This camera is everything I was expecting and more. Having been looking at other brand cameras I decided the Nikon D800E was the best way to go. Having higher megapixels and color depth advantage compared to other cameras was a big plus for me. Price point packaged with the 24-85mm FX lense reeled me in.

Great camera for landscapes and general shooting needs. High res allows for large prints and tight crops. Not good for action and sports due to low frame rate--only 4 frames/sec. Rugged and well designed.

I'm enjoying the camera and am still learning how to use it. The pictures are crisp and clear. I enjoy getting a lot of the width in the pictures. Overall a great camera.

The D800 is an incredible camera. The picture quality is the best I've seen in the Nikon digital lineup.

    GREAT CAMERA FOR A PRO

Just a couple of years ago a 24MP D3X would cost you over $7000. Now a D800E with 36 MP can be up for grabs for more than half of that, and even lower price if you go with refurbished or used models. 36MP can be good for people who print big, enables a lot of room for crops. It can be a burden for regular people just shooting candid pictures, huge file sizes, requires faster cards, need more hard drives etc. Great camera for pros, incredible sensor that gives you a lot of sharp details in a wide dynamic range. It can get noisy at higher ISOs above 3200, but when you downsample 36MP files it gets very clean and highly usable. I get lots of usable shots even at 6400. However it seems to eat up battery quite a lot faster compared to D700, it has a very slow frame rate, the shutter is loud even though not as bad as a D700 and its autofocus performance leaves a lot to be desired. AF in low light can hunt a bit, and the AF accuracy and consistency is not on par with the D4. Just shoot a couple more to make sure you get one with proper focus. This can be the result of faulty focus issues out of the camera, but even after having it repaired by Nikon I can still feel it's not consistent all the time. The LCD sometimes has a greenish tint which can be disturbing to skin tones. I also dislike the fact that it's using 2 storage formats, a SD and a CF. The fastest SD is yet to catch up to CF, so having 2 formats limits your speed down to the slower SD, and kind of loses the point of having a CF (if you are in backup shooting mode). It complicates things, just like D4's XQD and CF, very annoying and doesnt provide any kind of bonus other than SD cards are a lot cheaper to get. Overall this is a great camera with awesome sensor. Its ergonomics can be improved, still feels very dated like the D700.

Nikon's Best yet, image quality is unsurpassed

I am a serious amateur who upgraded from a Nikon D300 to this beauty 3 days prior to leaving for Glacier National Park. After a week and 1200 images, I can honestly say my new D800e has exceeded my expectations. I shot mostly landscapes with a 24-70 2.8 Nikon lens. A few times when I saw wildlife, There was no time to switch to my telephoto so I just made the shot anyway. I was completely taken by surprise to see how clear a heavily cropped and blown-up image was! Folks, there's a reason the files are huge...there is a TON of resolution at 36mp! Be prepared to increase your memory card and photo storage drive sizes to handle the D800e, but in my view it is very much worth it.

    Best bang for the buck

I have had this camera for a few weeks now. I moved up from a D300. While I still enjoyed the other camera, I wanted to move up to the Full Frame format. I have taken quite a few pictures and while they are extremely large, especially after "playing" with them in PS. The quality of the shots is unmatched. I was looking for months since the announcements and opted for the E, as I primarily take natural pictures and very little "man made" objects. The moire will not be an issue for me. I was thinking about the D4 before I purchased this one, but extremely happy I went in this direction. Now I just have to add a few full frame lens. arggg, the wife'll kill me.

I've waited patiently for this camera (my old one is D200 purchased new) and when it arrived I couldn't wait to start shooting. The quality of the photographs is exceptional, the ease of use nothing short of lovely. Haven't done much with the video yet, but my customers are thoroughly pleased with my upgrade.

    Huge leap over the D700

I am coming from a D700, and got this to take my photography to the next level. (Time lapse, Video Etc, massive resolution for awesome cropping.) And the D800E exceeded all of my exceptions, the time lapse feature was so easy to use, the 1080P video looks great, the 36 MP resolution looks incredibly sharp when paired with my 28mm 1.8, and 180mm 2.8. I am a happy camper here. Mine came with the firmware update, so no early release issues.

