The sound processing wasn't what it should be. However, the unit went dead after 3 weeks. BestBuy didn't want to exchange it, but they made an exception. I won't be buying from them in the future. This is why the store is always almost empty each time I visit it.

So I read reviews on the newest Onkyo's having HDMI failures. I have an old Onkyo receiver from 8 years ago and it still is working great. None the less I tried two other receivers in the same mid-level range as the Onkyo 646 and returned them both.
I initially purchased the Yamaha RXV779. I spent only a few days with it, but I could not get the music to sound good from it no matter what parameter, I changed. I had become accustomed to to the Onkyo sound I guess. The Yamaha sounded bright and the speakers were very localized, which I did not appreciate. Movies sound fine. No Atmos surround field.
The Yamaha had a few things going for it that seem to be lacking in the Onkyo. I appreciated the app. for your cellphone and/or I-pad. Very cool and adds a lot of tuning options and cool graphics. The Yamaha also has multiple sound fields that can really change the sound. The Yamaha has a second zone.
The next purchase/return was Denon's AVR-S910W. This receiver is an Atmos receiver, but it does not have a second zone. It seemed to me that Denon takes real pride in their product and it has small details from the packaging, microphone stand to cable labels, etc.. It also still utilizes audyssey sound set-up, which provided a "reference" setting that is apparently setting up the sound according to the movie producers intentions.
Here in lies the issues with the Denon. Movies sounded good or even great, but once again the Denon played too bright, but not as bright or high noted as the Yamaha.
It also made, at least my speakers, which are Monoprice in-ceiling 8" speakers and a HSU sub-woofer, too localized. If you change any parameters/settings on the Denon you lose the "reference" setting and all the sound options related to it. The Audyssey would not recognize my back rear surround speakers and/or the sub-woofer. I tried a smaller sub. which it did not recognize at all, where as the HSU, which I highly recommend by the way, created too much ambient noise to be recognized. The Denon app. is comparable to the Onkyo, good but not great, the Yamaha app. is much better.
When I purchased and set up the Onkyo, not only did the set-up recognize all my speakers, but it sounded great. It is more full bodied and has a larger sound field than the other two. Ah, the Onkyo sound is the way to go for me. Now, if it can be as reliable as my first Onkyo, I will be very happy. I hope this helps with your decision making.

I love love music and was looking for receiver that made me feel like I'm sitting in a club listening to music live. I sat In three magnolia theaters at Best Buy and listened to all kinds of high end receivers - pioneer elite, denon and marantz. Marantz gold was my first really nice receiver which I loved. After hearing all the different receivers on variety of speakers I was not wow'd . I Left confused. Is everything all about theater and movies now. So I did some research online. Finding a musician and music lover blogs, taking in everything I could find, learning about ohms, true watt specs, DAC. Found review on this onkyo. I had a budget but wanted best I could get within that budget. Me and my husband are sitting here right now listening to all or favorite music. And we are in awe! I have chills listening to Clapton, queen, seal, Adele. This is my second onkyo. We bought a Yamaha receiver last year and I hated the boxy muffled sound so I'm sticking with onkyo!

This has been automatically shutting down on me. I didnt expect this after only a few years and through research this is a common issue with this product.
Great products last forever my last one only had to be replaced because of the new technology.

I've owned this receiver for 6 months now. I've put it through its paces to get a full scope of its positives & negatives because I never believe a review shortly after getting something is a full experience -- the shiny new toy always seems more impressive than it is. That being said:
Positives:
Excellent integration of all components
Easy to set-up & use
Great sound & picture output
Strong WiFi receiver means even weak signal is picked up
Remote handles loads of other components, including DVR
Negatives
Nav menu can be slow loading & cumbersome at times
Pandora on-screen menu is just poorly designed
No multi-user settings
EQ wasn't the easiest thing to personalize & lock
The negatives are mostly nick-nack things, but I've used systems that have smoother, easier-to-use interfaces could easily be integrated in a newer design. Previous Onkyo receiver had this issue, so I was expecting it to be addressed on this updated model, but it wasn't
But it does sound tremendous. Actually, I nuked a sub-woofer because of the power it delivered during a sci-fi battle sequence.
Go for it.

I bought a Toshiba Receiver at American TV, back in 1981, and still going strong. My Toshiba blows this Onkyo away, Returned it.. I wish they would make a receiver that has old school power, with the new technologies .

