The Return of the Classic JRPG

Many have tried, many have failed. While there are a lot of games like Octopath Traveler, games trying to rekindle the nostalgia we have for classics such as Chrono Trigger and Earthbound, Octopath Traveler actually succeeds at this and forges its own path to JRPG must have status. Each individual story is personal & done incredibly well, the combat is slick & polished, the music is outstanding, and the graphics are equal parts old school and new school. If you own a Switch, you owe it to yourself to buy Octopath Traveler.

Octopath Traveler has a lot going for it, both good and bad. The graphics, music, and combat system are all spectacular. The break system in combat specifically really makes me feel like I control the ebb and flow of battle. The story however is also a throwback, and it could be tied together a lot more cohesively. Lot of tired stereotypes and not a lot of sense in some parts. Still if you are looking to get lost in an engrossing adventure that will occupy your time for dozens of hours, then this is a great option.

Feels like an old school JRPG but with a modern twist. Every character really feels unique with great voice acting during their cutscenes (in-battle voice work can get repetitive. The break system adds some new strategy to the fighting style.
It has a similar feel (graphically) to Final Fantasy 6 (3 on the SNES in the US) but with some really cool effects that make it feel less 2D.
Charming, fun, visually interesting. I absolutely recommend this if you like the classic turn-based JRPG game.

This game was probably my most pleasant surprise of 2018. I love old school sprite based jRPG games. This basically seeks to create a game in the old sprite-based style, but full of modern improvements to the environmental graphics while adding in nice touches voice acting and an amazing soundtrack. Very engaging battle system and class system, and some of the late/endgame bosses provide a nice challenge. If you like RPGs at all, do not hesitate and buy this game immediately, you won't regret it.

If you are looking for a classic looking JRPG with some modern enhancements this is the game to get. The Nintendo Switch has a dearth of good JRPG games, this game us a must get for any JRPG enthusiast. The battle system is dynamic, characters memorable, and the path system is interesting, forcing you to make choices for short term benefit over reputation. The music and graphics are amazing the listen and watch.
Any one who enjoys JRPGs and a Nintendo Switch should get this game.

Probably my favorite game from the past few years (at least rpg-wise). The old style turn based system with it's quirky boost style strategy is truly a fun concept to play with! The visuals and music we're just top notch and anyone who sylays otherwise is simply lacking in knowledge of the game style and taste. Though the story and game play was quite long, I was hoping for more in depth character interactions and even a deeper progression. Here's to hoping for a sequel!

This game is an amazing classical JRPG brought into the new era.
8 characters, each with their own main story (no connection/overarching story here but it doesn’t need it).
Each character has their own class/job and can equip one of 12 subjobs (which changes their appearance). You can freely change your job to learn passive abilities for keeps for a myriad of set ups.
Bravely Default style battles with boosting BP (but can’t go negative).
Wonderful and fitting music.

FFI was the first game I remember playing on NES - so it may be a bit of nostalgia talking but this game feels like home. This is one of the best JRPG's I've played in a long while. It has that old feel of unlocking a world full of danger and new skills but ... the battle system feels familiar while being fresh, new, and just ridiculously fun. You can't just ham fist your way through with OP brute force - you must strategize within the breaking system, time your buffs, donate charged attacks, and unlock the weaknesses of your foes. There are unlimited paths to victory but it doesn't come easily every time - making the harder battles so satisfying. Admittedly, it can be a bit of a slog for the first couple of hours - it really pick up as you fill out your party so you can more easily breeze through everyone's opening chapters without too much grind. Also keep in mind that who you start with is permanently locked in your party so make sure you pick someone you could not do without as the first character chapter you begin. (No one told me this before I started.) The random encounters aren't too excessive - thought I have a passive [scholar] skill that makes them less frequent. My only complaint is that the Old English voice acting for one of the story lines is kind of annoying. Im going to switch the VA to Japanese when I remember to do so.

I’m an intermediate gamer and video games cost a lot of money. So when I spend $60 on a game, I want to make sure I get my monies worth. This game is worth the price!
I’m not a fan of RPGs but this game became one of my favorites. I like the retro 16bit style of it, the soundtrack is amazing, and the story is fun. I really didn’t expect that I’d be enjoying the game this much even when I’m frustrated that progressing within the game can feel slow.

This game is awesome. It looks very beautiful with the old 16 bit graphics combined with modern effects and 3d scenery to really make it pop. The music is so relaxing and the game in general is as well. It has 8 characters to play, you get to meet and play them all and the story arch for each is pretty deep. It's just full of charm and I can't get enough. It reminds me of my days of youth playing old final fantasy games and other rpgs. Would highly recommend.

