When I first heard of the films existence, I was entirely skeptical, especially since the director of Gulliver's Travels (2010) was at the helm. Sure, I love Pokemon, but I wasn't sure that the film was gonna be any good. I mean, the director started out in animated films and handling a good CGI animated film (Monsters vs. Aliens) and then made a good movie in the form of Goosebumps, but combining the distaste of Gulliver and the usual disdain of video game films on general, just soured me. Luckily, they hit a nerve when they cast Ryan Reynolds as DP and that awesome trailer just sold it for me. I loved the film when I saw it early May 2019, sitting back and watching a humorous film with great CG and 3D, enjoying the heck out if it. Sure, the plot is standard detective fluff, which makes for fine Juniors First Film Noir, but predictable for the rest of the audience. The acting was fine, the camerawork (shot on film to enhance the noir-ish feel) was very nice and the sets and the CGI Pokemon look so cute and real. It's a fun film, but better in 3D if you can view it on the format. Moving on to the PQ and AQ, the film looks gorgeous on the big screen, so it makes sense that it follows the same path on the small screen and you'd be correct. Even though I haven't a 4k BluRay player, the standard BluRays look incredible and sharp, despite a lack of increased resolution (it is a 2k DI, so it's an upscale anyhow) and HDR (which should make it look amazing in 4k), and is demo-worthy for the standard BluRay. The 3D though... Well it's top-notch! Several pop-outs, amazing depth of the image that feels organic to the point of it looking like a 3D native image, and a surprise lack of color loss. Truly, a spectacular 3D conversion and disc. The included DVD looks fine, but that's mainly my lending disc, so moving onto the audio. Yet again, the Dolby Atmos is spectacular, but sadly WB had yet again neglected to offer the Atmos on the 3D version, just offering a 5.1 DTS-HD, which also is amazing, but it lacks the 3D feel of the 11.1 option. Extras are surprisingly kinda shallow, but it does offer some fun. Some nice featurettes on the designs of the Pokemon, some interviews with the cast and crew, a 3 minute commentary from Mr. Mine, and the best extra being Detective Mode. It is a p-in-p mode with several behind the scenes extras showing up throughout the film, offering some good stuff about making the film. Overall, this is an awesome disc, begged to be seen in 3D, and some decent extras and a Detective Pikachu Pokemon card included inside, makes for a total must own!

Very fun and enjoyable movie! I have been a Pokémon fan since red and blue was released on the gameboy. I grew up with Pokémon and this was a very well made live action example of what a Pokémon movie should be. I hope this opens up other live action movies of the franchise. Another reason I purchased this edition is I collect steel books for movies I really like. Although this movies ending was sort of predictable it was still entertaining to watch. I have also collected and played the trading card game and it was a nice added bonus that it came with a Pikachu promo card!

Loosely based on the video game of the same name, this is a very enjoyable watch that's sure to delight viewers whether they're familiar with the world of Pokemon or not.

My kids have been Pokemon fans forever. Watched the movie in theaters, loved it so much! Steelbook art is gorgeous, it even has a bonus Pikachu card inside

It's Ryan Reynolds doing his thing!!! It's the PG Pikachu version of the wisecracking Deadpool. Fun, with heart, visually stunning, amazing 3D. Fun for the whole Family!!! ~Nickachuuuuu

Ryan Reynolds brings the awesome Pikachu to life in this movie.

A really good movie and I like the inclusion of a exclusive promo card, but upon further inspection the corner of the steelbook is dented inwards. When I noticed it first before I got home, I thought it was just intentional for the corner to be flat but instead it's supposed to be rounded. Kind of disappointed due to paying for a more expensive steelbook, but would've be better if the people in charge of moving products wouldn't drop items that people paid for.

Great movie came with a code to watch on phone, or tablet and for the car ! Came with a Pokémon card as well! Came with a regular disk and a blue ray one! Also, awesome movie for any Pokémon lover out there, makes the perfect gift at a reasonable and affordable gift !!!!

