Customers consistently note the outstanding picture quality and the various HDR options available on the 4K Ultra HD Streaming Blu-ray Player. The upscaling feature is also praised for improving the quality of older Blu-ray discs, and the backlit remote is appreciated for its convenience. However, some customers mention the price as a drawback and the lack of SACD support.

THE 4K Player for Physical Media Lovers

If you believe physical media is dead, spend an hour or two with your favorite film in UHD on this and I guarantee you’ll change your mind.
Not only does the picture quality on 4k discs with this player blow any streaming platform out of the water, but its ability to uplevel the quality of older Blu-rays and even DVDs is surprisingly incredible. I found myself more than once checking true output of older 1080p discs because, to my eyes, I couldn’t believe it wasn’t native 4k.
Sound quality is off the charts too. The fullness and detail you can achieve (depending on your sound system) is leaps and bounds better than any previous player I’ve owned, and certainly better than compressed streaming sound.
I’ll admit the menu system is a bit complicated, but that comes with the territory of purchasing a top of the line “it can do anything” player, and it’s pretty easy to navigate with the help of more video and audio-technically focused people on YouTube who can just walk you through it.
It’s all worth it, though. I’ve never enjoyed my media this much before, and even my streaming-only friends admit the experience is better. It’s an expensive piece of equipment to be sure, but if you love entertainment and still believe in the quality that comes with physical media, this is the player you need to wring the most potential out of your setup.
Thank you for your positive feedback! It's wonderful to hear you are enjoying the product! -C

This is a well built player with the best picture quality I’ve seen for BD and 4K disks. It really excels at HDR and Dolby vision, I don’t think there is another player that can produce as good a picture. I’ve had zero issues with it perfectly playing every disc I throw at it and has never locked up or glitched like all my other bran players have occasionally. My OLED Sony is just amazing with this player, and the improvement on even my 2015 85” Samsung was surprising, specially on HDR movies. With the older Samsung I disabled HDR on my Apple TV as it was always too dark and made the picture much worse then with it off, but with this player HDR looks amazing. The settings allow the scale to be set by tV type and it makes all the difference. I do wish it was an all format player, but I’ll keep my Sony ES 4K player for the un-supported formats, the quality upgrade is worth buying this Panasonic.

Outstanding Blu-Ray Player

This replaced an older Oppo Blu-Ray player. The Panasonic will load the video disc more quickly and gives an excellent video and audio output. It enhances a regular Blu-Ray or DVD. I do regret it will not read SACD's, but in truth i did not have that many. When used as a CD player the sound is full and rich. I have not played with customizing the settings yet and suspect i can improve it a bit, although the factory settings work so well I coukd be wrong. The player is very well built and silent in operation. Very pleased with its performance so far.

This thing is built like a tank, has SO many options that you won't find on other 4K players that were seemingly meant to spin the disc and output video, nothing else. Pricey? Yes. But a fine example of "you get what you pay for" IMO.
If you have a large library of 4K discs or are in the process of growing one and want the best, this is an amazing option. Setup was simple and there's definitely a noticeable difference between this and the $300 LG player I was previously using.
THANK YOU Panasonic for including a backlit remote, all you other companies selling higher end audio/video stuff PLEASE take notice :)
Thank you for your 5-star rating! We are happy to hear you are pleased with the product. -M

Got lucky and bought one open-box at the price of a new ub820. Couldn’t be happier with the outstanding 4K performance and deal I got. This tank also performs admirably with standard blu-rays and most upconverted DVDs even look better than ever. Comes with a nice backlit remote. The customizable settings can be as complicated & detailed as you want. I also love the 1x fast forward speed that still plays the sound audibly for quicker repeats. Thank you Panasonic for producing this quality UHD. Please continue to make these and please also bring back your TVs to the US market.

