Better than expected close shave

This is my first electric razor so I was not exactly sure what to expect. I was not expecting a shave as close as a razor and this is true. The surprise was the shave was better than I expected it to be.
When I opened the box, the shaver was not charged. I immediately put it on the charger and it was fully charged in no time. You get the shaver, shaving head, trimmer head, shaving blade cover and charging cable (see picture). I have used the shaver for a week and the charge level has not changed so far. The replacement shaving head is SH60/72 with a MSRP of $44.99. They recommend changing the shaving head every 12 months.
The shaver has two settings that change the rotational speed. The slower one is called skin guard that is supposed to reduce skin irritation. I did not have any skin irritation on the regular speed.
The shaving head flexes in 8 directions. I found it kept the blades close to my skin. I tried a dry and wet shave. I found the dry shave was not as comfortable. The wet shave, with shaving gel, was much better. In fact, I could use this in place of my regular razor no problem. I used both a clockwise and counterclockwise movement to cut the hair as they all grow in various directions. The unit is very light. So shaving and maneuvering the shaver is very easy.
Cleaning the shaver is very easy. Just pop off the ring unit and run the shaving head under water.
Conclusion – I have used this as my daily shaver for a week and it is fine. The shave is not quite as close as a blade. But also there is no risk of nicking yourself. I think the shaver is a winner. The replacement shaving head is almost half of the price of the shaver. As I have not used an electric shaver before, I am not sure if the recommended change interval of 12 months is realistic. I have rated this shaver assuming the shaving head needs to be replaced every 12 months. My guess is the replacement interval is longer than what is recommended but it will take a year to determine if this is true.

No Surprises - Just a Good Daily Shaver

This razor works very well, but it is nearly impossible to distinguish it from the dozens of other Norelco shavers that are practically identical. I own the razor and even I can’t tell you what makes it different. Oddly, I also can’t seem to find the exact same razor anywhere else online. It seems that Norelco changes the color and a few superficial features and passes each razor off as unique.
In this case, the razor works quite well as a daily shaver. It does not appear to be intended for longer facial hair as it suggests that you pre-trim your stubble if it has been more than 3 days since you have shaved. So, if you don’t shave multiple times per week, this razor is not designed for you.
The razor is quiet, comfortable to use, and easy to grip – even when wet. The 3 heads pivot nicely and do well at adjusting to the contours of the face, chin, & neck. In my opinion, the razor works best when the face is lubricated – even splashing water on my face makes a noticeable difference at how well the razor moves and cuts.
Do be aware that it does best when cleaned often. There is no room inside for hair clippings, so you'll need to at least dump the clippings out virtually every time you use it. It needs to be cleaned so often that there's actually a reminder light that displays on the front.
The battery lasts for a couple of weeks and thankfully the buttons can be locked so that it doesn’t turn on (and drain the battery) during travel. Oddly, the razor cannot be used while it is plugged in – which is frustrating. If the battery is dead, 5 minutes of charging will give you enough power for a single shave. But, come on Norelco – just let us use the razor while it’s plugged in. The battery is not designed to be replaced – so once the battery dies, we basically have to throw the whole thing away. It could be used much longer if they just let us use the shaver while it’s plugged in.
The only feature that is an absolute disappointment is the Click-On Precision Trimmer. It is easy to attach, but it hardly works at all. The attachment doesn’t even do a good job at trimming sideburns. It is so bad that you’ll probably need to throw it away and purchase a beard trimmer (or more full sized clippers) to get the job done.
I do believe this triple-head shaver is worth purchasing as a basic every day razor. It provides a simple and even shave and is exactly what people have come to expect from Norelco. Ya really can’t go wrong seeing that Norelco will actually give you a refund within 45 days if you don’t like it. I put it to the test and found that I had far fewer nicks and scrapes than my previous triple-head Remington razor. I have no doubt that I’ll be using this Norelco for the next few years.

A Smooth Shave, that's Fun to Use - Anywhere!