Bad advertising, it says that comes with a collectable card and it didn't, I could give you 5 stars cuz the movie is great but is Best Buy fault for the low review, just look at the cover and has a sticker of the mentioned trading card

My 6yr old had just started getting into Pokemon when Detective Pikachu hit theaters, and we just never had time to get to see it before it left. Now, Pokemon is a phenomenon that began as I was leaving my years of pop culture, so my knowledge boiled down to it was a cartoon based on a card game, and one was named Pikachu. That was it So, as we prepared for a 3 week trip to Europe, we pre-ordered this for him to have once we returned. After a disasterous return trip home, we took a nap, got up, pulled out the futon, ordered in some pizza, and popped in the long-awaited Detective Pikachu (prior to Avengers: Endgame,) and cozied up for a movie night. And Pikachu delivered faster than our pizza. Neither my wife or I could tell you much more about Pokemon than I mentioned earlier, but both of us enjoyed it as much as he did. It has moments of "the feels," some great action, and equally great comedy. And the ending? One of the more satisfying endings to a film in recent memory... and that includes Endgame. Now, to those die-hard Poke-fans, there may be a little, a lot, all, or nothing in this film that goes "right," based on their decades of fandom. But, as a fun family film that hits all the notes in striking a balance that a whole family or larger audience can enjoy, Detective Pikachu hit the mark!

It's a fresh take on Pokémon movies in a film noir style, but is probably not appropriate for the really young or sensitive kiddos. Thematically, it's much more complex than most Pokémon movies, dealing with issues of intra-familial connections and personal growth. Also, tone of the movie is darker than most Pokémon media, and the ending doesn't wrap itself with a bow and easily determinable moral. The visuals are gorgeous, though. If you've ever wondered what a Blade Runner would look like in a Pokémon world, here you go. Whether at home, out and about in the city, or in nature, the Pokémon fit in nicely to create a believable AU. My biggest quibble is with Ryan Reynolds as Pikachu. It's not his voice acting per se, but some of the humor was more mature in tone and I kept waiting for him to bring it into the Deadpool zone. Obviously this doesn't happen, but if you plan a Deadpool/Detective Pikachu double feature, you might have the same issue. All in all, it's enjoyable but the themes and tone are best for a slightly older audience; One which still enjoys Pokémon.

The Movie: Detective Pikachu is a lot of fun. Combining the nerdy lore of Pokemon with classic film noir creates this experience that can only result in awe. Funny, predictable, and a whole lot of fun. Can't believe they pulled it off for generations to gush over. The 3D: Honestly a little disappointed. Because this was shot on actual film I thought the 3D transfer would have been easier and more noticeable, but apparently not. It looks good and is on par with most of WBs blockbuster 3D, but because there's so much to look at in every frame of the movie I think it works better as a 2D feature. The Special Features: - Detective Mode - instead of a commentary track there's this. The director will pop up on screen to tell you about easter eggs and certain details of the production while the movie plays. - Alternate Opening - interesting, but glad they cut it from the final product. - My Pokemon Adventure - a lot of fun and look at behind the scenes of filming the movie. - Creating the World of Detective Pikachu - talks about the pokemon and acting against nothing. - Mr. Mime's Audio Commentary - a 3 min cute scene of Mr Mime realizing he can't do audio commentaries. - Ryan Reynolds Outside the Actor's Studio - one of the promos for the film where Ryan abandons his family to go full method acting on Detective Pikachu - Music Video

If you're here, you've seen the movie and have your opinions on the subject, so rather than delve into that, I'll highlight some of the details that aren't listed regarding the steel itself. This is a lovely, glossed piece with metallic highlighting throughout. While the overall presentation is dark, the vibrancy of the highlights and metals really makes it a visual treat. This looks great alongside steels like the Mondo Blade Runner 2049 and Best Buy Ghost in the Shell. IF you like the film, get the steel, it's a worthy piece to any collection.

I watched Pokémon Detective Pikachu at AMC Theatres Orange Park when it was still in theaters showing and I loved it. Now that it is out on Blu-ray and DVD, my family got to enjoy it at home. I admit that I was skeptical about Ryan Reynolds as Pikachu, but all my doubts were put to rest when I saw his performance alongside Justice Smith. The appearance of some of the classic Pokémon front the games and anime made me smile, and some of the Pokémon I saw as normal were portrayed adorably, like they were real-life animals. For any fan of video games, anime, family movies, and Pokémon in general, this is a must-buy and the special features immerses the viewers to the magic of Pokémon. If you want a movie for the entire family to enjoy, this is the one to get.