Watched this unit for over a year. Darn thing never went on sale anywhere. Even at this price, it sold out a couple of times, though. As it should have. This is the best 4K player available today.
CON: LG should stop sitting on its laurels. No excuse why LG has not put out a newer model with 7.1.2 (Dolby Atmos) capability. That’s it for the Cons.
PRO: REMOTE. Full size. Rectangular. For the cost of this unit, one would reasonably expect the buttons to be backlit. They are not. The remote has several buttons – Subtitle, Audio, Video Settings, HDR Settings, Sound Effects and High Clarity – not found on LG’s “Magic Remote.” These buttons give you direct access to various menus.
FEATURES. Literally, too many to list but includes De Blur, De-judder, Clear, Smooth, Real Cinema, OLED Motion Pro, etc., as well as the usual suspect. There are recommended values for each setting on the Internet.
A suggestion. The included “Basic Owner’s Manual” - a tiny 13-half-page pamphlet really - is useful as a fire starter in your fireplace. The actual - read useful - owner’s manual is available here – https://www.panasonic.com/content/dam/pim/au/en/DP/DP-UB9/DP-UB9000GN/DP-UB9000-User-Manual-Australia.pdf.
Yeah, Australia??? Right. But, it appears to be for the American market.
VIDEO: Own two LG 820s. Picture quality on a 77" LG OLED CX was marginally improved over the 820, noticeably in the Black and Contrast. Test disc and scene is always Atomic Blond 4K at the apartment fight sequence, which has motion, contrast and is dark. Good test sequence.
SOUND: Sound is output using the unit’s analog plugs to 2 pre-amps and 6 amps with 4 powered subs (18", two 10" and one 8"). Unit handled it all very well and produced concert-quality sound.
THX: THX certified. However, such certification has more to do with the design and materials used in the construction of whatever than with picture or sound quality. The final output must meet THX specifications. It is the mandatory build quality that makes THX certification desirable for the consumer.

This bd player is a game changer. They say it’s the best thing available now that the OPPO is no longer in production. I upgraded from Lg UBK90 (which was good) and this Panasonic brings separation of sound to a new level. Things are audible that were not before in “It” such as just before the clown Pennywise tears the little boys arm off you hear an ascending panther growl not audible before. The haunting music in opening comes from all speakers but starts more quiet and goes more loud. You can hear the lamb in the butcher shop walking on the crunching hay barely audible.
Also, it’s built like a tank and weighs as much as some avr’s

Absolutely love it! I bought the 420 less than a year ago, and haven’t had any issues. However I decided to upgrade to this because of the build quality. This is how I remember my audio/ video equipment being... nice and solid construction and not light cheap plastic. This is built like a tank and top of the line in every way. I have the Samsung Q90R, so I won’t be benefiting from the Dolby Vision, but I’m planning on getting a OLED for my next TV so now I’m set. This is quite, and the picture quality from this is amazing. Very happy with this purchase.

The Panasonic 4K US9000 Short Throw is an amazing projector. One of the best things about the short throw is there is no walk-thru shadows along with it's spectacular 4K clearness. If you want to see and hear great movies, this short throw is the ONE.

I hate leaving bad reviews, but this thing leaves me no choice. I was between this and the UB820 for my dedicated theater, and ended up taking the plunge for this due to build quality and HDR optimizer that is optimized for use with a projector. Unfortunately, I bought this player a little bit before my theater was complete, then opened it and started using it, only to realize what a piece of crap it is. It freezes constantly, it will power off while I'm watching something fairly often, which is very frustrating and embarrassing when I have a packed out theater, and the newest one, it CRACKED one of my blu-ray discs. One that is no longer in print and hard to come by (BB King Concert). I'd return this in second if I was still able to. Not sure what my recourse is at this point, I wish I opened it up and used it right away upon receiving it. Could have saved me from wasting $1,000. This player could have been great. Feature wise it's great, picture and build quality is top notch, it just doesn't work, I've found it to be the most unreliable disc player I have ever owned.

Here’s the thing guys, when you spend $1200 on a physical media player it has to work flawlessly. Period. The Panasonic (DP-UB9000 BLU-RAY DISC PLAYER) however built like a tank does not perform like one! And the company knows it, they’re just hoping you will overlook the major playback issues like: constant freezing and reading problems with many UHDs. C’mon Panasonic ppl trusted the dependability of the likes of Technics 1200s turntables OGs like me relied on for years. Get it right or take these off the shelves.
Hi Rick! Thank you for bringing this to our attention! Your feedback helps us do better. We are truly sorry to hear about the situation you experienced. If the player freezes please unplug all cables and USB devices from the player, then disconnect it from the power source for about 30 seconds and reconnect it. Please also reset the settings to the factory settings. Turn off the unit and press and hold OK button, the yellow and blue button on the remote at the same time for more than 5 seconds. “00 RET” is displayed on the unit’s display. Then press the arrow right button repeatedly on the remote control until “08 FIN” is displayed on the unit’s display. Following that press and hold the OK button on the remote control for more than 5 seconds. Please also make sure that the player is running on the latest firmware available for this model. If the issue persists, we recommend seeking professional assistance from one of our authorized service centers. – S