I purchased this receiver from Best Buy back in July '15 and after 6 months use, I can honestly say that it has performed extremely well. I have a cable DVR and three different game consoles hooked up to it and the TX-NR646 produces clear, excellent sound from all attached devices to my 7.2 surround setup. Music played via Airplay sounds incredible. I read about sound delays both from switching devices and screen to screen transitions but I have not encountered any of these. I have downloaded/installed two firmware updates since purchasing this receiver and all is working very well. The primary reason for purchasing this unit is for the DTS:X capability which is not enabled at this time. I am (im)patiently awaiting the firmware release to enable this feature

My old JVC sound stopped working so I decided to get some serious artillery. This steroid injected turbocharged receiver rumbles my walls and is easy to work with my Nergy and Martin Logan setup. It is worth it!

For a mid level theater receiver this one is the one!!! Absolutely love it!!! We have it connected to 5 Klipsch Surround speakers and a 12 inch monster 600w Klipsch sub. Taking the sub back for the 10 inch model because the 12 shakes the house to the point of distraction even at low levels. Love my Onkyo and the smartphone app that controls everything is beyond cool!!

I have had Onkyo receivers for a long time. Each always better than the last. I wanted to upgrade my system to include 4K support which the Onkyo TXNR646 was the best technology for a reasonable price. Setup was a breeze, and the unit really is top notch. I was concerned at first being that my old onkyo I paid almost $1300 for and now this one $600... the technology truely has changed. I recommend this unit to anyone looking for a good quality unit without breaking the bank.

After owning one Onkyo receiver and upgrading my home theater system to a 4K 65 tv. I felt I need to upgrade my receiver so 4k will pass through from my samsung 4K player.
The first couple of months I was having issues with audio for music any time I'd play the wireless music it would shut off at random times. It was pretty annoying. I emailed Onkyo and called them about it and it never got resolved. I think after two software up dates it finally stopped shutting off the music.
So now watching movies with this surround sound system is great. My upstairs neighbor once told me I shook his apt. I was watching Sin City on one of the scenes I had to stop the movie I thought someone crashed into my apt. With this receiver some movies make you feel like your in the movie. I can't wait to upgrade my speakers so I can get a better feel for the Atmos but with the speaker I currently have it sounds great I have the speakers from my last Onkyo receiver.

We couldn't pass up offer to buy floor model with everything but a box for $300. This replaced our older family room Onkyo since we bought a 4K TV, upgraded to DirecTV 4K and old receiver did not support 4K. Setup was easy like all Onkyo receivers and mic did a great job calibrating each speaker automatically. The Atmos sound is excellent and can't wait to hear something with DTS:X on it. Had to do firmware upgrade to get the DTS:X sound format. We ran out of HDMI cables so used an old one that was 1.2 and it screwed up 3D. We replaced it with a 4K 3D HDMI 2.0 cable and 3D looks amazing now. You can rename HDMI name that is displayed so we have DirecTV, Xbox360, and 4K Bluray / 3D. We purchased the Samsung 4K bluray and works great with this receiver and our new tv. Highly recommend this receiver. We like it so much that we purchased another open box receiver to put in our theater room. Go to pick it up tomorrow.

i bought this receiver for thanksgiving 2015, took it home, set it up and it worked great for a while. I started looking at a movie, and, the video signal was lost to the TV together with the audio. after a couple seconds it came back on, and off again. so i taught it probably was the hdmi cable, but after check the cables it happened again, then i read the reviews at B.B and realized that other users had the same problem. I hope this is just a future firmware fix, because the receiver updated itself in Dec 2015. The sound and features are amazing though. just hope Onkyo will post a fix soon.

I purchased the unit to replace a Marantz powering my 7.1 home theater. I also use the Zone 2 analog output jacks (issues with both powered & unpowered) to send a signal to a 2nd receiver which powers two other sets of speakers in my basement. The Marantz "played" well with the other receiver and zones 1 and 2 were sound sync. With this receiver, you can only sync the sound if you choose direct mode for the main room. This is a huge disappointment as direct mode sounds completely flat (highs and sub) Guess I should mention that the 2nd receiver is also an Onkyo so that makes it even more frustrating. I even tried sending separate digital connections to both receivers. Still no luck. This receiver's Zone 1 always lags behind unless in direct. But if you are looking to only play one zone, this receiver does sound great! It just won't work for me. It's going back. I'm on hold now for Onkyo customer support. 52 minutes and counting!!! Goodbye Onkyo!!
