Saves money for other family members

This device saves me money - I pay just over $4 per month taxes & fees, compared with a huge long distince bill I used to get, plus I chose a phone number that is local to my mom and other family members so they can call me with no long distance charges. I live in a very rural area where I do not get cell phone reception, and the ooma allows me to make unlimited long distance calls at no charge. My phone box took a lightning hit last week, and fried everything that was hooked up to it (desktop pc, TV, DSL moden, and yes, the ooma Telo). The phone company fixed the damaged phone and dsl lines and replace my modem. I called Ooma customer service regarding no connection after the phone was restored.. They were courteous in helping me trouble-shoot my problem, which turned out to be a ruined Internet(in) phone jack and they replaced my telo free of charge.

The sound quality is not crystal clear, but the sound is still very good. I can't compare to a regular land line as I haven't had one for 15 years. I got this so I would save my cell minutes as I'm on the phone a lot now that my job is working from home quite often. I was interested in adding a splitter to the ooma box so I could have 3 lines going out - one to the phone, the second to a wall phone outlet, and the third to my DirecTv box. What I found is that there's not enough room for the 3 outlet switch. You can put a 2 outlet switch on the ooma box, but not 3. Here's my setup. Modem > Router > Switch > Ooma Box > telephone/DirecTv box (Ooma only has 1 telephone out jacks, so need the dual jack accessory bought from hardware store). There are other configurations that can be done, for example: Modem > Ooma Box > Router & telephone One thing that I found puzzling is that there's really no information that I've found that shows how or when you pay the monthly taxes. I had to provide my credit card information at the time of activation of the Ooma, so maybe in the fine print that is mentioned, but looking at the FAQ's on Ooma's website I couldn't find anything. Kind of interesting that they wouldn't have that mentioned anywhere. I think my monthly charge is around $3.10 for the FCC fees/taxes, but that depends on where you live (or maybe your service address, not sure).

    Fabulous device and service

After battling with AT&T for 3 weeks to get reliable phone service I decided I needed a change. I did not want a contract, so I skipped Vonage. Plus, I had a less than stellar experience with their service a while back. I hooked up my Ooma Telo and used it for a week before porting my old number over. Then, my number was ported in about a week and a half. I love this device. It really works very well. It looks nice. I have been very happy with call quality. I love being able to blacklist numbers so I am not bothered by calls from those numbers. I love the service that minimizes marketing calls. Also, I have not had a call drop yet. Sound quality is very good. The voicemail service works well. Plus, it is so much cheaper than my old phone line and long distance service. I have already paid for the Telo device with savings in less than 4 months.

    Excellent Product

I bought the OOMA over a month ago and just got my old phone ported. I have the device on the router and not in front of the router. This set up for me is preferred since if the OOMA goes out, the entire home network goes out. I have found no delays or problems using it this way. The calls are clear and I have had just one network issue where the call had a slight delay-echo. This went away after a few seconds. I also opted-in to the OOMA Premiere for a year which is an additional $120 (more or less) per year. That is the total cost to run the OOMA. I figured out that in 8 months I will have paid for the OOMA and then start saving about $40 a month on phone service. I also went to cable network since DSL here is just plain lousy. It did feel good to get rid of our substandard phone company who really could care less about any issues you have. Not that cable is some queen of the highway. Setup is easy and there were no real issues. There are a lot of tweaks you can do with Voicemail including linking it to Google Voice or just having the message sent to you via email. Or just letting your OOMA get it. You can also put your own answering machine on, but that makes calls NOT go to your voice mail.. at least that is what happened to me. Check out the forums at OOMA and see what is going on. The customer service is MUCH better, too.

    Works like a charm

Should have done this years ago. Ported my old phone no. over with no problems, only took about a week. Had AT&T land line with DSL, kept that until my old phone no. ported, then went with a stand alone cable modem and dropped AT&T (with pleasure). If you disconnect your outside "customer access" phone/DSL lines coming into your house (easy), then you can plug the output from the Ooma to one of your phone jacks in your house, and then all the phone jacks in your house are connected to the Ooma. Sound quality is the same as my land line was, and if someone leaves you a message on the Ooma device, the power LED on your remote wireless phone cradle will blink indicating there is a message on the Ooma (pretty cool).

The Ooma Telo box was easy to install. The voice quality is excellent. The basic free features are adequate. So you don't need to pay for the upgraded features. The upgraded features are great but you have to pay for them. Two of my relatives have said that they have tried to call and they got busy signals or the call went to voice mail. I am not sure why this has happened because there is call waiting included in the basic features.

Nice for occassional home phone use

I rarely use my home phone but I do use it occasionally when I work from home. Also, I use my home number for doctors, dentists, auto mechanics, service providers, etc so that they don't have my personal cell phone. I bought MagicJack when it first came out but when I started working from home more, I needed better quality and better consistency so I switched to Vonage for 3 years or so. I don't like paying monthly for home phone service so I recently switched to Ooma. I have been satisfied so far. It did drop a couple of calls early on but for the most part, it has been clear, reliable and consistent. Based on the price I paid and discounts I had, I should breakeven and get returns in about 4 months. I am pleased.

