Solid Performer With a Few Hiccups

I rate the Nextbase 522GW just shy of 4 stars, but it's a solid performer of a dash cam in any case. Rather than listing all the specs which you can find in the product description, I'll describe here all the shortcomings that prevented me from giving it a 4 or 5 star rating. • No SD card is included • Resolution is 1440p (QHD) instead of 4K • I could not get their app to work on my iPhone 6 Plus, though it it did work on my iPhone 7 • The shape and design would not allow me to mount it as close to the windshield as I'd like. Bringing it close would reduce dashboard glare, though the lens has a built-in polarizer to help reduce that. • Two mounts are included – an adhesive mount and a suction cup mount. I first tried the suction cup mount and once on there, I simply could not disassemble it to to change mounts. I was hesitant to use too much force and damage the cam. • When you initially set up the cam, you can select its time zone by picking your geographic region. But when you review the time zone setting subsequently, you get a UTC offset, as if everyone knows how many hours from UTC their time zone is. • Night time videos lose a bit of sharpness. And like most dash cams, it's difficult to read license plates illuminated by your own car's headlights. • You can download a video player for your computer to playback the cam's video files. Their player is well done and includes a map so you can see the route while you’re watching the videos. However, the app did crash on me when I loaded around 40 files. • There's a typo in the Quick start guide which refers to an incorrect website (www.nextbase.com/getstarted522); should be www.nextbase.com/getstarted522gw None of these are deal killers and they don't prevent me from recommending the dash cam. It has a long list of good features and has, in fact, already replaced my dash cam of another brand.

    Great camera warranty info bad

The camera is great and simple to set up. I added a rearview camera to record out the back window. Pops into the side of the main camera. The suction cup mount is easy to install and remove. Now the bad camera overheats and the battery doesn't charge. I use a U3 sd card. I wrote tech support and they state that using a SanDisk card voids the warranty. Be nice if these people would make that clear before you get your card. Don't see see how a card can cause overheating and the battery to not charge. So be warned you need to get one of the Nextbase overpriced cards I guess. I can only find the 32gb ones. But tech support says the 128gb is available at Best Buy and Walmart. Must be in the UK is where you can get that size.

I will start out by saying this is the 4th dash cam I have owned. So I might not be an expert, but I definitely have some experience with them to compare this one too. Opening up the package you will literally find everything you need to get this camera connected. All of the cables, 2 different mounts, extra double sided tape, and all the manuals you need to get up and running. After unboxing I had this up and running in my car in less than 20 minutes. I have installed these before, so it might have been a little quicker for me, but I would think the average person would have no trouble installing this camera in their car. You simply run the wires along the trim in your car and hide it under door seals and trim work and run it to wherever you want to mount the camera. They even include a tool that makes prying the seals and plastic parts up enough to run the cable. They really thought of everything! Once you get the cables in order its time to set up the camera. You download the all from your app store and then go through a quick and simple setup process. Setting date and time and recording resolution and all that stuff. Then you are pretty much ready to go. You will need to provide your own MicroSD card, but just pop that in, format it, and start driving! The camera will automatically record whenever you drive, and even if you are parked and something hits your car. It will record so you might be able to get a plate number or see the vehicle that hit you. I found the video to be crystal clear and I was easily able to read plate numbers and things of all the cars around me. It adjusted well for day and night time driving. Where this camera really shines is everything that's packed into it! A lot of other cameras I have had you had to buy other modules to attach to them to get GPS and things like that. This one has it all built right in. So while it is recording video it also records your exact location, it knows how fast you were going, tells you the direction you were traveling and literally gives you the exact coordinates of where you were. This information will be very handy should you ever need to go to court or anything over a traffic incident, or even if you get pulled over and a cop says you are going one speed and you were going a different speed. Now you have all the information and video right at your fingertips! I have 2 small gripes about the camera. First of all, the included suction cup mount doesn't work very well. There were numerous times I would be driving down the road and all of the sudden the camera would fall off my windshield and pull all the cable I ran along with it. Not very safe to deal with when you are doing 70 down a freeway. I would recommend using the double sided tape method. So far that has worked better for me. The other thing is not really a gripe, but more of a suggestion to the company. The included cable they give you is to connect to your cigarette lighter. Which is fine, that's universal and will connect to any car. But a lot of modern cars have at least one if not multiple USB ports that can also provide power. It would be nice to include a USB cable for connection and then an adapter that can go from USB to a cigarette lighter. Then people could choose how to connect it. Other than that, this is an amazing dash cam!! I could not recommend this thing enough! It has everything you need in a camera, and records amazing video to boot! If you are looking for a dash cam...get this!!!!!