Zero regrets. If you're a movie buff, "this is the way." No buffering, no motion blur, no frustrations. Way better than even the best streaming services. Super high quality and a favorite for those "special" series and movies... to the point that loading a disc is a popcorn worthy "experience."

This machine is about like most blu-ray players. It's a toss of the dice as to how glitchy it will be and whether it will be compatible with your receiver, sound processor or other components (more on that below if you want to read that much).
I've had more expensive ones and less expensive, and every one has played with glitches, frozen up and sometimes even needed to be turned off or unplugged before it would even turn loose the disc. I didn't keep this one long enough to comment much on its disc playing, but it did take a lot of attempts before it finally connected by wifi.
I have made long runs with LAN cords before but didn't want to do that this time.
It's plenty heavy, built like a tank, presumably with the audio, video, and power supply all partitioned off from each other.
It should last a long time, but you don't love it you may wish it wouldn't.
One thing audio appreciators and music lovers will notice is that Panasonic missed (or ignored) a golden opportunity by not making it compatible with DVD-Audio & SACD formats.
Sure, most music is probably streamed these days - and that's fine - and we can really love listening to CD's in this player, just like with the Oppo (which I have my optical digital lines out from my 300 disc CD machines going into). Forgive my messy grammar.
Those of us who are spending big bucks on this unit because we appreciate the care that they take with the audio circuitry, DAC's & dedicated XLR stereo lines out, etc. will be a large part of their target consumers though... so they should have known that the lack of support for those formats would be sorely missed.
One very good positive attribute of the Panasonic is their including a full array of analog lines out for either powered speakers, multiple amplifiers, or a multi channel amp with analog inputs.
However, I already have my Oppo for that so I didn't buy it for that aspect of it, just for the highly praised "hollywood cinema processor) or whatever, and the excellent build, and the possibility of using the analog outs a later time in an other configuration.
Regarding compatibility - or lack thereof - with other components, my mismatch was with an Oppo bdp 105, which has inputs actually, so that you can use the superb audio circuitry not only for the discs you load in it, but for other devices from which you send it a digital format.
I had been using the audio hdmi out of a Sony (which cost much less, than this one, and DOES play both of the high end disc formats mentioned above) running into the Oppo and it was a good pairing,
My thinking is that I won't have to put as many miles on the Oppo when I use another player as the work-horse... which is good, because if the Oppo ever conks out I'd have to pay much more for a used one than I paid for it in the first place.
In any case, to make a long story even longer, it did send some sound to the Oppo but not anything for the surround speakers/amp. I tried switching the output from PCM to bitstream and several other audio adjustments to no avail.
I put the sony back in the loop and something amazing happened: the surround channels came back.
For $1k I expect this blu ray player to play well with all types of audio processors, DAC's, and receivers with HDMI inputs.
It should be compatible with such items dating back some years, as long as the surround can be downmixed from the latest formats to a simpler surround sound that will still be great.
I would expect glitches and all... that happens with all players that I've had.
I would DEFINITELY expect it to have surround adjustments, such as bass management, crossovers, large/small speaker selections, white noise generator, test tones, etc. that you need for setting up the speakers/amps/etc. which completely defeats the purpose of having all of those analog outputs putting out what should be some very high quality sound.
It's as if they came to a baseball game with a soccer team. It was hit and miss. Some great and a lot not so great.

