After Breaking the Waves, Dancer in the Dark, Dogville, Anti-christ and others, you really have to wonder what director Lars von Trier's mother did to him. It really often just sucks to be a female in Lars' upside-down but always intensely cinematic worlds. The exploitative title and lurid story line move in surprising directions with some real stand out performances from the large cast. Uma Thurman is GREAT in her one incredible scene. Christian Slater delivers a strong turn as a man who is terminally ill and Stellan Skarsgard is memorable as the patient listener to brave Charlotte Gainsbourg's kinky exploits. While there's some redundancy in narrative points and a few too many obvious erotic "set pieces" designed to shock the demure, Nymphomaniac has an engrossing tone that, like a car accident, is hard to look away from. There's a chronic urgency to everything that keeps most of the film compelling as Lars makes another attempt to struggle with understanding human despair and loneliness. Not for everyone and certainly not the director's best (or worst} work, there's enough here to chew on that makes it worthwhile and memorable. Keep in mind, this film is unrated and sexually graphic so folks that are uncomfortable with that sort of imagery should stay away.

von Trier never really makes movies that are easy to watch, but they explore different parts of the human psyche, and this film does that as well. If you aren't a fan of his work, this won't really hook you, but if you are already into what he does, this fits the bill.

Originally I purchased this because of the cover...intriguing. Turned out to be a decent story that is part of the Lars Von Trier trilogy of Antichrist and Melancholia. Also, this was one of the movies that came out right before Shia LaBeouf went strange.

Don't let the 5 hour run time chase you away, this film is worth every minute. Great, but disturbing story. NOT MEANT FOR CHILDREN!! This is a stunning movie but put the kids to bed before watching.

This isn't the sort of movie that one sees very often. It seems to avoid genre-typing. The movie's graphicness may not be to everyone's liking, but the acting and storyline of both movies is very good.

Movie looks great on blu. But this is one of those movies that's hard to watch. Not much replay value if you make it through one sitting. The acting is great, but a harsh storyline.

This is a great film for Lars Von Trier fans. Not so great if you're not. Stacy Martin shines as the breakout performance, while Charlotte Gainsbourg is kind of ho-hum.

Involving, sometimes slow, story of following a woman's journey. I'm interested in anything Lars von Trier makes.

This film is definitely not for everyone. I have watched all of Lars's other films in this trilogy, and can say I have enjoyed this very artistic film series.

This was an impulse buy.
I saw the title and couldn't resist it.
When I got it home I told her:
"The title reminded me of my "High School sweetheart".
She said: "Hey, I thought I was your High School sweetheart?"
I told her 'She was, and she still is".
This is s great date night Video.
Actually its several great date nights.
Watch this with someone who loves you.

It's a dark and quite riveting thriller of an erotic variety. The sensuality of Emmanuelle that has some over the top moments of an adult nature. This isn't for the faint of heart and does carry quite a dark take on the world of obsession and the one of mental illness

This is one of the most controversial films to be produced within the confines of Motion Picture Cinema. It also stands it's ground as a brilliant character study of Joe, the namesake Nymphomaniac.
The Blu-ray picture quality is very high, with bitrates reaching an average of 35mbps. The audio quality is also great for both discs. The special features are simple, but the upcoming director's cut should surely make up for the lack of in this set.

Wow... Was not expecting such a graphic movie sold at Best Buy. This movie could have easily been given an "X" rating. The 2 movies (Part 1 and 2) are both VERY LONG and SLOW MOVING.
The movies tells a story about a female who is a nymphomaniac and shows each step along the way. I was surprised at what the movie actually showed.

I love the way this movie begins
With distance sounds of a train and water dripping and then The story begins.
There is nudity , some funny and some not so funny, downright painful. And it all has to do with things that really happen in real life.
It's worth watching and you'll be surprised.