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
This is the third electric shaver I’ve owned, and I’ve got to say this is the best so far! The first shaver I bought was many years ago, it was a different brand that used a foil over cutter system. That was long enough ago that it only worked when it was plugged into an AC outlet. I seriously disliked that thing, it buzzed like crazy, it got very warm to hold, often tugged and pulled on my beard, was messy to clean and didn’t do a very good job at all. That bad experience caused me to ignore electric shavers for over twenty years.
Fast forward to current day, and things have changed substantially! I dipped my toes back into the electric shaver market by purchasing a no-name brand that used a rotary blade system. It also had a built-in rechargeable battery. I bought that unit specifically because I have a long commute, an hour each way. I decided that I could become more efficient if I shaved in my car on the way to work. And frankly I hate having to shave with a razor. It’s just a long process that I don’t enjoy, particularly on mornings that I’m late for the office. The cheap rotary razor was to be a proof of concept for me to try out. I wanted to see if it would be feasible to shave while driving to work, and whether the results would be any good.
I was very happy with the results of my tests! I found it was super easy to gently and easily shave my face while commuting. Now I know there will be people that find this practice gross, or not safe. But I disagree. Using an electric shaver while driving isn’t distracting in the least for me. It’s like massaging your face, but you are actually shaving. Sometimes people will look at you and laugh, some will look and scowl, but most don’t bother to look at all.
Given the great success of the no-name rotary shaver, I decided to take a leap and upgrade to a name brand rotary shaver. Electric shavers come in a dizzying array of models, and honestly I don’t understand why they have to create so many slightly different models with price ranges varying by up to several hundred dollars. The Philips Norelco S6880/81 is in the middle of the road feature-wise and price-wise. Coming in at just under a hundred dollars it is competitively priced, offering basic features from a quality name brand.
The 6880/S81 doesn’t come with many bells and whistles, but that doesn’t mean it’s void of everything useful. Indeed for me this model does just about everything I’d want an electric shaver, save for one particular missing feature that I have learned to live with. Switching back to the no-name brand rotary shaver it did a decent job at shaving. What it did exceptionally well was the battery life was phenomenal, and best of all it could be charged with a regular USB cable plugged into any regular charger. This was sadly missing on the Norelco.
What I found out in general about electric shavers is that they are best used to maintain a smooth face, not to continually shave a rough beard. I found the very best results came when I first shaved with a regular razor, then to consistently use electric shaver every day, whether you think you need it or not. I consider this maintenance mode, it allows me to greatly extend the between times I need to shave with a razor. So now I am in the habit of shaving with a razor on Monday, then subsequent days I use the electric razor while on my long driven in to work. This keeps everything nice and neat and trimmed.
The Good
Philips builds a solid product, it’s well engineered and put together. They have used quality materials to build this shaver. The handle is covered with a soft-touch rubber, that makes it comfortable to hold and easier to grip and hang onto. This is particularly important since this shaver can be used dry or wet, even while in the shower. That’s right, you can use this particular model while taking a shower. I’ve only done this once, and I did find it resulted in a slightly smoother shave. But shaving in the shower isn’t my thing. You can also use this shaver with shaving cream, which does work and does result in a smoother shave. But in my experience it’s messy and sloppy and doesn’t make sense for me. But to each his own! I didn’t buy the Norelco shaver to shave in the shower or even at home for that matter! I wanted it to make better use of the time on my long commute to work. And it does that supremely well! I actually enjoy using the shaver during my commute. It gives me something to do while sitting for an hour. On cold winter mornings the gentle rotating razors feel nice, and they get warmer the longer the unit is used. I have been very impressed with the smooth shave that I am given by this device. It leaves my skin feeling soft with very little stubble at all. It provides a noticeably better result than did the no-name brand I had used previously. While shaving the unit glides over my face easily, it doesn’t get hung up at all, the motors are strong and never bog down, yet the whole unit while running doesn’t make much noise at all. It’s very well engineered using quality parts.
The Bad
There isn’t much I can say bad about this shaver, it does what it’s meant to do very well. But I can nitpick a little… First the shaver can only be recharged off an AC outlet. The cable plugs into the bottom of the handle, which is a bit annoying in itself. You are left to lay the shaver down on its side while charging, rather than standing upright. A minor gripe, but there you go… The no-name branded shaver I’d used previously was charged using a standard USB cable that I kept plugged into the cigarette lighter outlet in my car. This was super convenient since it was always topped off with a full charge each morning when I went to use it. With the Norelco I have to bring it back inside the house and plug it into AC. This is a pain, and would be so much better if it could be charged via USB. But my usage is probably not the norm and not many other people will find this a negative. On the positive side the battery life is quite impressive, and I’ve found that I can run off one full charge Monday through Friday, then bring it inside over the weekend (to be cleaned and charged). I really cannot find any other faults with this unit though.
In summary the Norelco model S6880/81 wet/dry electric shaver is a product that is easy for me to recommend. It makes my life easier and improves the quality of my day. It’s not terribly expensive, and so long as you take care of it - it will provides years of service. It’s size and performance make it super convenient, and you’ll soon find that you don’t want to use a regular razor anymore. There are more expensive models in the lineup, which adds different other features to shaver. But this does everything I need. The floating head design, the ease of cleaning it, the ability to use it wet or dry, and of course the excellent resulting shave - all add up to a winning combination. I had a couple of minor complaints, but nothing that gets me frustrated - just some things that could make a good product a great one!. For the price point, I think this is the best electric shaver you will find. I definitely recommend this product, and give it two "smooth and stubble-free" thumbs-up!