I bought this player as a back-up if my old and discontinued Oppo203 did die. I also have a Pioneer LX-500, discontinued too.
UB9000 - the good:
- Seems very reliable with all kind of discs, including 4K: no freezes, no skips, no image break-ups. Same as Oppo203 and more stable than LX500 which glitches with some UHD discs.
- Exceptional image quality with UHD 4K discs, marginally better than Oppo203 or LX500. (Can't say the same for DVDs or even regular blurays - see below.) I think the difference comes from the slightly increased sharpening and saturation applied by the video processor.
- If you like that and your TV can't do it, UB9000 does dynamic HDR remapping onboard. It's called "HDR optimizer" in options.
- It allows separate enable/disable control for HDR10+ and DolbyVision.
- Can do 2x (or it's 1.5x?) fast forward of video discs with sound, but not for CDs for some reason.
- Superb construction, same as LX500, even better than Oppo203.
- The remote can do TV basic control (power, volume), same as LX500 but unlike Oppo203.
The not-so-good:
- The user interface feels dated and not very clever. Annoying, large, and ugly messages overlaid on screen in a big grey text box ("now reading...", "this operation is not permitted", etc).
- It takes longer than Oppo203 to load discs.
- Very limited info on the unit display. The "dimmed" setting is almost the same as the very bright "normal".
- The tray operation (eject/close) is quite noisy for a high-end player and has a cheap feeling. Nothing too bad actually - I think I've got spoiled by LX500.
- Disc spinning is silent with CD/SACD/DVD/bluray but it can be heard with 4K discs if you are close to the unit, in a quiet room.
- The CD seek is always muted. Oppo203/LX500 play brief segments of audio while seeking (regardless of speed), making easier to figure out where you are in the track.
- It gets warm, even in stand-by with the "quick start" option activated. The user manual says that the fan may start spinning even in stand-by mode if the "quick start" is active. The 4K discs are getting rather hot after playing a full movie. Oppo203 and LX500 are always cold and don't have fans. LX500 doesn't even have venting holes.
- It's helpless with many video/audio file formats, which makes it a less than ideal network player. Not even close to Oppo203/LX500 which can play a whole mess of formats.
- Can't output video in anamorphic format (to be stretched full-screen by projectors with anamorphic lenses).
The bad:
- The upscaling and deinterlacing is not nearly as good as Oppo203 or LX500, especially with SD content (DVD). This is very easy to notice, it's not pixel peeping stuff. Upscaling from 1080 to 4K is decent but still not as good as Oppo203 (the best upscale I've ever seen - better than my high-end Sony OLED TV) or LX500 (very close to Oppo203). In fact, the SD upscaling is not much better than what you get from some other, cheaper players.
- It doesn't have a "resume" memory function. If not implemented by the disc itself (Java program), it will always play from the beginning. Both Oppo203 and LX500 can remember the last position on recently played discs, even if the disc is not implementing the "resume" feature.
- It powers down itself after 20 minutes of inactivity. You can't disable it. This is very annoying, given the lack of "resume" memory.
- No SACD and DVD-audio support, so not really an universal disc player like Oppo203/LX500.
- There is no zoom or A-B repeat function. The track/chapter replay is hidden in the options menu instead of having a dedicated key on the remote. It can't apply bookmarks. Also, it can't do slow motion with all supported file formats.
- There is no "jump" function (like Oppo203) or "short skip" (LX500) for any kind of discs or files.
- Limited control with CDs. For some reason it has only one speed for CD seek (but there are 5 for video discs) and it can't do short skips or jumps either. Same with mp3 files. (The CD control in LX500 is awful too, but for different reasons. Oppo203 is perfect with CDs.)
- Software glitches. Sometimes I get that big "now reading" message stuck on screen, even though the movie is already playing, and I need to reboot to get rid of it. Or it gets stalled during power-up with the "welcome" message on display, totally irresponsive, so I have to forcibly reboot or unplug it.
In conclusion, it's not a bad player and I'm not returning it, but Oppo203 is still my main disc spinner. At this time it's the only high-end UHD disc player still in production and probably not for too long. Another one to consider would be Tascam BD-MP4K, cheaper but not really designed for home theaters. There are also some Chinese imitations of Oppo203 but they are more expensive than UB9000 and I don't trust knockoffs.
Thank you for providing us with your detailed feedback! While the UB9000 excels in reliability, image quality, and construction, your feedback on areas for improvement such as the user interface, disc loading time, and format compatibility is duly noted. We appreciate your honesty and will consider your feedback for future product enhancements. If you have any further questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to us. -M