The only problem is that it doesn't blend in well so depending on your neighborhood, someone might break a window just to take the dashcam unfortunately, and although you'll have footage (especially if you get the rear-facing extension), you'll still have to replace a window. The quality is amazing, and set-up is a breeze and very intuitive. I like the microSD support up to 128GB but I wish it could support more, especially since microSD is a lot more afffordable nowadays. I used to own a $50 dashcam from Amazon, so at 5 times the price I personally expect 5 times the performance and capabilities. I have to say this does seem a bit over priced at $259.99. At the time of writing this review it is on sale for $229.99, but I think if it drops down another $30 to $199.99 it'd be more of an acceptable price point.

If there is one thing I would complain about with the Nextbase - 522GW, it is the duration of the video clips. At only a max of 3 minutes, it takes some time if you have been driving for hours to find the clip you are looking for. Other than that... You have all the bells and whistles you could want. Having telemetry data available with the clips is great if you are fighting a ticket for running a stop sign or just checking that your {other person driving car} is not driving well above the speed limit. Displaying GPS location, time and speed makes for a easy ticket to fight. Catching train videos at railroad crossings is a nice bonus for my youngest son. I have the cam set a 60 FPS for the smoothest video possible. The internal mic does too good of a job picking up sounds. Music on the radio, me singing (which everyone asks me to do solo's, they want me to sing so low they can't hear me) and any conversation going on in the car. BTW, do not play back the audio of what your wife said to her when she says, "I didn't say that." It just is not worth it. The video is smooth and crisp at 1080/60 FPS. Night videos have plenty of halo effect, but that is a given. Luckily I have not tested the impact/emergency feature. Don't want to try that out ever. It is great to have video and audio of anything that could happen and it can be configured to send to whoever you want. You have direct connect wife and Bluetooth connections to grab data or display on your phone. The screen size is just about the right size for something like this. I have seen others with smaller screens and they are not as easy to see. Touch screen controls are a must when navigating, my last dashcam had buttons that made little to no sense on navigating menus. The App is well designed and allows you to change settings from your phone. Connection can be slow at times though. There is a magnetic connection to the mounting bracket. If you use the suction cup to attach to the window, you might pull the bracket off when disconnecting the cam. The bracket has the USB connector for power, the magnetic link passes the power thru. This makes for easy removal of the cam if you want to download to your PC. The cam also has a USB port to connect to PC or laptop or even use in another vehicle.. There is a second way to mount the bracket that is much more permanent, I would recommend finding the right spot with the suction cup before going all in with the glue tape. Overall, I really like this cam. I just hope I never need anything more than train videos off of it.

    Best Dash Cam (Nextbase 522GW)

Unforeseen traveling with my job is why this review is late. However, things have settled down a bit for me to give the Nextbase 522GW a review. Inside the box is the Nextbase 522GW dash cam, the window mount, power cable, USB cable, suction cup type mount, power cable tool to help hide and tuck away the cable, and the usual user manual and documentation. The dash cam was pretty much dead, so I had to charge it up a bit. The build quality of this dash cam is amazing. It's very solid and does not feel cheap in any way. Once charged I was able to connect it through the settings to my wifi network and download the updated firmware. This was a bit tricky and took several tries of turning on and turning off the dash cam in order to download the firmware. Once downloaded, it installed and rebooted the dash cam. During that time I downloaded the MyNextbase Connect app to my iPhone. Once installed and the dash cam rebooted, there was an issue with the app not recognizing or being able to locate my dash cam via Bluetooth, however, after a couple of tries it finally picked up and connected. After connecting it to my power socket in my car and tucking the cord away, I was able to start it up and drive around town. Initally I drove around town at night and everything was as clear as can be. The next I started it up as I made my grueling hour commute to work. It was just as clear and even more vibrant with the sun shining. I must say that I'm very impressed and pleased with the clarity of the camera and the video it records; playback footage is awesome as well. The menu on the dash cam and app were super easy to use once everything connected and synced together. You can set the video to record in either 1440p, 1080p, and at 720p at different FPS. The dash cam surprisingly took up a smaller footprint on my windshield than I initially thought and did not obstruct my view of the road at all or in the way of my rearview mirror. To record and save any video, you will need to purchase a microSD card, which does not come with the dash cam. It supports up to 128GB microSD card. Another great feature that so far I've been thankfully fortunate enough that I haven't had to use is the SOS feature. This feature is to signal emergency services (fire, ems, police, etc.) of your location in the event of an accident. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a nice and sturdy dash cam with endless settings both in the dash cam and the app. Yes there were a couple of hiccups with connection and locating the dash cam initially, however, they seemed to be cleared up after I was able to update the firmware.