Most Face-Friendly Shaver I Have Ever Used
|

For the past three weeks I have used this Philips-Norelco 6800 SmartClick Wet/Dry Cordless Electric Shaver every day in both dry and wet conditions. I received this complimentary shaver in exchange for an honest and comprehensive review. While washing the unit and charging it up I immediately noticed how light it was and easy to hold in my hands. This is a very important feature to me since I have arthritis.
So, what did I discover about using this shaver and why do I think it is the most face-friendly shaver I have ever used:
** Close Shave – It's the most important feature of any electric shaver. This little baby fooled me at first. It glided over my entire face so effortlessly, I barely noticed how close it was shaving my stubbly 'shadow'. I had to run my fingers over my face several times to actually believe it was that good. WooHoo!
** Ergonomic Design – This shaver is super comfortable to hold in either hand while shaving in the shower or at my bathroom sink. The shape allows me to grip it firmly and rotate my hands to shave in clockwise or counterclockwise direction, which gives me a more precise shave.
** Flexible Shaving Heads – The circular shaving heads float comfortably over every nook and cranny of my face, chin, and neck. They are specially coated to insure they glide over my face easily. I love the multi flex heads which conform to various surfaces of my face and neck. They shave every hair and stubble without pulling or scrapes. No irritation. Love It!
** Dry Shave – I think I get a neater-looking, closer shave when my face is dry. I like to wash my face first in warm soapy water to get rid of facial oils, then dry. To give my face time to dry thoroughly I proceed to brush my teeth and comb my hair. My facial whiskers stand out more when they are dry as opposed to wet, and this Norelco shaver glides over all my facial contours and neck with ease. So, I get the closest shave from any electric shaver I have ever used. YooHoo!
** Wet Shave - It is very convenient to have this feature especially when I am in a hurry. If my facial whiskers are not heavy, I wet shave in the shower using gel foam. It is quick and comfortable. I get a nice clean shave without hardly noticing that the shaver is even ON. It is fast and soothing. But without a mirror it doesn't allow me to really inspect the areas where my facial hair is heavier. Additionally, the gel and shower running water doesn't allow my whiskers to stand up and be more noticeable for shaving. At my bathroom sink wet shaving is not my preference because I think I get a closer shave when my face is dry. Additionally, I have to rinse the shaver often, slowing me down. But, at the end of the day wet shaving is comfy.
** Transition Time – Going from one electric shaver to another is not a traumatic transition. However, each shaver has its own unique features and attributes. My previous shaver was a flat and straight-edged unit. It did a decent job on my cheeks and neck, but sorely lacked on the contours of my face. This is where the Philips Norelco 6800 excels. It glides effortlessly in circular patterns with flexible, circular shaving heads that conform to every contour of the surfaces of my face, neck, and chin. At first I used the slower rotational shaving speed (SkinGuard mode) to allow my face get used to the circular shaving heads. But, after two days I was ready for the normal shaving speed. It took my face approximately two weeks to get used to this Philips-Norelco. Each shave got better and better as I learned how to efficiently use this baby over my problem and sensitive areas. I discovered that counter clock-wise circular motions followed by clock-wise circular shaving motions gave me the closest and quickest shave (see pic). If you are transitioning from a safety, bladed razor be aware that your face requires adequate time to get used to electric shaving. Do not get discouraged because the transition will not happen overnight. I returned my first electric shaver after the first week because I was too impatient. Several years later my dermatologist suggested I use an electric razor instead of a blade-type. That is when I stuck it out, and, allowed the skin on my face to adjust to electric shaving. After a month all was fine. This Philips-Norelco is my sixth electric shaver, and, undoubtedly the best I have ever used. It is definitely face-friendly.
** Charging - A charging power cord is furnished, which plugs into any standard 120V outlet. The other end, of course, plugs into the bottom of the shaver. The shaver comes with a plastic protective cover for the three circular shaving heads. When not in use, I keep this cover on for protection and especially when I am charging my shaver on the bathroom counter top. When the shaver is fully charged three LED charging light indicators will be fully lit up. As the charge depletes the number of LED charging indicators respond accordingly. I can always check my charging status by depressing the ON button. A nice feature is that if I let the charge completely run out – it will quickly recharge in five minutes. Enough time for one more shave.
** Easy Cleaning – After each and every shave I pull the entire shaving head unit from the shaver body. It easily separates with a firm pulling motion. I then separate the shaving heads from the holder by depressing two of the three tabs on the side of the holder. I use a squirt of regular anti-bacterial hand-wash soap to apply over the bottom of the shaving heads and bottom of the shaving holder. I rinse with warm water and leave out to air-dry (see pic). Then I simply snap the shaving heads back into the holder and snap the holder back into the shaver body and am ready for another great shave. Easy! For more thorough cleaning consult the User Instructions to take apart the circular cutting blades from the shaving head.
** Shaving Tips - Whether you shave wet or dry I found that slightly stretching my skin helped my shaver to get a nice, closer shave, especially in problem areas of thicker facial whiskers. I found that shaving one side of my face completely instead of wandering back in forth used less time and gave me a cleaner shave. I also found that using the included trimmer is better with a comb for trimming my sideburns and the hair over the top of my ears. It makes me look groomed and evenly cut instead of 'steps'.
** Additional Features – I can lock the shaver for travel when placing in a kit or suitcase so it won't accidentally turn ON. There is also a re-settable shaving head replacement reminder. The symbol illuminates when the shaving heads need to be replaced.
Wish it had:
It would have been nicer to have a hard shell case or cloth storage pouch to facilitate both the shaver and trimmer. I would have also preferred a charging stand in place of just the charging cord. But, because this shaver does such a great job of close-shaving neither of those items is a deal breaker for me.
I highly recommend this Philips - Norelco Series 6000 SmartClick Wet/Dry Electric Shaver for your own personal use, or, as a gift to a family member or friend. Buy It, Try It, You Won't Regret It.