The ooma telo was very easy to install. Went online activated the product code on ooma.com , then plugged ooma into wireless router and phone into ooma had it going in 5 min. We have it hooked up to four phones(one base three jacks), no need to leave computer on was a plus. Also love the no long distance charges in the U.S. and that it will pay for itself within a few months. Very happy with phone quality as good as land line. It was great to cancel our land line phone company. Would highly recommend this product!

    Good alternative to landline phone

The Ooma telo has been a true asset for me. Since I didn't foresee canceling home phone service I wanted to find a way to lower my bill. Initially I had minor issues setting up the device but the tech support people at Ooma were quite helpful with resolving my problem. The Ooma telo is easy to use and the instructions are very helpful. I have not heard any drop off on the call quality and people are able to hear me very clearly. There may be a slight time delay when someone talks to you on the phone but it's hard to notice sometimes. It's good Ooma offers the option of porting existing residential numbers to their system. Initial costs were the only significant costs I saw but I have trimmed at least $35 from my monthly home phone service.

I was sick and tired of paying a monthly phone bill and I was told about Ooma from an acquaintance of mine. I was apprehensive at first and was worried about call quality and the "too good to be true" factor. I ended up taking the plunge about 6 months ago and I love it! The unit itself is a little costly, however it pays for itself in about 4-6 months depending on how much your old phone bill was. The call quality is fantastic and as long as you have a good enough internet connection (I recommend cable) there should be no problems. Voicemails can be automatically forwarded to your email and can also be listened to on the website. Overall it's a great purchase and I would recommend it anybody.

    I love my Ooma!

I love my Ooma. We've had it for over 6 months now and have never dropped a call or not been able to make a phone call when we needed to. The sound quality is the same as with a regular landline so far as we can tell. The only unexpected thing was that it cost us a bit more to set up than we were expecting due to the fact that we had to pay the phone company to "uncouple" the phone and internet lines into our house. Some people will not have to have this done but it's a good idea to check with the phone/internet company before you start out just so you know how much it's really going to cost. Also don't forget that if you want your same number, Ooma will charge you about $50 but that's totally worth it to keep your current phone number. Ooma customer service is pretty good and you never really have to go through a huge IVR when you call them so that's refreshing. Overall this is product is working exactly as we expected it to and is now saving us $40 per month on our phone bill. Nice!

I bought this Ooma unit about 2 months ago thinking "OK, this will be like magic jack with below average call quality, where you sound like a robot except you do not have to plug into a computer". I figured what the heck I would give it a try and if I did not like it I would return the unit. Well, the unit is still with me and is not going anywhere. I am totally loving my Ooma. The call quality is just as good as having a dedicated land line. I have had absolutely no problems with my service & really like the website where you can customize features, etc... It was a little tricky setting up at first, but it only took me less than 15 minutes to get it set up & be able to make calls.

Seems too good to be True, but it is

I actually have the 1st generation ooma hub and scout, but ooma upgraded it's products so I have to review on this product. I have had ooma serivce for 6 months now and have already paid off my initial investment. The device I have requires something called a scout device for every phone you and hooked up to it and is not compatible with the new telo handsets. The biggest disadvantage for having this system was that I had to rewire my phone network because it was messed up to begin with, but I believe my experience was outside that of what normal people have to deal with. Here is my review on the product: The setup takes a little know-how but once figured out, it's a very simple concept. The device itself should be wired in directly after the modem and before any routers. This is important because the device allocates bandwidth when on a call. Because of this, call quality is what you make it. Out of factory, it allocates 130 Kbps by default for a call, this can be changed to as low as 40 Kbps or as high as 215 Kpbs. What this comes down to is computer internet speed vs call quality. Right now, the factory default gives excellent voice quality. If you feel you need better quality, simply log on to the hub setup via a network browser and change your settings. This is great for VoIP phone service. The reason customer support is lacking is because ooma does not have field support. This is why the service is so cheap. They limit their workforce to minimize cost. This is why you need a little know-how to get the system working to your specs. They can not send anyone to help you and thus they have to rely on communication to fix any problems you may have. With all that being said, one can see why so many people complain about the customer service with ooma. I personally find them slightly difficult since they have to be very through in what they do to insure you get the service you need. I recently have to replace my unit because it went bad (I think a surge ruined the transformer and eventually frying the hub). One week later I have a new hub and phone is back up. Slightly frustrating going a week without home phone, but don't have premier which would forward calls to a cell in such a situation so can't complain. Overall, this is the best deal for phone service out there. Compared to vontage, probably no difference except ooma doesn't have monthly fees and even for the premier service, only 10 bucks a month can't be beat. No hassling with voicemail because the base plays them directly with a push of a button. No dialing from a handset necessary. Talk for hours and never receive a bill again. Additional features available for those looking for the best experience.