    The best DSLR yet

I had high hopes for this camera and it has already produced images that will rival any MF camera. The sharpness is wonderful, but the DR will amaze you! Two years ago I never would've believed DSLR technology would come this far this quickly? I honestly wasn't excited about having to deal with 36MP, but I'm converted now. It's really nice to have all this extra room to work with or crop, if you decide. One thing I wish Nikon would've done is to have the control panel display the ISO setting by default. I do not like having to hit the ISO button to check. I'm not a high ISO guy so I couldn't tell you how it does in low light? I'm going to buy two more of these bodies when they become available. Otherwise, this is the best camera I've ever owned. 9 out 10 rating

Amazing dynamic range and detail, fantastic value

The D800E is a phenomenal value in that it is capable of delivering stunning image quality and offers a bounty of features and controllability. One has to be disciplined to get the best out of the camera- The high pixel count reveals faults of lenses and technique. I feel it's a camera for the photographer that is keenly aware of f-stop, shutter speed, ISO sensitivity, white balance, focus-mode and how the variances in these settings influence the outcome. The autofocus is fantastic. Switching modes on the fly is simple and intuitive. The ability to focus at - 2EV is truly impressive. (Basically it can see in dim moonlight). Live View almost always yields a sharper result but is slower and drains the battery more quickly. A note about Live View- If you're a night/ astro photographer you'll probably be dismayed at the noise level conveyed in the monitor. I can however, rely on Live View even with the ugly and distracting noise to see a distant star and digitally zoom in on it to sharpen the focus. If you tend to shoot textiles frequently, be aware that moiré will occur, especially at sharper apertures but it's fairly easy to contend with in post-processing. I wouldn't recommend the D800E for video, instead look to the D800 which reduces the occurrence of moiré at a very very slight decrease in sharpness. The RAW files are huge- 77MB out of the camera definitely tax the average computer and will gobble up space on small hard drive quickly. There is however a luxury in being able to aggressively crop should you need to "digitally zoom in" on certain images. I can't speak for JPEG images as I always shoot RAW. If you don't have the capability to process the images in post with a fairly powerful computer I wouldn't recommend this camera.

I have never seem photos with this much detail from any DSLR. The images are absolutely incredible. I've been shooting portraits the last few weeks with the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8, this lens has never created images with such stunning detail and background separation. If you get the Nikon D800/D800e you will not be disappointed, it is a game changer.

    It's like catching a Great White ....

After waiting 31/2 months for my D800E I must say it was worth the wait. I have been shooting with Nikon professionally for over forty years, and this is a crowing achievement (maybe). I learned on a 4x5 view camera, and later a 'basic' Nikon F. I have to say I still love the purity of the basic camera, where you have to think before you release the shutter and you really 'make a photograph'. When it takes an almost 450 page manual to explain all the functions, features and magic (as the D800E does) it seems like technology has gone way too far .. but then again, I love my new D800E .. don't ask why .. I just do. When a secure knowledge of photography is coupled with this technological masterpiece, magic can and does happen. This is not a camera for beginners, or rich hobbyists, but a tool for those willing to make the effort to understand it, and utilize the brilliance contained within.

    Failed to impress

Hoped the Nikon 800E would yield sharper pictures vs the 800, sadly it failed to impress. I mostly take micro shots. None of my shots are usable, even on a tripod, pro lens, daylight, and no wind...the ideal shooting conditions. It also has difficulty focusing half the time. I don't shoot video much, but I did like the quality. Though, I think one can get the same quality for less $. As a dedicated nikon user, I wish this camera lived up to the hype so I could save money on a pro cam. Since the camera had difficulty focusing and pictures were a bit fuzzy, it went back. I noticed the camera I ordered came from best buy return center, so I can't say it was fresh when it arrived. Since best buy gave me grief about the return even though they erroneously sent the wrong camera and then had to wait months till the 800e was in stock, I will likely take my business elsewhere.

I was really looking forward to updating my camera but $3,300.00 is way too much for something that can't focus correctly when using the spot focus.
