Octopath takes the classic Final Fantasy formula, adds Bravely Default elements, and adds some new features. The only issue I have with this game is the lack of interconnected storylines but the individual stories are very well done. The battles aren't simple attack spamming either, you have to exploit weaknesses and be involved with the process. You can lose to a simple enemy by being careless. Very well done game and the visuals are stunning for a retro style game

Successful Melding of Old and New

This game brings back the classic RPG style for the new age. While maintaining the aesthetics of classic 16bit RPGs, this title introduces modern elements like psuedo-3D, voice acting, an orchestrated soundtrack and lots of modern effects such as light bloom, shaders and particle effects. There are few things that can be leveled as genuine critisism against this game. Most of them are things that either newer gamers balk at, or things that older gamers have become impatient about. They are as follows: Older graphics While I personally LOVE them, there are those that aren't fans of the "blocky" style. While I respect that, you better not come at me with that arguement while playing Minecraft. Specific Save Points While there is one in every area, this game lacks the "save from a menu" feature that has become a staple in RPGs of late. The game autosaves every time you enter a new area, so the lack of "save anywhere" isn't game breaking. Also the Switch is a system that goes to sleep and wakes up with ease, so this shouldn't ever be a problem. Grinding There are points in this game where you will be required to run in circles, killing monsters for experience and gold. It's never really extreme, but it does exist. If you've ever played a game with gear and leveling up, you've encountered this before in varying levels of extremity. The battle system is well developed and the enemy variety is good, so grinding never feels like too much of a chore. SUMMARY This game is absolutely fantastic and should be in the top 5 most wanted games of any Nintendo Switch owner. If you are a fan of RPGs and fondly remember games like Final Fantasy 3 (6) or 7, Chrono Trigger and the like, this game is a system seller.

This game is an excellent look back at classic JRPGs with many modern twists and quality of life to it. I spent close to 80 hours playing the game and I could easily go back for more. There is a true final boss I still need to defeat to fully finish the game. There are 8 different protagonists each with their own stories to follow and go through. Each story is comprised of 4 chapters and it's up to the player to decide how to best complete the game.

Gameplay is extremely fun and reminiscent of older games, with a better story than games of the same time period (with the exception of ffvi, which had a great story as well). Graphics in the background are especially gorgeous. All characters have their own specialty and adds for further strategy implementation. The only negative of this game is the enemy encounter rate is extremely high, but not enough to take away from the enjoyment of this game.

Great graphics, and a nice mix of combat systems. Brilliant music makes listening with headphone a must.

The music, artstyle and storytelling are great and reminiscent of the best parts of older JRPGs. The battle & job systems are easy to quickly use while offering plenty of depth if one wants to delve into it. While the stories are more individually focused, rather than spanning a large group narrative, the smaller scale stories work in the games favor to separate it from other games. The only issue i have is that the text fonts in dialogue & menus are small and could’ve been larger/bolder making them easier to read, as well as the mini-map should’ve been larger (since it can be toggled on/off this wouldn’t have been an issue to obscuring the screen at all). Overall, it’s a great fantasy game that tells some neat stories by focusing on the characters.

This is a great JRPG that harkens back to the Super Nintendo days. The 2D-HD style is a delight to look at and the gameplay mechanics add extra complexity to the turn based style. The soundtrack is one of the best of any JRPG. My only qualm would be the story doesn't incorporate all the members of the party much; the stories are very individual.

I can't say enough good things about this game. The old school throwback Style just works amazingly. The soundtrack is wash and vibrant and harkens back to things like the Chrono Trigger soundtrack. The gameplay is smooth and fun. Once you learn the tactics it's great. Also, don't forget about those pomegranates. Can really change the tide of the battle.

A JRPG that is a fantastic nostalgia drop to older titles like FF6. The class system for this game is phenomenal. It also takes a bit of bravely default and twists it a bit for an amazing combat system. The music is amazing. The story is 8 separate stories that loosely interact so be wary of that when you hope in. However due to the structure of the stories they are perfect for the switch's portability and short little spurts of gaming.

When I saw this game being heavily advertised for the Switch, I knew I had to try out the Demo for myself. I tried out the game and I loved it. The stories for each of the characters are well developed; maybe generic, but the concept behind the game is unique. The artwork is also unique since it captures the modern realistic effect of being 3D but also brings back pixilated effects to the market. It has a stunning gameplay.

Square Enix did a great job creating a classic JRPG for the switch. I like the graphic style, the combat system is simple but effective, the path action interactive with npc around the world is interesting, can be somewhat repetitive with random encounter but just what you expect from a traditional jrpg. Overall a good game, hopefully with a strong sale SE gonna continue to support the swith with more original games

This is the game that persuaded me to buy the Switch! I love the 2D, old school, Final Fantasy style and the game mechanics were executed very well. Unfortunately with so many other awesome indie games, I put this one on the back-burner. But I havent forgotten the story/stories unlike other games I stopped playing because this game was done right. I will definitely be finishing it at some point. Worth the money.

I have not played a JRPG in some time, but the art style of Octopath drew me in. After sitting down to play it, after about 20 minutes, the game had its hooks in me. I just finished the Primrose story at right around 35 hours and I cannot wait to continue someone else. Very friendly to anyone new to JRPG's, but still deep and engaging enough to keep the interest of veterans. Highly recommended title.

SPOILER FREE REVIEW If you like heavy story-based RPG's this is the game for you. Couldn't put it down for a few weeks after purchase. Played the demo a lot and was familiar with the opening pieces, but there is so much more to explore in the full copy. This reminds me of the older Final Fantasy games both with the sprites and map, also the game play and story lines.

Octopath Traveler is an old school turn-based RPG focused on the stories of 8 characters. Each character is separate from each other and they don't really interact all that much despite you having a full party, which can be a bit strange. This is an old-school grindy turn-based RPG. The battle system is an improvement over traditional turn-based games. It seems simple on the surface, but as you gain abilities it gets surprisingly deep. You start by picking any of the 8 characters, and naturally you pick up the other 7 early on. There are definitely points where the game expects you to grind, but if you don't mind grinding it's a great RPG.

Octopath Traveler isn't necessarily the best RPG ever made, but it recaptures the creativity of SNES era RPGs and puts it into a modernized package. If you can get past the disjointed story structure, you'll find a fun world to explore with stunning visuals and an excellent battle system. People who dislike RPGs won't like this one, but fans of the genre should absolutely pick this one up.

Currently a few hours into the game and loving every minute of it. This feels like a classic RPG that I used to play on the SNES, with some new and challenging game mechanics. Even though the game is sprite based it shows off what the Unreal 4 engine is capable of through the lighting and particles. If you are ready for nostalgia with a real challenge I highly recommend this game.

Really fun game, I haven't finished it yet but have put about 40 hours into it. You get to unlock all the characters but can only use 4 at a time and you chose based on your playstyle. The soundtrack is absolutely wonderful, the game is gorgeous, especially the snowy areas. Highly recommended if you want something chill and to hold you over till another game comes along.

I recent purchased this game, it is a great RPG game for Switch. This game does not have an overall ultimate plot like most JRPG's, instead it has 8 different plots for 8 different characters, allowing you to play out the stories in which ever order you desire. Thus far, each characters story has been enjoyable and are not heavily cliche'd like other games.