It's like watching a scenic hd movie seeing playback from this little camera. If you're like me I've seen countless incidents while driving where I wish I had a camera or video recorder because there's no way people would believe what I just saw! Whether it be day or night and even when raining the video from this camera is crystal clear. Very easy to get started from out of the box to in the car and hitting the road recording your first masterpiece! It has various frame rate and resolutions available depending on whether you want a clearer video with more frames or want to shoot for a longer period of time compromising for a lower resolution. It does have an external memory card slot to give you multiple options as far as size. I love the on screen display. It's easy to read and colorful. All touchscreen which makes everything easy to select and its not all cramped on the screen having everything nicely spaced, especially for those with me with big hands like myself. It has driver assistance and you can even connect other apps. It connects through Bluetooth to your phone and you even have the capability to transfer video captures and send straight to your cell phone. With Alexa voice assist you can ask it for directions and with me I use and love Waze so it pulls up my app instantly for me. You can make calls from it as well and with two internal mic slots on the front, the sound quality is excellent! It does have the option to get a rear facing camera also. I'd highly recommend this camera it's my new favorite tech toy Under the driving assistance menu is one of the best features I found on this was its SOS mode which automatically notifies emergency medical services in the case of crash detection. If you go into the app on your phone you can put in all sorts of helpful criteria in case you're unable to communicate when they get to you. Such as Car make and model, color, also personal things such as your blood type, and even next of kin or in case of emergency contact person.

The Nextbase - 522GW Dash Cam is a great dash cam that is high quality, easy to set up and great for that added piece of mind while on the road. The Nextbase comes with all the cables and mounts you need to get it up and running. It even comes with a plastic panel tool to help you route the cable around the windshield. You also get your choice of using the suction mount or the 3M mount. Set up is easy and video quality is excellent. Make sure you pick up a good quality SD card to store the footage. I've had no issues with this dash cam and I can't express enough how nice it is to have this in my truck. You never know when something is going to happen, and in the event of an accident it can be invaluable to have video evidence of the incident. I definitely recommend this product.

The Nextbase 522GW is a nice, compact dash camera that records very good quality video and has a lot of options and features that help it stand out from others. When you open the box, you are struck by the quality of both the camera and the mounting options included. Whether you want to stick the camera to the windshield, use the suction adapter or mount it to the dash itself, all the pieces are included to complete the installation. After charging, installing a microSD card (NOT INCLUDED!) and installing the app on a smartphone, you are all ready to get going. While the app is not required, some of the features such as accident reporting and other things are not available without it. After installation, you can begin using the camera for recording forward video of your driving and have security footage of events that may happen while parked. The video is clear and has good colors. I was able to see details of cars and people from quite a distance, successfully accomplishing its primary purpose. In comparison to a much cheaper dash cam from another company, the video was far superior in every way. There are a couple of things that might stand in the way of someone purchasing this for their vehicle. The first is the price! Obviously, at this price one would expect the quality of the output. I was disappointed that they don't include any microSD card at all in the box, so you can't even test it without installing one. I ended up getting a 128GB card rated at or above their recommendations and it has worked very well with no stuttering while recording. It would also be nice if they included a wiring option to hardwire into the vehicle so there would not be cables dangling down in the way. I ended up getting a very nice quality kit for about $15 from another website. The second that I ran into is kind of unique possibly, and that is a lack of providing any backup camera ability on my truck. I hadn't thought of the backup module not being waterproof as almost all of the others I had looked at that had backup cameras available were rated to be waterproof. The Nextbase backup module is intended only for interior installations, so spending the extra $100 to get a backup camera option added to my 522 will only duplicate what my eyes can already see through the back window! This will only affect truck owners since a regular vehicle's rear window is at the very back of the vehicle, so the rear camera can see very well. Because of this one "flaw" I will be installing this permanently on my wife's vehicle and will install another option on my truck. I wish they offered a waterproof option as that would really make this a perfect solution for my needs. Overall, I was pretty happy with the features and quality of the 522GW, the few things I could find that I wasn't happy with were really things that were either unique to my install, or were clear on the packaging. Just don't forget to pick up a fast microSD card before you go home with your purchase!