Great...All the bells and whistles for ~$10 /month

This device is awesome. Bought Nov. 2009 and received the Premier for 3 months free. Once you have it, you'll not want to get rid of it. For ~$10 per month you get a ton of features and since the time I purchase it, they are coming out with new add ons. They now have a bluetooth adapter to connect your cell phone so that it rings throughout your home. I'm looking forward to getting that. All in all, the online features are awesome and we love the call forwarding and voicemail alerts to email or text message. I do not have the telo handset so I cannot comment on that. Call clarity is excellent. Only bad thing that I noticed is the power cord is loose and seems to come out pretty easy on the base. To remedy the problem, I've just used a twist tie and tied the power, phone distribution, and ethernet cord together - no problems since. Going on nearly a year and I'm well past my break even point if I would have kept my home phone service through a traditional carrier. We have an 8 mb high speed internet plan and that seems to be working great with the Ooma.

This is a superior product. It is truely a cost saving deal. We have cable service and were wondering how long we were going to suffer their price hikes. We now pay $34.90 a year for phone instead or $50+ a month and were able to port our phone number. We had a few problems with the quality of our calls at first, however we have worked out the bugs. It is easy to use, easy to set up and operate. Had the service up and running in about 1 hour! Don't let the initial cost deter you! You only pay for the 911 taxes in your area monthly or annually after you purchase and install! IT IS FOR REAL!!!!!!

Fantastic Phone and Big Money Saver!

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

In a word, ooma is fantastic. I haven't had a home phone since the 1990's, but for a one time fee, I decided to get back in the game. The call quality is fantastic, but I do have a fast (FIOS) connection into the house. The setup is fairly straight forward, and the available features are impressive - especially if you sign up for ooma Premier (multiple lines, multi ring, call fwd'ing, etc). But make no mistake, the best part of ooma us absolutely the price; one time and I am done with phone bills as long as ooma is in business. For me, the break even is about 5 months. I am also a big Skype user and would have went that route, but Skype does not yet support number porting. With ooma, I was able to port a 15 year old number. I've also paired this with a VTech DS6321-3, which allows me to use bluetooth with my home phone. This primarily does 2 things: 1) It allows me to use any of my bluetooth headsets with my landline number, a nice feature when taking work related conference calls from home, 2) enables my cell phones to pair with the home phone. This allows me to "dock" my iPhone to its charger, and when it rings, it rings every VTech phone in the house. I can see who is calling on any of the VTech handsets, and can easily answer the call. It clearly indicates it is an inbound cell call (and from which paired phone - max 2 can be paired), but do note that using the phone in this fashion (scenario #2) still uses cell phone minutes.

The installation was simple. The VOIP quality is excellent as good as good as a standard line. No static, no lag even when other computers are online such as game playing. My calls to land lines or cellular phones have all been excellent. The inexpensive premium service is a very nice add on feature. I contacted support to test them out and I had a very good experience with them. Its a great way to save money without having to sacrifice quality. The unit is well designed and attractive.

WOW I'm Impressed! I purchased this Ooma to Replace my "Home" line from my are U kidding me on the price VERSE. Originaly, I was thinking of buying the Updated Version of Not Quite MagicJack because I had used the original version before. But, as I was looking at the various options, I remembered seeing the TV Commercial for Ooma and, saw on BB's website that It got good reviews *A big THANK YOU to the others that reviewed this Item.* Ooma was super easy to Set Up and Activate all you need is a web browser - No software to install - takes less than 15mins - After that no computer is required! SOUND QUALITY is as good or better than U-verse. The Line Connect and Disconnect when making a call is much faster. And, after the initial device cost MUCH cheaper! Oh and FYI - I generally do NOT leave reviews but, I liked this product so much, I felt is was the right thing to do - I was that satisfied!

An outstanding product! No more phone bills people. This is the real deal! We've had this system for almost a year and its paid for itself already. We're saving $35 a month on phone bills ($420 a year!). You get all the options; like caller id, call waiting, etc. Plus much more( some services you have to pay for, but are not required). I just hope Ooma can keep this up. The only issue we've had was porting our current phone number over to Ooma(which you must pay for). At the time, customer service was just plain bad, but since then it has definitely improved. Ooma is one of the truly great products that rarely come around. Highly recommended! Update: with the exception of he equipment and porting, Ooma was totally free. Now you have to pay monthly taxes of a few dollars a month. Still a great deal!

I've been checking out Ooma for the past couple of years. Recently I switched to a cable modem and increased my internet speed as that seemed to be a problem some have had in getting clear calls. Calls are great with Ooma. I have been using Ooma for about a month now with no problems. I added the extra phone line because I also run a small business out of my home. I primarily use my Uniden 3 phone system for the majority of my calls but i also have one Ooma handset in order to take advantage of the second line. The initial startup costs were substantial (almost $400 for the hub, extra phone and 1 years worth of premium service) but i would have paid that in a little over six months anyway. By January 1 my costs should be about even had i stayed with Verizon (so thankful to be done with them). Beginning in 2011 all calls will be free with the exception of local taxes.
