Never played the original on the PS2. But after spending a short time with it, I came out very impressed. The game itself is solid. The artwork and visuals are absolutely beautiful. The translation seems to be spot on thus far. And the gameplay is surprisingly fun.
Odin Sphere is a mix of platforming with a beat-em-up combat system, and topping it off with a RPG system to enhance the character further. Starting the game for the first time allows you to choose between English vocals or Japanese vocals. I opted to use the Japanese vocals to check with the translation. And it seems correct where I left off.
The story is intriguing, with the first set of characters coming straight out of Norse mythology. I had to force myself to set the controller down in order to properly pace myself. Otherwise, I'd end up losing myself and spending hours on it.
The Storybook Edition came with nice goodies that makes it worth the extra $20 spent. The printed box exterior has the game's world printed on the back. The steel slip-case is very pretty and cool. I have yet to look through the artbook. But as a collector, I probably won't ever look into it for a while or when I end up being curious about it.
If you're unable to secure the Storybook Edition, then that's okay. Like any special edition, it's catered to the fans who want the extras. The game by itself is worth the entry price, especially since this is a HD remaster. I highly recommend picking this up.

Vanillaware are known for making great 2D hack n slash side scrollers. Odin sphere has great gameplay at the lost of repetition when you start going through all the characters. The art direction is hand drawn fantasy setting, a lot of colors and beautiful artwork.
Gameplay is fluid and all the special moves you obtain syngerize very well with each other to create unique combos based on the player.
Story is interesting and shows depth to each nation/characters motives, desires, goals, and cones full circle, I enjoyed the journey, only downside was you run through the same areas, just more difficult per character, which can be a turn off. Other than reused stages/enemies the game has plenty of replayability and has high degrees of polish, i'd recommend this to anyone interested in 2d side scrollers.
*Played through all books, i'm at 50 hours still enjoying the game!
Positives
+Artwork and characters
+High polished gameplay
+Excellent difficulty scaling
+Inuitive combo system/skills
Negatives
-Reused stages (about 7 or 8)
-Reused boss/mid bosses and enemies
-wanted more exploration stages

this game was a fantastically gorgeous game back when it was originally released. But now in HD it's a true spectacle. I had to get the collectors edition because the artwork was just so good. however the original did suffer from some things that felt like a chore such as planting seed and cooking, generally a lot of backtracking and grinding which made the game start to feel old half-way through. But now they added a more combo heavy style combat system that feels much less clunky than the original and unique special moves and an ability tree which you can gain new skills. this makes the game much less of a slog to go through however because of how long the game is (I estimate 50+ hours) it still carries the same issue as the previous game but much much less so.

A perfect remaster to one of the PS2 best games!

Odin Sphere was released late in the PS2's life cycle and yet was considered a cult classic. It told a great story from several perspectives, has beautifully hand drawn visuals, and great side scrolling gameplay. So how does the remaster fare?
As great as this was on the PS2 it had 2 major flaws: There were massive and frequent framerate drops and the game was considered difficult at times. Both of these problems were fixed in the remaster. It runs at 1080p/60fps, adds new bosses, better AI, and and enhanced battle system. But what if you don't like these changes for some reason?
Fear not! As an added bonus this remaster features a Classic Mode! It plays EXACTLY like the original but at 1080p/60fps! Now you can play this game like it was 10 years ago or with the improvements if you like!
IMO this is a prime example of how a remaster should be done! If you like side scrollers or games that tell a great story go pick this up now! You won't regret it!

Beautiful graphics, awesome music, amazing game play and a wonderful story. This is a must own game. Combat is fast and fluid with many different characters to play through. Voice acting is great on both sides.

My first campaign through this game, I marveled at the beautiful painting-like visuals, the great music and fluid combat. I really like the fixes they've made and how smooth it runs on the new engine.
By the second campaign, the repetitiveness had hit me quite a bit. I'm now taking a long break before campaigns 3-5. Sometimes a quality experience can be too long.

Fun game, good for people who like quick action/combo heavy fighting games. The storybook-like art is really great, it looks amazing. Lots of systems in the game add depth and variety.
The Storybook Edition had some great content, the book is cool and the T-Shirt was nice as well.

This game to me has aged very well, on my new tv the colors pop, the animations are amazing, I have this also for the ps2, over ten years ago, and still passes the test of time. The collectibles it comes with are also pretty cool. Great action RPG, for fans of the genre

I know the vita is cheaper, but I believe this game performed better on the PS4.It was easier to see what was happening when it wasn't cramped.I think the performance was slightly better as well, but I'm not expert. Regardless great experience for any gamer.

I blind bought this game (and Atelier Sophie.) , the graphics and the 2d style gameplay attracted me. Though a bit repetitive it was a great decision to buy. Great game and story. Would buy again in a heart beat.

Odin Sphere was a little known game that was very good but received little attention as it came out near the end of the PS2 era. Now Leifthrasir the remastered version of the classic is out and better than ever, with all the wonderful goodies included in the Storybook edition puts this over the top and a must buy for any JRPG fan.
