It's not the stage production that I love so much, but the movie will not disappoint!

Overlooked film that was almost as good as the Broadway play. Emmy Rossum is terrific.

A Spellbinding Phantom in a Clever Opera

After having seen Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles, I was somewhat apprehensive to see it as a movie, but was greatly relieved when I learned that it is produced by Webber himself! I found the film almost as spellbinding as the stage production, and I say "almost" because there is no substitute for seeing something great like Phantom live! Gerard Butler provides great depth to the troubled Erik, a talented composer who was grotesquely disfigured since childhood. We are shocked into learning that in the 19th Century, people with conditions such as Erik's were often abused, and Erik's mind is far more damaged than his face. When faced with disappointment, he turns to murder, and these violent crimes, and not his facial deformity, cause his beloved Christine (Emmy Rossum) to turn her attention toward rich handsome Raoul (Patrick Wilson). Interestingly, the good side of Erik's face is handsome. Before he starts damaging careers and taking lives, we feel a touch of sympathy for him. This is the mark of a well-acted and well-written character! Butler, Rossum, and Wilson are a splendid trio, and their voices resonate with elegance and passion throughout the whole film. The sets and costumes are superb, and those of us who love the Victorian culture may get some ideas for our own wardrobes and home decor. The Masquerade scene is particularly delightful, resplendent with well-put-together, yet at the same time, outlandish, garb. By the time this film was first released in theatres, the songs already had become beloved classics, due to the well-deserved success of the stage production. When we see this splendid motion picture over and over again on DVD, we are, of course, treated to watching these cherished melodies, much as we would watch music videos, and the actions accompanying the songs make perfectly good sense. The Phantom of the Opera is breathtakingly magnificent and I strongly recommend it.

The best musical come to screen ever!

Emmy Rossum has a voice like an angel and portrays an innocence that makes the audience clearly understand why she is lured in by the phantom. Gerard Butler was perfectly cast for the part of the phantom. His awesome mystique and dark side, accompanied by his tremendous good looks and commanding great voice, are all that were needed to capture the audience and have them wanting more from him in addition to him getting the girl!

One of the BEST Musical and Movie Productions ever

An absolutely marvelous and intriguing movie-musical. The singing done by Emme Lou Rosson and Gerard Butler is absolutely outstanding. I didn't know that Gerard Butler could sing this well until I saw him in this movie. Its a shame that he wastes that beautiful voice of his on non-musical events. Emme Lou Rosson has a most astonishing voice. Seeing as how they had to follow the Andrew Lloyd Weber stage production of " Phantom of the Opera", and that was a most difficult thing to do, they really did a marvelous job. There a few instances that could have been better, but then what movie doesn't have this aspect. The scenery for the most part is great. They just did an all round fantastic job on this. I bought it on regular DVD and may have to go buy the Blue-Ray now. Oh well, such is progress.

This film lost a lot if anyone has seen the Broadway production I have. There is nothing to compare to hearing Weber's score live in an acoustically perfect theater. The screenplay was very good. The story was quite unique in the way it was told very entertaining. Gerard Butler stole the film. Emmy Rossum, Patrick Wilson were adequate. What can you say about Andrew Lloyd Webber. The music is just outstanding. I have seen everything Webber has done in this country and this is truly the best. Score, orchestration were superb. A MUST SEE.

I've seen this show 3 times in Las Vegas and enjoyed the stage show. That's what prompted me to purchase the DVD. Gerard Butler has wonderful stage presents, easy on the eyes and I love the voice. I was pleasantly surprise to find out Patrick Wilson from "The Gifted Man" was also in this show as is charming as Raoul. The supporting cast terrific and electrifying. This musical spectacular gave me the story line of the show which can't always be seen on the stage.

My wife and I seen this on the stage in London when we were there on our honeymoon. We really enjoyed the muisc. Back in Chicago we seen it again a year later. Now finaly they made a film version and it made it to Blu-ray. Picture and sound is awesome. The film stays pretty close to the stage version. There is a new song written and is included in the end credits. While watching the extras you can view a deleted scene with another new song sung by the Phantom but was removed from the final film. A good idea. This film is a must have if your into musicals.

This is a wonderfully elaborate and very romantic screen version of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical (itself based on Gaston Leroux's novel). The production values and music are first rate and Gerard Butler & Patrick Wilson are fine as the Phantom and Raoul, respectively. But it's the gorgeous Emmy Rossum, whose physical beauty is matched by her singing, that leaves the lasting impression here. She is perfect casting as Christine, the budding opera star whom the title character falls for.

The songs on this DVD are wonderfully contagious. I love listening to them on my IPod. The plot of the play is great, going from past to present...back and forth a few times. The DVD extras explain some of the "different" things in the movie. Great play for all ages!!!!

This adaptation of ALW's musical is great. It is one of my favorite movies. The acting and singing are both well done and on the big screen they are able to add so much more than on broadway. If you love the broadway show, you need to see this movie.

Love the movie and have the DVD version already. Bought the bluray version to see if there is a significant improvement in video and sound quality. Not a big difference in terms of video; most good DVDs with up-convert will look quite good on reasonable size HD TVs. The sound is certainly better. At $10, I think it is a good but and item for the collection. Frankly for a musical, $10 bluray is a steal.

This DVD has trailers and thats basically it for extras. The film is not as great as the play. Emmy Rossum was not the best choice for Christine and her performance was the weakest of the main cast. Even the normally talented Minnie Driver was a disapointment. Luckily Gerard Butler gave a memorable performance as the phantom. If not for his strong scene presence the movie would've been just awful.