    Best Dash Cam Yet

I've had a couple Nextbase camera and this is my favorite of them! As usual the video quality is very good. I'm able to read license plates in good light and can also read them if I'm a little closer in dim light. One nice thing is the addition of a polarizing filter on the front. During setup the directions suggest putting a piece of paper on your dash in sunlight and then adjust until the reflection disappears. Just like high-end sunglasses the polarizing filter makes a big difference in bright daylight and eliminates most of the glare I have with other cameras. Installation can be easy or complex, depending on how much of a stickler you are for seeing the cable and how to route it. The camera comes with a very long cable that goes from the camera to a cigarette lighter type outlet. I'm fortunate that my car has a hidden 12v outlet under the dash on the passenger side (Most BMWs do, check under the dash behind the glove box, it's not well known) so I am able to run power from there. I don't like running the cable through the headliner in the front as I'm concerned it'll interfere with the front curtain airbags in a crash, so I ended up installing it right of center closer to the dash. Since it's out of reach while I'm driving, this is where the Alexa integration comes in. On other cameras you usually have to push a button to preserve a recording from being ovrwritter. With Alexa enabled (this is optional) you can simply tell the camera to preserve the recording, or to even stop or start recording or take a picture. Pretty slick! This, of course, requires setting up the camera with a smartphone and will also enable things like asking Alexa to play music through the phone to bluetooth like any other Echo device. Speaking of recording, be sure to get a good, high speed microSD card when you purchase the unit. It requires a better quality fast card to work. While this is a front-only camera it will work with optional reverse-view cameras to record the car's cabin or out the back window for the rear-view. The 522GW is quite a bit bigger than my other Nextbase camera, probably because of the wireless connectivity and additional hardware for Alexa, but it still isn't too big. There's a battery inside and you can set the camera to wake up if your car is jostled while parked and unattended to hopefully catch any nefarious activity when you are away. I would highly recommend making sure you have a good dashcam to protect yourself and this one fits the bill!

Installation of this cam is easy with the included power adapter and mounting base. Once setup and a MicroSD memory card has been installed (which it doesn't come with) it's pretty much ready to go and will always be ready to record when you're on the road. The image quality is great and is more than sufficient for proving fault in an accident or even just as a cam to record your adventure. The really wide angle is nice and captures both sides of the road. It adjusts brightness and saturation/tone automatically and actually works really well at night! Don't expect it to "see in the dark" but it will record almost just as you see it as you are driving. The cam allows you to download the videos via Wifi and the Bluetooth connectivity enables the SOS/Alexa features to work as well. The Alexa feature is cool for checking the weather or asking questions but it won't do Navigation. Downloading videos is a snap with the app over the Wifi connection making it easy to gather the video and cut what you want out of it. The unit does get a bit hot but so far I haven't noticed any issues. The screen is big and bright with a much better image than I thought it'd have!! Very impressed there. Taking/snapping pictures while driving is as simple as tapping the middle of the screen. You can easily expand this system so that you have a rear cam with the same video quality as the front. I think that having the second cam is not necessary but sure makes it nice knowing that both directions are covered by video. For other features, the SOS is awesome knowing that you have peace of mind in an accident that emergency services will be contacted unless you stop it on your phone when it prompts. The other thing that's cool and works pretty well is the Intelligent parking where it records if the cam detects movement of your vehicle. In short, I'd definitely recommend this camera for anyone looking to protect themselves, their car and family.

I had been looking at dashcams for a while and what I liked about the Nextbase models was the magnetic mounting. I sometimes park in questionable neighborhoods so I like the ease of removing it and taking it with me when I park, The set up was simple and it seems to give quality video. I have not needed to download any of the video to a computer so I don't know about the ease of that. I think the regular price is a little high but I bought it on a $100 off sale so I believe I got good value. Also what I like is that there are no external buttons - just touch screen.

This is by far the most technically advanced, feature-packed dash cam I've ever come across. Sure I've only had one in my lifetime, but I've shopped around and had been waiting to try the new Nextbase models once they arrived here in the US. The filming quality and resolution are stunning; the touch screen and functionalities are so easy to manage; the Alexa feature is SO convenient, and I tested the file share to my app - it was sent to my phone in SECONDS! I know I sound a bit overly excited here, but if you want a dash cam in your car that has all of the latest options available, this is the one for you. I would say they also have a few other options at lower price points that I'd expect to be just as good, but probably don't have every option on the 522GW. I didn't get to try the SOS option, but I feel safer driving alone knowing it is there . Also it comes with a built-in polarizing filter, which takes away from the reflection of the windshield, and I'd definitely suggest that!

Peace of mind while on the road

This is just the item I was looking for to add to my truck. For the peace of mind while on the road. This dash camera has quite a few features that make it a good product. The most impressive thing about it is that is has a polarizing filter installed on the lens. Why is this a great feature? It allows you to cut out the glare of your dash on the windshield while recording your driving. This greatly improves image quality that will help in the event that you need to use footage for insurance purposes. Other features include the ability to use it with Alexa app on your phone, 3 different recording time lengths so that you can capture more time of driving to make sure you have what is needed in the event of an accident. There is also an app that is quite handy for things like sending a video to your insurance company or another person via a feature call incident aware. There is also a feature in the app that allows you to store videos in the library of the app. I guess you could use this to save videos of a trip and then add them to a video for others to watch. I haven't fully tried this feature. The one downside that I have had is the tape that is used to secure it to the windshield of my truck. It sticks to the windshield just fine; however, it didn't seem to want to stay stuck the camera mounting base at all. I have entered my vehicle several times to find the camera hanging in space. This may just be user error on my part. But even using a different double sided tape type of fastener I still have achieved the same result.

I would recommend this to a friend
