extended power outages. We've found it to be incredibly energy-efficient, which is not only convenient but also economical.
In summary, the Panasonic Portable AM/FM Radio is a valuable tool for anyone living in areas prone to severe weather or with limited access to stable communication channels. Its combination of durability, excellent reception, and ease of use makes it an ideal choice for staying informed and entertained, no matter what the weather throws at us. I highly recommend this radio to anyone.

Not a lot of words needed to talk about this thing; it's a basic AM/FM radio. Unlike the boomboxes of my childhood, this is quite small and easily portable. Also unlike those boomboxes, you can't store the power cable in the empty battery compartment since it runs on four AAs and not six D cell batteries.
The carry handle has a notch in the middle, making it easier to hang on a small branch or a nail in the wall if you're using it as a shop radio. The tuning dial is large and quick to turn ( perhaps a bit too large, making it easy to bump ). The single 4" speaker means no stereo sound, but it does sound surprisingly good and can get fairly loud. And it's even got a 3.5mm jack for headphones.
It might be a tad overpriced for what it is ( $30 as of this writing, $20 - $25 would be a little better ) and the cord could stand to be a little longer ( it's only 5 ft ), but those are pretty nit-picky. It can be a great travel radio, something to bring to the beach where you don't care if it gets a little dirty or scratched. Same as a shop radio if you've got sawdust or grease all around and you don't want to ruin a touchscreen device. It might be a little big for an emergency kit radio, but it could also do the job.

I come from a generation where radio was one of the only entertainment options outside the home. It provided new music, sporting events, traffic updates, news, and talk radio shows. For the past week, I've been testing the Panasonic RF2400D, portable AM/FM radio. Overall, I'm impressed by its performance.
The Panasonic RF2400D has an excellent build quality, surprisingly strong reception and clear sound quality. It can be used with a wall plug or can be powered by 4 AA batteries (Not Included), It features a carry handle and telescoping antenna. Additionally, it has an easy-to-read display and a tuning knob with excellent feedback and adjustability. I used it in my basement, yard, and even at the job site. In every scenario, I easily was able to tune-in to local stations and was able to enjoy great music with great sound clarity. Also, the volume can get pretty loud.
With that said, this is a great radio for on the go entertainment and for "in case of emergency" situations. It has easily earned my recommendation.

This radio is utterly charming. Yes, a radio can be charming. Why? Because it’s such a throwback. Radios like this, just a simple, portable AM/FM with a small telescoping antenna and nothing more than a tuner, a volume control, an on-off switch, and an earphone jack, used to be everywhere. There is also a little red light that goes on when you are centered on a station (works on both bands), something that was typically seen when tuning in a stereo FM station on a component receiver and was not common on small, tabletop or portable radios.
I had several radios like this over the years as a teenager. Nowadays you hardly see them anymore. Nowadays it’s streaming on your phone, setting up apps, connecting to the internet, creating “playlists,” a term that at one time wasn’t part of music listening, satellite radio, mp3 players, and more.
The radio itself works very well. Out of the box, just connect the power cord, turn it on, and tune in a station. It uses four AA batteries as well for true portability. (Take it to the beach and amaze your friends!) The tuner does a good job of rejecting adjacent station interference, and the sound is exactly what you’d expect from a 5-inch speaker. Very listenable, but no deep base, subwoofers, bass or treble controls, or anything else. What you hear is what you get.
There is no downloading an app, which seems to be what you need to do these days with almost ANY new thing, from refrigerators to coffee makers to electric drills. No app with this radio. No connecting to the internet. You are at the mercy of whatever is being broadcast on whatever stations you can tune in. Getting used to what radio stations there are in your area, what kind of programming they offer, and where they are on the dial, was at one time part and parcel of broadcast listening. Once again, you are at the mercy of what’s around you. Local newscasts. Local weather. It’s wonderful.
After several decades now of all of these modern listening technologies, my house is pretty much wired for sound. But I’ll find a home for this radio, most likely in my garage, where I spend a lot of time tinkering.

Old school radio for a modern generation

This Panasonic Portable AM/FM Radio sure brings back the nastolgia! It is a simple device, with only one purpose; to listen to the radio!
There is not much involved with this radio. It has a dial scroll digital tuner, a long extendable antenna, a scroll volume wheel, and an am/fm/off slider. It has a light on the front for the digital tuner that comes on when tuned into the strongest signal for that station. It also has a nice foldable carrying handle.
The build quality is really solid. It has a small bit of weight to it, but also not so much that it is cumbersome to carry. The feel of this radio is like they just restarted production from a model in the 80's. The battery door is easy to open and requires four AA batteries to use portable. It does come with a wall plug that plugs into the side of the radio for when you do have power available. It really is perfect for camping, going to the beach, or just hanging out in the back yard. It is also great to have during storms if you are needing to shelter.
The sound is the same as you would expect from a traditional radio from the 80's. It is mostly highs with some mids. It is designed for maximum power efficiency to not drain the four AA batteries quickly. I would recommend using rechargeable batteries. The volume does go pretty loud and is fairly easy to distort if going to high.
Overall, I love that this is just a plain, basic radio. No usb inputs, no bluetooth. A simple design with the nastolgic feeling. I would recommend one for every family.