I am 45 hours into this game, and I am still enjoying it quite a bit. The game follows a very predictable formula - A character enters a cut scene, you go to a dungeon, fight a boss, and back to a cut scene. I find most of the character stories to be compelling, but I wish the dialogue was broken into smaller segments. Sometimes I find myself avoiding continuing on a characters quest, because I know I'm about to spend up to 15 minutes receiving dialogue and cut scenes.
I think the combat system is incredible. I also like that monster encounters happen far less often than other games, but, the battles are significantly longer.
I think the game is a bit easy, I was completing recommended level 45 bosses in my early 30s. I

It's odd how the most basic looking square enix game to come out in a while also seems the most polished. There are 8 full campaigns in this game. The battle system is a fun mix of old favorites and Bravely Default from the 3DS days. The music is great. The visuals grow on you. This is the first RPG I actually feel like finishing in a long time. If you have a Switch and have enjoyed RPGs in the past, this is a no-brainer.

I haven't played this game for as long as I'd like to have, maybe 20 hours so far, but it has been a pleasure.
I love the turn base battles. While I can get behind an action JRPG, that old school turn base system is for me. It feels pretty modern still too. I will say that the game doesn't seem to change things up too much in terms of the battle system, unlike games like Persona Five. If you want something interesting, nostalgic and not super complex, try this out.
I adore the graphics. That 2.5D game play is lovely. If you like sprite work, you'll probably like the visual aesthetic of this. The character models and the backgrounds are all incredibly charming. It reminded me of Final Fantasy 6 SNES (Final Fantasy 3 in the US), but with some slight 3D aspects and crisper graphics.
If you don't like games with that aesthetic of the 90s --those Super Nintendo RPGS-- and if you don't like turn-based combat, a bit of grinding, then you might prefer a game like Ys or something much more modern. I imagine most people who look at this know what they are getting though. The Switch cart has the full game. I like having physical games so I'm glad to have this in my collection

Really enjoyed my first play through and wish I hadn't traded the game in after. Very unique art and game style, so much love was put into the story and character development. Battle is standard turn based, simple to learn but descriptively complex once you get into it.
Hang on to your copy so you don't have to buy it again a few years later like me.

Though it may appear to be simple and have the asthetics of a classic SNES or PS One game, Octopath Traveler is about as deep and slick as most any modern JRPG. The story is well written, presentation is pleasing on a nostalgic level, and the combat system is so varied and carefully thought out and about every fight is highly engaging. Would highly recommend for almost any Nintendo Switch collector.

Words cannot describe how amazing Octopath Traveler is. It truly shines not only as a great JRPG, but also one of the best games ive played in a long time. Great story, lots of characters to choose from, a classic but intuitive battle system, and a great soundtrack. If you are a fan of classic RPGs like final fantasy, xenogears or wild arms, this is a great choice for you to pick up and play.

I have been playing Octopath Traveler non-stop since it released and I have not even scratched the surface of this game! The game does not have an overall ultimate plot like most JRPG's, instead it has 8 different plots for 8 different characters, allowing you to play out the stories in which ever order you desire. Thus far, each characters story has been enjoyable and are not heavily cliche'd like other games. The voice acting is good for the most part and there are a lot of side stories to interact with.
The visuals in this game are amazing as they bring back so many memories of JRPG classics but now in HD-2D. The water, snow, sun rays, and desert sand effects are beautiful and deserve praise. The character sprites and cities look good and are well designed. The music is amazing and different regions have different battle music, making battles so much more bearable. The combat is great too as you get to set up a 4 man team and battle how you like, but remember whomever you start with will always be in your team. The combat takes notes from bravely default and you can stack up extra actions, which can be used to deal tons of damage, or prevent an enemies from using their ultimate attacks on you. My only complaint is that enemies do not have health bars, making certain battles that much harder. Lastly- ensure you are properly leveled for each region or you will get obliterated, no joke.

Harkening back to the RPGs of old, yet included many modern refinements, Octopath Traveler has old-fashioned yet striking visuals, an amazing soundtrack, and excellent voice work. Featuring a fun and strategic combat system and out-of-combat "path actions" to interact with NPCs, there's a lot to do. If you like old-school RPGs, this is a breath of fresh air.

Only a few hours into the game, but I already like it more than I thought I would. I was hesitant to pay so much for 8 bit graphics (I ended up using a coupon) but it is 2018 8 bit. Everything moves, and the atmosphere is on full display whether that is fog, sparkling snow, or a forest that seems to come alive.
One aspect to the game that I really had no idea would even be a factor is the music. I started as the hunter, and I found myself just setting the game aside and letting the music play in the background. It made me regret not getting the special edition of this game when it came out, because I wanted that musical score on the cd! I even fell asleep to the song at one point!
The gameplay is fun, and the story is interesting, if a little disjointed so far. It is quite odd to be on one path and suddenly meet another 'party' member and start there story. It isn't necessarily a negative, just something that takes getting used to.
My only complaint would be that I had to look up how some of the game mechanics worked, because some things just worked obvious or intuitive.
Some of the best bits of this game are the player abilities that you can use on npc's around the world. It adds another layer of depth on top of an already intriguing game. Get it!

Gameplay is unique, story for primrose is adult theme, graphics are not what I expected but it blends well with the overall world and combat system. My finale thoughts for hours of gameplay/ 8 characters would be to anyone who loves square enix, pick this RPG up you will not be disappointed, highly recommended.