This shaver is replacing my 6 year old pink shaver, specifically for women. I must say this one is much nicer, even than when my pink one was brand new. This one glides so smoothly over skin, I don't have a problem around the curves of my legs. My last shaver, although designed for women, would nick me here and there, not this one. I even tried it on my daughter's legs, she's half Italian and very hairy for a girl, and her age. Her hair was quite long and this shaver worked like a charm. I had to empty it after one leg, and go over everything several times, but that's to be expected with the amount of hair we were working with lol! She said it felt nice and smooth, no nicks or skin irritation at all. It also charges super fast, which is awesome in pinch! It has a symbol that lights up when you're done shaving to remind you to clean/empty it. It will also tell you when it is time to replace the blades. I know this shaver is designed for men, but if you're a woman give it a try. Or guys, don't be surprised if your GF/wife steals this thing if they ever get a chance to use it!

I have come to the opinion that to get a decent shaver, you need to get something that is around $80-$90. I tried a couple of cheaper shavers before this and was disappointed.
This shaver has a battery that lasts for days, quick charging and a decent shave. I can get pretty smooth shave quickly and easily. However it is not so close as to not need a touch up by the end of the day or next morning. I can use a razor to get a much closer and longer lasting shave, but prefer the electric so I don't have to worry about nicks and cuts - as well as the prep to shave and after-shave care.
I would recommend this to you if you are looking for a good daily shave.

Great all around shaver! Easy to handle and keep clean. I like using shaving cream and water because I have real sensitive skin and prone to razor burn. If you follow directions on how to shave with, you will get a nice shave. I usually have to re-shave 3 days later. Does get real hot on continuous slow speed and have to switch over to faster speed. Charges fairly quickly and charge lasted me about 6 shaves of 15 minutes each. Only improvement.. include carrying case.

I upgraded / replaced an old Norelco 7310XL. This razor does cost more. Before this razor, I've never owned an $100 razor. I like the feel of the newer model. Its lighter and my large hand grips it better. I also like the flexible three heads. I'm please with the actual shave it produces. Cant comment on durability as of yet. I've always been pleased with older Norelco razors and presume this one will last a long time as well.

I purchased this shaver to replace the 5100 I had. It is quieter and gives me s closer shave. I like where I can grip this better while shaving. What I don't care for is how to empty my shavings. Difficult removing the head completely to empty , sometimes having to put the blades back in. Otherwise a good shaver.
