Customers are saying

Customers have good things to say about the exploration, planets, open world, and universe size in No Man’s Sky, frequently citing the vastness and enjoyment of exploring the game's many planets and universe. However, many find the gameplay repetitive and lacking in content, with some also criticizing the game's story and value for the price. The sheer scale of the game's universe is a major draw for many players, but this is often offset by concerns about repetitive gameplay mechanics.

    A work in progress

This game had so much hype attached to it I had to pick it up. It's basically a minecraft game for bigger kids. I love the ability to search planets and the vastness of the galaxy is astounding. But now to the bad parts: It's extemely repetitive and the flora and fauna you find are all too much alike. With the expanse of an entire galaxy to explore you only run into three different forms of intelligent life. Again very repetitive. No multiplayer brings home the idea that while you can interact with the traders for parts and ships, you can't help but feel the heavy weight of the loneliness of space. All in all it's a good game to check out though. However I'm hoping that the future will bring about DLC that will alleviate the redundancy of the gameplay.

The game is now full of the content you expected from the hype. And now its also got multiplayer. Its a lot of fun as a survival game now, with much more content and base building and things to do.

Not Worth Your Time or Money

I was excited to buy this game. I had not even heard of it until about a week before it's release and thought it looked interesting. I am absolutely fascinated by space exploration, so this seemed right up my alley. After playing about 5 hours, I found myself asking, "So....what else?" The novelty of being able to fly anywhere wore off quick due to the repetitive nature of the game. You fly from planet to planet to collect resources so you can upgrade your ship. You use those upgrades to fly to new planets to collect resources to upgrade your ship. You use those upgrades to fly to new planets to collect resources to upgrade your ship...for the entirety of the game. The end goal is to reach the center of the universe. The original promises were that as you got closer to the universe, the game got more interesting. Well...it doesn't. And for those of you looking to sink your time into your game, I would HIGHLY recommend spoiling the center of the universe for yourself and looking up a video on it. Once you see what's there...you decide if it's worth your time to do it yourself. After about 15 hours of playtime, I had to know if continuing was worth it and I looked up the "ending." As soon as I saw what it was, I turned off the game and haven't touched it since. I would only recommend buying this if it's less than $10 and you know what your'e getting. It's fun for a few hours when everything is new, but it wears thin very quickly.

No Man's Sky is a cool game in a lot of ways but gets old pretty quick. After about 5-10 hours, I started questioning what is the point. The planets, ships, plants, and animals were all really amazing but I set it aside because I just didn't see that point of playing. Why do I need to get to the center of the galaxy? Why spend the time to farm endless resources on various planets just to get a ship with one more slot? If it had more of a story (or any really), It would be amazing.

Only get this game if you like exploring, period. There is a minor story, but the beauty of this game is in space exploration. Though, it can become repetitive.

Good game but extremely repetitive. To the point of boredom. Excellent premise and a huge sandbox to explore. But it literally is the same thing over and over

I enjoy the game; for me it is a chill game to enjoy on the side of all the other games I purchase and try to play. It is what it is...exploration; hunting/gathering, etc, etc, etc....is it perfect? No. Is it fun? Yes. But you cannot get into all the hype. I long for the days of gaming from my childhood and that is how I am handling this game....ignoring all the write ups on-line and just playing and discovering on my own; we could not "Google" the answers before and at times I get frustrated with how everyone simply does that; just sit back and enjoy this chill game.

Was so excited for this game and kept my expectations low too. Right off the bat I couldn't stop playing. Discovering new planets and animals and naming them was awesome. But after a while you realized that it's not just the map that is some algorithm. The animals start to look familiar too. Like the head, torso, and legs are pre made and then randomly smacked together. Then upgrading to the end game can be done sooooo easily that then it become pointless to spend the days it take just to fly to the center of the universe. A lot of potential but not enough content

This game is a bit of a mixed bag. On paper it's great... In practice, not so much. It's essentially an endless loop of looking for goods to enable travel to the next planet, traveling to the next planet, and then, you guessed it, looking for more goods to enable travel to the next planet. The developer has announced patches and further updates so maybe this game will improve over time... Only time will tell. Probably worth buying if it is on sale.

Short on purpose or motivation, No Man's Sky is flys short of being great. It's not bad, but lack of major story or purpose keeps it from being great.

What can I say that hasn't already been said about this game? It's a technological marvel. It runs well. Amazing in many ways. Core game play is lacking though. While there's lots of busy work, there's just not enough to actually do. The central conceit wears thin quickly. On all the gorgeous (and they are gorgeous) procedurally generated worlds, you will find the same (very simple, very repetitive) structures. Kind of sucks you out of it.

I have around 10 hours into this game and I'm enjoying it. The planets are gorgeous, although not all of them, and the creatures and plants you find on the planets are very alien in nature. There is a redundancy of plants and alien creatures that you find throughout the galaxies, which is slightly disappointing. There are also a lot of repetitive tasks that you have to do in the game, which can get annoying. However, the game is great for a chill experience exploring the cosmos and mining for exotic elements to update your spacecraft and spacesuit in hopes of finding the center of the galaxy. I would recommend to anyone looking for a chilled out, space exploring experience.

I think my thoughts are going to be echoed by everyone else but I was so excited for this game and it didn't even come close to justifying the hype. I was planning on losing myself for hours on end exploring a vast galaxy and then you turn it on and after a few hours you realize it's just the same thing over and over again. It's not terrible but it's not what we were lead to believe it would be. Hello Games owes everyone an apology.

This game had so much promise. It still could some day live up to it. But i doubt it will. So much would have to be changed. The world generation is an engine that could be used to so much effect. However, worlds start to look the same, gameplay is amazingly shallow and the story is basically non-existent. Wait til its $20 as its worth it at that price as you can likely have 10-20 hours of entertainment just wandering around.

my boyfriend had been hyped up about getting this game for over a good year! and when he finally got it, which I preorder, I could tell he wasn't impressed. Like he was way more pumped then he should have been because sadly it did not meet his expectations. He says it is fun for the first couple hours, then it is extremely boring. It just wasn't really the game he thought it to be, and was ultimately let down :/

This game has a great premise. Flying a spaceship from planet to planet is exciting. When you land on that planet you will be collecting minerals, collecting more minerals, and crafting. You don't get to be creative and craft what you want though. The exploration is somewhat fun, but having to recharge you suit and items every few minutes gets old fast. This game could turn into something great at some point. Right now it's only half there. It's like mine craft if you didn't use creativity and craft awesome things.

I was one of the people who got on the hype train and was blown away by the concept of this game. It seemed like the most amazing open world game ever created. And it is... Sort of. The enormity of the game creates its own unique feel, but after several planets and seeing a minimal amount of diversity between environment, creatures, and game play, it began to feel like a little too much of the same. I still enjoy playing it and I will see if it improves as I get closer to the center. I would say it is basically on par with Minecraft with its ability to just chill out and play without a tremendous amount of purpose.
